Xbox One 1080p Obstacle Not Solved by DirectX 12, Witcher Dev Says

This year's upgrade to Microsoft's DirectX API will not make it easier for developers to run games at 1080p resolution on Xbox One, according to CD Projekt Red.

When the next iteration of Microsoft's DirectX software was unveiled at GDC in March, the company promised that it would bring "richer scenes, more objects, and full utilization of modern GPU hardware" for future games on Microsoft platforms. But according to one game developer, this upgraded API will not improve the ability to render games at 1080p on Xbox One.

CD Projekt Red, developer of upcoming RPG The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, stated in an interview with GamingBolt that DirectX 12 would not make it easier to run at higher resolutions. Lead engine programmer Balazs Torok explained, "Most games out there can't go 1080p because the additional load on the shading units would be too much. For all these games DX12 is not going to change anything."

Torok said that games might technically be able to run at 1080, but it won't matter because the resource cost of shading those extra pixels would be too high. "They might be able to push more triangles to the GPU but they are not going to be able to shade them, which defeats the purpose," he said.

Since the console's launch last November, there's been controversy surrounding the apparent difficulties developers have when attempting to get their games running at 1080p resolution. June's update to the Xbox One software development kit--different than DirectX--opened up an additional 10 percent processing power for developers to use, which has helped some games like Destiny reach 1080p on the console.

We've reached out to CD Projekt Red for clarification of these statements and will update the story with any new information we receive.

The Witcher 3 launches on February 24 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. According to CD Projekt Red's CEO, the developer is running into a little more difficulty with getting the game to run at 1080p on Xbox One than on PS4.

Of Course Xbox Won't Handle DirectX 12 because of the Old GPU inside it not worthy

They Didn't make the Next-generation Console Worthy, So Sad :(

oh dear. I was really hoping as we got farther into this console life cycle they'd figure these problems out. It's still early we are only in year 1 of the new consoles.

WOW that's the most absolutely slanted title of all time. Trying to completely devalue the Xbox One's graphics, while not saying that it's one person's opinion, on a game that might be the most graphically demanding of this generation.

1080p is how old standard? And Next gen consoles for kids cant handle it?
Get a PC, you dirty gaming console peasants...

who cares, it will take years if there ever would be enough good games to think about buying the console.

It won't take long till PS4 sales are to high to let 3rd partys think about exclusives on Xone, if we not already reached that point.

Sad for those who believed in the console, or just didn't notice what a bad company MS is.

Sony even makes good money by selling the PS4 only, they could easily drop the price to sell it even better, but it won't be needed for a long time, sales are 2-3 higher then Xone every week.

Ms would be wise to create some new Exclusives, just make some good games, but they still seem to think gaming consist of stupid shooters and action games and worst graphics on all systems to find on the market.

What a surpirse a softwre update didn't change this circumstances.

While PC Gamers could just laugh about all these 720p and 1080p talkin, PC Games used such resolutions for 15 years or more, PC gaming already entered 4k Resolution.

I want both consoles but I will buy most of the games for PS4.

It's sad that both console hardware makers decided to go with very average specs. Sure it's quite a step up from the previous generation but it's barely average by 2014 hardware standards.

Having said that it seems like Sony did a better job this time round with their console and invested a bit more into the longevity of the console. I'm platform agnostic and I play video games for the love of video games and not because of which platform they're released on. Having said that, currently if it's multiplatform console only stuff, PS4 seems to be having an easier time of it and that's the version I would get.

If it's on PC, then I'd get the PC version over the console version unless there are significant issues (i.e. substandard ports) and just use a x360 pad to play if need be.

Being a fan of anything really doesn't benefit anyone because it gets you too emotionally invested and blind sides you to flaws. Better to be sceptical and then be pleasantly surprised than to be overly invested and then feel massively cheated.

As to how this relates to the Witcher 3, if it's as good as the witcher 2 it's going be best played on a top of the line PC or next best thing a PS4 apparently. I don't care about the 1080p, I'd rather the game have 60fps even if the resolution is 1280x720p@60fps with up-scaling it will look and play better than 1920x1080p@30fps.

