Xbox One external storage support teased in new image

Strongest indication yet that external hard drives will be supported on Xbox One in the next system update.

Microsoft has often teased the possibility of external hard drive support coming to the Xbox One in a future system update, but this new picture posted to Reddit is the strongest indication yet that the feature will be arriving soon.

Reddit user XboxOneDev, a confirmed Xbox One developer, posted the image of an Xbox One UI with external hard drive support along with the message "adding more hype on the list of things to come".

Microsoft has not formally announced when the functionality will be included, but has previously said it's working on incorporating it in a future update. The Xbox One has seen regular system updates over the past few months, and there is no indication from Microsoft that it'll be slowing down anytime soon.

i have a question, adding storage to 360 didnt allow you to download and install games on it, is this the same thing around?

I buy Xboxes and not Playstations.

You're just gonna have to accept that and move on with your life.

Well, it's literally the least they could do after locking you in to that 500GB HDD...

USB Storage is a welcomed addition.

However, NAS storage would be greatly appreciated as I don't necessarily want a USB drive permanently connected to my console, plus my Raid'd 8TB NAS is a damn site more reliable than a USB or internal drive.

Sweet dont need it yet or wont for a while as I beat games and delete them when im done then get new games except for my digital titles but when the time comes I can plug it into the back behind the console.

That still doesn't excuse the pitiful 500 GB internal HDD. Should have been 1TB at the very least.

Still scrambling to make a fully functional console, eh?

Just feels like they released the thing incomplete.

Thank god - I'm at 60% full and the console's only been out for 6 months!

The benefits of waiting on a next-gen purchase keep getting bigger and bigger. It's easy to see why. All the big consoles were RUSHED out the door before easy and helpful utilities could be installed at factory. Pretty much as soon as they got the hardware to work, they said "F*** it." and threw it out the door.

I don't do Early-Access, I don't purchase "Betas" (I will play free ones though), and I refuse to make a big purchase on machines that don't have the games or software updates to make them most of what they can be. I buy fully operational products. Maybe I wait a little longer, but not having to deal with a ton of bugs and crashes while getting the most content with the most optimal experience is pretty worth.

Though I am very grateful to all Early Adopters who took the bullet and the machines when they first launched so the numbers would keep investors and financial backers around to further the product's potential. I'll wait till all the good IPs stop coming to last gen machines before taking the plunge and probably getting an X1 in around a year (maybe half) or so.

I hope the XB1 won't format the drive and not allow you to save other stuff on it. Because I have a 2TB Lacie Rugged External drive that has both USB 3 and Thunderbolt. I Use the Thunderbolt with my Asus laptop and was planning to use the USB 3 for the XB1.

Lol, I thought GameSpot didn't write article on rumors?? Hey MSspot, everyone knows you won't write about leaked early development screens of PS4 exclusive Souls game Project Beast because you take your marching orders from your Microsoft masters.

@PlatinumPaladin  Yes playing catchup to PS cause u can already use external hdd on PS...smfh. ATLEAST MICROSOFT IS ROLLING OUT AND INFORMING PEOPLE OF THE STUFF THEYRE DOING. SONY ISNT DOING HARDLY ANYTHING! Except adding party chat, which In case you didnt know....Xbox has had for years ;)

@dogwitch1  Yeah, right. So I have to go out and spend $100 on a good HD to go in my ps4.  At least with my xbox one I can take one of externals I already have and use it.  Switching out the internal HD is MORE of a pain in the ass that plugging in an external..

@dogwitch1 Most stupid comment! You could replace the HDD on the X360 from begin with.Tr0ll next time better.

And are you gonna replace the PS4 HDD AGAIN when its full?

I am 99.999999999999999% sure that the drive will have to be formatted specifically for XB1.

No probably not because they didn't design a user accessible bay. Even though Sony always has they've managed to keep it standard, unlike the two different proprietary housings the x360 had.

@repetitious @sladakrobot  you know you can make a backup using an external HDD (before replacing the internal HDD) on both PS3 and PS4 right?

Sevenizz

MS will most likely market their own device which will work out of the box.

yavix
yavix

@Sevenizz Because the Xbox One isn't a PC, even if it's working on a stripped down version of Windows 8. More than likely it handles data a little differently and will save in a format readable only Xbox, which probably will format the drive to it's personal format.
