Xbox Live turning five

Microsoft to celebrate next week's anniversary of its online gaming service by letting players go toe-to-toe with the creators of a slew of multiplayer hits.

by

November is a big month for Microsoft gaming milestones in North America. The original Xbox launched on November 15, 2001, and went online with the official launch of the Xbox Live service on the system's first anniversary. More recently, the Xbox 360 and its revamped Xbox Live Arcade debuted on November 22, 2005.

With a handful of anniversaries to acknowledge this month, Microsoft is starting by celebrating the fifth anniversary of Xbox Live with the "Xbox Live is 5ive" promotion. To mark the occasion, from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Pacific on November 15, developers from 17 of the newest Xbox Live games will be playing their titles online and available to mix it up against all comers. Members of the Halo Wars development team will also spend time on Halo 3. A schedule of which devs are playing and when is available at Xbox.com.

In addition to the "Game with Fame" sessions, Microsoft is also holding a "Play and Win" contest. Xbox 360 owners who register their gamertags before November 15 and play an online multiplayer game on the anniversary will be entered to win an array of accessories for the system from an HD-DVD player add-on to a 1,600 Microsoft points card.

When it launched five years ago, Xbox Live was available as a $49.95 starter kit that included a year's subscription to the service, a headset, and demo versions of Whacked! and Moto GP. Those two games were part of an original lineup of online-enabled titles including MechAssault, Unreal Championship, NFL Fever 2003, NFL 2K3, NBA 2K3, NHL 2K3, and Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon.

Evinco_DX said "As for people who complain about XBL needing to be free, shut up already. You get what you pay for which is a premium service." That's funny. Premium service. I want to play my games online. One does it great for free, on does it great for $50. Hmmm. Tough call. And as for the post about "any quality games online have a subscription", um no. There's some online roleplaying games that have a subscription. There are literally hundreds of great shooters, rts and roleplaying games that don't require subscriptions. Only a handful of games require additional fees, 'cause you know what - you paid for the game and that's enough for some game companies! It's time to wake up and realize that XBL isn't doing anything that you shouldn't expect from a game. Why should we pay extra for it?

Xbox Live has brought so many good times playing online with my friends. I love what it's done for gaming and can't wait to see what the future holds for it. As for people who complain about XBL needing to be free, shut up already. You get what you pay for which is a premium service and it costs less than many other online gaming services.

Nobody cares of PSN is free, it's an inferior online multiplayer system. XBL is vastly superior in every way. Believe me, I don't mind paying for all the great services I get. There is a reason Xbox live has lasted five years and is only getting bigger and better with every passing month. Besides, if you play any quality game online chances are it has a subscription of some kind.

D6rkFire said "PlayStation Network dropped on the weekend because gamers were downloading the Uncharted demo" Really? I didn't have a single problem with psn this weekend. I was on Sat and Sun doing some co-op on Ghost Recon, playing COD4 and downloading 4 or 5 game and movie trailers to show some friends who were over. I didn't notice anything wrong. "If you bought a 360 then you should be able to afford Xbox Live." It's not a matter of being able to afford it, it's a matter of paying for something that should be free. Online play is now a basic staple of gaming and no one should have to pay extra for it, we should expect it. If I'm given a choice between COD4 on two consoles, both with the exact same excellent mulitplayer, but one I'm going to have to pay an ongoing fee, it's really not too hard a decision to make. Why would I pay for something when I don't have to? For microsoft's pat me on the head good boy achievement points? It makes no sense to me. I've had XBL since the 360 launched but once this last free month is up (I got another free month of xbl with my 3rd faulty console. Woohoo) this is one expense I can't justify to myself anymore. Not taking anything away from those who enjoy it. I'll miss Halo online but I'll get over it with Warhawk and COD4.

