Xbox Live Gold subscribers get free Assassin's Creed II later this month

Major Nelson confirms that Assassin's Creed II will be offered for free to Xbox Live Gold subscribers in the second half of July.

Assassin's Creed II will be the next free game offered as part of Microsoft's Games With Gold promotion, Microsoft spokesperson Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb has confirmed.

Xbox Live Gold subscribers will be able to download the game from July 16 until the end of the month.

Microsoft earlier this week announced that XBLA tower-defence game Defense Grid: The Awakening would be the free game available between July 1 through July 15.

Microsoft announced the Games With Gold promotion during its E3 2013 press conference, and has pledged to run the promotion from July until the launch of the Xbox One in November. A new game will be offered to Gold subscribers on the 1st and 16th of each month.

Halo 3 will be included in the promotion in the coming months.

The service is a rival to Sony's PlayStation Plus, which is currently offering its subscribers the following games in Europe: Uncharted 3, XCOM: Enemy Unknown, Little Big Planet Karting, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, ICO and Shadow of the Colossus Classics HD, Demon's Souls, Catherine, Malicious, Lord of the Rings: War in the North, and The Cave.

It would be cool if MS started to offer a deal similar to PS plus, it might sway my choice in which next-gen console I want.  Alas, getting 4 year old games/bad games for a higher price just can't compare to what PS+ offers.

It is practically set in stone that PS+ does offer you better, and newer games at a much cheaper price. I bought a 90 Day subscription to test PS+ for £12 ($18) and have already downloaded: Call of Juarez, Battlefield 3, Saints Row 3, PayDay, Uncharted 3, XCOM, Rayman Origins and Unit 13. They were ALL free games and well worth the £12 I payed. And what? You got Assassins Creed 2, a game that came out almost 4 years ago and you're jumping for joy? Get real.

why is this even news? sony's been giving out free games on ps+ for ages now.

I can't even be a$$ed to go onto the store and download it.... I played through this aaaaggggeeeeesssss ago, not going to fill up my 360's drive with this tat!

Seriously though, how can a company that was doing so well with the 360, get everything so wrong this time round? It all started with the now famous 'deal with it' quote from Adam Orth and things have steadily gone downhill ever since!

It's obvious that PS+ is a far better deal if games are what you are interested in compared to the dross that has been announced for Live. The Xbox1 has had a few about turns lately in terms of features and restrictions but it is still a box with less capable hardware and forces you to have Kinnect.

I bought Kinnect for my 360, used it maybe twice, realised how sh*te it was and have never used it since. I don't want to wave my arms about and jump around when playing games, I want to sit comfortably on my sofa and concentrate. I don't want to use Kinnect for chat, in the rare occasions I do chat in game I will use a headset as it will usually be late and I wouldn't want to wake anyone up in my house with me having to yell over the sound from the TV!

And it's a bit creepy, sitting there always watching, always listening, just waiting for an opportunity to hit me with an advert tailored at who is in the room!!!

No thanks, PS4 for me!

I love my 360 but really? AC2? Gimme a break Microsoft, who hasn't played this by now?

Meanwhile in PS+ camp we got for this month alone... Ah, yes little known Battlefield 3, Saint Row the Third and PayDay the Heist. Try harder M$ lol

Good but not good enough, comparing to what PSN+ is offering...

Sure, release a game that everybody and their Grandma already has for free.  AC2?  Halo 3?  COME ON MICROSOFT, try a little harder.

Great! the only thing is that i can not download those free games from serbia... : /

This is why we can't have nice things.  Even when a company literally gives something away people will still complain incessantly about it.  Gamer culture has become self-defeating.

Sweet, a game I can buy for peanuts I can get for "free".

certainly not bad but you have to wait

Yeah, great. Because anyone who was ever remotely interested in AC doesn't already own this game and hasn't already played it to death. Well done.

Oh wow!  I'm going to sign up for "Gold" right now.  Oh, wait, I already played this game FOUR YEARS ago.  I have yet to finish Halo 3, and at this point I think it's safe to say I never will.  Anyways, what fan of Halo is even playing 3 now.  Hasn't there been at least two more Halo games since 3?

