Xbox 360 sales reach 80 million units

Life-to-date global sales reach new milestone; September's $401.2 million in US Xbox 360 software sales was largest ever and most for any console.

Microsoft has now sold to retailers (that is, shipped) more than 80 million consoles across the world, the company announced today as part of its NPD report for September.

Xbox 360 software sales in the United States alone reached $401.2 million in September, the biggest month on record for the company and more than any other console in the US. Grand Theft Auto V was likely a contributor to that milestone, as that game alone made up more than 50 percent of all US software sales in September.

Lastly, Microsoft said the Xbox 360 remains the number one selling console in the US for 2013, moving 1.6 million units this year.

Notably, Sony's PS3 was the top home console overall in September, breaking the Xbox 360's 32-month streak from January 2011 through August 2013. The NPD Group said the PS3's upswing this month was largely driven by sales of the special 500GB GTAV bundle.

The Xbox One launches on November 22 for $500.

It's been over 80 million units for quite a while, this is months old news.

It will be interesting to see what happens with the X180's reliability since Microsoft is rushing it to retail to keep up with the PS4.  You never hear about how the X360 came in third during this current gen behind the Wii and PS3.  It's all about US sales and how the X360 has come in first.  Things will turn out differently for the next gen.  I predict the next gen turning out this way PS4, WiiU and then a distant 3rd the X180.

Divide this number by how many consoles the average player has gone through due to RROD (4) which equals out to be 20,000,000 individuals. Not really all that impressive. Congrats on having a 56% failure rate and never recalling the first, second, and third releases of the console.

If you enjoy the console and its games you bought, numbers doesnt really matter...and never did.

The last great console from Microsoft that was worth owning, because Xbone is a huge piece of garbage.

I like my 360 slim.  Quiet and no RROD.  I have to question though how many of these 80 million units that have been shipped were replacements for the older models.  My slim is my third 360.

I know its an off-topic, but anybody knows whats last official confirmed PS3 sales to date? Have they reached 80million already? Cannot find any reliable source.

This article contains bits that both Xbox and PS fanboys can rejoice and troll about. How thoughtful and nice of Eddie to give fuel to both camps of narrowminded, arrogant SOB's :D.

Meanwhile, I of course claim that the PC is best and even though I don't care about GTA V, it *will* come to PC's at a later date, with all the bugs removed and glorious mods waiting to be experienced.

@CrusaderForeverIf 8 years of development is RUSHING, then I dunno...

"PS4, WiiU and then a distant 3rd the X180."

Not a chance. Wii U will fail miserably, sales will be weaker than Gamecube's.

@CrusaderForever
Lets see:
PS2...150 millions > PS3...80 millions
Xbox...25 millions < X360...80 millions
Wii.....100 millions >WiiU now currently 4 millions one year after launch.
Your analysis is bit strange.

@mikemaj82 I believe that less than VGChartz, both are false. That one doesn't even have an attempt at evidence.

@mikemaj82Even in this article it says:

You havent read it?

@Frosty192 Launch 360 sitting here next to my overpriced ps3 that never delivered on its promises and went through 4 controllers.  Never again Sony, the only console of theirs that I will have is the ps2.

@Frosty192 The average player suffered 4?  Where di you get that number from?  I got a 360 in 2007 and it never RROD on me from the time I got it till I traded it in for the first slim.

Stevo_the_gamer
Stevo_the_gamer moderator moderator

@Frosty192 RROD stopped being a problem in 2008--and at that time there was less than 20 million 360s on the market. The refurbished units using the same designs of the 90nm GPU and CPU were probably quick to return to the RROD state. Jasper design ended the RROD.

@Riddick123 I know. I have to admit, I've been lucky. I have one of the first models and the darn thing still runs. Of course, I say that and I will get hit with the Red Ring of Death next time I turn it on. LOL

malokevi

@Riddick123 My slim is my second. My first one broke down about a year ago, and I think it was a disk drive issue. I was lucky never to encounter the RROD.

@oKiRe original xbox has 45nm process but new one got 28nm. Old one heats more and has worse silicon or something. Considering how GTA5 looks, it might be pushing old one above the limits.

@Master_Overlord On vgchartz, PS3 reached the 80 million milestone last week, while Xbox 360 managed to sell 78.9 million units world wide. It's strange a coincidence that exactly yesterday was added the last sales numbers on vgchartz, and than Microsoft are saying it's them who sold 80 million consoles.

dribblesbarbax

@Hurvl Ehhh we all know that it will come to PC early next year but we also should know that it will also bring its own bugs, stability and driver issues. PC games are terribly optimised after being ported from consoles. Well thats my experience anyway. All PC's behave differently.

@Gamesfetch Hey, I actually loved Old GS, was one of my most visited Gaming sites for like 5 years or more. But now its hard for myself to get used to new layout, finding news I want, is harder than before and for some reason its loading slower, although my internet havent changed. Just my thoughts, but maybe others think changes are for good?

Hurvl
Hurvl

@Gamesfetch What if I told you that no company ever goes back to a previous design. It's too costly and too much a prestige loss to go back to it. I've witnessed the dramatic decrease in comments since they launched the "new and improved" GameSpot, but it's not too bad over all. I've seen worse remakes.

@sladakrobot @CrusaderForever Nothing beats fan boys like facts. It is true that the bulk of 360 sales were from the US, but the talk like the PS3 left the 360 in the dust.

CrusaderForever
CrusaderForever

@sladakrobot @CrusaderForever

What does the past have to do with the future?  The WiiU is about to explode with their first party titles coming out soon.  The PS4 is pro gamer and the architecture is pro developer.  Not to mention the juggernaut that is the PS4 first party developers.  The PS4 advertising is doing a lot better than last gen.  Just the other day I was watching an NHL game and saw the PS4 logo on the boards of the rink with no X180 advertising.   Of course my prediction is just that a prediction but the facts are also supporting.  There is a lot of positive buzz going around for the WiiU and PS4 right now.

tomservo51
tomservo51

@yahboo22 @Frosty192 I think you're the exception. If you kept your 360 in a very cool environment you'd have a much better change of not getting the RROD.

Frosty192
Frosty192

@Stevo_the_gamer @Frosty192 Agreed but it took them 3 years of failures to get it right. To me, the first slim is their best design. draws heat straight out the top and does not have to be sucked out like the original consoles. WAY better heating solution that is why I jumped ship from the old console and got the slim, zero problems.

@strongmokus @Master_Overlord VGCHARTZ is NOT RELIABLE!!!!

https://www.google.com/#psj=1&q=vgchartz+is+not+reliable

never has been, NEVER WILL BE. They guestimate everything and then when NPD numbers come out they adjust to what NPD says. They have never been a source to use on the net.

You people think those "Pre-Order" numbers are accurate? then how come Gamespot doesn't report them? Because VGCHARTZ is GARBAGE.

Hurvl

@dribblesbarbax @Hurvl The PC port could very well include some new bugs, but at least the GTA Online part won't be full of issues when PC gamers get to it and it'll probably have a lot more content as well.

@Triton @Hurvl But what if you like one platform more than the other? I've read several comments about people who say that they have both or all three, yet still sound like fanboys. I don't need anything else than the PC.
