Xbox 720 launching in November at $500 - Report

Windows blogger Paul Thurrott claims Microsoft's next-gen platform will launch during same window as PlayStation 4; subsidized model available for $300.

Noted Windows blogger Paul Thurrott has details on Microsoft's recently confirmed next-generation Xbox. In an update to his website today, Thurrott claimed the platform will launch in November at $500.

This release window would put the Xbox 720 up against the PlayStation 4, also believed to release during November.

A $300 Xbox 720 will also be available, Thurrott said, though this model will require consumers commit to two years of Xbox Live gold at an expected price of $10 month. If this pricing is accurate, gamers would end up spending $540 overall.

Thurrott said Microsoft's May 21 Xbox 720 reveal event will be the first of multiple announcements for the platform. A second event will follow ahead of the 2013 Electronic Entertainment Expo in June, where the platform's full launch lineup will be revealed, he said.

Crytek's Kinect game Ryse and a new Forza title, among others, are reportedly part of the Xbox 720's launch lineup.

A third, developer-centric event will take place during the Build conference in San Francisco in late June, Thurrott said.

Concerning the Xbox 720's architecture and specifications, Thurrott understands that the platform is based on the core version of Windows 8. "This suggests a common apps platform or at least one that is similar to that used by Windows 8," he said.

Thurrott also said the Xbox 720 will contain a Blu-ray optical drive and reiterated that the system will require an Internet connection to function. This feature "isn't as Draconian as many seem to believe," he said.

Lastly, the blogger again mentioned that Microsoft will release a third generation Xbox 360 console in 2013 that will be "significantly less expensive" than current models. This console is codenamed Stingray, he said.

Currently, the Xbox 360 starts at $200 for a 4GB unit and scales to $300 for a 250GB bundle.

Thurrott is a noted Microsoft insider and runs Paul Thurrott's Supersite for Windows.

A Microsoft spokesperson told GameSpot, "We're excited to share more about the new generation of games, TV, and entertainment on May 21, but have nothing further to share at this time."

So this is set in stone? This always online rubbish? Without an Internet Connection my system won't FUNCTION.

If I lose connection for any reason, mainly due to the fact that I live in a geographic location that hasn't a top notch ISP and is quite shoddy and overpriced by the common standard, then I'm boned and my system will stop letting me play whatever game I bought to play on it.

I'll buy it on launch day because I've the means to do it and give it an honest to goodness trial run until the New Year, if I'm hampered by my connection and the restrictions from not having this thing online all the time to function as mentioned I'm selling it and sticking with my Ps4 (Of which I'll buy on launch as well) and take my next gen business over to Sony exclusively.

Only thing that interests me is the small cheap 360. Maybe the soldering will finally be up to code, and it'll be worth spending a bit to posthumously play Lost Odyssey and Magna Carta 2.

if this always online is true (which would be just plain retarded) then it's just a simple yes and no answer definatly sony and I have over a 71,000 achievement score but I would say bye to it so fast if this is true. besides I think sony has better singleplayer exclusives anyway. And COD is completely irrelevent at this point which I absolutely hate that franchise and gears is starting to lose it's luster so all the have is Halo which is a good series but it's just not enough for all of sony's exclusives. we'll wait and see though for may 21'st but if it's true they just commited marketing suicide.

To be required to have an internet connect.... Automatic pass, M$ struck out thinking all of its customers will have internet, some of us are always moving, or in situations where i wont have internet

PS4 it is then

Oh and btw, this is as Draconian as it gets Paul Thurrott

If I seriously have to be always online for this console, I'll pass, hello PS4

If MS wisely dropped this idea then I'll buy 720

Foolish, you just about convinced me to jump boat this coming generation Microsoft.

Best pull a rabbit out of your ass if you intend to compete with built in streaming and probably nothing as stupid as "must be online", real foolish.

"Not as draconian"?

Then how draconian? Just a little bit, or a moderate amount?

They'll reverse this decision when the console's been out for a while, I imagine.

So, in Europe 500€ and needed to be always online?. Seems that the New Generation war of Video Games Platforms it's ended before the start.

Always online may not sound great - but i always sign into live whether i'm mp online gaming or not - so doesnt bother me.

TBH if it stops all the pirate trash 'non-real-gamers' from ruining the industry then i'm all for it :-)

Always online? O.K. I know what console I'm not buying.

I just posted in the Witcher 3 news comments about the always online thing, to my understanding The Witcher 3 will not feature "always online" so that brings 2 possible outcomes for the next xbox:

1. The Witcher 3 is not on the the Next Xbox

2. The next Xbox is not "always online"

if its always online i will not purchase, but honestly i think the witcher 3 news kinda kills this rumor does it not?

Look...we bitch about the stupidity of Microsoft requiring a constant internet connection to use their new system.  It's definitely something worth bitching about, don't get me wrong, but the amount of people who see the bullshit in that design won't be enough to make a dent in Xbox 720 sales if all of us boycott the system.  I do hope the system suffers from extremely poor sales and that when Microsoft does industry research on why their system sucks they will see that it's the required internet connection and release a different version of the system that won't require it, which is why I'm going to wait a long while after the release of the next gen systems before I pull the trigger on either - IF I pull the trigger too!

This concept is similar to MOST people who bitch about the price of gas, yet have not changed their driving habits at all.

The $300 SKU will end up costing the consumer $540 in the end, because of the two year Live gold commitment.

But it's not like those who buy the $500 SKU will get free Live gold subscriptions. And if you need a gold account to play online, then the $500 model will end up costing many more.

bfmv2007

From my understanding, xbox 720 must be connected to the internet to function, but DRM is left up to the developers. What does this mean? DRM for all EA games, and Call of Dutys lol. Either way it all sucks if its true. Imagine gamestop having an announcement saying they no longer accept games made by EA because their all DRM, but you can trade them in on ps4. Im saying EA because lets face it, EA is getting to be just as greedy as Micro$oft. Microsoft no longer cares about games, all they care about is money, and pointless apps. Im just waiting for EA to announce that you have to have a $20 season pass to even load their games. Real core gamers know the ps4 is the way to go next gen.

This will not just boost up PS4 sales but also Wii U sales. Poor Microsoft. They seem to be clueless with what they are doing forcing people to be online and buy gold membership. They haven't learnt a lesson from the disaster called Windows 8.

Dictatorship will not work with us gamers.

@ digi-demon - Do you work for Microsoft? Cause if someone from Microsoft is reading these comments they must be so pissed off that they probably feel the need to have at least one comment in support of the always online requirement.

lewibaygo

@KhanhAgE Your right it will coast more but the difference being that SKU your locked in for two years, with god know what T and C's. By that time MS will have reversed there stance on DRM leaving it up to publishers to make the decision and will be forcing feeding it to you. You wont have a choice to sell up and walk away

"espviper301" got the right idea wait a year then pull the trigger plus all those launch releases with there first day DLC and follow up's will be able to be got for the original price of the game

What's bad about PSN? You get free MP unlike XBLive and so many free full games for both PS3 and PSVita. I have never bothered to get an XBLive gold membership but I am a PSN member. I get much more than what I pay for my membership as I get so many free games worth much more than the cost of membership.

The cut throats at MS charge us even for playing MP leave alone not giving us free games.

pwc2

@Eraldus @digi-demon @NicholasT33 Even though the PS3 had issues, I'm sure Sony learned from their mistakes, and that's good. BTW XBOX had a major issue as well. RROD!
