Xbox One 50hz TV bug will be fixed in a matter of weeks, says Microsoft

Live TV bug to be quashed long before the Football World Cup.

by

Microsoft will soon fix a major Xbox One fault that has affected the machine's ability to accurately play UK and European PAL television signals, the company has confirmed to GameSpot.

The 'juddering' fault, which is caused by the Xbox One's 60hz refresh rate clashing with the 50hz signal used by many major TV providers, such as Sky and Virgin, will be fixed this Spring.

"I can't give you a precise date, but it is just a matter of weeks before that will get fixed," Xbox UK marketing boss Harvey Eagle said to GameSpot, reiterating that the problem will be resolved long before the Football World Cup kicks off in June.

The update will rollout as part of an Xbox One system update, although Microsoft has not said how it will specifically solve the issue.

Microsoft today also announced that the UK will receive a £30 price cut to the Xbox One, and that the company will also be throwing in a free copy of Titanfall while stocks last.

This makes no sense. GPUS output at a framerate measured in FPS not the same as a display measured in Hz. That makes me wonder what is actually happening...

I blame the British for not changing to 60hz rate.

I live in NY and my XB1 was fukin up  my tv so bad with freezing and black screens that I had to put my dvr back directly into the tv. I'm a cable tech so my house is wired perfectly. But since the last system update it's been much better. Don't know how they managed to fuck up the two main features that define the XB1, the live tv and Kinect. Don Mattrick really made a mess of the Xbox before he left. He should be tar & feathered.

How did they manage to make that mistake when most of their advertising leading up to the sale of the Xbox One was about TV and Cable Box interaction?

You mean they didn't plan ahead for this PAL difference? Microsoft really is full of morons.

That's what you euros get for using 50hz signals instead of our 60hz system and since the TV is an American invention along with most modern things, you should have been doing things our way from the beginning. The American way is always the right way!

So it can't even do the work of a TV box properly. At least it's still a good paperholder. Until it eventually overheats and burns the papers, that is.

They really are taking their sweet leisurely time with this fix. Oh Microsoft, this was the second most successful country for the Xbox 360 and this is how you repay us? I'm afraid Sony have retaken the high ground now. If Xbox only focuses on US features, then it will struggle to sell anywhere else in the world.

Is it ironic that when something finally needs the Xbone to run something below 60fps it messes it up? :p

It will be interesting to see how they fix this as the games run at 60hz and it would be impossible to have one half of the screen refresh at 60hz while the other refreshes at 50hz. Maybe they'll implement borders in their games like the good old days of PAL games lol.

Look this isn't a trolling post, it's a serious question:  Will the X1 output a 1080p/60 signal if that's what's going into it off your cable?  (There's a few stations I get that actually do come in the wall at 1080p.  Go figure.)

Guess it's hard to re-synchronize the signal when you upconvert from 30hz to 50. :-)))

Microsoft: "Yeah screw you Europe. We're being outsold 6:1 for like, no reason in your region. Oh wait, tons of reasons. Oh ok, maybe we'll fix a couple of stuff in the distant future".

Ah.. that's why it looked like crap.  I may give TV through the box another try once they get Sky onboard.. until then it's worse, not better in the UK.

Between the twitch in the controller that needs fixing and now this, I guess it just better to wait another year for them to fix everything.  Will be looking for them to release a white console too.

The real problem is that 50hz is a standard somewhere in the world.

why all the shit about MS today, first they admit their shit sucks and give it a price drop, now they need weeks to fix something a little research wouldve prevented in the first place

@Bucketnate It's simple - 50Hz TV signal, trying to run in a 60Hz 'wrapper' (as it has to maintain 60Hz in order to drop back to the home screen or open a 'snapped' application if required.

60/50 doesn't leave you with a nice even number ...

@xhawk27  I hope you are trolling, else you are really, really stupid. Whole europe uses 50Hz, and most countries outside Europe also. US is one of the few who uses 60Hz. So you could better blame US for not using 50Hz

@Mr_Big_Boss If all of the boasting about NFL deals and the like didn't clue you in that the multimedia strategy was 'USA now, rest of the world later', then now you know.

@collingtonuk
Becuse the RPi costs 30quid and its a better media player, server, nas, torrent box, etc.
Also you can get a 3d Blue ray player with DNLA for under 70quid

Consoles should be for games... stupid MS has handicapped their own console with this watch tv at the same time you game idiocy.

Honestly is there anyone playing a hardcode game and watching tv at the same time? I would have thought that the smaller screen space would end up being fatal for any gamer.

@MateykoSlam @Butt_ChunxHey, don't forget us Canucks (Canadians) also use the NTSC system. Lol.  Though I'm still going against @Butt_Chunk; the PAL signal was actually better. Before HD, the signal resolution for NTSC was 480i and PAL was 576i.  PAL had 96 more lines of resolution than NTSC.  Also, the frequency of 50Hz better matched the frame rate of movies (24p) to reduce artifacts.  NTSC signals needed to use 3:2 pulldown to achieve similar effect with the 60Hz signal.  Finally, the frequency has more to do with the AC power lines vs. quality of image (60Hz AC @ 110V, 50Hz AC @ 220V).
