Xbox One controllers will eventually work on PC, rumors to the contrary are "100% wrong"

Microsoft's Albert Penello says when the drivers become available, the Xbox One controller you already own will work on PC.

Reports that Xbox One controllers will not work on PC are flat-out wrong, Microsoft director of product planning Albert Penello said in a post on NeoGAF. He said when the drivers do become available (there's no word on when this will be), you will not need to buy a separate controller.

"This is 100% wrong," Penello said about the rumors. "When the drivers become available, they will work with the existing controllers. There is no plan to do a new, separate controller that only works on Windows. The Xbox One controller you have today will work."

"It will be the same as it is on Xbox 360," Penello added.

Though you won't need to buy a separate Xbox One controller to play on PC, Penello said Microsoft might one day release a special PC-specific Xbox One controller, just as the company offers today for the Xbox 360.

Though Microsoft has yet to release the drivers that will allow your Xbox One controller to work on PC, one enterprising modder has found an (unofficial) way to make it work.

BS! They already have the PC drivers. They used them when they showed off the Titanfall demo on PC.

That does not matter.  The point is, it didn't work when it came out.  The point is, it's march and it still doesn't work.  It's Microsoft.  It should have worked from day one.

maybe i'll just be fine with my 360 controller.

Yeah, you won't need to buy a separate controller, you'll just need to buy the goddamn wireless adapter to use it because Microsoft refuses to use existing wireless standards. Same as the 360 controller. So NO, it will NEVER work right out of the box with a PC, which is fucking retarded.

meanwhile you can already use ds4 on windows. and you can even use bluetooth, the touchpad and change the colour of the light bar to whatever you want, and you can even use the light bar as a battery indicator using 2 diff colours for low and full and it fades the hue between the 2 as the battery drains.

Microsoft needs to get this out soon, please!

The most painful part about the XB1 and PS4 not being backward compatible is that their controllers are superior to previous generation systems in every possible way, yet I can't enjoy my existing game library with them.  Meanwhile, there's very few worthwhile games on the new systems that I'm willing to pay full price for.

I use the 360 controller for most of my games....now i cant even image playing games like AC with mouse and keyboard

I need a new controller for my PC...I refuse to buy one until this is available....Microsoft, stop making me wait! I know the drivers exist, and the ability to connect it exists too...Just release the damn stuff already, and sell more peripherals to PC owners that weren't going to buy your console anyway...

As long as the d-pad is better than the 360 utter garbage. The rest of the controller is great, but my does that d-pad annoy me.

Why not release the drivers?  There must be a financial reason.

Hoping the build quality on the Xbox One controller is better than that of the Xbox 360 controller. Every Xbox 360 controller I've owned had some sort of analog drift. It astounds me because my Logitech F310 has never given me such a problem, and that controller can even switch between D, and X-input, which is handy for older games. It would be the perfect PC controller if the triggers weren't the worst, bulkiest, f*cking triggers ever designed. (-_-")

Why wait to release them? Do Microsoft really think people buy Xbox Ones just for the controller? Having it work on PC at the same time isn't going to affect your Xbox sales, can't you see that?

The Xbox. One runs on the Windows Kernel. The hardware is damn-near identical to a standard PC. Yet, somehow Microsoft doesn't have a driver for Windows?

I think they have a driver that, while it may be missing some advanced features, would get people going on PC.

My guess is the delay is to further encourage people to buy Xbox One consoles and less about the driver not being ready.

You'll probably need to buy a special adapter to use it on the PC.   They did this crap with the Xbox 360 and the 360 wireless adapter.  A ripoff.

Thanatos2k

Why don't they work with PCs now?  Can Microsoft explain that one?  How did they even launch the product without PC support?  It's absolutely inexcusable.

why not make them work from the get go........

anyhow, they are a lot of better controllers for the PC out already instead of this crap

Stiler

They could have simply made the xbox one controllers work seamlessly with the PC like the 360 does, simple plug in the usb and play, but noooooo.

so thats cool but how much difference is there between the xone and 360  controller would there be a reason to get one over keeping my 360 controller and yes i know that this apples mostly to people who have an xbone and just want to plug that controller into there pc i'm asking for the rest of us

Let me get a few things straight here:

He said: "The xbox One controller you already own." He is assuming we already either have a Xbone or a Xbone controller

WHAT?

