Xbox One getting free games in Game with Gold program

More details coming next year.

Microsoft confirmed today via Twitter that their Game with Gold program will eventually extend to Xbox One owners. Game with Gold provides two free games each month to current Xbox Live Gold subscribers on Xbox 360.

No specific titles have yet been announced for the service on Xbox One, though it is unlikely to be available for the console's launch. The tweet states that: "Details coming later in 2014."

Current Gold subscribers on 360 can download A World of Keflings until November 15, after which Iron Brigade will become available. Microsoft has not announced an end date for the service on Xbox 360.

The Xbox One launches worldwide on November 22.

Sorry MS but I would rather still not pay the rippoff Gold subscription. Steam and Origin have no paywall and they are better for it.

I can get all the characters in Microsoft/double helix free if I go gold.

I think they trying to keep up with sony.

So that Fable Anniversary could come to X1 then?? eventually. Would like to see them give like the first Mass Effect away. Or updated HD versions of the trilogy on X1(obviously not free though)

hmm I wonder when this will start and what games will be free. So far GFG on the 360 hasn't been all that great (except for Rainbow 6 and Halo3 imho)

Paying for gold is a rip off. Why pay? every other system offers it for free. Oh.... I know!!! Because the easy access in your friends list? hmmm no that can't be it.. is it the latency? hmm know that also cannot be it. Is it brain washing us to believing it is that much more superior than other consoles for us to pay? maybe that can be it. Tell you the truth I own both systems, I leave my box downstairs and ps3 upstairs. I play both systems online, up until my gold subscription ended. I was to busy to renew it and instead started playing ps3 online more and man there really is no difference, at least to justify 60 bucks a years.

I´m a X1 user, and I don't sympathize with the Sony brand... but c´mon people... don´t compare the games "offered" by MS to the games "rented" by Sony. There are some good games on both sides, but Sony side has a much higher profile. And it´s normal to be like that, Sony is the one who needs to gain some internet service market.

Dannystaples14

Yeah these will be indie titles for a long time I'm thinking. Unless they change their policy to the renting version Sony are using.

There is no way they will give away full Xbox One titles that are even a year old.

I mean imagine buying an Xbox One and in the slow year that is inevitably about the happen before next Christmas they then suddenly start giving away Dead Rising 3, Forza 5 and Ryse to Gold players? Not going to happen.

A lot of people won't even be getting a new console till next Christmas, I'd also think twice about buying one in the next year if I knew they were just going to give me most of the launch titles for free.

since microsoft is giving out old games on 360 I'm guessing they are gonna do free indie on xbox one since games going to be released on it still haven't pass maturity date requirements for the program . Still , free games are good

how many of you on here are getting rid of your xbox 360's when you get an xbox one. im keeping mine just so i can go back and play the mass effect games and battlefield bad company 2.

It's hilarious.. reading comparisons about PS+ offerings and Games with Gold offerings, and somehow the xbox fans bring up Knack and Killzone scores into their arguments. It looks awful, you only show yourself up as a major fanboy when you bring up unrelated stuff and can't even stick to a discussion point. smh just stop..

I think the 2 free games a month is really for new comers to the xbox and the younger gamers. Which i do think is good for them but not so great for us pro games as we have been there and done these games and are unlikely to play them again. I download these for my son each month on his console but i do not as there is better things to play.

It's not exactly "free"

So we got Uncharted 4, Infamous: Second Son, Destiny Beta first, and The Last of Us DLC in spring... what haz Microsoft got?

@B-boy Glorified rental service compared to keeping the downloaded games after you un sub from gold. I say MS wins this one.

monson21502

@nintendians  they are so far ahead of sony its not even funny. they put money into their online.  i ran my 360 without it being wired and i still had better online then the ps3 that had the eithernet cable plugged straight into it.

@phbz You bought into the hype?  I apologize on behalf of Microsoft for your future system death(cause you know they won't) :P

@Dannystaples14 I see your points and it could very well go that way, but I can see MS giving away games for marketing purposes. I don't necessarily agree with you point that "most people are waiting until next Christmas to get next gen" since historically hardware sales rise month over month (http://images.wikia.com/vgsales/images/4/42/Npd_total_hardware_sales.png). Yes, sales lift due to seasonal demand every November, but notice that sales figures don't decline in January (not a spike, but a lift). Being able to anticipate those periods actually really would help with what games they should give away/

For example lets say Titanfall 2 was coming out in March 2016, they may give Titanfall away to gold subscribers in Nov/Dec 2015 to entice people to purchase the sequel. Given that people pay for gold it is not really "giving away" a game, its generating demand as there will be potentially more people buying Titanfall 2.  Also it could be a viable tactic to give away an older Triple A game, around holiday time to increase hardware sales as well as add to Microsoft live gold subscriptions base.