I remember waaaaaay back in the day, when Microsoft said that the new xbox 360 would output HD content only.  It happened to be true, and I'm sure that helped fuel the everyday joe to purchase his/her first flat screen HDTV. What happened to MS's tech vision?  Evolution should have the XBone running at 2560x1600 or whatever the right dimensions are, as the xbox 360 was released almost a DECADE ago.  I'm pretty sure I know what happened here.  MS wasn't concerned with making better, up to date products, no.  They were concerned with sucking NSA parts and spying on YOU.  They deserve every bad bit of press that comes out against them.  I used to be on their side until they got so arrogant about their spying that they pretty much blew a shart in the customers face, saying that if they don't like it, to go somewhere else.  smell you loud and clear..I'm going somewhere else.

let's face it. If you rather graphics over gaming and want 1080p forget about consoles and get a pc because $100 graphics card performs better. On the other hand if graphics doesn't matter for you but you like controllers smoothness, keep playing console games.

that's fine because xbox one got the best real time graphics award for a 900p game, RYSE. lol

Both consoles seems like they could have easily made 1080p if they would have just made them a little stronger. I was actually shocked at how far behind modern PC numbers they were (even though I hate PC gaming)

i say screw 1080 i cant tell the diff at 900p and give me juicy 60fps. its all about the fps i dont know where this stupid resolution thing came from.

"First and foremost, dx12 provides a lower level of hardware abstraction than ever before, allowing games to significantly improve multithread scaling and CPU utilization. In addition, games will benefit from reduced GPU overhead via features such as descriptor tables and concise pipeline state objects.

"And that's not all - Direct3D 12 also introduces a set of new rendering pipeline features that will dramatically improve the efficiency of algorithms such as order-independent transparency, collision detection, and geometry culling."

daikkenaurora12

The problem is hardware not software.  Xbox One will always have an issue with achieving 1080p until the hardware changes.

@Wahab_MinSeo  The so called Next-Gen console isn't next gen as it's using the old AMD/ATI's 6000 series graphics chip, it's still DX11 finally though catching up to PC's only after oh, say about 4 years now. As of course consoles are mass produced with old technology they are yet again going to be holding back PC's on the cusp of DX12. Console gamers should enjoy the same level of quality that us PC gamers have always endured. But of course that would never happen with mass produced out dated technology. On that note, I hope you still enjoy the games regardless, whichever platform your playing on.

Last time I checked, Microsoft invested billions into servers, and from a business point, GPU's will be cheaper in a year or two, too where they can cheaply render video and send unmatched quality to the X1's. and in turn down the road it would be cheaper to buy an X1 versus an expensive PC rig that costs 1000+ dollars. The potential for at least 2K is possible. Sony as a company is turning a profit off of consoles? isn't that like throwing money at a car, not very much profit to be made in that category, the rest of sony sold off the tv and laptop business so that keeps them afloat for so long. What I thinked helped sony was the subscriptions, console launches are not going to be making allot of money off the product. Maybe the next smaller version will turn a better profit but the rest is smoke. Sony needs to start thinking about investing in servers or the rug will pulled from under them. I wouldn't want a one man show cause that would drive down competition and prices will rise, let's hope that doesn't happen. And go Team Xbox!

@wm3sv

What $100 GPU performs better than a ps4? I doubt there are any. Anything sub $100, even used, is less powerful. Heck a used HD7950 is about $120 and it's about on par with the ps4, assuming the rest of the PC isn't a bottleneck.

leapmaster
leapmaster

@wm3sv Resolution/framerate are more gameplay related, since they impact how clear the actual picture is and how smooth the game plays (as opposed to fancy shading and mapping features that just give more eye-candy). And why not both? I like the simplicity and optimization of a console, but just because graphics don't make-or-break a game doesn't mean that we should have to decide.

st3ve_pr1tchard

Lol ! Killzone shadow fall runs at 1080p you silly Xbot ! Battlefield 4 runs at 900p on ps4 and so does watchdogs. That's way better than 720p and 740p that most xbox one games run on . With the exception of forza and ryse . Which are complete garbage. I like playing titanfall at 720p on mine better than playing the trash that is ryse or forza.

