XBLA games won't carry over to Xbox One

Microsoft confirms Xbox Live Arcade games from Xbox 360 won't work on next-generation platform.

by

Gamers hoping to bring their library of Xbox Live Arcade games with them to the Xbox One are out of luck. Microsoft has confirmed that these games will not carry over to the next-generation platform.

"Those games will continue to run on your Xbox 360 for as long as your Xbox 360 runs," Microsoft Game Studios VP Phil Spencer told GameSpot. "The box is not backward compatible and we think for somebody who invests in a large digital library that you want to keep your [Xbox 360]. Keep that as a vibrant part of the ecosystem."

Continuing to play on an Xbox 360 while others are on Xbox One won't be an alienating experience, Spencer said, because friends lists and achievements will remain constant between both platforms.

"That's why we've made sure that your identity, your friends, are constant between both platforms. You don't have a separate identity on Xbox one or [Xbox 360]; it's the same, you are you," Spencer said. "My friend's network is the same on both boxes, my achievements are the same. So we think that service component is an important component to keep constant across both devices."

The Xbox One not only does not support XBLA titles, but it will not be backwards compatible with Xbox 360 games.

Check out GameSpot's full Xbox One conversation with Spencer for more on used games, the platform's Internet requirements, and new business models.

Not sure if xbOne and 360 games can be played in the same servers at the same time,Yanno like xbOne console's playing against 360 console's?,I don't wish to loose my  online friends in the switch. Some things still in the air for me.I think I will pass on the xbOne  and just stick with my 360 for now since I have 1 or 2 Games on 360 with season passes currently active .

I figure my 2 games On my 360 with season pass  on each @ $240.00 right now plus $500.00 for xbOne and another  $240.00 for these 2 games with season pass on the new system, means the transition year it will  run close to $1000.00 for me no matter what .If the New titles are still around 60 bucks that is.Unfortunately the Lack of using my online 360 games with active season passes on the xbOne from the GitGo makes this less interesting for me..

As cool as the xbOne is, I already have a BlueRay player and Connect .I'll just set back and see how things turn out  between these 2 systems in the online Community.

Would have been nice if the Arcade games worked. At least then there would be a few things to play on it at launch.

The launch lineup of X1 has to be Xbox original quality and exclusive. Halo, Munch's Oddyssee, Dead or Alive 3, Amped, PGR, Jet Set Radio Future, Max Payne. None of the Perfect Dark Zero, Kameo, Quake 4, CoD2 X360 thrash.

Hey this is nothing new. Take Xbox 1 now take Xbox 360 the original games wont play on the 360 and vise versa and so I'm not at all surprised to see that here we go again with the next one. so MS and sony both just want more and more from us and when MS said it is all about us the gamers and for us not really when they say but you need to be connected online all the time and that 24 hours thing if that is true and then no BC for the disc games ok but the downloadable games yea that is cause of the to high of a machine that they have. Yea they say it is all about us and our expereance. I say not really.

So here is the rundown: You get a semi improved Xbox360 Controller, and a flashy voice recognition system, but then you have to deal with:

- ALL YOUR XBOX LIVE (and hard copies) GAMES NOT PLAYABLE AT ALL ON XBOX ONE.

- MICROSOFT FORCING YOU TO CONNECT AT LEAST EVERY 24 HOURS OR NO GAMING REGARLESS OF MULTIPLAYER OR JUST SINGLE PLAYER FUNCTIONALITY.

- AND THE WORST OF ALL DRM'S....READY FOR THIS ONE.....YOU CAN NO LONGER SHARE YOUR GAMES WITH FAMILY OR FRIENDS NO MATTER IF THEY ARE HARD COPIES OR DOWNLOADABLE UNLESS THEY USE YOUR PROFILE....LIKE WE WOULD WANT TO SHARE THAT WITH ANYONE TO AFFECT OUR ACHIEVEMENTS SYSTEM AND NOT TO MENTION OUR PRIVATE INFORMATION WITH ANYBODY.

I think no matter how good the graphics, or the controller or Kinnect 2.0 get to be...as an xbox360 fan that I am I rather take my chances with a PS4 at this point!

I have purchase a lot of old game on XBL I will still like to go back to.  Spent over £300 - £400 last 3 or 4 years.  And now they are going to be useless as soon as 360 dies.  So have sold all my consoles as Sony etc are doing the same (unfortunately I can't sell my live account as I have a lot of windows live games linked to it).  If I'd have know I would have created a different x-box live account for my PC.  I just buy stuff on steam now, so will prob get 90% of the games I owned on XBL in Steam sale for £30.

