Xbox One DVR feature only available for Xbox Live Gold subscribers

Recording technology for next-generation console to be restricted to paying members.

by

The Xbox One's Game DVR feature, which allows players to record game footage and share it with friends, will only be available to those with an Xbox Live Gold subscription.

As spotted by One Hit Pixel, the Xbox Live features page shows that users will need to have a Gold subscription to use Game DVR, as well as Skype, SmartMatch, and OneGuide, among other features.

An Xbox Live Gold subscription is available for $60 per year. A Microsoft representative told GameSpot, "Yes, Game DVR is a feature of Xbox Live Gold."

Microsoft recently confirmed that the Xbox One's Game DVR will record footage in 720p at 30 fps, below the 1080p 60fps that many titles will output at.

It is not clear if competitor Sony will require users hold a PlayStation Plus subscription to take advantage of the PlayStation 4's similar "Share" functionality.

The Xbox One and PS4 launch later this year.

How many of you actually care for this feature? I don't think I would ever use it.

MS: you get what you pay for[™].

Microsoft doesn't owe you a damn thing. It seems that most people want something for nothing these days. Get a better job if you can't afford it. Most things that are good are worth paying for. Simple.

Microsoft is seriously not getting how all works, are they? After their previous fallout you'd think they'd be a little more conscientious of their audience. Having to pay a sub to use the system you already bought is silly, and don't bother with the cell phone analogies. Cell phones are a reoccurring service that must be maintained; this is far more like having to pay a sub fee to record anything with the camera you bought. That's why it's silly. And then to further the stupid, they're gating things behind a sub that you ALREADY HAVE A SUB TO, like Netflix?

Well, whatever. I already planned to go for a PS4 a while ago. Still not done being entertained my Microsoft's failures, though.

I love all the people complaining about this; Its hilarious.  You can't play online games without subscribing(PS4 is the same) and other then that, you want to DVR yourself doing something epic on a single player game...

On top of that Gold costs $60 a year essentially....pretty damn cheap for anyone who has a job

we don't call it paywall, we call it "pay to enjoy what others give you for free".

I'm cool with that.

Ive never seen the need to watch things at 1080p 60fps. Gaming at 60fps is another matter... but watching videos at 30fps is acceptable.

Glad I will also have my PS4 even though I already have Xbox Live Gold and I doubt I'll ever use this feature anyways!

If it's a feature that's on the console and you pay for the console, you should be able to use it without additional fees. Pretty simple stuff.

All I see among the people who are actually trying to be adults about their whining is that people want to live in a utopian society with no free market competition, where all services come in one package for one fee.

For shame, all of you. For shame.

"I have to pay a fee to my ISP. Then I have to pay a fee to Microsoft for XBLG. Then I have to pay a fee to Netflix. Waah. or Then I have to pay a fee to Amazon/Hulu/BangBros/whatever.

Get over it. You live in a "capitalist" economy where there are "choices". You can choose not to pay for things.

Like someone who "can't afford" xbox live gold will use this feature. If you can buy the console, you can pay the online subscription. I bet Sony makes an announcement in a few days that they don't need PS Plus to the DVR feature, and everyone thinks of it as the best thing in the console. Jeez I just want to play games.

Biotasticmeat

Everyone stop complaining! This is to be expected from Xbox live. As for you Sony fan boys you cant talk because you have to start paying for PSN and your DVR feature will probably require you to pay as well.

HA HA!

Like you actually had to call this news. EVERYTHING beyond the most basic things require a subscription to gold. You can't even browse on 360 with Windows Explorer without a subscription. :p

Just to save you from having to post other obvious things lets list other stuff.

Can't download free games without paying for Gold Subsction

Can't play online without Gold subscription.

Can't watch TV without a Gold AND 2 year contract with a local qualifying Cable provider.

Can't use Skype without Gold Subscription.

Can't use your Netflix account without a Gold subscription

Can't use apps without a Gold subscription

Can't damn well do anything worth mentioning without a Gold subscription.

It's really rather sad that the closed environment of a console is being used to shift the balance of power away from the consumer to the manufacturer.

Sony still seems to 'get' what players are willing to stomach paying for, while the PC operates in a free market economy (balanced out by its slightly higher entrance price point).

I don't see how MS can survive if people actually critically look at what they're being offered.

Have you guys learned anything? The least you can do right now is make yourselves look less greedy. Why is it so hard to do that?

In a few years or so you will have to pay xbox live gold to play a game at all!

