Xbox Live Fall dashboard preview taking applications

Microsoft puts out open call to enlist testers of user-interface update to Xbox 360's online hub, due later this year.

by

Microsoft first unveiled the Xbox 360's new Metro-inspired dashboard during the Electronic Entertainment Expo earlier this year. Development on the update is now coming to a close, and in typical prerelease fashion, the console maker is accepting applications for its public preview program.

An early look at the new Xbox Live dashboard.

A few key features are pinpointed in the call for applicants, including a newly designed dashboard that caters to controller and Kinect navigation, the new beacon system to facilitate finding friends for gameplay sessions, deeper Facebook integration, and cloud storage for game saves. Microsoft also noted that various features from entertainment partners may also be added during the preview period.

Also noted for previous participants in Xbox preview programs, Microsoft has a new automated method behind registering consoles into the preview that doesn't require manual input of console information.

Applications can be submitted at Microsoft's site, and more information is available at the Xbox Live update program portal.

Xbox dashboard changes like twice maybe three times a year and I don't think PSN has ever changed their look.

@Pr0ving4Gr0undz you want to brick your system? make sure you unplug your system or unplug your ethernet cable during the update. brick it for sure. i signed up for the betas starting with the NXE, never had a problem.

@pr0ving4gr0undz I'd rather try it and get a free Slim upgrade for the brick then wait til the actual release. lol

Im all for change and quite looking forward to a 'refresh', ultimately as long as its slick and easy to navigate, its all good : )

I am really looking forward to the new dashboard. It's going to be so much less of a pain to navigate. I don't even bother scrolling through the ridiculous Rolodex-like system we have now, I just get straight into the games if nothing immediately available catches my eye.

@brothersinarmsb Lol i don't think the lady gaga thing will be permanent but other than that i think this layout looks pretty cool, and so does the current layout.

i love all of the new updates (The NXE was something to get used to though), but i think eventually humans, they will bring the blades from the first dashboard somehow. for now, i understand why they are doing this: they want to make it easier and more accessible and amazingly similar to windows 7 and soon to be 8. but remember, the newest dashboards looked like ZUNE.

Oooook....and the focus here Microsoft is Lady Gaga's bad breath of dead or development of the new improved skinny jeans by the New Boyz, or How Far can the Far East Movement plan on moving back father east? Either way my opinion is that its just a new look with a dumb concept....Give us a break Microsoft everything doesnt have to be futur-ristic!

I can't believe people are complaining about paying for avatar items. You don't have to buy them. How would you like it if you worked on something like that and someone told you that you had to give it away for free. New dashboard is gonna be nice though. Hopefully they add more access for media from droid phones

I hope it's good. I like the current dashboard, so I hope the changes are too drastic.

Do you need gold to sign up?

I hope that they get rid of the "avatar" baloney, if not, then update the clothes so we can change them, without having to PAY to do so. We did not ask for this, as it only serves M$ to fill their overfilled cofers for useless and wasteful spending of our hard earned cash. "Ideas" like this are making me consider better options for the new generation of consoles that is upcoming.

I did the last dashboard beta and we gave MS alot of bug fixes and suggestions to incorporate on the private forums. It was cool to be part of something that actually makes it into a product that millions use.

"Pre-Release Software. You acknowledge that due to the unique nature of pre-release software update programs, there is a risk that this software update may impair your console’s functionality or even render it inoperable. Consoles registered with the Preview program are the only consoles that will be allowed into the Preview program." So, if my console gets bricked, I don't see a refund or replacement mentioned. No, for me.

I have a fantastic idea: release it instead of putting it in some sort of weird beta. It's a dashboard. Most people don't spend too much time on it.
