Xbox One dashboard shown off in new video

12-minute live demo introduces players to next-generation console's user interface and various features.

With two weeks to go before launch, Microsoft today released a 12-minute live demo of the Xbox One's dashboard.

Presented by Xbox executives Marc Whitten and Yusuf Mehdi, the video was recorded on November 1 and features live code from an Xbox One, Microsoft said.

The comprehensive video shows off various Xbox One features, including biometric sign-in, Live TV, Skype, GameDVR, OneGuide, and instant switching, among other things.

Microsoft also today announced a list of entertainment applications--broken down by region--that will be available between launch on November 22 and spring 2014.

--"What's on [TV]?"

That's something I haven't asked in a loooong time.

TV is a rotting corpse, waiting to be buried with the outgoing generation.

I thought with kinect "You are the controller", yet they keep reaching for the controller half of the time (forza being the understandable exception).

"XBox, why do I feel like I'm talking to myself?"

i love the fact that you can not do most that without live (step for watch tv and play offline games) and they quickly tell you that right at the end, also you need a decent tv to use them as well. i'll feel sorry for kids who get this for christmas and a game but the parents didn't buy live and can't afford to pay for it cause they're tapped out, the kid wouldn't be able to watch movies online, record the gameplay, use the browser, use the apps and save games on the cloud (any many other things). the whole voice commands is cool and i really like the fact that everything runs smooth and it recognizes you and logs you in (though very creepy). but that windows 8 layout is not very nice and if its anything like my windows phones i've used the live tiles won't work and apps will never be updated or even be there.

No one every said that one hundred dollars more was specifically for the camera. There is tech in the XBO that is not in the PS4.  Not talking power only.

The switching shows why one practical reason they wanted games to be downloaded to the console.  Switching with a disc could stress the game as the console would have to keep reading it and analyzing it each time you switch back to the game.

This makes me think of Continuum. Imagine if ARC had Kinects to magically hack into.

Damn I must admit that looked pretty cool. I'm jealous the PS4 won't have that level of integration.

The dashboard just looks bland and generic. As if they came up with the laziest design they could come up. A bunch of squares which are perfect for filling with ads down the road. It looks a bit less awful than the Metro interface for Windows 8, but not much.

"XBOX... Go to Forza Motorsport 5"... wow... he could of literally clicked faster than that seeing as it was already highlighted.

I just don't like all the blocks. But it seems nice regardless.

This video is not "live". The system clock goes through at least 48 mins during this 12 min video. It appears on the bottom right early on, then late in the video the clock is on the left side bar. Early on in the video the clock says "12:02" then late in the video it appears at "12:49".  Obviously there is a lot of time unaccounted for.

I think the features are neat, but I never get why people would want to talk to a computer or do video chat.  I love iron man, but I find it is silly.

This is what the extra $100 is for. It's truly innovative and impressive. Most people on here will bash it just because it's Microsoft, but it's pretty cool stuff. Makes it feel truly like a next gen console IMO.

@neowarrior121 I love how you think a kid would think about these online possibilities without having online available. I guess those parents wouldn't enjoy their PC much either.

@Razarealm See, comments like this make me happy. Its neutral, non biased, not insulting, and wont make anybody squeeze out a kidney stone.

@soda128 I like this. It seems like Xbox is catering to everything! there's more to a console than just a graphics card guys!

@Fursnake  those squares are live tiles and they are awesome. I have a windows phone and i will never use anything else.

@crazy-roman haha i was thinking the same thing XD. I was like "Dude the 'A' button is right their! "

@crazy-roman If it wasn't highlighted he would have gotten there faster with voice. If the controller was on the couch and you were walking to it you could set things up before you sat down with voice recognition.

@mj4man It's an edited clip of the XONE working in real time "live" not being streamed live..The dashboard in action.