I see a lot of marketing potential, remember just because a company is "giving away" something does mean they are not getting a return somewhere else.  I am not saying they will give away headline games at all, but at the end of the day neither of us have the data to make accurate assumptions in what Microsoft should/would do. But it is fun to speculate!

@iceman200004 @PayneKiller Payne's got it. I don't plan to get either console until march or so, but no way am I trading in my 360 for either one. I don't think MS or Sony have even announced a date for when they will stop supporting the 360 or PS3 for new games. So why bother trading it in till at LEAST then?

PayneKiller
PayneKiller

@iceman200004 with the absence of backwards compatibility in both consoles, It wouldn't make sense to get rid of either PS3 or Xbox 360 any time soon, especially if you've built up a decent library of games you can replay.

If you don't want to keep it anymore, I'd say try to keep it in the family. You probably have some little cousin or nephew that would happily adopt your games. More true with a digital collection, you can't resell those, so give the console with the account to someone you know.

@PayneKiller PS4's IGC isn't going to be as good as it's on PS3.

@sammoth I'd much rather rent a good game than own a terrible one. With the exception of Halo 3 and AC2, the games with gold promo has offered nothing but piss-poor quality games that weren't selling in the first place. I didn't bother wasting my hard drive space on World of Keflings this month and won't be downloading Iron Brigade either

nintendians
nintendians

@monson21502 @nintendians I heard Microsoft online server is more or the same to sony from different people, but I was talking about free games, xbox 360 didn't have that unless I wasn't aware of for gold members.

@mickyfinn84 @Cozm1kaos Only the multiplayer part isn't free, but everything else is.  There is no paywall for Netflix, Hulu Plus, etc

xOmniCloudx

@mickyfinn84 @Cozm1kaos PSN is free, online multiplayer is not. XBL is not free in any form on XB1. You need it even to use stuff like netflix. Lame.

Garm31

@mickyfinn84 @Cozm1kaos Another paywall. Your games are totally useless without it.

phbz

@Yoeriman1 @phbz I said "rent" because I had the idea you stopped having access to them once you stopped using PS+. If that´s not the case, then my wrong. Anyway, even if "rented" I think it´s a better deal considering the quality of the games, since once I finish a game I rarely go back to it.

@GuillermoX @phbz This is the exact amount of fucks I give = 0

@sadface1234 That slow year I mentioned was more in line of there will be a smattering of titles come out in the coming months but not all that many really and then there will be like a dead summer as always and my guess is there will be some belters coming in the Christmas period of 2014.

People will continue buying the console for that entire time sure but the games are always slow out of the gate. I remember with my Xbox 360, was wondering if I'd made a big mistake at first, then some decent games hit and I wondered how I ever doubted.

Then some solder melted and I had to get it replaced. Ahhh the memories.

PayneKiller
PayneKiller

@LeoKRock I don't know. I don't think you do either. We'll both just have to see. I wouldn't expect any great things to be in the IGC for the PS4 now, considering the library is just being created and there won't be much backlog to add from, but they did say Drive Club would have been offered at launch, albeit a PS+ version.

@BrutalPandaX2 @Shantmaster_K @B-boy  least with the free games on xboxlive you get to keep them. psn+ games are only rentals. when u cancel + u cant play em.. friend got halo 3 for free and his gold ran out and his son and him could still play it...

@2leetchisgod2 @xOmniCloudx @mickyfinn84 @Cozm1kaos Not everyone will get PS+ for PS4.  Not everyone is interested in multiplayer games.  They can watch Netflix, Hulus Plus, etc without a subscription.

2leetchisgod2
2leetchisgod2

@xOmniCloudx @mickyfinn84 @Cozm1kaos Are you actually telling me someone will buy a PS4 and not have the PSN plus membership to play online. Cmon. Everyone will have either a gold membership or PSN plus.. and $50 or $60 is the same price.. unless you are 8 years old.

LeoKRock
LeoKRock

I don't know, but I fell that the PS plus games gonna be a little better than gold's, but gold's games are yours to keep.

The reason why I think the free games offer on PS4 will be weaker is because you'll be paying for playing online.
