Xbox One development began in late 2010

Microsoft says it began work in earnest of next-generation platform nearly three years ago; over 100 concepts evolved into Xbox One.

by

Microsoft began work in earnest on the Xbox One in late 2010, the company explained in a new video posted to the Xbox Wire.

"We started back in 2010; late 2010. And got the team together and really had fun," Sr. Principal Creative Director at Xbox Carl Ledbetter said. "At the beginning, we created a number of concepts and we started really refining those ideas."

By comparison, PlayStation 4 lead system architect Mark Cerny said Sony began "thinking about" its next-generation platform in 2007. It isn't clear, though, when the company began actual work on the system.

Elsewhere in the video, senior Xbox industrial designer Scott Dallmeyer revealed Microsoft created hundreds of different concepts that eventually evolved in the Xbox One.

The Xbox One launches later this year. For more on the platform, check out GameSpot's extended coverage.

Funny, got here from the PS4's news hub, though it's a Xbox One article (in fact, there's a lot of X1 news there).

Then I went to the Xbox One's news hub, and realized that there are no articles on the PS4.

Care to explain this Gamespot?

FUNNY, hundreds of concepts and they finally come up with a VCR. Crazy to think these boys get paid big money for thinking up this terrible dog mess!!!!

I am through with all the XBOX hate cause it is getting boring each day. Honestly, I am not a fan of their antiques and their PR practices one bit. Still, I feel the XBONE has something to offer this E3. If the games are good, or even on par with their 360 titles, I might buy one. Till then, I am going to wait. But one thing is for sure, I am getting the PS4 on launch day.

We started back in 2010; late 2010. And got the team together to ruin nextgen with XBone and really had fun," Sr. Principal Creative Director at Xbox Carl Ledbetter said.

See, in 2010 Bill Gates started eating nothing but PF Changs.  Now he's on the assembly line, unloading his ass, so there are enough XBOX ONE's for Christmas.

Wow, you'd think in all that time, someone would've realized so many of their ideas for that system were just awful.

the best desicion they could have made for the look of the actual box would have been to reveal all of their idea's on a website and have people vote for their favorite to get an idea of what to release

So many designers to create this ugly box!Its the ugliest gaming console ever!It reminds me the kitsch design of the 80's,even the first xbox it was looking prettier, biggest luck of imagination and beauty. And this is the smallest problem in this ugly box.

So, it began when we started hearing all of these rumors which MS kept denying.... Only to find out were true during that announcement event.

I think the design is quite decent

The modern times tend to do go back to basic geometry in many design themes. And i think the X theme (dark grey cross black)  works ok.

They could and will make a slim version that will fix the over size and make the exact same design look way better.

btw : still wont buy it cause of the other stuff

Wait, so 3 years to develop a console and you still got it wrong? Way to go, M$.

So far i only see possible problems...

No replaceable HDD - HDD dies, console wont start, unless it runs OS from external usb hdd (REALLY doubt that).

Running 3 OS at the same time - Current gen running only 1 OS already has more freezes and crashes than we would like, imagine running 3 OS (being the gaming OS a secondary OS!).

well, well. using the exact same logic as the xbox trolls used on the Wii U, Xbox one started development 3 years ago therefore uses old tech and can't be considered next gen. Had to be said.

@cirugo All you have bits and pieces of information....how can you judge it so soon? People like you annoy the living f*** out of me, give it some time and wait and make your judgment when all the facts are out on both systems

@sgt_F79 @ManatuBeard You cant remove the HDD like the 360/PS3. They confirmed that. The only way is to send it to be repaired and pay for them to put a new one, unless you want to lose the warranty.

What are you talking about? You can replace the hard drive on the ps3 and you don't get shafted into an over priced one made by Microscam