@crognalsen I guess you've never been away from your friends and family and had a need for video chat. I've lived around the world and every now and again, I like to see what my mom, dad, sisters and brothers look like.

neowarrior121
neowarrior121

@Nintendad @Fursnake so you have a phone that is unable to take the battery out of, barley any new apps and many live tiles that don't work. i should know i've owned 2 of them and i would happily destroy the one i have if i could afford to do so.

crazy-roman
crazy-roman

@soda128 @crazy-roman Yeah, not doubting that. Also that's a mouthful, surely he can just say XBOX, Go to Forza 5 or something. Tbh, I am not a fan of all this voice control. What happens with multi logins and each person is saying mid game different things. Can that keep switching profile and going in and out of things as that could be a mess.

mj4man
mj4man

@casshan01 Ok. No. I think this posting would lead people to believe this is a live video. It is not. That's all. If you allow that a video can be edited for time and still be called live, then what does live signify? That it's a video that has clips from reality? I think "live action" is used for that. You could say this is a "live action" video as opposed to animated, sure. I don't intend to hurt someone's feelings or make them feel bad or bring them down. I just think it's misleading to call it "live" in any sense.

I intended my post as a service for those who may interpret this video as a real time sequential video showing real time interaction with the xbox one.

Now, that's not saying anything bad about Microsoft. They may have edited it for any number of reasons, and they don't claim that it's "live".

I also don't intend to bring down the person who posted this article. I don't think making a mistake means you are unintelligent or not good at what you are doing, it's just a mistake. It's not that big of a deal. But I did not expect people to disagree with the definition of "live". Or think I'm bashing anybody.

mj4man
mj4man

@daemonproject It is not "real time" to fit 48 mins into 12 mins that leaves out 36 mins of "real time". You can't say that's "live". Microsoft doesn't even claim it is "live" on their youtube channel.

mj4man
mj4man

@cvjr I'm not angry with you or bashing you. I wish you well.

mj4man
mj4man

@cvjr Is it my lack of brevity that you are pointing out?  Is this better?

This video is not "live". It's edited.

Choad-Warrior
Choad-Warrior

Sure...but then it isn't "live" if there is time cut off due to any number of reasons. Though for the most part the video is on track with that clock.

@bubba_1988 @xbox_owns_slavestation4 No, there shouldn't You don't seem to understand that, if it was not released with the system, the Kinect could possible be under utilized or completely ignored, pretty much what has been happening to the PS Eye. With every single Xbox One owner having a Kinect too, it will motivate developers to use the damn thing.

cvantu
cvantu

@crazy-roman @xbox_owns_slavestation4 that is as closed minded one can be. It's excellent technology, and just the beginning. The ability to read your head motions in Forza, motion capture your own animated creations in Project Spark, scan your Live codes, and add additional functionality "buttons" with your voice, are all things the device can already do.

Danny_KickAzz

@neowarrior121 @Nintendad @Fursnake You must be joking. I love LOVE my Windows phone (HTC 8X) Im very much happy with it, I found every app that i used to have on my iphone(4s). Yes Im also talking about Vine, and instagram, yes they are clients but Damn Fine clients that even rival the official.  Plus the phone isnt buggy/laggy like my old POS  Android phone. In the end to each his own.

crazy-roman
crazy-roman

@cvantu @crazy-roman @soda128 Not true at all... they demonstrate favourites at the end, one guy was on his little favourites, the other guy simply said "XBOX... Show guide" Which seems that it can identify the voice but load whatever they want, whenever, as long as they are logged in. So, without having to take control with show my stuff etc. So potentially, it could be mid game and another could just say... "XBOX... show guide" and bam, it's switched.

cvantu
cvantu

@crazy-roman @soda128 the Kinect reads your voice, and as pointed in the video, you have to say "Xbox, show my stuff" before it will register someone else. So unless you have a bunch of friends that always say, "Xbox, show my stuff" I think you'll be fine.

cvantu
cvantu

@crognalsen @cvjr maybe it is because you didn't know life before cell phones (I said maybe). Being able to talk and chat while seeing someone is as close to them being there as you're going to get. Choosing typing over actual face conversation is a huge problem nowadays. If my friends and family are living away from me, I would like to see them and speak as if they are right there than choose your two options any day.

crazy-roman
crazy-roman

@cvantu @crazy-roman @xbox_owns_slavestation4 Yeah, the majority of it is still stuff the old kinect could potentially do, I can't see the justification in another $100 for it all. The new kinect is more precise, but still what you mentioned, no doubt the original kinect could do. So what is new? Furthermore, the things you have mentioned. I don't see myself personally buying into any of it, none of the games I enjoy warrant any of those features. I don't need extra buttons for what the controller can do. The codes is cool but again, I never thought... damn I wish I could pay someone more money so I could enter this code quicker. But you could add a keyboard to make it quicker. I buy the consoles for the games, but is there even one big killer app for the Kinect?
