Xbox 360 controllers, accessories won't work on Xbox One

Microsoft confirms that only Xbox One controllers and accessories are supported on next-gen console; Kinect requirement explained.

Microsoft has confirmed over Twitter that only Xbox One controllers and accessories will be supported on the next-generation platform. The Xbox 360 controllers and accessories players already own will not work on the new platform.

"To deliver consistent, meaningful gameplay to all users, only Xbox One controllers/accessories work w/Xbox One," Microsoft said.

This is not much of a surprise, as the Xbox One boasts a redesigned and updated controller, as well as a next-generation version of the Kinect sensor.

Microsoft also has addressed the Xbox One's Kinect requirement. In a Q&A blog post, the company said it is requiring Kinect with every Xbox One because the technology is "essential" to the next-generation platform.

"The all new Kinect is now an essential and integrated part of the platform," Microsoft said. "By having it as a consistent part of every Xbox One, game and entertainment creators can build experiences that assume the availability of voice, gesture and natural sensing, leading to unrivaled ease of use, premium experiences and interactivity for you."

they will release an ADAPTER, so you will be able to connect your old xbox 360 stuff.

Please support wired Xbox 360 controllers on the Xbox One, you won't really loose anything like that, since most people only has the wireless. But people with stearingwheels and fightsticks would get something out of it, and all that is bought from 3rd part companys anyway.

It would REALLY make a big difference for people with "wheels or sticks" since those types of controllers are really expensive and for both of them there's also a lot of people making their own mods to them. So it would save people a lot of money and time, and it would help you guys sell more games because people don't have to use  an extra 200-400$ on controllers they basically already have.

Hope you read this and really think about it.

Thanks a lot for bringing back Killer Instinct to us, and thanks for listening to the community about the DRM!

Figures... they worked really hard to make the controllers a tiny bit different so they had a reason to make you buy new ones without feeling ripped off.

It didn't work.

even more reason to wait for the next gen till next year I will pick both consoles up but I need to save the 1,000-1500 I need for both systems, games, and a headset yay me

"To deliver consistent, meaningful gameplay to all users, only Xbox One controllers/accessories work w/Xbox One,"

So that we can force you to buy all new accessories instead of saving money and using old ones.

Also, "having (Kinect) as a consistent part of every Xbox One" and "premium experiences" should never have been used in the same sentence.

Also a true gamer knows when he/she is getting ripped off by a juggernaut company that targets a white bread family brain washed by the media. This company deserves no defense and is a disgrace to be part of the gaming community.

It's gonna feel weird playing Watch Dogs on a Xbox one.

Uh oh, what is going to happen to the PC gaming community if 360 controllers are not going to be produced?  I loved that the industry lined up behind the 360 controller as almost a standard! :(

Of course the 360 controllers wont work with the new system. Are the people who think this is news really that stupid?

I'm sorry but I just want to play good games. I don't need "essential" crap and I don't want to throw away my working controllers for new controllers.

I don't think it's worth buying a next gen console now. Maybe 3 years after release.

I can't wait for Razor to come out with some awesome accessories. And knowing the Razor and looking at the Xbox One- the accessories will look better than the console. Fact.

I have never and perhaps will never understand why they are so intend on forcefeeding Kinect down our throats.  What part of "most of us don't give a damn about that ****" don't they understand???

As far as the controller thing goes, it's not a shock.  They want you to have to buy 4 more new controllers for the system and no doubt they'll overcharge for them just as they have with every other xbox accessory before them.

Again, I say people laughed at me when I said that MS could out EA EA any day of the week.  People need to understand that MS has FORGOTTEN more about how to screw people than EA has ever known.  As bad as the EA's and Activisions' of the world may be, MS is like Yoda in comparison to them.  I knew this all along, but people seem to have forgotten it or just never realized it until now.

Never played fighting games on 360, only ps3. Besides the d-pad sucking on 360, the placement of it seems to be harder to fluidly do the motions on. It seems better on ps3's controller. What do people think?

It's starting to seem innovative if you can have the "old" technology to work with the new.