@CrashWaffle Too true.  It's actually a little sad the type of deals you can get on PS Plus compared to XBL.  However I wonder if Sony will continue that strategy.  A big part of the reason for the deals was trying to convince people to sign up for a service they didn't really need when it came to online gaming on PS3.  Now that PSPlus is required will they still offer the cool discounts and free games?

@retsmot Let set other benefits aside and compare only free games with membership:

PS Plus lets us play many newer games as long as you pay for membership while

Xbox Live Gold let you have 2 free older games playable with or without the membership (It seems like all the worthwhile playing games will come out on the second half of each month though).

I personally like free to keep model more.

JoeGamer1234
JoeGamer1234

@jasonlc3221 Of course we're going to bitch about it because they're giving away games that most people already own or have previously owned and either sold, traded off, etc. Then there's SONY who is doing better as someone else mentioned. It's a slap in the face really when you think about it. "Here's a bunch of old ass games you've no interest in!"

pound-u
pound-u

@jasonlc3221 Oh, shut the hell up. Microsoft can easily do better than give away old games, especially when the competition is doing a much better job at it.

blabr70

@NeOmeGamer You don't "get them" persay, you only have access to them. We actually get to keep these games.

@JangoF-76 Wrong, I missed it at the time it came out and never ended up getting it. Looking forward to playing what many people tell me is the best of all the AC games for free.

@jark888 @retsmot you must have xbox live gold you can not get games like assassins creed 2 or defense grid without have a gold subscription at the time of the download so no it only applys to those with xbox live gold

bgna8980
bgna8980

@jark888 @retsmot Plus is like an annual lease, that aside, plus also offers great discounts. Anything purchased when those discounts were applied are also free to keep.

NeOmeGamer

@blabr70 Nobody says I will stop being subscriber to PS+ anytime soon. As long as PlayStation thrives, as long I will be member, persay - I will keep it forever and BEYOND! xD

NeOmeGamer

@armyown @NeOmeGamer True that my friend, not to mention we'll get DriveClub day 1 for signing to PS+ on PS4. That basically pays for the subscribtion itself.

hadlee73

@Ian-Cognito @Oldgun Not really a problem when the yearly subscription fee costs less than a single new release title (so keeping the sub going is not a problem), and considering Sony have a rule only to give free games that have a MetaCritic rating of 70 or above, the free games they give away each month are not too shabby at all. Saying that, I do think Assassin's Creed II is a good game for MS to give away free as its the best in the series.

Oldgun
Oldgun

@Ian-Cognito @Oldgun Yes I'll be more than happy. Good luck paying 60 bucks for that Ad filled Gold membership.

bgna8980
bgna8980

@jark888 @bgna8980 @retsmot I understand where you're coming from. I agree with PS Plus if you do not renew your membership your games won't work. PS Plus is mandatory now on ps4 though. Also they should really allow non-gold members to access apps like Netflix and Hulu. It really is bothersome.

jark888
jark888

@bgna8980 @jark888 @retsmot Of course, PS plus offer great saving and solution for many people. When I said I prefer free-to-keep model more, as a game collector, I meant I don't like restrictions on when and how long can I play certain games. PS plus model is basically a kind of rental form. They get to advertise games while we play it, but we never have full ownership on them until we finally buy(just like cable TV service). What I like about PS plus is environmental friendly aspect: we never have to buy some unknown shitty games. What I don't like on both models is that we hardly get the complete version of games with all of the add-on.

bgna8980
bgna8980

@jark888 @bgna8980 @retsmot Okay first off yearly ps plus is $10 cheaper. Secondly suppose you had a friend who said you can borrow this new game for a year or keep this old game, which you've probably already own, played and have no use for it. Which would you prefer? Let's say there was a new game that was released but since you are short on fund was unsure about buying it, then later it appears on ps plus free of charge. You can now play the game without paying any additional money. Now tell me which would you prefer?

@armyownCalm down kid... you did nothing and proved nothing except your own inability to debate a point, resorting to childish insults from the outset.

Good luck getting through the rest of your life with an attitude like that... and no, I don't want fries with my meal.

@Ian-Cognito @armyown Bored I guess right? Nothing else to do huh? Yeah that was me too a few months ago. That's why I moved on from the 360. It's hard to admit to yourself when the time is right. Might be that time right now. You need to find something else to occupy your time. This is just embarrassing.
