Xbox 360 has rocky start at retail

The next-generation console's debut is marked by long lines, stock shortages, parking-lot scalpers, and the occasional success.

by

After years of speculation, months of hype, and a mixed bag of launch titles, the Xbox 360 is now officially on sale across North America. The chaos began on the East Coast mid-Monday, when an armed robber absconded with two units from an EB Games outlet in Virginia.

Later, legal purchasers of the console got their first crack at the console at 12:01 a.m. EST when Best Buy, GameStop, and EB Games opened their doors. Simultaneously, at 9 p.m. PST, the 360 also went on sale at Microsoft's Zero Hour event in the Southern California desert. However, the rest of the West Coast had to wait for various "Midnight Madness" sales.

At one Best Buy in suburban Seattle, Microsoft Chairman and Chief Software Architect Bill Gates showed up to help hand out 360s and engage in several not-so-impromptu Project Gotham Racing 3 sessions. "In the living room itself, Xbox 360 is our centerpiece and a product that redefines what goes on there," Gates told the Associated Press.

But for the vast majority of would-be purchasers, the quest for a 360 had less to do with visionary proclamations and more with rampant inconvenience--as well as the occasional anarchy. Problems were particularly prevalent in the San Francisco Bay Area, where members of the tech-obsessed populace were already lining up outside stores on Monday afternoon. By noon Tuesday, GameSpot staffers who had not preordered Xbox 360s witnessed sellouts of the console at dozens of locations, including Fry's Electronics, Costco, Circuit City, and Game Crazy. At the Toys "R" Us in San Francisco's Richmond district, which quickly ran out of its two-dozen-odd allotment of 360s, a hysterical woman demanded the manager come over to her house on December 25 to explain to her young son why he wasn't getting a Christmas present.

Microsoft's official retail partner for the 360 launch was Best Buy, which has several locations spread around the Bay. By 1 p.m. PST Monday, 35 people had set up camp outside the Santa Rosa Best Buy just north of the town of Sonoma, which expected to receive 190 systems; four hours later there were more than 100 people awaiting the outlet's "Midnight Madness" sale. Farther south in San Carlos, a clerk at Best Buy was already discouraging callers from showing up at the witching hour, saying the crowd outside would soon exceed the store's total allotment of 80 360s. In Rosevile, a throng of 300 customers waited hours, only to find the outlet had a paltry 57 units in stock.

On Tuesday, GameSpot staffers witnessed even more chaotic scenes at the local Target in Colma, on the peninsula south of San Francisco. There, a lone security guard spent most of the night shooing an increasingly unruly crowd away from the parking lot. The situation nearly spun out of control around 7 a.m., when the guard left his post for five minutes, prompting a mass influx of would-be customers eager to receive vouchers good for a 360.

When he returned, the security guard's attempts to get the 100-plus-person crowd to form a line were rebuffed until the arrival of police and a California National Guardsman around 8 a.m. A trio of veteran GameSpotters witnessed the Guardsman quickly take control of the situation and move to the head of the line--where he promptly turned around and asked for a 360 voucher himself. The Guardsman then promptly fled the scene, voucher in hand, leaving police, Target employees, and a visibly agitated crowd to fend for themselves.

Even more underhanded events were afoot at the Target in the East Bay suburb of Pinole. There, voucher-scalping was rampant in the parking lot prior to the store's opening, with some vouchers selling for as much as $300--not including the price of the 360. More enterprising profiteers purchased units and immediately resold them in the parking lot for as much as $800--over $400 more than the higher-end Xbox console's $399 sticker price. By midday, the console was fetching well over $3,000 on eBay.

Many gamers who had planned to avoid the usual platform-day launch bedlam by preordering the Xbox 360 also encountered frustration. One GameSpot staffer was sent a reassuring e-mail saying he was number 35 of the 40 preorders guaranteed at his local EB Games, only to later learn the outlet's allotment had been reduced to just 20 units, leaving him high and dry. Luckily, his subsequent 10-hour vigil outside Best Buy paid off.

Another GameSpot editor who had preordered his unit from Wal-Mart was sent a flurry of confusing e-mails regarding his unbundled, hard drive-equipped Xbox 360 and copy of Project Gotham Racing 3. Within seven hours of receiving his confirmation, the editor got another e-mail saying that both the system and the game had been cancelled. This past Sunday, the editor received an e-mail saying his Xbox 360 had shipped, but that his game order remained canceled. He had not received the unit as of press time.

However, not all Xbox 360 launch-day stories were tales of disappointment. Several attempts to acquire units at Costco and CompUSA were successful, although the latter store had no extra controllers and very few games on hand. A spontaneous visit to the Virgin Megastore in downtown San Francisco saw one buyer grab the last of the 14 360s on hand, thanks to a no-show.

