Xbox 360 US sales hit 1.26 million in November

Strong sales during Black Friday week help push console to top spot for 23rd straight month; total retail spend hits $1.2 billion.

Microsoft sold 1.26 million Xbox 360 consoles in the United States during November, the company has announced, citing NPD data. Strong sales of 750,000 units during Black Friday week alone helped make the console the top-performer for the 23rd straight month.

In addition, Microsoft announced that total retail spending for the Xbox 360 platform (hardware, software, and accessories) hit $1.2 billion for the month. This is better than any other console in the US, Microsoft said.

By comparison, Nintendo sold a total of 1.75 million hardware units (Wii, Wii U, DS, and 3DS) during the month. Sony has not announced full-month sales figures for November. However, it previously revealed that it sold 525,000 PlayStation 3 units and 160,000 PlayStation Vita systems during Black Friday week alone for a total hardware mark of 685,000 during the shopping bonanza.

I work hard, make good enough money to buy a xbox, ps3, gaming pc (built myself) and Wii. I am not bragging - but I do want you all to know I am still very serious about my what I can spend my money on.

On that - I could give a rats ass what system does this or that - plays blu ray, hd dvd, or wii, which i think plays an eight track cassette, though poorly. I and all of the others friends I game with also do not care if it is motion controlled, or camera or whatever.

We JUST CARE ABOUT THE GAME, THE GAME PERIOD. no really just the GAME.

hey did I mention the GAME?

I buy a console based on the game or games it will play on.

On that note- I mostly play on the xbox 360, then ps3, then pc, then wii and alot of hours on the psone still yet. This generation games like Lost Odyssey, Mass Effect, Gears, Bioshock, Assassin, etc have kept me more interested in the 360.

Every xbox 360 that was bought early on got RROD eventually, but MS fixed and replaced them all in a timely manner with no further problems. XBL does have alot to do with it, COD MW series is alot of fun with a gun.

Yes my ps3 has seen alot of hours logged onto it, FF13, uncharted, ... I am sure there were many more game i played on it but can't remember them: oh yeah FF7, Saiyuki, FFT. Also a billion blu rays movies.

The Wii - well the kids play it more then me, but I do have a couple of RPGs planned. Oh who am i kidding the Wii sucked - besides some 1rst party games (which were not that awesome) it collected dust. Tried some old downloadable games - but just not the same.

The PC - this generation had tons of awesome games - as more games were made for both console and pc. helped alot. I guess where the xbox developer tools are architecture d toward pc and easier to develop for we got to see alot more crossover games this gen. Steam helped alot also.

Still though the xbox 360 - couch friendly, won more time then any other system. Props to you "lifts glass" xbox 360 well done and here is to an even better new year and new system (long over due).

Good, with continued successes in sales from XBox and PS3 means Microsoft and Sony will continue to support these systems maybe even after their new systems emerge.  It basically means our consoles have a little bit less of a chance to collet dust on our shelves in the near future.

And to those still out there encouraging a fanboy flamewar, that's just pathetic.  The systems have been out for SEVEN years.  If you havnt owned BOTH systems by now then it's better off go to jump in a lake.  Why bash the other system just because in 7 years you havn't come up with the cash to buy a 2nd system??

Both PS3 and Xbox 360 are great systems.   I am happy with their lifespans of 6-7 years thus far.   Xbox 360 has another 1-2 strong years left in it, PS 3 has about 2-3 strong years left in it due to a small amount of untapped potential.   What is interesting is seeing which systems will be removed from shelves on stores to make room for the new games and software.  I think PSP is the first casualty.

PS3 is better. Why? Cause it got better dedicated games.

Good to see it hit that milestone. I've been enjoying Xbox since the original launched and they've kept it afloat with great titles, although they are getting a little sparse lately in the exclusive dept.. Selling this many units is a main reason why they really don't wanna make the jump to new hardware. That's a huge userbase with lots of revenue to be made off of. I just hope they either make it backwards compatible, or at least support it for a few years afterwards.

ummm, who cares.  xbox and ps3 are both on par with one another.  not real difference other than preference...oh and the fact the ps3 plays blue ray.  considering that i don't know why anybody buys the xbox???

I never understand why it hurts people's feelings or makes people feel vindicated that one console sold better than another.  It's just business, folks.  They're not about to stop making games for the [insert your favorite console here].  Relax.

Healthy sales across all three main platforms means more incentive to provide high quality service and software.  Good 360 sales is good for Microsoft (obviously) and for 360 owners, as it provides MS and gamemakers reason to keep supporting the platform.  It's also good for PS3 owners because it puts pressure on Sony to do the same to maintain its market share and gain new customers.

It's also good for game companies, as it provides for a larger overall market for their product, if multiplatform, or larger incentives to stay exclusive if not.

Good sales figures are good for the game player, regardless of the platform they own and/or play on, so long as there are at least two big players in the market to create competition.