How about having the kinect operate behind a Paywall, then us players wont have to put up with it? ha.

The only thing that XboxLive has over any console competition is 8 person multi game party chat and a few other apps. (that immediately gets ruled out if you pay for them) Once any console PS4 etc.. Offers Multigame Party Chat..  It's gonna be a SharK eat SharK Frenzy..

IT's kinda hard being a fan of Microsoft XboxOne.  Being a XboxLive Beta & User for 10+ years since 2003. I definitely welcome all PS only fans to do their thing.  Shit I don't or they really don't even have to stab MS. MS is doing "ONE" helluva great job of just stabbing themselves repeatedly with these reports..   LOL.

My god I'd give my right testis to go back to the days when you could buy a console plus a game and that was the end of the transaction.

@CrazyLeyther Wrong, loser. It's us who doesn't owe Microsoft. They want our money. If they want it, then they should give the consumers what they want. Don't be ignorant.

@Archaicc I love how you lack the intelligence to understand what's really going on. $60 a year? Why would I pay $60 a year for crap I can access for free elsewhere?

Leeric420
Leeric420

@Archaicc Except your just talking about playing online in games, which Microsoft does have to pay money for server upkeep, people are pissed because they cant use the features, that require Microsoft 0 upkeep without a subscription. Like Skype which is free...and netflix which if you have an account shouldnt require gold to use. Its not about the money, its about the value of that dollar. Get a clue dumbass.

dreamcast210

@Heshertonfist I agree.

Also, please allow me to talk on my cell phone without charging me, please. After all, the phone can already do it. I shouldn't have to pay for it.

@Grenadeh I don't mind paying for services, but having to be a Gold member to use Netflix is downright stupid, since it doesn't even use MS' network and every other devices do not have that restriction.

northArrow

@Grenadeh Another ignorant comment from Grenadeh. How surprising

It isn't that we have to pay for things, the issue is what we're paying for and why.

Why the hell does Microsoft get a cut for users watching Netflix? I'm willing to pay Netflix, because they're providing me the service, I'm not willing to pay Microsoft for it, they're doing nothing.

Toyota doesn't get a cut of the French fry business whenever someone uses the drive thru at McDonald's

Heshertonfist
Heshertonfist

@Grenadeh I think it's mostly the fact that people are tired of having everything gaming related sectioned off by fees.

Archaicc

Pound the worst part of your post is that you lack the intelligence to even understand my point. Its sad. Anyhow, you don't have to pay for those features...feel free to use those services other places for free. Also, in my original post I was talking about losers complaining about the Dvr functionality. I think you need to get a real job if you are coerned about $60

Archaicc
Archaicc

@Leeric420@Archaicc @Leeric420 @Archaicc get a clue?

Cause you cant watch Netflix and use Skype on other devices....like the 360, or the ever dreaded PC.

Apparently you buy your games system for things other then gaming whereas I could give a crap about using Netflix on my Xbox.  On top of that, I didnt even mention comments in regards to Netflix/Skype.   I was specifically talk about people complaining about DVR functionality and requiring Gold.  Get your facts straight.

@northArrow @Grenadeh Because you can watch netflix on an xbox....so technically microsoft is doing something. Not much but something.

telaros
telaros

@northArrow @telaros Not for the so called features anyways. I'm a gamer though and not some filthy casual so it'll depend on what quality games they dish out. After all, who buys a console so they can skype and facebook all day?

Life has enough distractions and there are times I want to get away from the world and get into something fun that's challenging.

Not just mobs do more damage and take longer to kill while having no real changes other than increased stats either...

The ps4 and Xbox One are essentially the same with minor differences overall. All this convoluted stuff of how much stapled features they have mean very little in the end. It's just to make casuals think they are somehow getting what they pay for.

Which, if based on features alone, it's pretty useless if you don't buy or wish to have subscriptions on your console. But so would the ps4 now that it'll require a subscription too; though cheaper, it's still requires you to use features, though supposedly browsing is still free

Support whatever the hell has the games that make you happy. Fuck the features, do they even GAME? That's what people need to focus on.

@Archaicc @Leeric420 Since you seem so smart, can you please explain why for RECORDING the SP gameplay, which makes no use of network resources whatsoever, one has to subscribe to a network service?

Cell phone is not a proper noun, no need for a C. You show why I don't correct others sentence structure on online post. I make mistakes and am not going to take the time to correct them in such an informal setting. You can combine two simple statements into one sentence. The structure is more subject to current trends then actual rules, as they the rules vary with trends.