"a hysterical woman demanded the manager come over to her house on December 25 to explain to her young son why he wasn't getting a Christmas present." The manager needs to go round, and say to the kid "No present this year, mom wasn't fast enough." and then leave. It'd be PRICELESS. :D

Some thoughts: "Microsoft is just trying to dominate the market, but they forget that sony has cell technology!" Funny. Throughout the PS2's lifespan, Sony has been saying that it isn't the technology but it is the games. Now that they will be the one with the leg up the technology tree (theoretically, the cell processor hasn't been proven to be the advantage as it is far easier for a processor to run a non-interactive demo than an interactive game), all of a sudden, it's about the techology? "And I hope a lot of independent retailers realize that price gouging is VERY illegal and if someone happened to report it to the Better Business Bureau, they would be screwed big-time." *Shrug* The BBB's enforcement of such things has become almost non-existent especially when it comes to thing like non-essential products. The retailer might get a bad write-up but that is the extent of it. "I can't believe the that lengths to which people will go to get the greedy, materialistic hands on "The hot new thing". Or worse yet, the amount of pathetic parents who spoil their child to the point that they are willing to hand over their paycheck, in fear for their life should they go home without catering to their childs every demand. parents don't understand how to tell their children "no". therefore those children grow up not knowing how to tell themselves "no, i don't need this"." These are the two big points for me. People just don't know how to deny themselves or their children immediate gratification. (Not to sound like an old man but, if I wanted this sort of thing, my parents tended to make me buy the stuff myself. The closest I ever got to launch was the NES which my parents got monthes after it came out.) Honestly, when you're paying premium price to be a hardware beta tester with a very limited library of games (also at premium price), there's something wrong with you. The only reason I came close to a line at PS2 launch is because a friend wanted one and said he had "inside information" on a few that were being sold at Walmart. I got there, saw the line, turned around, and drove off. And, for those who say "It's all M$", one word: PSP. Anyone who thinks that Sony isn't going to do this with the PS3 is living in a fantasy world. (In fact, Nintendo was the only one that avoided both shoddy hardware in their first-gen consoles as well as shortages in their launch). The smart buyers are the ones who are going to realize that they can wait a year after launch, take that year to beat/wrap up all the games on their current consoles that are currently still unbeaten, and THEN buy hardware that has had the bugs worked out with a decent library at prices that do not qualify as "insane".

360 will stop kissing my a** when Halo3 heads out..Their on, it will be reasonable for me to get the system. Else then that, Gates went from a "hero bastard", to "greedy bastard"!

Is it just me or does this just scream flagrant disregard of customers on Microsoft's part? In other words, is it just me or is this just typical of Microsoft? Manufacturing a shortage is a sleazy enough marketing tactic as it is, as it basically boils down to abusing the consumers' optimism in order to create arftificial hype, but when it's this extreme, to the point where huge amounts of stores don't even have enough to fill their preorders, and scalping prices are in the neighborhood of a 1000% markup, it's just sickening. At one point, I was planning on getting a 360, because the allure of the system caused even me to consider buying it. Then they announced their core and premium packaging prices, as well as the accessory prices, and I remembered why I hated Microsoft in the first place. Their entire pricing plan revolves around inducing you into buying the Premium package, but at the same time they are able to brag that they launched for less money than the PS3. And now the manufactured shortage. This is also the reason I've come to respect Microsoft's competitors by comparison, because they don't charicteristically try to manipulate you like Microsoft does. Seeing pictures of the monolithic power brick and hearing stories of 360's crashing also reminds me of the other reason I hate Microsoft.

Ok, I have to say that those who would resort to violence/theft for a new system - regardless of what it is - have got to be considered more than a little unhinged. Second, does no one realize that the current crop of consoles are in the last year or so of their prime, can be picked up for half or even a third of the price of a 360, and can be outfitted with games of only the highest quality without even batting an eye? Try this: one 360 premium system - really, the only way to go - plus an extra controller and a couple games will run around 550 bucks. At the same time, you could get a brand new PS2 or XBOX with a couple controllers and a bunch of AAA-quality titles for far, far less than that. Hell, a person clamouring for a 360 probably already has a system so they could stock up on the best games coming out for the holiday season (too many to count) on current consoles and then play yourself silly while waiting comfortably until the 360s are more plentiful and actually have something worth playing. Plus, you have the added bonus of no launch day/holiday season headache; And, of course, no felony conviction for robbing a store due to shortages... =D

