This news article content needs the sales numbers of the other consoles to contrast with, as well as the attachment rate or tie ratio. For instance the Wii has outsold both MS and PS3 worldwide with great penetration in europe. But on that, the wii attachment rate is below that of MS and the games that sold the most were the heavily asian, japanese $15 dollar niche games so popular in japan. Sony, who has lag behind for years has now out sold MS in consoles, but has the worst attachment rate of the three.
What has been big news this gen is that sony has done well in EU even though they have come out last in attachment ratio which is how consoles makers make money. Still though EU is considered the best new emerging market which is why I think they will go big before they go home. Microsoft has done really well in attachment ratio in Japan and EU even though their sales of consoles were low. Merchants know that MS can move software and it is becoming the hardcore gamers console of choice for new markets around the world. The wii and nintendo has a ton of money from the wii console sales but did not do as well in software, vendors in EU and USA got burnt it will take alot of good will for Nintendo to repair those ties. As for America, our gaming and development is still the 800lb gorilla in the room, but new large markets like EU, SA, AU mean a lot to console makers, while Japan sadly is in a state of apathy.
If you want to know who won 7th generation it is microsoft and they won it big, with better penetration in emerging markets then they could have hoped for as well as strong adoption of XBL and digital content. While Nintendo came in last. And Sony is in need of a more focused game plan. (hopefully one where its CEOs are not constantly pulling resources and money from its games division to fund bravio tv and hospital equipment development). While the PC market has made great strides because of the exteneded console cycle, if they weather the new console storm for the next couple of years, they will do really well 8th gen. Do not get me wrong - PC share of the gaming market is dwarfed by console but has still made a strong stride. While everyone thinks the PC will dominate the market - well just remember for every gaming pc built in rich america 20 new console gamers are starting in emerging markets abroad. And the profit or licensing fees made on pc software sales are alot lower then consoles.
I think either way it will be a boon for gamers 8th generation and all of the current console makers will be around for 9th, but not sure in what form.
IT's been OVER SEVEN YEARS and only 76 Million? PS2 sold well over that much by this time.
Both Sony and Microsoft are rushing to early to next gen. With the low cost people are willing to pay the games will not be that much different or better. In addition, now with so much pressure on how game violence affects people who play an increase in graphics, for better realistic blood and shredded bodies will only hurt the industry which craves realistic looking violence.
With pads, phones, handheld gaming, Steam box, Onlive, ouya, gamestick, it is incumbent for consoles to decide how they should work and their changing place among all the entertainment choices and what people want from a GAME on a console.
XBOX360 is the best choice for hardcore gamers. i am playing XBOX360 for 6 years. sony is killing itself to shows it`s little black console is selling more but we laugh. MICROSOFT is better in this generation and i am so happy;because sony must learns that we(gamers) choose consoles for games not for names. ^__^
Too bad Microsoft didn't announced their products globally. For example, here in Turkey, Xbox 360 announced itself as an official brand few months ago. It is good but on the other hand it is stupid since next-gen consoles are on the way. Why officially announce a product that was released back in 2005 and a new model is on the way. On the other hand, Sony was known around the world even in the Middle East.
I used to be a Playstation fan, infact I still am. But I know now that PS fans most of them are just stupid people following their friends. They thing just because PS has better graphix that even common games to both consoles in which PS messes up and says still the ps has better graphix than the xbox. I now hate the ps controller xbox is way better including the stupid r1 and r2 buttons and the over sensitive and un ergonomic dualshock analog sticks. I think the xbox controller should be tiny but smaller and have a better d pad but other than that blows the ps away. I am just glad that ps caught up with xbox and I dont care who wins but if ps wins its kinda a shame since the whole world thinks ps is better other than north america.
for all fairness, you get much more 'bang for your buck' if u bought a PS3. because in it's early years (fat PS3) it is sold with a loss. meaning that u get much cheaper hardware compare to it's production cost.
@jenovaschilld Xbox 360 lost big time this generation. First, they sold 76M so far, but they have only 40M running. Second, there's no proof that Xbox 360 sold more games than PS3, that's just MS propaganda. Third, 360's penetration on emerging marketing is very low compare to PS3 and even worse for games sold, because on those places they mostly buy 360s only to be able to pirate games (PS3 doesn't allow them).
@blaze_craze Are you saying it's not possible that 'mystery' shoppers bought cargo-ships-full of 360's and then just dumped them in a landfill with the sole purpose of boosting sales figures...? You shouldn't.
