Xbox One and Xbox 360 Free July Games With Gold Titles Include Guacamelee

Only one of the two free games offered to Xbox One owners will be new next month.

Microsoft has announced the free games that Xbox Live Gold members will receive in July, and it includes four games in total--one of which was already made free during June.

As the Games with Gold program is still new to Xbox One (it only started earlier this month), we're still learning about how Microsoft will handle things. It seems that the free games offered won't necessarily be swapped out every month, as Max: The Curse of Brotherhood--one of the two free games in June--will remain free throughout July. Halo: Spartan Assault, on the other hand, will go back to its regular price on July 1, when Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition will be made free in its place.

On the Xbox 360, Gotham City Impostors will be the free title beginning on July 1. On July 16, it will be replaced for the remainder of the month by BattleBlock Theater.

The Games with Gold initiative works a lot like PlayStation Plus' Instant Game Collection on Xbox One. Xbox Live Gold members only have access to the games included for as long as they remain Gold subscribers, although they can continue to play the free games they've downloaded even after their original price is reinstated.

Xbox One:

  • Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition -- This version of the excellent Metroidvania-style game adds new bosses, enemies, powers, and more. Read GameSpot's review
  • Max: The Curse of Brotherhood -- This platformer is already free if you're a Gold member, so grab it now if you're interested. Read GameSpot's review

I'll try Guacamelee, though I haven't been interested in it ever since it came out when I had a Vita.  Might be fun, though.  Gonna try Max at some point.  Spartan Assault is pretty win, people should jump on that before the week is up.

Last month was great but these titles are kind of weak.

I'm guessing MS wont ever release Mass Effect 2 or 3 for free anytime soon then eh?

okay, im getting tired of these old/mediocre games theyve been offering us. usually my situation is, i either played the hell out of the games when they first came out or the game is just plain meh.

I'm still not complaining but frankly, I don't care for those games. If I wanted battleblock I'd buy it on Steam.

so MS isn't completely screwing the XB1 folks.... maybe just the tip

Battleblock theatre is awesome. Will def be downloading that. Gotham City imposters is also fun but nobody plays it now.... Hopefully, this will help populate it some more. For Xbox one, slightly annoying that it's Max and the curse of the brotherhood again (as it was last month) but I've heard good things about guacamelee. Not too bad but I'm sure they could have picked something instead of Max, which is still a pretty good platformer that I highly reccomend.

Battleblock Theater was one of my favorite games all last gen! It's a true "gem"

Great games. Nice job Microsoft. I'll be downloading both on my Xbox 360.

I know it's early days yet but microsoft made a conscious effort to copy sony's ps plus subscription model, you would think they would offer better games than this to take it to sony who at the moment has the best rewards system going, fingers crossed microsoft can offer something better in the future.

Poor show MS! Those are terrible choices, but then you knew that already.

These games were on sale not too long ago.

Geez..

An here I was thinking some of the PS4 owners were bad at complaining at free stuff.  Xbox users have taken their sense of entitlement to the next level :|

It's the start of the console lifecycle, they're not going to give you free AAA games.  In fact they don't even have to give you free games anyway.

If you've already played them or have no interest then unlucky.  If you haven't then maybe you should try them out?  Indie titles are good fun, different and actually experiment a little.

Why people think they 'deserve' anything is beyond me.  Quit complaining at free games.

I'm a little disappointed that we keep getting arcade and other "B role" games. I'm not saying we're getting bad games, I just hoped we'd get like a AAA launch title or something. Give me Blackflag, Ryse, Forza, something with a little more substance. Curse of the Brotherhood and Spartan Assault are only a few hours each.

lame! Give us 2 new games on XB1. Anyone who wants to get Curse of the Brotherhood should already have it. It's been free for a while. Give us something new!

I'm interested in trying out Guacamelee S.T.C. Ed. I hope this doesn't mean we will only get one "new" free "game with gold" per month on the XB1 instead of 2 though. Now that the XB1 version of games with gold requires gold membership to keep playing I had hoped they might be able to do a bit more with it. That said, I'm happy they've extended the service to their new system and look forward to playing anything they see fit to give us.

My wife and I have been taking turns playing through Max. It's a fun game but it's annoying that like Halo: SA, there's no couch co-op. Is there local co-op on Guacamelee?

Great. Now Xbox gamers can't say we "rent" the games anymore. Exited to play strider next month.

So excited to play Guacemelee, wanted to play it ever since it was on Playstation. Was already going to purchase it by so happy to get it for free, sah-weet.

Max Curse of Brotherhood is actually a pretty good game once you get into it.  I'm not a big platformer fan  ( I actually love watching people play them but dont really like playing them) but I play this one a bit everyday.

I was excited to hear what we would get on the xbox one but now I'm not lol 1 game really?

Guacamelee is like $2 right now in the Steam Summer Sale.  How generous of Microsoft!

@willjohnboy Yeah...gotta say, weak for the XOne. the 360 titles are acceptable. but not the best offering ever. But no biggie--I already have more games from this than i have time to play, so it really doesn't affect me.

@sakaixx

Wow really ? It was my GOTY for 2013 and definitely the best example of metroidvania since Super Metroid.

It isn't Xbox users whining about the Xbox One titles.  It is the usual PS-only hate crowd.

johnman05

@themc_7 Most likely not going to see a free AAA title until the console (XONE) and it's current library of games have aged at least a year or two. It would be nice to have the choice of a free AAA title now, but highly unlikely at the present time.

@001011000101101 same here.....best games were hitman absolution , Dark souls and street fighter....this whole month is wasted.... :(

@oflow i'm not into platformers, either, but i'm having some fun with Max.

Either way, it'll be my first xbox one game.

@oflow I think it's a solid 8 or 8.5, I really had a lot of fun with it. Nice visuals, fun platform and puzzles, and just a solid game. Very underrated, hope their eventual new game will be as good.

@durkinderps Yeah carrying over the same game from the previous month is a bit disappointing :).

MrFreehuggs

@Thanatos2k The game hasn't even come out yet on Xbox One or PS4. That means Microsoft is making a new release free. Also, you still have to pay $2 for it on steam and it will be $15 again after the sale. But if you want to look at it from your point of view, Steam is charging you $2 for a free game.

rheaburton

So when ps+ had bf3 it was 5.49 on origin ? Or saints row, or any other game, steam will always beat consoles.

@Thanatos2k To be fair they are limited by the amount of content available on the system and deals they can make with publishers.

Great is subjective, but that is not what I said is it? I said they were in a sale not too long ago.

Actually I see I typed it wrong but that is what I meant.

I have it, so it is a bit of a waste for me, but BB Theater is an amazing game.