I work at a Gamestop nearby. We were supplied with only 12 units, but had plenty of people camped outside. We locked our doors because we knew that tonight was the perfect night to be robbed. At around 11:45, we let in a group of teenagers eager to check on the systems. They told us that they had skipped school that day and had been waiting in the parking lot for 12 straight hours getting ready to get the 360. we laughed and told them to show us their ID so they could get their voucher. They said "Naw, man, we didn't preorder, we're just picking one up." The poor guys hadn't known about the shortage and were sent away before the first 12 preorder guys arrived.

parents don't understand how to tell their children "no". therefore those children grow up not knowing how to tell themselves "no, i don't need this". now we have $3000 xbox consoles on ebay that people are actually buying. do they not realize that they can get a smoking pc or even a semi-decent car for that price? i play video games too much because, frankly, i love them, but waiting more than 30 minutes for anything is work in my book. therefore someone should be paying me for my time, not the other way around. at the risk of sounding rude, those of you who waited 10+ hours for a shiny new system and still didn't get one, and even those that did, are all morons of the highest order. i think the gene pool would be much cleaner without idiocy like this running rampant.

Has anyone else heard of poor product quality issues? I went to my local EB and started chatting up the store manager, and he told me to wait until the bugs are worked out of the 360 because over 50% of all units sold, (at least in his store), have been returned due to various hardware issues. Anyone else heard about this? At any rate, I'm going to wait for Christmas 06 when the PS3, 360, and Revolution are out and fighting for our hard earned dollars, that way I can pickup each system at a fraction of the price, and have a ton of good games to play.

Pitiful, Pitiful, Pitiful. Good thing people in Hawaii arent all crazy about midnight relases 4 games. There were only like 20 of us there and the store had about 40 in-stock. of course the next day a mob of rampageing mom's came a runnin to the store when the mall door's opened. I nearly escaped with my life makeing a dashing run for cover to the borders next door which(not suppriseingly) had no people in it. Around 5ish there was only 1 system left and 2 people came in at the exact same time to get it. The 2 feller's nearly had a fist fight. 1 man's woman stoped him from fighting, the other made off with a brand spankin new, fresh off the grill, still warm from the factory Xbox360. Incase u were wondering how i no all this, i work at the mall and i get all the inside scoop on all the shady deals goin down.

the only reason I would buy this piece of crap is to sell it on eBay for 3 times what the retail price is. dont know what the big deal about this system is. then again i am a sony fanboy so ha! but hey my friend only bought one for 300 bucks and then sold it for 700. hes not a big fanboy of anything so no reason to get this piece o crap. I would also like to convince anyone that the PS3 will be better then this thing. so pm me if u want to become a believer. =P

This can't even be considered a launch, when it's not available to the general public (those who actually have school/work and don't want to wait in a line for 12 hours) until weeks or months later. Ridiculous.

maybe someone mentionned it but well I guess that I will... the x360 is better than the Ps3 hardware wise .. if you have questions feel free to pm. I am not an x box fan boy or ps fan boy or nintendo fan boy... I don't care... I can afford it so I buy all systems.

As we all know, many people have had problems with their xbox in the past. For example, Out of my 8 friends who have an xbox, 3 of them have their dvd players broken while another had white dots appearing all over his screen during gameplay. This might have been the effect of mass producing all the xbox 1's in 2001. Thus, in Microsoft producing less xbox's than they should. This should lead to less people having problems with their xbox 360 in the next 2-5 years. Please someone agree or disagree.

I'm just waitn until christmas to get mine. The price might not drop by then, but maybe they will have bundles that come with a game or two. Plus then, there will be more good games out that will give consumers a reason to by a 360. Microsofts' launch lineup was pretty good, but nothing truly next-gen except for maybe PGR 3. Next year I'm sure we'll see some truly next -gen games like Gears of War or Halo 3. Damn, I can't wait until Halo 3 comes out. I'm gettin that for sure.

People are stupid and insane. I simply can't imagine anyone being so greedy and so willing to prey on others that they would buy a 360, and then immediately resell it out in the parking lot for more money. And anyone who's buying $3,000 360s on EBay needs to be put in a home--they obviously don't have the intelligence necessary to make logical decisions.

Hey insane956dv... Yeah so I checked your games collection via your profile. Not that impressed. Where are all your games for every console ever invented? Don't make up stuff just because you are a lamer and didn't plan ahead like the rest of us. By the way, the 360 is a great system with loads of potential. The only problem right now is there are not many good games to be played on the damn thing. Gamespot has done a great job at reviewing the launch titles and my reviews are pretty much spot-on with the editor's. If you have a 360, I recommend: 1) Call Of Duty 2 2) Perfect Dark: Zero 3) Project Gotham Racing 3 4) Madden NFL 06 5) Tiger Woods 2006 6) NBA 2K6 Fairly rounded out collection to get started, altough the $60 price tag on some of those might necessitate some trade-ins and what-not. Anyway, I will be reviewing these games in my profile space, so stop by soon if you would like to read more. Out.