There is no excuse as 90% of xbl games already work on PC's so not hard or expensive for them to use these on PS4 and x-box one.  It boils down to greed.  so my reward for buying an x-box 360 and spending a ton of cash is being ripped off.  If I had bought a hacked 360 and played all pirate stuff then i would not be loosing anything.  so nice off them to support us honest people.  If I'd have known I wouldn't have bought any xbl stuff as to be fair with all the recent sales a lot of people thought stuff would be backwards compatible, ms should have told everyone 2 or 3 years ago.

So about 20 friends I know will not be buying consoles anymore.  because they have a lot of xbl stuff and fell ripped off like me and most folks out there.  2 friends will still be buying one but said they will never ever buy anything on xbl and more.

Wii-u actually charges to convert your games so you still have an option to use your old stuff (which would be an option on ps4 and x-box one) .  Sadly Wii-u will be dead soon as it will be PC, x-box one or PS4 which all have the same architecture so companies will program games for all 3 platforms easily and won;t bother converting stuff to work on wii-u hardware which hasn't sold many units.

this is another reason it's a huge commitment to switch to a xbox one! please microsoft tell us more? i would loooove to hear what else you got in store :)

Hey guys guess what wii U does!!!!! the exact opposite of what is said in this post, and i hope to god PS3 can transfer to PS4

SharnOfTheDead

I guess this is Microsoft's way of stopping people trading in their old consoles. It's pretty cheap really.  I understand that discs might not be compatible, but Digital content? Seriously? I have around 30 XBLA games on my hard-drive and i don't wanna lose them all!

I just don't understand how they can't be ported over, You can re-download apps/games etc on Android devices and you can do just that when you get a new PC, but yet you can't do that on console? I'm hardly going to want both consoles there, and it would have made sense to at least port XBLA content.  Just Odd, but hey least I have Xbox TV...Oh wait..I live in UK, We won't get that till god knows when.

This entire fiasco is more reason for me to just stick to PC gaming, and get a PS4 for the exclusives. These next gen consoles are turning me off.

So people are complaining about a system that is new and that your old games wont work ok I see the arcade portion of the conversation. yes they should work but game disks wont due to code differences that's why ps3 dropped the ps2 games due to how much hardware it took and strain it caused on the ps3 it burned out systems left and right. and xbox and xbox 360 as well. how many people without a lot of time and coding efforts are willing to play a game from the windows 95 era or 98 era on a windows 8 pc? not many. reason why most of those are hard coding formats that are dead and no longer supported and they have look a likes on the internet now. look at apple they get users to buy a new ipad or iphone all the time when they lose support for the old one. the older ones wont play newer games using the same coding due to the companies saying older hardware wont run it yes that's true and also not true. come on people its a business out to make money just like the rest.  I will keep my 360 for my arcade games but I will be buying a xbox one for the many other features it holds like my live tv and internet and more. they may one day recode and port over some of the most popular and fun games that are on the arcade now like minecraft for the 360 which still is the 2nd most online played game. if your a true tech junkie like myself you will buy the new system.

_fark_
_fark_

Anyone think it may have just cost too much for them to convert all the XBLA games to the new architecture so they just cut their losses and decided to invest into a more advanced system? They may convert some in the future but I highly doubt they will try to resell games you previously bought.

Vodoo

This is complete and utter BULLSHIT Microsoft!!! I have about 120 BOUGHT & PAID FOR arcade games. You're telling me that I can't even play digital games on an "always-connected" system? That doesn't give me much incentive to buy anything else from XBLA or to upgrade to your new system.

Microsoft better make an emulation system for playing digital games, Sony also. There is absolutely no excuse. I can understand the discs not working, but these Arcade games are only digital and much smaller in size It would take a Microsoft or Sony software engineer A DAY to whip up a decent emulator. Pull your collective heads out of your asses!

I'm sorry to whoever said it isn't "evil" that these companies chose not to include BC, but in this day and age, its unacceptable.  Have any of you seen what a modded PS3 can do!?  Are you really telling me that Sony couldn't have done all that in the first place!?  Please that's all bullshit.  You'd think these two giants actually care to add BC after all these goddamn years investing in buying Games, extra controllers, Bigger HDD, textpads, Turtle beaches, Charge Docks, DLC etc., hoping that I wouldn't have to repurchase all this bullshit next gen but no, they decide on making us buy everything all over again. Now I don't mind purchasing new controllers but what the hell am I supposed to do with all the other shit I invested in?   If I had known MS was going to pull this shit I wouldn't have bought anything on XBLA in the first place. Then we have Sony, which wont even allow us to play our favorite PS3 games through disc, but reassure us they will be available for "Purchase" on PSN.  Who the hell would want to play 360 and PS3 with a Xbox1 and PS4 in your face!?  Either way, I've said this before and I'll say it again:  Sony, MS...I'm extremely disappointed in you.  Either way I'll most likely get both these systems because I love games, and its a shame these two companies try to exploit that fact.  So please, Stop defending your favorite company saying they shouldn't have to make old games playable because that's complete bullshit. We've put in so much money into this gen, the least they can do is make sure the next gen is fully compatible with the previous

