This news article content needs the sales numbers of the other consoles to contrast with, as well as the attachment rate or tie ratio. For instance the Wii has outsold both MS and PS3 worldwide with great penetration in europe. But on that, the wii attachment rate is below that of MS and the games that sold the most were the heavily asian, japanese $15 dollar niche games so popular in japan. Sony, who has lag behind for years has now out sold MS in consoles, but has the worst attachment rate of the three.
What has been big news this gen is that sony has done well in EU even though they have come out last in attachment ratio which is how consoles makers make money. Still though EU is considered the best new emerging market which is why I think they will go big before they go home. Microsoft has done really well in attachment ratio in Japan and EU even though their sales of consoles were low. Merchants know that MS can move software and it is becoming the hardcore gamers console of choice for new markets around the world. The wii and nintendo has a ton of money from the wii console sales but did not do as well in software, vendors in EU and USA got burnt it will take alot of good will for Nintendo to repair those ties. As for America, our gaming and development is still the 800lb gorilla in the room, but new large markets like EU, SA, AU mean a lot to console makers, while Japan sadly is in a state of apathy.
If you want to know who won 7th generation it is microsoft and they won it big, with better penetration in emerging markets then they could have hoped for as well as strong adoption of XBL and digital content. While Nintendo came in last. And Sony is in need of a more focused game plan. (hopefully one where its CEOs are not constantly pulling resources and money from its games division to fund bravio tv and hospital equipment development). While the PC market has made great strides because of the exteneded console cycle, if they weather the new console storm for the next couple of years, they will do really well 8th gen. Do not get me wrong - PC share of the gaming market is dwarfed by console but has still made a strong stride. While everyone thinks the PC will dominate the market - well just remember for every gaming pc built in rich america 20 new console gamers are starting in emerging markets abroad. And the profit or licensing fees made on pc software sales are alot lower then consoles.
I think either way it will be a boon for gamers 8th generation and all of the current console makers will be around for 9th, but not sure in what form.
IT's been OVER SEVEN YEARS and only 76 Million? PS2 sold well over that much by this time.
Both Sony and Microsoft are rushing to early to next gen. With the low cost people are willing to pay the games will not be that much different or better. In addition, now with so much pressure on how game violence affects people who play an increase in graphics, for better realistic blood and shredded bodies will only hurt the industry which craves realistic looking violence.
With pads, phones, handheld gaming, Steam box, Onlive, ouya, gamestick, it is incumbent for consoles to decide how they should work and their changing place among all the entertainment choices and what people want from a GAME on a console.
XBOX360 is the best choice for hardcore gamers. i am playing XBOX360 for 6 years. sony is killing itself to shows it`s little black console is selling more but we laugh. MICROSOFT is better in this generation and i am so happy;because sony must learns that we(gamers) choose consoles for games not for names. ^__^
Too bad Microsoft didn't announced their products globally. For example, here in Turkey, Xbox 360 announced itself as an official brand few months ago. It is good but on the other hand it is stupid since next-gen consoles are on the way. Why officially announce a product that was released back in 2005 and a new model is on the way. On the other hand, Sony was known around the world even in the Middle East.
I used to be a Playstation fan, infact I still am. But I know now that PS fans most of them are just stupid people following their friends. They thing just because PS has better graphix that even common games to both consoles in which PS messes up and says still the ps has better graphix than the xbox. I now hate the ps controller xbox is way better including the stupid r1 and r2 buttons and the over sensitive and un ergonomic dualshock analog sticks. I think the xbox controller should be tiny but smaller and have a better d pad but other than that blows the ps away. I am just glad that ps caught up with xbox and I dont care who wins but if ps wins its kinda a shame since the whole world thinks ps is better other than north america.
for all fairness, you get much more 'bang for your buck' if u bought a PS3. because in it's early years (fat PS3) it is sold with a loss. meaning that u get much cheaper hardware compare to it's production cost.
What are the sale figures of these Sony exclusives? How do they stack up against 360 exclusives? PS gamers always seem to shout loud about exclusives but how are the developers creativity really supported? 360 gamers may have less exclusives but we support what we have quite well by BUYING games. You also can compare most games on both systems 360 usually sells more the install base is now similiar. Not bad for a system that was hacked for years despite this it shows we appreciate developers hard labor, so Rockstar jumped ship Naughty dog jumped ship and more will fly across simply because 360 gamers PURCHASE GAMES.
