Xbox 720 for holiday 2013 - Report

Sources say Microsoft will release next Xbox in time for next year's holiday season, but hasn't decided when to announce it.

by

Sources reportedly with knowledge of the matter have told Bloomberg that Microsoft will release its Xbox 720 in time for the holiday 2013 shopping season. This is far from the first time such a release window has been predicted, but Bloomberg has a track record of accuracy.

Additionally, the sources said Microsoft has not yet decided when to announce its Xbox 360 successor. The company is reportedly mulling an announcement at an industry event like the Electronic Entertainment Expo or a separate event where the new machine would have all of the spotlight.

A Microsoft representative was not immediately available to comment.

Microsoft's next Xbox may not be just one device, but rather a two-SKU platform. A report from last week suggested Microsoft, in addition to a full-fledged Xbox 720, is also planning an Xbox-branded set-top device. This device will reportedly be a "low-cost" alternative to the full machine and will play casual games.

I'm still in awe at some graphics I see on 360 right now, it's truly unbelievable how far games have come in all aspects. I'm surprised in a way that games can get better, especially graphically. Maybe a heavy turn towards 3D, virtual reality, controller-free, or tablet controller gaming is in store I'm not too sure. I hope there's a controller though I'm too old school. I mean it's been talked about 720 coming out for a while now, but what true need is there to release it just yet? Especially since kinect has only taken off within the past year or two and they released a newer version of the 360. I'll be shocked if it does come out next year, if they're hesitant to announce it that has to mean something. I can't honestly complain a whole lot about the games that are being released unless I really nitpicked. I think Microsoft, although considered all-mighty and powerful, needs to dominate the next-gen gaming scene.

The first Xbox only lasted 4 years before the 360 came out, but it's seems like it's the complete opposite with this generation. They can't wait to prolong it even further and even a 2013 holiday release seems optimistic at this point, although that would make the 360 last twice as long as the first Xbox. I understand that making a completely new console is expensive, it's got to be more powerful and all-around better than the last one. Anything less than that is not worth doing, but they can't keep this procrastination up for long. Even the Playstation 2 with all of its longevity and huge success didn't take that long before a successor was made (and Xbox 360 is no Playstation 2).

And "low-cost" model will be discontinue 6 month later after release.

I never can consider the Xbox as a gamers console. If I ever bought a 720, it would probably be the rumored casual version, that only plays XBL Acrade games.

I doubt the processor will be weaker on the low-cost model because even XBLA games are quite processor demanding these days.

I honestly hope they wait a while... I don't want to shell out more money on new system.

They will only announce it at E3... and I doubt they will ship it a mere 5 months later - I am waiting for the PS4 anyways so I guess I will enjoy all the speculation a neutral XD

I hope all the extra features 90% of gamers don't use won't drive up the price. After all, I do have a computer to surf the internet already. The only time I see one of my friend's xbox on anything other than a game or netflix is when their girlfriend is using it to surf internet explorer.

ah next gen console....how amusing you are, your flashy well marketed and over priced and always worlds behind the PC >:D trololo but real talk whats the point in a new console when most devs and or publishers have almost lost all creativity. we get a new system to play a shinier sequel that we already played just now it is pretty pretty shinny shinny.

hopefully it can run bluray........... not much they can do with a new console that the old ones couldnt handle...... hd / 3d graphics what else are they gonna improve?

You know what's sad.. I don't want one, but I'm going to end up buying one anyway.  I don't feel normal unless I have all the consoles.  Haven't played my 360 in months, so  don't even know why I want another paperweight. I need psychiatry.

After seeing the next gen tech demo by Square-Enix (named Agni's Philosophy by the way), I cant wait to play the next gen consoles!! I wont buy the xbox 720, but I'll gladly buy the PS4. At least we got big titles coming for us to wait next gen consoles, like Ni No Kuni for JRPG fans (like me), Tomb Raider for action/adventure fans (me as well), and GTAV for sandbox fans (again). ^_^

i don't think it will be called 720 everyone has randomly decided on that name i hope they don't call it that though because it would be a lame name. xbox  360 cool xbox  720 no need to name it that it just stupid

BadMrSnake
BadMrSnake

The real name will be Xbox Infinite!  not 720.   For you not in the know people,  it's not 360+360=720 , The 360 was a circle, so a double circle would be Infinite!    You've officially been pimped!

theimortal2
theimortal2

speaking of windows 7 i'm not even sure why it's even called that.  it's not the 7th version of windows (windows 3.1 95 98 me xp vista would make it the 9th version).  all i can think of is they counted 95 98 and me as one version.  or generation.  they did all look fairly similar.

@magicalclick If you prefer to use more than one disc and swap them it's your choice. Blu-Ray = Sony and Microsoft doesn't like Sony.