Gamers are people who talk smack to each other and sit in front of a TV playing a game till they master it smelling like an old hobo surrounded by empty pizza boxes and discarded Chinese container of Shrimp Fried Rice and angry family members telling you to get off the system or calling in sick for days to stay at home and play with your buddy's online playing Halo or COD. We played this game in cramped quarters and dark room holes till our knuckles could take no more , this dungeon became our cave and our place to do battle and connect with all of our online friends. This seems like it's coming to an end with the Xbox None I mean One. This has nothing to do with Gamers and all to do with keeping TV alive at the experience of  those who built up the company. We proudly stood by spending our money. This was our digital crack! We would rob, steal.... or beg to get the latest game when it came out and bury ourselves in the world of that game. The New Unit is an ugly joke and I want to wake up from this Nightmare on Microsoft St. to end. TV is what we played our games on not what we turned our system on to watch. Technology can only grow as far as the mind that creates it. Too many old thinking, non-playing, shareholder ass kissing, troglodytes running the company that the real people who fell in love with and have come to enjoy the Xbox as the TRUE Gamer system have no voice there anymore. So hold your Xbox tight, play your games with your friends and realize that the end of true gamer life is coming to an end. So turn on your COD kill some friends and knife them from behind and laugh as you hear their last words now while you can. Because the next thing we will hear is Microsoft doing the same thing to us soon enough.

I am not going out and rush to buy Xbox one or PS4, I rather wait to see how well both will perform before putting money down on any of them. They are both hyping their product and they may not even live up to the hype.

DarkReign2552

Not really concerned with the 360 controller not working on the Xbox One so much as the presence of 3rd party controllers. Usually they're complete crap, but sometimes 3rd party controllers are a necessity. On my PS3, I use a 3rd party controller shaped like a 360 controller because of the superior triggers and joystick positioning. My 360 I use 2 3rd party controllers along with my 2 original when I'm boosting achievements online.

My biggest concern is that the new controller looks uncomfortable to hold. The grips are thinner and pushed out a further angle than the 360 controller. It's almost like a PS3 controller, which we all know are super uncomfortable to use.

Jyakotu

I think this is mostly a non issue seeing as how the Xbox 360 controllers probably don't have the current technology to be compatible with the Xbox One.

No surprise here. It also would surprise me if the PS4 did the same thing.

Since when could you use controllers from a previous generation on the new one?
Anyone that cares about this or sounds bitter is just grabbing at anything to bitch about.

Oh yea because those feedback responses on those triggers is.... super essential. It would make using a 360 controller for a second player impossible

so basically nothing xbox 360 will work on xbox one. no game no dlc no arcade no controllers NOTHING.

so with accessories, does that mean that the bluetooth headset of the 360 doesnt work either? Why, bluetooth is bluetooth.......man. Its starting to look like Nintendo where you need to buy more and more to experience gaming at a high level

@damiger this is the reason why these companies get away with selling garbage like this, because of hard headed drones like you are willing to buy these products.

JimmeyBurrows
JimmeyBurrows

@Needles-Kane That's a good point, I'm guessing they'll have the XBone controller work on windows 8, but I'm guessing the next few years they'll still make the 360 ones...

In the mean time, hoard a lifetime supply of them, lol.

JimmeyBurrows

@ToTs_00 PS4 should really keep their old controller supported, since it would still have a use for older games.

mssangol

@tframp420 PS2 could use PS1 controllers, and PS3 could use PS2 controllers (albeit you needed an adapter here), Gamecube controller on Wii and N64 controller on both Wii and Gamecube with adapter.

So... yeah.

@AceOfCrismon@damigerSorry but it seems that you did not understand the ethical dilemma i was referring to, let me rephrase.  Imagine the dilemma a Xbox One consumer has to face when playing Watch Dogs.

Please refrain from calling someone you do not know/misunderstood a drone.

tframp420
tframp420

@mssangol Oh yes, with adapters, in a couple cases where a new system offered some form of backwards compatibility which in the history of consoles is very outnumbered.
Wii had controller ports for GC games, great, never used them.
Other cases that needed analog sticks could not.
All other systems from Colecovision to now have not.

cf_Kage
cf_Kage

@jealmosa @Sjeive The Wii is backwards compatible with the Gamecube, so the interface had to be in place to allow for the old controllers to work. Quite easy to interface new with the old if in this fashion
