Xbox 360-branded USB drives start at $40 - Retail Radar

GameStop listing official "pre-configured" SanDisk 8GB USB drive going for $40, 16GB selling for $70--over twice the price of unbranded drives.

Last week, Microsoft confirmed rumors that the Xbox 360 would start supporting USB flash drives starting April 6. The move came after nearly four and a half years of Microsoft only offering first-party proprietary memory units and hard drives, which were widely criticized for being overpriced. It also came just over four months after Microsoft locked out high-capacity third-party memory units with a fall firmware update.

SanDisk's Xbox 360-branded 16GB USB drives cost twice as much as the unbranded ones.

As part of the USB-support announcement, Microsoft said that it was partnering with SanDisk to release Xbox 360-branded USB flash drives. Now, GameStop is listing the official USB drives, which bear a higher price than un-branded third-party devices, for preorder. The 8GB drive retails for $39.99, while the 16GB model sells for $69.90. By comparison, an unbranded SanDisk 16GB thumb drive is on sale on Amazon for $28.50, or 59 percent cheaper.

According to the GameStop description, the main selling point of the Xbox 360-branded USB flash drives is that they are "preconfigured" for a "seamless experience" and come with a one-month Xbox Live Gold membership, which has a full retail value of $8 but can be acquired for as much as $2.50. However, formatting an unbranded third-party drive is as easy as plugging it into the Xbox 360, going to the system settings area, selecting the USB device, and selecting "configure now."

This is one of the many reasons why I sold my Xbox 360 and bought a Playstation 3. Microsoft just tries to rip you off, while Sony is way more lenient about prices.. I mean, come on - XBL is expensive and PSN is 100% free.... To add on to that... the games I BOUGHT on XBLA would not work unless I was signed into XBL, meaning if I want to play the games I already spent money on, I have to pay $50 a year. Is there any way around that?

So this update lets you use a usb stick like you would one of their memory cards? I was a little confused on that point, because I've been using a usb stick to watch video for some time now. What about disc-based drives, still a no go? I have a 500 gig drive that could be retasked to this duty if it's possible. Having looked at the article, it seems that you can only use 16GB per device. That's...incredibly lame.

how long til MS change their mind, and suddenly only their branded USB sticks work

Walmart.com, Sony branded 8 GB memory stick = $39.99, 16 GB= $73.54 Gamestop only has the 4 GB sony, for $34.99 Outrageous prices for flash memory from video game companies is NOTHING new, the phenomena is more than a decade old. The only thing that's changed is that prices on MS USB offerings are FAR more reasonable than their memory cards, and now in-line with what their competitors offer in terms of branded flash memory, and they're STILL outrageous. Pure fanboy fodder article from Tor Thorsen. So because I can find a billion good Bluetooth headsets for less than half of what a Sony Branded headset cost at Gamestop, they're also ripping you off in some big headline news story worthy fashion? No one has a problem with this article? Really? We're really all going to pretend that every accessory made in the last 10 years with the name Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo wasn't outrageously priced? I'm not defending MS, because the product is overpriced but I am condemning Gamespot is the harshest terms for posting such a pointlessly biased article when they could have taken the time to do a well researched feature about actual cost of manufacture vs. retail on video game accessories in general.

wow this is just funny - "However, formatting an unbranded third-party drive is as easy as plugging it into the Xbox 360, going to the system settings area, selecting the USB device, and selecting "configure now." " if people buy the pre-configured flash drives for 40$ or 70$ i will just laugh at you, go to microcenter or newegg and get a 32 gig flash for i dunno 40 to 60$?

so I'm reading you'll only be able to use up to a 16gb usb flash drive after format which is like 13gb or something after format which is like the 20gb hard drive they sell for $50 or $60 that ends up being like 14gb, after format the 16gb usb and the 20gb hard drive will have about the same memory capacity so that isn't bad on the price when you can get a 16gb usb drive for like $20-$25, but come on up to 16gb what is that, that's like 4 videos and a couple game saves. that's crazy that it took about 4.5 years for this and they just locked out high capacity 3rd party drives only alittle over 4months ago that's messed up. straight retards running the show over there or should i say greedy s.o.b's. but its better then nothing and you can bet I'll be checking tom. to see if i get this so called update to use my flash drive.

'the main selling point of the Xbox 360-branded USB flash drives is that they are 'preconfigured' (read: you will have it in the format WE tell you to) for a 'seamless experience'( read: we think you're too stupid to work it out yourself and the 12 seconds it takes to do so will tear your tiny brain apart)'.

Sorry, but does'nt 'USB' stand for 'UNIVERSAL' Serial Bus!? Come on MS, you really need to get your backsides into gear, as the whole storage solution scenario will be a big factor in me deciding to choose your 'Next Gen' console.

@shani_boy101 People are that stupid. Plenty of people bought the 512 MB memory unit, which was a way bigger ripoff when you think about it. That thing sold for 25 bucks.

Wow, I'm amazed M$ has turned 180 degrees (well, more like 90 degrees). Granted they're still trying to rip off suckers that try to get the "seamless experience" of branded drives, but at least they're opening the doors for smarter people. Now if only they'd open up the HDD and memcards, we can finally say they're considerate of their customers and not anti-competitive, greedy and ripping off customers, but that will come (hopefully) soon with the lawsuit brought forth by Datel.

This is just another item for the pick and pay cats, the moms and dads that don't know any better... Anyone that knows even a little tech(probably anyone posting on this page), wouldn't pay those prices. So don't hate cuz they're running a buisness, every brand or company does it in their own way...

No wonder Microsoft can sell there 360s so cheapily, they make the profits with over-priced first party hard-drivers and charge for online game. Sony and Nintendo please take notes.

Why does Microsoft insist on ripping people off? The Hard drive cost waaaaaay too much first of all. I bought videos on the marketplace, over 30 dollars worth of videos, that don't even work on my system(error code 80070005), and Microsoft refuse to refund my money. Its been 5 months since I reported it and when they say "no refunds," they mean it. Also, how come the Microsoft points, through xbox live, are sold like 500, 1000, 2000 and 5000? Because they are stealing. They know most DLC cost 400, 800, 1200 and 1600 but they want "US" as the consumers, to spend extra money. What can I possibly do with 100 microsoft points? Buy avatar clothes? PSSHHHHH!!!! I dont even look at my avatar. That's ridiculous. LMAOOOOOOO @ the fact I know a guy that does 360 hard drive upgrades for $40, so I'm about to get a 250gb. Take that you stealing punks. Great marketing strategy though thieves. I have all 3 systems but I have yet to have a problem with the PS3.
