Xbox 360 Elite price cut official; Arcade goes up in price

Following similar news in the US, Microsoft has announced a complete reshuffle of its Xbox 360 hardware lineup in the UK. The most welcome change is the Xbox 360 Elite price cut to £199.99, which is a reduction of £30 from its previous price point of £229.99. The Elite is the flagship model in the console lineup, as it's bundled with a 120GB hard drive. The price cut will take effect from tomorrow, August 28--just in time for the Bank Holiday weekend and four days before the launch of the new PS3 Slim console.

While the Xbox 360 Elite sees a price drop, the Xbox 360 Arcade will jump in price by £20, from £139.99 to £159.99. This is in stark contrast to the US, where the Arcade model has remained at its previous price point of $199.99.

Questioned about the matter, Microsoft responded: "We have not made upward adjustments to the trade price of consoles before. A modest increase on the trade price of Xbox 360 Arcade consoles [in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa] allows us to offset exchange rate fluctuations and changes in local market conditions while still offering the most affordable console on the market."

The Xbox 360 Pro bundle, which included a 60GB hard drive, will now be discontinued, leaving just the Elite and Arcade models going forward.

free online yeah but its not as good as live. live is less than a £1 a day. for a great service. xbox live is cheaper than anything you pay for monthly. live has an invite system and voice chat with up to 8 people and lots of quality features that just are not there with psn. ok psn has voice chat but i don't think you can be in voice chat with anyone playing a different game. i don't think psn has anything like the live party system or even a decent invite system to invite your friends to games. the paying for live should not even be an issue but then i have to remember that the world is full of cheaps that expect everything for free. what it should come down to is what you want to play. i have an xbox because i want to play halo, gears and left 4 dead. another person might want to play god of war and killzone so for them it would be a ps3. i am gonna stick with the xbox i might pick up a ps 3 if they bring yakuza 3 out in the uk inless of course sega put it on xbox and save me from doing so.

@waggy79 - spot on. But people don't seem able to understand that. No matter how much sense it makes. This, however, is a poor move by MS. It surely makes sense to phase out the Arcade and have the 60GB as the entry level model, even if it means leaving it at it's current price. Thought they had this kind of thing down by now. Deary me. I had a chance to pick up the PS3 Slim the other day. It's sleek. And looks alot more like a blu-ray player now, something that'd actually fit on your stand. I'm tempted, but it's alluring features for me are it's blu-ray player, and internet-browsing features alone. The only games I can imagine playing are LBP and Metal Gear. But for those two, a decent blu-ray player and the ability to watch videos and other content on the net on my lovely big TV is certainly drawing. Will see what happens eh.

infestedcyborg1 i couldnt agree more :D i like both consoles but with 360 you pay for wireless adaptor and online, also it has had a lot of hardware failures, as the ps3 is free online built in wifi and less hardware failures. but im not a fanboy i enjoy both consoles i had a 360 for 3 years it broke, so i will have a go on the ps3 side for now, but i will never go wii, i dont like mario and stuff since the gameboy.

so what should I sell my Wii for? a ps3 slim, or a 360 elite?

I think it is silly for them to put the price up though, even though I don't think it'll make any difference to it's sales, since it's still rediculiously cheap.

yeah "thenephariouson" The Arcade always had HDMI, it was the 360 "basic"which had absolutly nothing, MS realised that not having HD on a next Gen console was stupid, so they replaced it with arcade :)

Still not nearly enough of a reduction to make it worthwhile. Best off buying a PS3 slim.

I've heard that MS are likely to release a 250GB Forza 3 bundle, how true this is will remain to be seen.

@topjolly, Apologies, i was led to believe it didnt, maybe the early versions. fair enough.

topjolly

The 'Arcade' does have HDMI output.

thenephariouson
thenephariouson

I only wish MS would allow content to be stored on external drives, this would make most of these models irrelevant, as the only main difference between these units is simply the HDD size, oh and the 'Arcade' doesnt have an HDMI output. They really need to address this in the 'next gen', this will be a factor in determining which console i choose.

Amazes me people still harp on about the price of 360 online. You pay (£25 if you shop around) for a better service. Why do they charge for Warcraft? so they can keep paying staff to constantly improve it. Its not rocket science.