i just had my 3 year anniversary with xbl in september...and though i cant play it very much anymore (my roommate dropped out of college and took the tv with him and i havent gotten a new one yet) i absolutely love it. i used to think playing online was the best part but now im starting to think thats tied with the downloadable demos which i play almost as much as my actual games so much that i dont have to buy a lot of games i might have otherwise like skate. anyone hating on M$ for having to pay for xbl must not appreciate how much everything they do costs. i love you M$ and your xbl

PlayStation Network dropped on the weekend because gamers were downloading the Uncharted demo. A whole weekend, maybe 1 million gamers were downloading the dempo. Xbox Live never dropped for me when Halo 3 was launched and there was 10 times more people on Live. If people are complaining about the price then the quality of Xbox Live wouldn't be as good. It's not even expensive. If you bought a 360 then you should be able to afford Xbox Live.

XBOX Live has given many so many games a much longer shelf life than ever before. I truly look foward to seeing what the future of XBOX Live has in store for games & gamers alike. Happy Birthday XBOX Live!!

I was lucky enough to be in the "test-drive" program so I played from the September before it went "live" in November - ever since then its been fantastic. PC still has the best online because of dedicated servers. But for just over 10pence a day XBL is one of the best bargains out there. Happy Birthday :)

I remember searching a whole afternoon to get my XBL starter kit the first day it came out and I love XBL to this day. Even more so since the incredible 360 upgrade... Happy anniversary Xbox Live!

i just read a few of the posts from moaners, couple of sony fan boys thrown for good measure I`m sure. First of all, COD 4 has no problems online, been playing this every day since launch, its an awesome online game, want to moan at poor online, have a go at konami for PES 08. And the people moaning at the cost per month, xbl is by far the most superior online gaming service on any platform, and its well worth

I just got XBL last month, and I've got to say that it is a great service. Although it could do without the fee, it's still completely worth the $60 a year. There is only one improvement I'd like to see: Video Marketplace worldwide. I live in Canada and I want it, but I can't. I also can't register for the sweepstakes as I do not live in Canada. I literally can't imagine my daily life without Live.

Xbox Live, bar none, is the best feature of the Xbox- we really need to see other systems like it implemented on the other systems. Considering how well it was done and the resulting success reflecting the quality, I don't see why other platforms cannot take the initiative to bring online play at this level.

I've been on live since July 2003 I believe. I rember playing Return to Castle Wolfenstein on the original Xbox. Haha, it was soo amazing. Now with 360 I can't imagine not ever being on live. Live is the def. selling point of the XBOX 360! Always have loved it. Happy Anniversary Xbox Live TEAM

XBox Live is just great. I work at Wal-Mart in the electronics department. And everytime I sell a 360, I recommend XBox Live. 360 conquers all and Live is one of its main weapons against the Wii and PS3.

Xbox Live is truly amazing. There's nothing better than chatting with your friend's while playing Halo 3 and stuff like that. It's very userfriendly too.I could download a movie and then watch it while downloading demos. What makes Xbox Live so great, though, are all the little nicks and nacks Microsoft added for Ooomph in its online service. I really can't name any bad experience I had with Xbox Live as a service. It think, though, that TiVo and a "half-gaming half-TV" split screen option would be real nice.Maybe something like PS3's soon-to-be Home chatting service too. Then Xbox Live would be perfect, but it almost already is.

Great service and a general ripoff of everyone who has ever gamed. I am only talking about the microtransactions though, the online play is great and so are the FULL featured arcade games, as for online add-ons for other games already on the market, it is a bloodsucking, parasitic service.

i love xbox live , and it the best online gaming service ever , but not yet perfect , the only thing it lacks the dedicated servers , i know theres already games who uses dedicated servers but how many? thats the problem , if they just add more servers around the world instead of one server in the USA that will be very freaking cool . and yeah everybody who says xbl is expensive then you didnt play it yet, and no body is forcing you to pay. anyway congarts M$ and may xbox live improve to the best.

Congrats MS, I've been a subscriber since day one as well and it's been great! I can't believe how much money I've spent on XBLA games let alone the Marketplace Video on demand feature that no one 'me included lol' thought would workout. Now I can't imagine X-box live without it.