@Ravenlore_basic PS2 reached those numbers when it was selling for $99, neither 360 or PS3 have dropped that low yet and neither have sold that many for this reason, it doesn't mean the PS3 sucks too, its just talking longer to get that low.
@CumGetSome "are just stupid people following their friends." The main reason the 360 sold so well this generation is because of competitive online gaming. Who's following who's friends in this scenario? If any console benefited from a follow-the-leader mentality, it was the 360, not PS3.
@02050muh Dude xbox sold at a loss too. See just like my comment above you PS guys never read about your competitor. Im also a PS guy but am leaning to my xbox and I have both. I hate PS marketplace everything is jumbled up. Once you download a game it downloads again after it has downloaded itself to the harddrive. Also ps graphix are better. their first party games are better than the xbox ones in the graphix department but other than that the ps is way harder to develop games for. And no one admits even though a thousand and one reviewers admit that a PS version of a common game example Farcry 3 sometimes messes up. Any ways I will stop rambling you PS guys do your thing.
I'm sorry Claudius, but Jenovas is right. The 360 does have the highest
attach rate, its not a secret and it is well known. The Wii sold more
consoles than either Microsoft or SONY, but they most certainly did not
sell as many games per console. The unfortunate truth is that SONY in
fact does have the lowest attach rate. This is known to be one of the
reasons SONY stopped releasing its sale numbers.
@The_Dragon_Born@tgwolf This is not a financial issue maybe gamers is smart enough to save money. Both console deliver and how i see it xbox 360 is not superior nor the PS3, but the 360 it definitely the most "stand out" console out there. it's advertise and being promoted alot how can you dispute that?
@tgwolf@blaze_craze Please, don't spread that MS, when the slim Xbox 360 was launched, bought thousands of first generation Xbox 360 and dumped them. Saving money not having to replace them for 3 years and boosting their sales numbers. You shouldn't, because you don't have proof of that.
@WolfGrey@xblackdivine He wasn't trolling, I mean it's obvious that guy isn't a fanboy. If Sony had released a better system we would've bought that. But they released an abysmal system at launch that slowly got better. The 360 was solid from launch, the gap has shrunk between how bad the PS3 used to be compared to how good the 360 is, but it's still there. Look at Skyrim, look at Capcom games that run significantly better on the 360 and other developers that port to the PS3 instead of developing for it. There are problems with both systems, but is it so crazy to think that Sixaxis on a 600 dollar price tag and unnecessary BluRay just didn't appeal to a lot of people?
@FAIL_TR0LL@xblackdivine If it'susually the multiplats that you're into most of the time, you might want to look into something called a "gaming PC", because 99% of the time, the games run smoother and look better than your precious 360. Or you can continue defending an obsolete console.
@CumGetSome@02050muh Most of the time when a PS3 fanboy is talking about the better graphical capabilities of the PS3, they are referring to the potential. This potential is recognized by exclusive games. You're right, the PS3 is more difficult to develop for and that's why most multiplat developers use the 360 as a lead platform and then port it over to the PS3. The fact that these developers don't take enough time to polish/optimize the PS3 versions isn't a fault of the hardware, it's a fault of the business and release schedules. You keep claiming that "PS guys never read about your competitor", but that simply isn't true. A more thorough understanding of the hardware, development schedules and business of this industry would reveal to you the causes of these deficiencies in multiplat releases. FYI: I typically play my 360 more often than my PS3, but that doesn't mean that the 360 is a better console. Take your opinions out of the equation.
@Jebril@WolfGrey@xblackdivine I agree that Sony needed to do better but PS3 was sacrificed so that BLURAY would win. I wish they would have waited and did better. Still, I would not blame PS3 for skyrim. Capcom games may play a little better but not a huge bit.
@Jebril The PS3 went from an abysmal ro a solid console while Xbox has gone the opposite. Turning into a giant smartphones with the most useless apps that can accessed elsewhere for free. Most multiplats now are so similar only the silly nitpickers are going to complain. First party support has been close to non existant in the last few years, only severely milking a few franchises to keep the console afloat. It seems that all the majority of Xbox gamers play is shooters. PS3 still maintains excellent first party support and offers a great variety of great games from different genres. That's why more and more people have been going to PS3. All you Xbox sheeps can do now is live in the past and nitpick for the negatives. You have absolutely nothing left.