Just afew days ago you could buy an x360 arcade for £90 new using a discount code online!.And who would be mad enough to buy a Wii? Its still £180 in the UK, and considering most people buy it in a bundle taking the price £200+ its a damn disgrace. The GC was £130 on release in the UK, the Wii which is running on pretty much the same hardware is so much more, and has so little to offer IMO. Nintendos first party line up just is not frequent enough with quality true non party games, the Wii's best games are all just rehashes of games released on other systems, and often inferior. Resi 4, please, as good as it is its old. Mario kart double dash and ssmb melee were better on cube, and re releasing GC games but with enhanced Wii features is a joke. Nintendo has a very second rate online service. It cannot play DVDs. The list goes on and on, but still people will flock to the shops like the ignorant sheep they are. If it were £100 or less then fair enough, but it isnt.

£199 not bad but to take it online will still cost you more than a ps3. Wireless £59.99 12month sub £39.99 ps3 £249 free online wireless out the box and blu ray and internet browser. Ps3 IS the better option. made my job in Game alot more fun

LoL MS puts the price up on the arcade model?? shouldn't they discontinue the arcade model and jus have the pro and elite consoles?? I feel sorry those guyz out there who's 360's that have broke down more then once...shame on you MS!!!!!!!

oh wat do you know microsoft trying to get as much money out of this "price cut" as possible. smooth move MS i hope your console fails!!!!! im not a ps3 fanboy bye the way or even a wii fanboy... i own a pc. had an xbox, broke(after my warrante ran out). i give up on the xbox now. you could buy a ps3 for 20 more squids than this and why boost the arcade price. this news makes me mad to think about it.

Can someone show me a price cut? Because all I see is the cheapest model getting more expensive, and the Elite costing a mere £20 less than the blu-ray playing, wireless enabled, free network servicing, and I THINK more energy efficient PS3 slim? I just know a better deal when I see one and in terms of VALUE, the PS3 wins hands down.

Chrysus The news of this price cut getting nowhere near as much attention as the news of the PS3's... ************************************************************************ The attention won't truly happen until the day after Thanksgiving. I believe there are more gamers who want to play Halo ODST, Forza 3 and Left 4 Dead 2 then gamers who want to play Ratchet and Clank, Uncharted 2 and Demon Souls. People will buy systems for the new games coming out and the cheaper price of the system.

Mega-FX
Mega-FX

How exactly can you consider this a price cut? The Elite now costs as much as the pro did, while a 60gb hard drive is more than enough and they discontinue that model, so you can't get an Xbox 360 cheaper this way. To be short, nothing has changed at all.

Keitha313

Nobody cares about a price cut of a Xbox 360 because most ppl have already bought themself one whilst they have got a PS3 this wont change anything PS3 will sell more in Xmas mark my words.

yeah I've worked out a 2nd hand plus 1 wireless controller plus network adapter and 12 month gold + 20gb is £199 . But to get my e74 console fixed and the same equipment is £160. Mind you i could fix the heatsink myself and probably end up burning my house down.

Avenger1324 Your wrong, The cheapest option ISNT to splash 200 on an elite, but buy a pre-owned Pro. I have Seen ones Under £120.

@ raverrozza. The Arcade is the most popular, because it is the cheapest, by far now, since the pro has been discontinued. and like BladeTrinity114 said, i have a 60 gig pro. and i still have no intention whatsoever in buying an elite.

Avenger1324
Avenger1324

Not that great for new buyers, as the Arcade still isn't worth getting - you simply NEED to have a harddrive to get the most out of your 360, and now the cheapest/only option is to splash 200 on an Elite. As an owner of a 20GB I just wish they would drop the price of the harddrive so I could upgrade to either 60 or 120GB. I just don't fancy paying close to the cost of an Arcade (old prices) for just a harddrive, when the cost of the laptop harddrive is so much cheaper.

