Xbox One can play games while they're being installed

Microsoft confirms disc-based games will allow for play during install, but did not confirm a similar feature for Xbox Live downloads.

by

A Microsoft representative has told Polygon that the Xbox One will let users play games while they're being installed onto the console.

The company said that gamers can play disc-based games while they're being installed to the system's hard drive, with all disc-based titles requiring an install.

Microsoft has yet to confirm whether this applies to titles downloaded from Xbox Live.

In a recent interview, Microsoft's chief product officer, Marc Whitten, said that the company has not done enough to communicate the benefits of the Xbox One.

The Xbox One is due for release this November for $500.

Cool!  You can start playing your game instead of getting a cup of water and taking a piss then coming back and playing your game.

Great selling point.  This is like saying you can use your controller while it's charging.

Doesn't Sony's PS4 already have this feature.  I know you can play games while they are downloading so I would assume installs would be the same.

In any case why on earth did it take MS this long to publish this fact?  Geez they are going to have a horrid launch if they dont get their heads out of their asses.

While I like the fact that you can still install games on the Xbox One, they are still behind Sony. Quite a few multiplatform releases allowed you to install the game as you played it on the PS3, but on the 360 you had to actually go in and install the disc. The PS4 will in fact still be the same way, but apparently with ALL games instead of a select few.

now I cant wait to see people beat these crap games before the game finishes even installing.

lol. sony fanboys. such jealousy. the xb1 system is so much better. tv integration, my fantastic kinnect technology all bundled together. i'd be jealous too if I had a ps4 with no such complete integration.

An ingenious solution to a problem that never should have existed in the first place...

next news: microsoft will allow indies to self-publish... come on, are you even trying? most of the xbox news i've seen was almost copy of ps4's features previously annouced

Windows Vista "could" do this.

Way to push the envelope backwards.

sony had announced that you can play games while they are downloading, which I think is a cool feature given the considerable download times for games. but allowing to play games while they are being installed off a disc does not seem to be of much value, except that it will save you a few minutes.

Sony touted this at PS4 reveal.  This isn't a special feature...  simply a feature MS had to incorporate in order to compete.

So this is a feature Microsoft is touting? Must be desperate.

Id bet good money that if you play while it installs the game performance takes a hit because it has to use system resources and access the disk to install and play at once probably increasing the install time 5x.

Personally I have the patience to wait a couple minutes for a game to install.

Well that's good you can play a disk based game that you put in your game system while it's being installed. But seriously, this is making less sense of why disk based games have to be installed on the Xbox One in the first place!

It literally takes no more than 10 minutes. Maybe 15 minutes tops. I really dont see this is as any sort of hindrance but its better to have features than to not I suppose.

So far, so good, Microsoft. Keep up the improved PR, I say. I can also imagine that downloaded games work differently and aren't eligible for this. Makes sense.

... Drat, I'll really have to go back to pre-reversal policies to badger Microsoft, won't I? Unless they screw up again. I hope not, for their sake...

Bless their hearts. This is actually a good thing, and an improvement. I always hated buying a new game, then having to wait for it to be installed before I could play it! But unfortunately, I'm getting a PS4 :p A little too late MS

@huerito323 Sega started online play with the Dreamcast and even started with the Saturn which had some online features at the end of it's lifespan, so we don't have MS to thank for online console play we have Sega to thank for always being first to try and usually take a hit on the chin for being pioneers.

Um, this doesn't really rock my world in terms of selling points.  I would pile on the X-Bone and say "Gee, everything sucks so bad that they have to dig THIS deep to find a positive headline"..... but I won't.

*takes the high moral ground*

I think both upcoming consoles will have this option but I'd like to see downloadable games streaming from cloud computing until it's done downloading and can use the console for power

@Speranza318 You can use your controller while charging. At least with the Xbox 360 you could. I doubt that will change with the XBox One.

@Kemutsemu Actually it couldn't. Almost all PC games can't be played while installing. The only exceptions are MMOs.

@epicgameresearc Wow you Sony fanboys are pathetically retarded. Microsoft said they were forcing mandatory installs. Ergo, they are fixing it so you can play games while they are installing. It's not a copy of Sony, it's the next logical step. Fucking idiots.

@guitarist1980

Xbone wont have a 12x BD drive like 360 has a 12x dvd drive. I would guess that it has a 6x speed BD drive max. and don't forget that the games are getting bigger and bigger.

@ken_wakashimazu This is obviously in response to Sony announcing a similar feature which everyone hailed as the greatest thing ever.

@mkeezay22 @huerito323 Dreamcast also was a miserable failure and the internet was too shit at the time for that to matter. Xbox brought functional online play to consoles.

@mkeezay22 @huerito323 XB is more of a pioneer than sega and dreamcast ever were, thats why they are getting all this heat, MS took a big risk with the XB1 wtih all the things they brought to the table, things that sony wanted to do but had a smarter ad more safer approach because they are a failing market and needed the PS4 to do well

@blown503 Any electronic you have plugged into an outlet in your home is wasting electricity. You know that right? lol!! It doesn't have to be on, like the toaster or a blender.