Smartiepants you really are one, and a dumba** at that. There are like 3 games with under 70% rating and the average score is like a 75% so don't bullsh** people with those lies to make the launch lineup seem better than it really is.

to blingmasta201 and _SlipknotiCX_ i feel sad for both of you. to bling, yes the N64 had a pretty good launch lineup but unlike microsofts xbox360 90% of the games were not strait ports of old games. To slip, you are just as obsessed as those people, ordering something that early in advance, anyway i, like most sensible people, will wait 2-3 years for a consoles price to drop and during the time i would just play it at my friends house or play with the last generations consoles and get games for it at(good games) bargin bin prices.

SomeoneElse292 stated "there is a "shortage" of xbox 360s to build up hype" and he exactly right there will be tons of 360's out before christmas it is a huge stunt just 2 get people riled up so that everyone will buy one for chirstmas, it'll prolly work 2 cause american people are way 2 stupid, i'm waiting for ps3 though

It is absolutely rediculous that Microsoft could not fill the demand they created. Well done Mr. Gates, well done. You know, here in Florida we stand in line for plywood, water, bread, ice, generators, batteries and whatnot when a friggin hurricane approaches. I certainly will not wait in line for a luxury item. Microsoft srewed all the people that were loyal to them on the xbox, should I get an xbox 360 by any chance sometime soon I swear I will never ever buy a game from Microsoft game studios, I know it doesn't make much of a difference if one person does that, but then again even Microsoft does business on person at a time.

I love how the PS fanboys try to make this all seem so negative. 1st of all Microsoft said there would be shortages because their launching in all three territories in a matter of weeks. When SONY had rampant shortages of the PS2 I bet they just waited it out. I remember seeing a guy pay $1500 for a PS2 in a bidding war at a Game Express by Penn Station. The runner-up paid $980 for a Japanese PS2. Everyone else left mad trying to find somewhere else to find one. Yet many people have PS2's now. I was lucky to get my 360. I waited out in front of K-Mart who only received 32. 8 of those were sold to employees before we were even let into the store. If I couldn't get a 360 premium I was just going to wait until the next shipment came and try my luck. Everyone is blaming Microsoft for this but you can't because they warned everyone this would happen. When the PS2 launched they never warned of a shortage, and many complained yet still bought one. The retail stores should be at fault for selling preorders before they really new how many they were going to receive. How do you sell preorders the day after E3? If the PS2 launch was great, this one is stellar.

oh well...how funny everything looks from the eyes of a foreigner...(do not take my words as irony against anyone bc it isn't so) I have lived (and loved) in the US and moved back again to Spain, where I forsee the same shortage of consoles as in the US (360 to be launched Dec 2). I understand that kids here had to be granted all they want or they'll be sent to a therapist by their parents (who I bet need it the most) but be immerse in a rollercoaster of permanent "black friday" or ending up paying $800 for an xbos 360 goes way beyong reasonable. how are we going to educate kids on the value of $ if some parent is willing to pay twice the price of something just because thye had the money for it??? I'm not trying to critizice videogames here (I love them) and I have played them since I had a spectrum 48k (yeah, 98% of people don't even know what I'm talking about). I have a snes, play1,gameboy, play2, and will most certainly get a next-gen console for myself, but at any price or camping overnight at any mall...no way!!! can't we play with damm good play2 or xbox for just a little time before you get a new one without going to billy cristal's psycho-analisys room??? sooo,if we all video game lovers put some little sense in what we do, we wouldn't have to listen to bluff blames againt this industry, everyother day, for being violent, racist, sexist, obscene and just enjoy them as what they are G-A-M-E-S. People shouldn't really worry about the shortage.Microsoft's 360 were rush very quickly meaning poor quality, buying one at launch is very riskly due to all of the error that are going on but most likely the sencond wave will actually be tested. I feel sorry for people that are willing to spend thousands of dollars to get their hands on a 360 that probaly a piece of crap. I like microsoft more than sony but who else is disappointed by the crappy launch titles, espically from EA games. god i hate them...no offense.

Just because all allotments sold out doesn't meant it did well. I know if I preordered a system months ago, just to find out the day before I'm supposed to receive it that it won't be available, I'm asking for my money back. There was more than enough time to inform retailers that the number of systems they needed (IE preorders, not extras to sell to late bloomers) would not be available. Microsoft thinks they can bully the gaming market like they do with the PC. But most people need Windows and it's lengthy list of updates; they can (and will) wait for a game system.
