Xbox 360 Elite: What You Need to Know

The $479 Xbox 360 Elite will join the $299 Xbox 360 Core and the $399 Xbox 360 Premium as Microsoft's high-end console offering.

by

The video game industry's worst kept secret is finally out. Microsoft has today announced that it's adding the Xbox 360 Elite to its current console lineup. The $479 Xbox 360 Elite will join the $299 Xbox 360 Core and the $399 Xbox 360 Premium as Microsoft's high-end console offering. The Elite will be a permanent addition to the Xbox 360 lineup, not a limited-edition offering as rumors have speculated.

UPDATE: The Xbox 360 Elite's pricing has now been confirmed for the UK. You can find details here.

Microsoft has equipped the new Xbox with a 120GB hard drive and an HDMI port to make the 360 comparable to the PlayStation 3. The Xbox 360 Elite won't be replacing either of the current models, mostly because its advanced feature set is designed to appeal to enthusiasts and early adopters--the two consumer groups willing to spend more than $399 on a game console.

System Comparison

We've put together a comparison table to show you the differences between all three Xbox 360 console packages.

Xbox 360 EliteXbox 360 PremiumXbox 360 Core
Price$479$399$299
FinishBlack w/ chrome trimWhite w/ chrome trimWhite w/ plain trim
Hard drive120GB20GBNone
ControllerWireless, blackWireless, whiteWired, white
Xbox Live HeadsetYesYesNo
HDMI portYesNoNo
HDMI cableYesNoNo
Composite AV cableYesYesYes
Component HD AV cableYesYesNo
Ethernet cableYesYesNo

The entry-level Core system offers just enough to play games. It comes with the base console and a wired controller, but it only has composite AV cables and doesn't have a hard drive or headset. The Xbox 360 Premium system comes with a 20GB hard drive, a wireless controller, HD component AV cables, and a headset. The Core and Premium systems can only output 1080p movies through a special VGA cable, but some 1080p displays have HDMI inputs instead of VGA. Component video is capped at 1080i for motion picture content.

The Xbox 360 Elite has a 120GB hard drive and a new HDMI port that supports 1080p movie playback. The larger hard drive lets console owners store more games and HD video content downloaded from Xbox Live Marketplace. Note that the Elite system does not have a built-in HD-DVD player, which is somewhat puzzling since even the basic $499 PlayStation 3 comes with a Blu-ray drive.

Aside from the hard drive and HDMI differences, Microsoft has told GameSpot that the underlying hardware in all three models remains the same. We're all going to have to wait a little while longer for that smaller, cooler CPU design.

Accessories

The Xbox 360 Elite has a new black and chrome color scheme, and the package includes a matching black wireless controller and headset. Additional black, wireless controllers will retail for $49. Microsoft will also sell black Xbox 360 Play & Charge kits and Xbox 360 rechargeable accessories separately for $19 and $11, but it doesn't have any plans to offer black versions of other popular accessories such as the Xbox Live Vision camera or the Xbox 360 HD-DVD player.

Upgrade Options

Microsoft will also offer the 120GB detachable hard drive as a stand-alone upgrade for existing Xbox 360 owners. The $179 drive will come with a data transfer cable to make it easy for console owners to move data from their old 20GB drive to the new 120GB drive. Expect 20GB hard drive prices to fall as people put their old drives up for sale.

Transferring hard drive information will be a little more complicated for people planning to move from the Xbox 360 Premium to an Xbox 360 Elite since a lot of Xbox Marketplace content is tied to your Xbox Live profile and the console you're using at the time of purchase. That means console owners will have trouble using a data-transfer cable to copy all the downloaded content from an existing 20GB system to a completely new Elite system. Once you switch systems, the only way to get at that content will be to log into Xbox Live with the account that you used to make the original purchase. Other accounts on the new system won't be able to access the downloaded content. Microsoft is working on a solution to the Premium-to-Elite data transfer issue and told GameSpot that it will release more information as we get closer to launch.

The Xbox 360 Elite system, black accessories, and stand-alone 120GB hard drive upgrade will all be available in retail on April 29, 2007.

The xbox 360 elite is a great console despite i got a ps3, i think it will sell more and more to come because of its great hard drive capacity its versatile accessories and support for full HD, if we compare it to the ps3 i think the ps3 will win because it has a glossy finish, a lineup of colours for the controllers and many online features like streaming videos on bbc player and not to mention MLB.TV.

After sending my 360 premium to Tex-ass a dozens times for repairs from getting the "Red Ring of Death" and yet still not repaired currectly. I went to Gamestop and traded in for the Elite,(even tho they charged me $40 for repairs for my old one) and I'm pleased with what came in the box. Plus it came with Halo ODST and Forza Motorsports and a $50 gift card, all for $278.00. I recommed on getting the elite, Your better off.

They need to update this page. The Elite doesn't come with an HDMI cable anymore, the "Premium" became the Pro before it was discontinued and the Core became the Arcade and comes with a wireless controller (and built-in 512MB of memory). p.s. And all the prices are no longer correct.

I'll probbly get one in either jan or february of 2010. It all depends if I think it's worth it or not. BTW Gamespot needs to update this page. They got rid of the pro and the only thing that is left is the arcade and the elite. The elite now costs $299 and the arcade now costs $199. The arcade now has an HDMI port.

I had my elite for two months and got the three rings of death, which we all know is a simple overheat problem. They don't seem to use enough thermal paste when they build them or the unit itself has a cooling issue. It wouldn't be bad if the boxes were easy to take apart so you could fix the problem yourself, but you loose your machine for a month and a half while Microsoft fixes it for you. Anyway at the price of these units you would expect them to last longer than two months before needing repair. I hear the XBox 720 will be out next year......on and on it goes.

yes, there's a charger for the controller.it's called play & charge kit, you plug a cable on the controller and conect to the xbox to charge the battery.

The infos are inaccurate, i bought the Elite, but it doesnt comes with the HDMI cable (it has the port of course) you have to buy that cable!! You also have to buy a second controller if you want HD gaming with your budies! Anyways, at least the Elite will never get the RROD!

I have not personally played the XBox, but from what I have heard is that reliability has been greatly improved by Microsoft, especially with the Elite. I am preparing to take the plunge with the Elit. It's been years since I've played on a game console, but the tech specs for PC games confinues up, up and away, and I'm tired of being broke all the time trying to keep up. PC gaming is fast becoming a form of enternaiment for the super rich.

Bought my Elite in December, haven't regretted it. Once you go black, you don't go back.

If my xbox breaks again i am getting a elite without hesitation. and for ali-009, you say that microsoft should o make a better console that can compete with the ps3. Stop showing your ignorance. The xbox 360 has sold way more copies than the ps3. Also, you ask if microsoft can compete with the ps3's online. In doing so you show your ignorance yet again. The playstaion network has been trying to catch up with xbox live for years. They have copied almost everything microsoft started first,( arcade games, down loadable movies, achievements ect.) What you should have asked is can microsoft make a console that doesn't break ever 3 months and make it last like a ps3 can.

I have had 3 Xbox 360's with the RROD but luckily was able to get my money back with the third console failure. I then brought a Playstation 3 and have had no problems with it for over a year. What I am looking for is a stable Xbox system. A system that gives me peace of mind. If this is old information than MS should update it so we are better informed about any changes to their hardware system. They are losing out in the number of sales they could have.