BladeTrinity114
BladeTrinity114

I have a 60GB premium and have no plans to get an Elite because I find it cool that I now have a discontinued model :D

"Actually Gamespot has an article where a company bought 1000 PS3's, XBOX360's, and Wii's and did the test. 54% XBOX360 failure rate, 10% PS3, and 8% wii's." Don't be an idiot. They didn't buy any consoles. It was a magazine who asked 5000 random subscribers about their hardware failures. For all we know half of the people who said their Xbox failed could be PlayStation fanboys trying to make it look bad. NOTE: I do realise the 360 has a high failure rate, but that survey was one of the worst I have ever encountered...

raverrozza
raverrozza

dedodido how is the arcade the most popular model? surely the premium/pro was the most popular model... that said it makes a good choice. elite or pay ps3 with blu ray. i still think the ps3 is better value esp if you are gonna be using wireless connection but its no way black and white. itll be def down to the individual as they are both great deals!

Have Microsoft decided they want to give Sony a fair chance or something? Putting a price BOOST on their most popular console just as Sony bring out a new sleeker and cheaper iteration of theirs is nothing other than a monumental mistake. Just hope I don't get RROD any time soon...

That 54% fail rate is from an article about a survey carried out by Game Informer, you can find the article here: http://uk.gamespot.com/news/6215590.html It was based on 5000 subscribers, there is nothing that confirms those people own the actually console or if there was even a close split between the three consoles. For example they could have asked 4500 360 owners, 300 PS3 owners and 200 Wii owners, increasing the chances for skewed figures. The results of these 54% from 5000 are then applied to the 30 million units. So in contrast it does not give an accurate account. I am sure that the 360 does have a high failure rate but unless you did a survey of the full 30 million console owners you would not get a truly accurate result.

They must be out of their bloody minds! You could buy a Pro for £159 at some places! Now the cheapest non-gimped version is £200. What a bunch of idiots! Glad I got mine when I did.

@wez 316 I am afraid I disagree. I do not see how this will be a ough holiday season for MS. If anything I think the latest price cuts and will just continue Sony's uphill struggle. It maybe a better peice of hardware but I do not think it has "far more features", it has blu-ray and thats about it. I find myself downloading more movies in HD and standard through Xbox Live then I do watching Blu-ray movies. I think if MS had not cut the prices Sony would be in a great position to increase its user base but now I think they are in the same position as always. Most expensive than and only a blu-ray player to set them apart.

I must have Dejavu as I am sure that I have read this board three times in the last couple of weeks. No wait they were 3 seperate boards just the same content. Either it's PS3 fanboys having a go at the X-box over the 54% fail rate or X-Box fan boys having a go at the PS3 over sales in the East. Stop arguing about consoles and comment on the article.

Microsoft just got trigger happy with the price cuts in the early days and now it is coming back to bite them. At the current price point at least you are swapping out a memory card for a 120gb hard drive at a £40 increase, rather than a £100 increase. Overall the pricing between the SKUs is much more sensible, but there will be backlash because the £160 pro was such a better deal than even a £200 Elite for most people. I think the reasoning for increasing the price on the core was because at the old price it made the Elite look awful. At the old retail prices you would pay an extra £100 for a 120gb hard drive. That just seems totally ridiculous. With 60gb also there for £160, this made the Elite come across of an even worse deal because you could get a system that did everything the Elite did for £70 less. Keeping the core at £130 would have meant people would be paying £70 for access to a hard drive, which still is a huge rip off. I'm not saying £200 for the Elite system is unreasonable though. Not at all. I think it's a fine price point for what you get. This doesn't change the fact though that Microsoft's previously aggressive pricing strategy on the Arcade and Pro has made many consumers ideas of a good 360 deal to be unrealistic given their current manufacturing costs. Add in the fact that the PS3 is unquestionably a better piece of hardware than the Elite with far more features and it just might be a tough holiday season for Microsoft this year.

I'm tempted to get a Ps3 now that theres been price cuts cause there are some exclusive games I wanna play. My xbox has started being funny lately too, still works though. Ive just played xbox for so long now that I cant play the Ps3 properly, feels like I'm playing a Ps2 based on a 360. I prefer the 360 style too (not just how the console looks, but the dashboard and everything), maybe round christmas though, MGS4 is just too tempting.

That just makes no sense! Phasing out the Pro! Oh well glad I got a PS3 now anyway! Less option = less confusion