To everyone that truly is switching over from xbox one to the ps4!  All arrogance aside! I welcome you to the ps community. Hope to see you guys online so we can reek havoc together and enjoy the next gen of gaming with  new and fresh faces. Those that are not switching over I understand and hope you guys have fun with the xbox one  and enjoy the next gen of console  gaming as well!

The lack of backwards compatibility for both systems is pretty pathetic in this next gen age.

Still, it makes me glad I have pretty much only rented console games ever.

xeoneex66
xeoneex66

I can't even begin to count how much fail sony and MS are pulling out of their asses now.  To win me over, they'd have to completely redo their entire infrastructure, the consoles need to be backwards compatable, and GOD DAMN THEY BETTER MAKE ME A FUCKING ESPRESSO O_O

xeoneex66
xeoneex66

I mean I wont be buying this crapfest of a system, but this right here solidifies that even further... way to fuck up again Xbox, no backwards compatibility for the second time in a row now.

Question. Why would somebody buy a next-gen console to play last-gen games? Keep your system, buy a new "old" one, or get on with your life. One thing is for certain. If Borderlands 3 is only on next-gen, I will be purchasing ONE. see what i did there?

Valen_Ca
Valen_Ca

Why is this news? Microsoft has openly stated that backwards compatibility isn't happening due to major differences in the chipset and if they aren't going to do software emulation for the retail games why the hell would they do it for the XBLA games?

BrazObama

and another thing.. everytime next gen is spoken about i always see the same type of comments (oh i guess ill just get a better pc...) i mean just get the pc and jump ship already since this boat is floating fine without you all.

@blackleather223 Except that Microsoft did implement backward compatibility on the 360.  It wasn't perfect, but it did allow a large number of old games to play on the new console.

@_fark_ Point is, the consoles don't last forever, and that's alot of money some people will be losing once their xbox 360s are gone.

@Vodoo Heres a good lesson on digital goods.  I noticed a few games were taken off that I purchased sometime ago, so once they are gone from the hd they are gone forever now.  Glad I only purchased a select few I wanted.  Don't need them to carry over to the next pile of crap anyway won't be buying, my wallet speakers.

@Fursnake It's not out of the question for PS4. With the arrogant fools working at Microsoft, you can guarantee they won't give a crap. They are more concerned at getting "day 1 dlc" for Call of Duty, which will eventually cease to exist like the rest of the content they issue.

killerdwarf88

@xeoneex66 xbox 360 had some games that played the most popular games worked and its due to new coding when a new system is built the architecture is redone and requires new and better coding to work correctly that's why flash in the internet world is slowly being dissolved due to the new coding that's safer and faster.

RitsukoEX

@xeoneex66 actally. you're half right. I can play SOME of my Xbox games on my Xbox360.

@Yomeidient They want backwards compatible so they can play a ton of old games until newer, designed for XBO games come out, instead of the 15 or 16 games that will be launch games (and probably not very good ones.)

@RitsukoEX @javenandy I've heard reasons that are even more stupid than this one. Rest assured I will not buy this piece of crap console.

I knew Microsoft was gonna throw everything away, and then not give a damn about consumers. They don't need to. It doesn't matter how many hardware failures, subscription and game fees that they add. People are going to buy their horrible console.

I'll stick with PS4, and maybe even WiiU. I don't know anyone that's looking forward to Xbox One.

xeoneex66

@killerdwarf88 @xeoneex66 With technology rising, there is always a way.  They choose not too becuase it's easier and quicker to drop it.  When ps2 did it, which by the way is waaay early technology, it worked wonders.  They could easily do it.  They choose not to becuase they don't care about their consumers.  They care about $$$$$$.  I refuse to drop money on companies like this, EA, Activision, M$, Sony, and I don't give a damn about nintendo anymore they are fail anyway.

killerdwarf88

@RitsukoEX @xeoneex66 It's not about pricing, it's about the consoles sucking ass and games are boring as piss.  Irrelevant how much I pay for a graphics card when the games on the PC are far more interesting then on those pisspoor consoles.  No thanks.
