Xbox 720 announcement in May?

Robert W. Baird analyst Colin Sebastian says Microsoft to reveal future platform next month.

by

Microsoft will announce the Xbox 720 in May, according to Robert W. Baird analyst Colin Sebastian. The news came from a note to investors today about Electronic Arts, with Sebastian saying this announcement will be a catalyst for shares.

No information regarding the exact date or venue of the rumored announcement was divulged.

A previous report suggested Microsoft would announce the new platform during a one-off media event later this month.

A Microsoft representative told GameSpot, "We do not comment on rumors or speculation. We are always thinking about what is next for our platform, but we don't have anything further to share at this time."

Though Microsoft has not officially spoken about the Xbox 720, speculation about the platform has not been lacking. GameStop CEO recently said the console is a "very hot, compelling device," adding that the "world is going to stand up and take notice" when Microsoft finally shares details about the system.

According to past reports, the Xbox 720 may require Kinect and an Internet connection to function, block used games, and feature Siri-like voice recognition, among other features.

Microsoft has previously warned users about Xbox 720 scam sites.

I would love to see the industry have this fight with Congress. Games are a form of free speech and we have ratings for a reason. Kids being exposed to violence in video games is a parenting issue.

I agree - I hate it when I see movie trailers that practically give me an entire plot summary, minus a few extraneous details.

Still very skeptical about this game. Sure, the cinematic was great, but I could have said the same about Aion five years ago.

I think Sony caught MS off-guard and they weren't ready for a new console release.  Now they are scrambling to catch up and show the world what they have.

well.. "the world is going to stand up and take notice"..

something tells me, this will be for entirely wrong reasons.. stop BSing us MS... get over and done with the announcement rather than just teasing us potential buyers.. if this continues, Sony will easily be a couple of steps ahead as they are already generating sufficient interest at this stage even without showing the actual console design !

All this fanboy ranting is just envy. I`m gonna get all consoles plus upgrade my gaming PC rig. The hardware is only as good as its software, so I`m not gonna shoot myself in the nu-tsack and miss out on any great game. Everything FTW!!!

Games is what matters. Microsoft needs to worry about that more than their hardware. I already know Sony has me already with so many potential games with all their IPs and there record of constantly releasing new IPs.

From the things i have been hearing i don't think ms will block used which means i will be able to turn to them for my gaming needs ok i buy new anyway but i don't agree with blocking used. I have noticed how it is the richest of companies  like EA that attack the used market any way so that tells me the attacks on used are greed driven and one thing i never stand by is greed.

I just hope the Xbox 720 dashboard is super fast unlike the 360 dashboard. It always took way too long to do stuff, especially while running a game. Yeah, I know that's asking a lot, but it's really frustrating when trying to change music or type messages etc.

I hope they don't show the controller like the way Sony did. I am gonna puke if I get to see more controllers.... I want to see the friggin console.

I'm surprised by the May announcement date, simply because it's so close to E3.

What kind of special jerk has to post on here about how much 1 game system is better than the other???  IT IS A GAME!  GET OVER YOURSELF.  You know which one you should play?  The one you have more online friends on, because that makes online gaming more fun, and playing single player games is lame.  Which brings me to my next point...while trifling over the hardware is just dumb because no game studio has enough time in their budget to make a game that truly utilizes the potential of the PS3 over the XBOX, the debate over which game system's online service is better is perfectly viable for non-jerks.

THAT being said...in my experience:

PSN:

PRO:---FREE

CON:---You get what you pay for...a buncha whiny little kids that can't afford $60 a year (or are too stupid to go to a Microsoft store and get it for $40) because they DO NOTHING BUT PLAY VIDEO GAMES and will whoop your old ass at CoD or whatever game you are playing because they a) have nothing else in their life or b) can Mod without consequence on an "unsupervised" network

XBL:

PRO:---Syncs on my phone and PC...for some reason my more mature friends all play there (not being a hipster here...really that's just the way it is), reward programs give me FREE SHIT ALL THE DAMN TIME, ummm oh yeah, automatically disables consoles with Mod chips too so it levels the playing field a little bit.

CON:---It's not free

@tim1935

Actually it's the exact opposite of what you just said!

Sony rushed to anounce PS4 (we haven't seen the actual console!) because they had seen what MS is going to announce, scared them, and then rushed in to announce PS4 so they can have some sort of "time" momentum before the world see's the Xbox "720".

Another fact you should know is that the PS4 initially had 4GB of RAM and when Sony found out that the next Xbox will have 8 GB of RAM they changed their specs right before they "announce" it.

@Gravity_Slave If I'm required to have Kinect then I'll pass. I don't need microsoft telling me how many people in my home can watch a movie, etc... Also, blocking used games is an automatic pass for me...I have too many people in my house that play games on different consoles (4 consoles, 4 people, we only buy 4 copies of games we want to play together.) Requiring an internet connection isn't a big deal, as it will always have one, but if I get DRM server down errors, I'll rip it out of the wall and throw it through a MS Window :D. As for being unoriginal, Sony did just name their next console the, "PS4"...

LatinproX

@Gravity_Slave and the title PS4 is so original and creative?! XD. I do agree about the blue letter points though. Utter BS.

godzillavskong

@LatinproX I concur. Upgrading my crossfired 6870s for a stronger single GPU, with at least 2-3gb of VRAM, grabbing a ps4, 720, WiiU, and .....a Dreamcast HD!

@akz_chris your comment fails. as you are addressing speculation.

Everyone already knows, Xbox is going to win hard as long as they don't include CINAVIA tech in their stupid blue ray like Sony.

@akz_chris It might be similar to what the Wii does, but takes it a step further (meaning it may do updates while it is off). It may not be a requirement to always be online

@akz_chris No Microsoft member said it requires alway online.
Why not wait for the official facts?

@Skywilker Funny because Xbox is FILLED with whiny kids. It's well known, don't even try to deny that. Single player games lame? Nah, it's just you that's shallow.

@DJMist @tim1935 These kinds of events don't just get "rushed" out. Sony would have had to reserve their venue months in advance and send formal invites out to all the developers that showed up and give them time to prepare. And yes, time momentum does matter here. Sony and the PS4 are getting talked about in the press - meanwhile we still don't know what's coming for the next X-Box and most of the rumors have been quite negative (always on-line, mandatory Kinect, etc). If what Sony showed at their press conference was "rushed", MS has no chance. We only saw a third of Sony's 1st party studios and Kaz already confirmed that every studio is working on a PS4 game - not to mention other 3rd party devs.

McGregor

@Gravity_Slave I should clarify, it's not like we are roommates, it's all family. I buy the games, the 2 kids play them when they want on their consoles...If I can't do that, we'll be a PS4 only family.

@thebeachguy90 @Skywilker  No doubt there are little shits on XBL too...and just answer honestly, if you have a choice between single player and online play...which do you choose? I play through single player campaigns, jump through thier hoops, collect thief nick nacks...but the real fun is playing against (or alongside) a human opponent.

Skywilker

@thebeachguy90 @Skywilker its surprisingly easy to mute/block people in public games...but the point is going off track, I was merely trying to illustrate something that differentiates the systems other than hardware specs. In the end they will both run the same games hardware wise so single player gaming does nothing to make 1 system stand out

thebeachguy90
thebeachguy90

@Skywilker I'm more of a single player gamer. I do play online sometimes but it's just with friends.   I just find the general public lobbies are filled with douchebags, modders, trolls, immaturity, it's annoying as crap.  It's turned me off. No one to bother me in single player.