1.Most PC gamers wont buy a Xbox one, at least the ones I know.

2.Why would I as a PC gamer buy an Xbox one Controller if it doesnt work, or I dont even know when it will work?

3.The DS4 already works with PC with a few steps.

You were outrun by PS this time, I am a pc gamer, my steam account has more than 300 games, I have a xbox 360 gamepad and a DS3, the ds3 gives me cramps in my hands, so I preferred my xbox 360 one, but this time, I will gow ith DS4, it seems it will work earlier, plus its comofortable for the first time. Also price.

Keep diggin that grave.

@rarson  Ahem. Micro-USB (any Android smartphone charger) support. That is all.

@kitmeep They have the drivers, they are just choosing not to release them to the general public. Don't hold your breath it can be a while.

Gallowhand

@kitmeep   Funny you should say that, because I plan to keep using my X360 controller for now, and then switch to the Steam controller when it releases.

@McGregor  You should let them be... they already got their hands full... f**ks haven't figured out how to get their games to run at 1080p... probably they'll introduce the all new next-next-gen-but-still-crap.... 'X-ONE-ZERO-EIGHT-ZERO-P' at E3 2014 :D :P

Thanatos2k

@Hvac0120 Which is absolutely inexplicable if you really think about it.  Microsoft is a company that sells PC operating systems, yet they seem to be trying to do everything in their power to drive people away from PCs.

Silvis121

@Hvac0120  I have a feeling it has to do with the PC and X1 cross over that that we all know they want.

obsequies

@allever  the wireless 360 controller didn't even output data through the stupid USB cable. Only power. It was designed this way to save money which is strange since the ds3 had more technology in it, could push data through usb and cost the same. Go figure

glacius_x
glacius_x

@Thanatos2k You must have not been around for the 360 controller then. It was the same scenario.

Spartan_418
Spartan_418

@rmartinezdl You're really reaching for things to complain about. He's not "assuming" that YOU already have an Xbone or Xbone controller, he's just saying that for the benefit of those who do.

It's absurd for you to assume that NONE of the millions of Xbone owners are also PC gamers, there is going to be some overlap.

The rumor was that MS would release a separate PC-only controller, and that existing Xbone controllers would never work on PC. He's simply clarifying that the rumor isn't true.

I use a DS4 on PC and it works great, but I prefer the feel of the Xbone controller.

Is there really anything wrong with people having more options?

rarson
rarson

@RonnieJay

Apparently you're not familiar with how Xbox controllers interface with a PC. For starters, a micro-USB cord is USELESS, because there's no micro-USB port on ANY Xbox controller. Secondly, in order to CHARGE the controller, you need the Charge-and-Play kit which includes a battery pack and charging cord. It does NOT include a wireless dongle. You need the wireless dongle in order to actually use a Wireless 360 controller with a PC.

So, in order to use any Xbox controller with a PC, at the bare minimum you need the wireless dongle which doesn't include charging functionality. I have no idea why you mentioned micro-USB.

zielak-pl

@RonnieJay @rarson  Yeah, I really want my cable to break that micro USB socket in the heat of action... It might happen! Thats why some of us need wireless :(

@Silvis121 mind explaining this proposed cross over? Can't tell if you're being sarcastic or talking about a rumor.

@glacius_x @Thanatos2k  At the time Microsoft didn't realize how successful it would be...With what they know now, not having this controller working doesn't make sense. They have to know people are lined up to buy these things when the drivers are released (I for one am ready to buy as soon as they release drivers). Part of me thinks they are working on a way to make it Windows 8.x exclusive in order to force users to update (not upgrade, because I don't believe it is one until they dump that metro interface on non-touch screen models).

rmartinezdl
rmartinezdl

@Dack_Lancer @rmartinezdl  Yes i use it specially for Counter Strike, duh, obviously I use it for games specially designed for Controller, like darksouls, la noire, racing games, etc.