Microsoft can thank the red ring for nearly 30 to 50 percent of those sales. I own one PS3 and two Xbox's (One red ringed and one brand new system that they claim is red ring free.). We will soon see Microsoft. Next gen systems better not be flawed this time.
I want to settle this PC vs Consoles thing with a comprehensive post...
Lets look at a few categories... Graphics, Game Styles, Exclusives, Cost, Convenience, Customisation, Xtra Features
Graphics... Winner... PC
PC definitely has the edge on graphics BUT it must be noted that this comes at a cost, not only does the hardware cost more at various points in the cycle a PC will have to be upgraded to be able to play the latest games and/or with the best graphics i.e. at various points in a consoles lifespan it will beat the PC for graphics (a 7y.o. console playing Halo 4 beats the graphics of a 7 y.o PC playing anything). Also it should be noted that the graphics difference between a console and PC is not huge.
Exclusives... Winner... Tie (good exclusives on all platforms, generally in line with categories above)
PC Exclusives: WOW, Torchlight, Starcraft II, Guildwars II, Diablo 3, Sim City, Total War...
PS3 Exclusives: Uncharted, Last of Us, God of War, Gran Turisimo, Nino Nu Kini...
X360 Exclusives: Halo 4, Gears of War, Forza Motorsport, Fable series...
Cost... Winner... consoles
Convenience... Winner... consoles
Customisation... Winner... PC
Xtra Features... Winner... PC
(Although lets face it everyone will always have a PC anyway so the extra features a "gaming" PC provides over a regular PC are negligible, in which case the winner could be said to be consoles (for foxel, netflix etc)
PC's are better if you mainly like FPS+RTS games or value PC exclusives and have the $/time to keep your rig up to date.
Consoles are better if you like sports/Adventure/Platform/Motion games or value console exclusives and prefer to spend less on your gaming or value convenience.
Result... tie (or depending on personal value placed on sections above)
The only winner in any generation (and I have been playing since 1990), where people like me. People who had them all (sometimes each one at a different time) or at least played on all of them. Anything below playing on all of them, with money not being the issue, is basically being a handicapped fanboy. It's funny this discussion has been going on since 1985, the only thing that seems to change is the participants.
I'm glad they all sell well, and I hope the new generations also keep selling well. And I advise any of you that can, to play on all of them instead of defending any single one of the consoles... See we already have our hands full defending the industry (god bless naive people), consoles/pc against tablets/phones and defending the fact that we like spending most our time playing games. Do we really have time as well to defend our favorite consoles (which honestly is basically a preference in controllers if anything) against the other one?
Well back to playing games instead of talking about corporate sales on Gamespot :)!
I don't care who's winning lol I have both consoles because i can't do gaming without my Halo and i can't go without my Uncharted and GOW. But if I look at it from a business point of view then the 360 is miles ahead of Sony, sorry Sony fanboys it's fact Microsoft are making tons more money than Sony. And I also haven't a clue how Sony can even afford to design and manufacture the next PS4, but even though there in the shit, from a Hardware and software point of view Sony have the upper hand.
My xbox elilte lasted until last week, I never had a problem with any of my Nintendo systems but with this piece of sh!t. I hope MS will not let the 3rl doing it again or go to the hell with this piece of junk.
the difference in consoles sold between the ps3 and Xbox 360 is negligible. But Sony did a good job of catching up to (if not past) the 360, considering it's high launch price, and the fact that the 360 had a year head start. Go, Sony! Xbox is cool, too.
The comments here are always funny. Most of the people complain about the Ms console doesn't even own one and never will, but love to say their friend had a RRod.Give me a break you stupid fan boys who will be sadly dissapointed with the changes that are gonna happen when the next ps comes out.Get ready to pay for online and all the things you said Ms was doing wrong.there is now way in hell the psn is staying free when Sony is bleeding money.
Has the Xbox or PS3 sold the most? Who cares! As long as you're happy with your platform of choice that's all that matters. Your games (and everything connected to your preferred platform) won't get worse because another platform is performing better than the one you play at. I only play PC games and the amount of PC's sold worldwide easily overshadows all consoles combined. Far from everyone uses their PC for gaming or any other stuff you can do with a console, but that's the beauty of it: you can choose to use it for lots of things and/or use it for gaming. My extensive backlog keeps me from getting the newest games(I want to play the old ones first), so I don't even have to upgrade my computer. When I get a new one in like 5 years it will be the same thing all over again, because of all the new games that have been released while I was reducing my backlog.
