Microsoft has revealed that Xbox Live Gold subscribers will now get two free games a month, similar to Sony's PlayStation Plus offer.

Xbox Live Gold's free monthly games will start immediately. The first two games will be Halo 3 and Assassin's Creed 2.

I don't really get this.  Do you get to keep the game forever?  Or you don't get to keep it any longer if you are not a Gold member.  In PSN+, you get to keep the game as long as you are a PSN+ member, if you are not the games becomes a demo?  Can someone shed some light into this?

Too bad they choose the games.

Two free games for $5 a month sounds good to me.

Well I've never played Fable 3 (only 1-2 or Assassin's Creed 2 (only the first) and my copy of Halo 3 got stolen and pawned so most of these are "new" to me anyways. And even if these games are cheap now this still saves me the money in gas that actually going to the game store to get these would cost me. I wanna know what the next batch of free games will be. I missed out on a lot of the more popular titles over the years.

Will this work on pre-paid cards/memberships... or are they wanting your credit card to auto-renew?

How come when I go to download the games it still says that Assassin's Creed 2 is 19.99 and Halo I haven't checked yet? I am extremely confused, please clarify.

Tried to download Fable 3 "This Item is not available from your current location."

Damn it Microsoft. Damn region locks.

Who cares "who shot first" it's free stuff. download it and stop complaining. Look none of your old discs will play on the Xbox One so if you download these FREE!!!!! games you will be able to play some of your old favorites on the new system. If you haven't noticed these are all top seller games for the Xbox system. Fable 3, Halo 3, and AC 2 are still games i play from time to time myself. Me myself, I am downloading these titles and selling/trading the disc version to help pay for the new systems and games. I know it is only a few bucks here and there but it's better than nothing.

I own both the PS3 with PS+ as well as the XBOX 360 with a Gold membership, both from day 1. I have far more enjoyed the Playstation than the Xbox. People say, "Oh the Playstation had hacking issues this and account issues that." Remember, so did the Xbox...Now that SONY has handed Microsoft their asses in the console race, Microsoft is trying to keep us on their side by offering free games which ps+ has already done (and their games have been pretty solid) whereas Microsoft is throwing us some older games which some of us have already played a while back. Don't let this fool you, Microsoft is becoming more and more evil, and they've lost at least one customer.

I don't get how to play them once you download, it's not showing up under My Games

I can see them releasing xbox exclusives up until xboxone launch so then if your on the fence you will want to stick with xbox because of these games you recently enjoyed.

Well its about time that Microsoft did a little catching up! Dont get me wrong im a fan of all the games consoles and own most of them but i was a little disappointed when (after being a member of PS Plus) i joined Xbox Live Gold and there were no freebies, just the ability to do things i can do on my Playstation for free?? Microsoft seem to take one step forward though and then 1,000,000,000 steps back after the reveal of the Xbox One....i mean seriously...no used games? loggin in ever 24 hours?? Seriously! At least Sony came to the floor at E3 and basically one upped them :P

its a bit different to how sony does it.   you dont lose the games if you dont subscribe. you can download whats available during your gold subscription but if you go back to free memebership you still keep what you downloaded

And since Microsoft thinks that Europe is a single country, I get my downloads blocked because I live in Germany and mi account is Spanish.

Way to got MS, you become more idiot after each passing day...

at least now you can say the price of xbl gold is worth it (£40) and Assassin's Creed 2 is a great game, the best in the series you could say and even though i have it on PS3 i will be downloading this, it'll give me another excuse to replay it :)

Well I never played Assassin's creed 2, and my Fable 3 disc broke a month ago.  So, I'm very happy about this.

What if some of us already has those two games, can we choose from an ever growing list of games and each month pick the two we want? If not then Micro$haft isn't actually giving me anything new and I won't be getting any additional value for my $60 Gold subscription.

Fable 3 is available now/ I would get it if someone didnt play it on my profile years ago and got half the acheivements

@master_gamer23 You go to the game that free for the month and click download. If you have a hard drive that can accommodate the game, it should download.

@Psyko_Tim I just downloaded Fable 3 for free with a prepaid card subscription.  The offer is to all Gold members, not just those who auto renew.

@Jakel12 Check Major Nelson's Blog or keep checking the dashboard every month on Xbox.

@Aethersprite Because, one game comes out at the beginning of the month. The second game becomes free either on the 15th or 16th of each month.

I had the same question you did and was told that thoese two games don't start for free till July.

@djblazeapound Correction you still cannot play these games on the new system (Xbone) because the xbox 360 has completely different hardware and thus is incompatible with Xbone.

@bosox204 Information was never stolen when Microsoft was hacked and working with the FBI they nailed the ones responsible within the month. Also, Xbox Live has never been down for more than a few hours on Xbox 360 (after which I always got more free Xbox Gold time or MS points) while PSN was down for MONTHS. That's quite a big difference you're overlooking.

Also, the attraction of Plus is its 'free' games, whereas you've always paid for Live for a far superior online experience. The most I've ever waited on a patch or update was literally 20 seconds on Xbox and that was a very slow one. Most are 5 seconds. PlayStation made the habit of having 20-40 minute updates. Just to name one of many distinctions that made Live far superior and well worth the money.

Also, you seem to forget those 'free' games aren't free. It's a subscription to get games, except you don't know which games you get. If you want all those games it's a great, great deal. Obviously. However, if you're not that interested in half of them, you're better off picking up the games you want yourself. That way, they are yours instead of having to keep renew your Plus subscription, because all that stuff is gone once you don't renew it.

I'm not saying you are wrong for liking Plus better than Live; I'm just saying you sure left a lot of crucial details out of your argument that kind off twists the reality of things.

As for me, I don't think I'll ever care for free games that tie into subscriptions. If I want to play them, I usually already own them. There are more awesome games out there then I have time to play, so I'm not the kind off guy who goes: 'Well, I wouldn't have bought this but since it's free, I'll take it'.

I'm always more interested in a robust online experience. In fact, I'm a little concerned by how Sony is going to charge for online play. It makes sense, their GaiKai acquisition means they need to fork up that money somewhere, but if it doesn't work as well as Xbox Live even does now I'm going to feel ripped off.

For me, I think Live will once again be the better service. MS always excelled at that part.

@Butt_Chunx Im sure PS model is the same. I doubt that Sony and MS will allow users to have access to any two free games a month. Because they would simply just get the two newest titles and that would destroy sales.