As a 360 owner, I want both the 360 and the PS3 and their next gen equivalents to sell well because I benefit from both my platform of choice being successful and from it having healthy competition.

I don't care who "wins" in hardware or software sales.  I care about getting good games to play.  Competition is good for that.

The question is which has fans more than the other x360 or PS3?

Congrats on the sales, but do we really need to hear this? And so frequently for that matter? This is supposed to be an entertainment web site, and they keep presenting us with numbers like it's the stock market. Quite frankly, I don't directly care how many systems are selling, only what products are coming out for them (games, accessories, new systems, etc.).

@philMcCrevis You contradict yourself. You say they're on par with each other yet you don't know why anyone buys a Xbox? Both good yet the 360 came out first and was cheaper. I see a lot of reasons to own a 360. That and the certain exclusives like gears, halo, and Forza. Both are great consoles, but they can't play the others exclusives, so that's a big reason to own one, or the other.

@theKSMM Thank heavens people like you exist...why do people not understand that the more systems there are the more we all benefit??? Competition between corporations is good for the consumer! Don't believe me? Ask all the Canadians that drive to the states to catch a damn flight.

@greatgood The breaking down excuse is getting old , this isn't 2006 -2008. I repair consoles as a side job and you know what more PS3's are coming in. The fat and slim models are breaking down whether it's YLOD, or a bad HDD thanks to Sony, or even a dead blu ray lens. Don't get me wrong I gets 360's but not that many slims, mainly old ones like the ones with the falcon named MB and the ones before that. I'd say I'm getting 3 ps3's to every 1 360

@Dominicobaggio I'm pretty sure that the attach rate for the XBOX 360 is measurably higher than it is for the PlayStation 3.  I don't feel like looking for it, but I'll just say that I've never seen a game on both platforms where the PS3 version outsold the X360 version.

TheArcade

@Dominicobaggio Gamestop didn't submit PS3's install base after they reported Sony's Black Friday sales? I will be really surprised if the didn't.

Why on Earth would a good amount of 360 sales be replacements? Microsoft has a better hardware replacement policy than Sony. It's absurd to believe a lot of 360's are rebuys especially when you look at how their software is doing.

flyingdutchdog3

 @Dominicobaggio

Oh the "replacement" excuse again, and a hint of conspiracy between Microsoft and Gamespot fudging the figures. Come on buddy you can do better ... you know it is 2012 don''t you?

MrHanky35
MrHanky35

 @Dominicobaggio

You cant discredit replacement sales. If anything, It shows that people are willing to buy it for a 2nd time, and that sez more about the console then anything. i have every platform. my first 360 broke the first week (that being the week it came out, ((free replacement))). 2nd broke the week halo 3 came out (RROD, free replacement), 3rd the video just broke about 2-3 years ago (paid for the newer black/built in wifi model) and the newest one has worked great for 2-3 years and still. iv spent so much time on it that i can totally justify those 2 purchases plus 10 years of live. my ps3 got struck by lightning and it fried the hdmi port, it was free to fix, i was just too lazy and didnt care enough to transfer all my memory to an external HD b/c they said if I didn’t id lose all my saves. im not calling it a bad console by NO means, its just that the games it specializes in arent my forte. The console itself is made VERY well, and they have great customer service. And a lot of exclusive games a lot of ppl like.

Janpieterzun

@Dominicobaggio Always a cloud of suspicion when one has an agenda to push. Why do you care so much how the PS3 does? Need to justify your purchase? Idiot. I have all consoles, could care less.

@MrHanky35 More than anything im suprised why a global website like this doesnt post global sales. They love to post negative sales stories for ps3, and report american sales where the global picture is very different. Im looking at gamespit uk, not usa. Ps I dont want any console to fail, for reasons ive stated before.

@kennythomas26  @greatgood If by RLofD you mean the blinking red light it's basically what shows after the YLOD. The red screen can be several issues ranging from screwed up software to some type of other failure. As for overheating I have seen it happen it used to happen to my 40gb which I rarely used. I bought it watched a few blu rays didn't play it for a few months and then when I played GoW 3 the fan would go into full blast, and sometimes over heat which is nuts since i barely used it/it had no dust in it.

@Dominicobaggio  Those numbers look pretty small for a title that undoubtedly went platinum, so I'm guessing they are the sales for a single week.  I would be surprised if those ratings held up over the "lifetime" of the game (e.g. across six months or a year).

Plus, didn't Sony introduce an Assassin's Creed bundle for the holidays?  No doubt that would skew sales in their favor.  Sure, it's good for Sony that they can outsell Microsoft from time to time, but I doubt that it happens often if ever (so I stand by my initial statement about attach rates).

Not fanboy hype, I've paid attention to the relative sales over the years, and the X360 versions of games that I pay attention to always outsell the PS3 versions.  It won't hurt my feelings to learn that PS3 is outselling X360 in anything. ;-)