@GH05T-666 Anything is possible but I haven't seen Microsoft go head to head on a console release against Sony. Their respective release dates have usually been a year apart.

@mtait01 Umm sorry, E3 is big, don't get me wrong, but Microsoft isn't going to do their first unveiling at E3. They aren't going to want to share their much deserved spotlight with anyone else so it will be sooner then that.

@darckdeth Err? Next gen consoles has nothing to do with creativity, It's marketing advancement.

Stop being so foolish, the industry will always have a softie for console gamers over PC. There's still a large sector of people who like gaming on living room consoles over a mouse and keyboard. There are also those who can't afford $1000 high end PC's. The console gamer populace is still large in numbers as well.

I'm still a PC gamer to this day and even I can see that other PC gamers are on an ego trip. Even though consoles are 7 years behind, PC games are not dramatically leaps and bounds ahead visually.

@andytisnt It truly astonishes me how ignorant people are about tech. I am not trying to be mean, but really. Console players are very ignorant and misinformed, relatively. How can you say there is not much they can do with new consoles that the old ones can't. How can you make a statement like that and actually believe it?

@JustPlainLucas I'm brutal too. I buy everything that catches my eye. I've got about 30 back-logged games right now, and every console you can buy. I just love shiny video games, and shiny video game stuff!

Hey_Jay
Hey_Jay

@JustPlainLucas Makes perfect sense to me...

Perhaps, it's also the idea that you have the option to play a particular game on a system, even if you don't really want to. By owning each system, you eliminate a step between you and playing this hypothetical game that you may or may not want to play, but you at least take solace in the fact that you 'can' play it, should the desire grow great enough.

... unless I, too, need psychiatry.

@jtthegame316 the 360 was better?  give me a break theyre both ridiculous names but its all ms fault and they will not put a 3 behind xbox for the same reason they didnt put 2 behind the current one.

@bigcrusha  @darckdeth Everyone's on an ego trip, dude.

Xbox and Sony users are on an "Ego Trip", compared to Nintendo as well.

Don't be biased either, it is what it is.

@bigcrusha  @darckdeth IMO, what makes consoles competitive nowadays is their low price when compared to PCs - hence drawing casual gamers to shell out 150-300$ for a console. Release a new 600$ console and you'll lose all these people who came on board because of the low price (IMHO).  Given the low prices of PCs nowadays, if I had a limited budget, I'd pretty much rather buy a new desktop (for a bit more money) than a new console. Especially if there is still a performance/component gap between said console and PCs.

Ghosthunter54
Ghosthunter54

@Jermone123  @andytisnt In all honesty, a super high end PC won't get you anything over a console except for better graphics for 90% of games. Unless the game is a PC exclusive designed to be used by only very high end rigs (which is pretty rare), you don't get much with a PC over a console. The reason being that games are made for either the PC or the Console and then ported to the other. It's a lot more work to port a game to a console that uses tech the console doesn't have. As such, designers make games that can be run on a console for the PC and just dial up the graphics. Even MMOs don't gain much from a PC because they have to market to a large group of people with varying PCs. I have a 3 year old gaming laptop (a laptop, mind you, not a desktop), and I can still play pretty much every PC game that comes out just fine.

Like it or not, the PC crowd gets games that are also marketed to console owners. So long as consoles exist and are a large part of the market, PC gamers don't get anything better than console gamers with only a few exceptions of PC only games, designed for high end PCs (which not too many people even own, which is why they aren't released that often).

@digi-demon  @andytisnt if its still being used how is it old tech? they r actually improving it made from 50 gb to 70 gb how is that old ??? many modern pc's dont even have bluray you saying this just show s how ignorant you are if HVD were to even be mention in media anytime soon then it would be old tech ( holographic versatile disc) look it up

@Renegade__angel  @bigcrusha  @darckdeth I also own two 2 PCs, a PS3 and an XBox360. I buy games for each roughly every two weeks. That being said, I'm a hardcore gamer with a job who chooses to shell out a significant amount of money on gaming. I'm pretty sure Microsoft and Sony's bread and butter is a mix of hardcores and casuals. My point is that most casuals were drawn in by the cheap console prices (a consequence of a long console cycle). New consoles and their high prices may hurt that part of the market.

Renegade__angel
Renegade__angel

@atn98  @bigcrusha  @darckdeth IMO, it's the perks that come with consoles.

Like the Xbox LIVE service which kicks Steam and even the PSN out the window.

Or the PS3's awesome exclusives that will never see the light of day on any other platform.

Consoles aren't competitive because they're marketed towards idiots as most PC jocks believe, they have reasons to own them over a gaming PC, and as someone who plays on all 3, I can say I spend money for games on all 3 of them, fairly equally. It just all depends on the game, the developer and so on.