@kahnseal  That's the only thing that game had going for it.  Bravo MS guys.  the score is now 9 - 1 Sony.

knomicon

@dbene Now why on Earth would you HATE PC gaming?  Your game was made on a PC.  Your console IS a PC.  Since I have to assume you don't game on a PC, why do you choose to HATE it as well?  I don't game on consoles, but I don't hate consoles.  Please tell me something like .."my parent's were killed by a rogue PC, and almost killed me too, but the electric shock intended to kill me, only put me in a coma....where I transformed into CONSOLE MAN!!  Any other reason for hating PC gaming will be discarded as trash.

st3ve_pr1tchard
st3ve_pr1tchard

Ps4 can run 1080p. Developers are dumbing down the graphics on multiplats . So they're on par with one another. Last of us remastered runs at 1080p just fine.

scottwilkins
scottwilkins

@dbene  Amen brother!  Both seem just completely wasted time from both Sony and MS on the hardware from both.  Why did they even bother?  But, that said I could care less about 900 vs 1080.  It all looks good and doesn't take away from the game.  What does matter to me is the richness of the graphics, which both do somewhat well no matter what resolution.  Though both could do much better there too, as they both lag behind PC on this.  Lag by a LOT.

leapmaster
leapmaster

@gunnmetal It depends on how big the screen is and how close you are. I play on a monitor a few feet away, and man, it is night and day for me. Would be nice to be able to reduce the resolution for some extra frames in some games, though.

wm3sv
wm3sv

@gunnmetal I can tell you, the diference starts on 40" tv's if you play 2m away fron it, that way you see the pixels and you notice the pixel filling effect. But if you play 900p, tv's usually overscale images and everything looks blurry which i hate.

Skyte777
Skyte777

It came from a franchise that thought more power equaled better brand. The crazy thing is that most new TVs will upgrade to 100 but you can't tell the difference until you go beyond a 60 inch flat screen tv. Most high end Coms run 1440 and possibly more which still make consoles way behind. I thought games were about "gameplay" though?

wm3sv
wm3sv

@ershellfrank The problem here is that you can't change built in capabillities like pixel shading. You can increase performance but can't fill it at the same speed, which force you use less quallity maps. For me as a gamer, i rather better visuals than big resollutions using low quallity maps. Play Morrowind in a high end pc and you'll find out.

@digigamerx Not same level of quality that use PC gamers, Sure Consoles Still enjoyable but can't get above the PC Games because you can enjoy each game on PC with always 60fps+

Consoles some games get FPS drop and even 30fps lock

Thank you so much for best regard to me and i really appreciated!

have a nice day!

@leapmaster @wm3sv @moesuir  I think the problem is the dev's made such a big song and dance over how great 1080 compared to any other resolution, which puts the common perception that it's not good if it's not 1080. You look at Unchartered 3, great graphics, 720p native res (Yes, it could scale to 1080p, but often looked no better or worse because of scaling issues). There is a difference but unless you're willing to spend several hours rearranging your lounge in order to get the distances right for the size of screen you're using, it's not going to make a noticeable difference.

Framerate is the more important as it determines the smoothness of the game motion.

wm3sv
wm3sv

@leapmaster @wm3sv Believe me, that's why i or us as gamer want, but them as console producers didn't care when that build XONE and PS4. Simply, this generation you can't have both because the more i try to make wolfenstain looks closer to PC, the more i figure out they failed.

leapmaster

@ohara1974 MS just pissed themselves over the RROD debacle and was too scared to make a decently powered system. MS and Sony were handed the exact same GPU/CPU die, MS just opted for a cut-back model for some reason while Sony went big and had it pay off for them.

daikkenaurora12

@ohara1974 But the Kinect was part of the system and could never be removed.  If they would have just focused on the core system, they would have been fine.

@daikkenaurora12 @ohara1974  They should have put more resources into the hardware and not worried about the tv and social aspects of the system so much I think.

@fragtaster it's true that Watch_Dogs has bad optimization but you still can get a Graphics card such of Titan Z or R9 295X2 to run always 60fps+ at 1080p no problem
