Xbox Live Gold is free this weekend in the UK

All Xbox Live accounts get Gold features from May 3 to May 5.

by

Xbox Live Gold will be free this weekend in the UK, Microsoft has announced.

The promotional period will run from 12:00 on Friday, May 3 to 23:59 on Sunday, May 5, allowing free Xbox Live account owners to access online multiplayer and the service's other premium features.

Double XP weekends will also be running on the multiplayer modes of Gears of War: Judgment, Assassin's Creed III, and Far Cry 3.

Apps like Netflix and Lovefilm will also be enabled for non-paying Xbox Live customers; these subscription services are normally available to Gold account holders only.

In January, Microsoft announced that it was investing more into advertising on Xbox Live.

A recent rumour also suggested that Microsoft was looking into creating its own original programming for Xbox, including a revival of the sci-fi drama Heroes.

Greedy pricks... 2 fking days... yay enjoy that netflix (something you already pay for) and Xbox cant even stream 1080p... what a lame post....

Meanwhile my PS3 Streams Netflix in full 1080p and has Dolby 5.1 audio. And its free. And yes PS also offer PS Plus subscription with faster download speeds and free games, But at least I have the option to choose, as im not Forced to pay...

Maybe this Nextbox wont have a tremendous failurr rate like the 360...

LOL at the people still arguing over PS3vs.360. I will always prefer the PS3 because of it's large list of exclusives. That's not to say the 360 is bad, it's not at all. If there were no  such thing as Playstation I would be very happy with a 360. As for the online, I don't use it very much so it doesn't bother me if the setup and whatnot is not as good as the 360's. I don't go for the social aspects, but it would be nice to get some friends to play with(especially since I just got Injustice Gods Among Us, and it's damn good).

My PS3 and new gaming PC will also have free online this weekend...and next weekend, and the weekend after that and so on.

As an owner of both an Xbox360 and PS3, its clear that the Xbox live gold is a much better service. I have a lot of server and connection problems with PSN. Also the presentation, service, and interface is much better on Xbox live.

I dont mind paying for better quality, but i do personally think its over priced. The cost of the 3 month membership, if it was for the whole year, then i think it would be reasonable.

Evidently PSN, PC, and Nintendo's online will also be free this weekend!

Useless. The ones who own an Xbox 360 and care about Live Gold have it already, so this will pretty much only affect the casual offline gamers who won't even care about this weekend only "upgrade"

Why would you pay to play online when it's on any other platform

It should ALWAYS be free.

Finally 360 owners get to experience what PS3 and Wii U owners do on a daily basis without paying a fee lol

I'm amazed a service like Netflix is still Gold only.

Should be free all the time.  Most of the content is available for free (with subscriptions) through other sources.  I'm not sure what the value proposition is anymore for Live!.  It's basically double charing and a money grab.  There was value in the integrated voip 8 years ago.  Much less so now.

Seriously are people still actually paying for this? Surely if u pay money for your live service you should get a discount on DLC.

What's really sad is there will be Xbox users that will take advantage of this that do not have Live Gold. Do I feel sorry for them? No, it was their choice.

You pay for xbox live gold and you get party chat and the ability to play games that came out in 2005. You don't pay for standard playstation network and they cancel metal gear online after 4 years and the network gets hacked for a month. I know which service I prefer...

@suprastaruk I have not had any real connection problems and with my $60 a year i have actually received nearly 2 dozen completely free games. what do you get for your subscription?

HowlPendragon

@daabulls23 Exactly, maybe, just maybe, I can buy their bullshit about having "more secure and reliable" servers hence the price, but when its required to use your paid video streaming service it becomes pretty apparent what the real reason behind it is.

@PinkSpider79 Quite often you do get discounts. There's a section for Gold exclusives discounts somewhere on there. And I do pay for it because for the year I pay £35 which is sod all money and we use pretty much all of the features of Gold each day. Can't say I have any reason to complain about it, always up, always quick but I'm starting to sound like an advert now so I'll stop, hopefully answered both your questions (even if one was, I suspect, rhetorical).

@AsianSalvation Last weekend was free gold for user i live in Canada figured it was the same in the US. Which i'm wondering how this news worthy?? MS does this every once in awhile.

@TheSkyrimStatue Party chat ooooohhhh!!!

BTW its the game companies that decide when the games get shut down not Sony.

canuckbiker

Serves have nothing to do with the console and everything to do with the games manufacturer. Konami owns those servers and chose to shut them down when they stopped being used. I refuse to give Microsoft anymore money for something that every other entertainment company offers free. By the way Microsoft gets hacked all the time and does nothing to compensate those that lose their information, at least Sony owned up to it and made good to those affected despite costing them a lot of profits.

HowlPendragon
HowlPendragon

@TheSkyrimStatue FYI it was actually 2 and a half months.

And the only reason you probably don't know about the Xbox hackings are because Microsoft always denies them when they do happen.

Just Google it, cba to paste a link xP

HowlPendragon
HowlPendragon

@HitmanSquirrel @franizarduy Yep, the same way Xbox users have had theirs stolen time and again.

At least Sony has the balls to admit when they've failed to secure our information. What does Microsoft do when its "superior" servers ar breached? Deny, deny, deny. Oh, and make sure you don't compensate your paying customers either, cause it wasn't their fault you lost your info on their service.

Gamer_4_Fun
Gamer_4_Fun

@HowlPendragon LOL trust me, if hackers want to, they can EASILY hack XBL. Hell 360 has a console has been hacked in the first year and where I live, you find pirated games for 360 more easily than genuine games.

PinkSpider79
PinkSpider79

I completely agree, I wonder if the Kinectbox720 live fees when the console is released will be the same or more . I also wonder if they will still charge you to change your user name, that's the biggest croc of shit ever.

thebeachguy90
thebeachguy90

@saugh He's right. The hacking on Xbox is probably worse than on PS3. Just because the network itself MAY not have gotten hacked doesn't mean hacking doesn't occur. The reports of account hacking are endless and no they're not all from people giving out their info. That's what MS wants you to believe. Don't be a blind sheep like millions out there and believe everything they tell you. M$ is notorious for sweeping things under the rug, they will do anything to cover their asses especially with them running a paid service.  XBL isn't secure by any means.

Funny because there was never any evidence that CC info was breached.  It was under a different encryption the hackers didn't get to, even credit card companies came out and said there was never any signs of fraud activity. And no 70 million accounts doesn't equal 70 million active users. You clearly don't know what you're talking about.

saugh
saugh

@HowlPendragon Lets be realistic here -  stolen Xbox accounts are in thousands and predominantly phishing caught out the user - not much many companies can do anything about. Often the customer got a refund even if it was entirely their fault.

Sony however lost credit card details of all 70+ million users. There is no pride to be taken in admitting 70,000,000+ card details had been stolen and does not deserve any credit. It was reported across the entire media before Sony admitted it. "At least Sony had the balls" doesn't deserve any merit whatsoever. This theft included even the most secure Sony customers. Through no fault of their own, their own personal details were stolen.

Sony compensated customers out of sheer humiliation and to preserve (any remaining) public image. not out of goodwill. This hack will go on record as one of the biggest ever recorded, an achievement (or trophy) Sony no doubt does not want to be associated with.

What could have prevented this hack? Up to date systems... So yes, you could say Microsoft has "Superior" servers.

Sony's failure is far greater than anything by Microsoft.
