X06: Microsoft sounds off on 360 wireless headset

Hands-free headset for Xbox 360 will have eight hours of battery life, support Microsoft Voice Command for select games.

The big news for Xbox 360 acessories today may have been the $200 price tag for Microsoft's external HD-DVD player, but the company also laid out some details of its Xbox 360 Wireless Headset.

The headset will use the same 2.4GHz radio technology used by the Xbox 360 wireless controller, and will have a range of up to 30 feet from the console. An Xbox 360 can handle up to four headsets and four wireless controllers simultaneously. The battery life on the unit clocks in at eight hours, and each headset will come with an AC adapter for recharging.

Microsoft also says the voice quality on the wireless headset is a dramatic improvement over the wired headset that's currently available. The company also points out that the headset supports "Microsoft Voice Command for selected games," but did not specify which games will include the feature.

As previously noted, the headset will retail for $59.99 when it is launched this November.

$60 seems kinda steep for a headset. sure, it's wireless, but its is way too much, even with added voice control support, it's only worth like $30.

The 360 wire headset is the ugliest, most fragile, uncomfortable, worst-sounding headset I've ever used. I'm buying that 3rd party adapter so I can control volume/mute the old XBL headset. I still think it's shockingly comfortable.

pretty pricey. Don't know if I'd buy it

yanike18, Everybody copies everybody. Xbox controllers vibrate and they came after the Dual Shock, which came after the Rumble Pack on a 64. Don't get so righteous about people "copying" each others ideas. If it works, it works. If it doesn't, don't buy it. Simple.

Who needs bluetooth when it works wirelessly just as well? Strange right? Why would you say that??! Its not like a difference between standard radio and dab radio you know. As long as it works well, and keeps the battery consumption low. Bluetooth is just a name.. I think this accessory should be bundled with some sort of LIVE FREE FOR 3 MONTHS package, or 2000 marketplace points.. or something. Because why would you want a wireless headset? its not like the wired ones have to stretch across a room is it? it goes right into the pad, so it goes where you go. I would get one, if i was really into chatting people up online (which im certainly not into) and if i wanted to spend the same amount i would on a game, on a headset (i wouldnt do that either!)... So. err.. yeah maybeim not getting one. The one "free" with the 360 core looks just fine for me. And i think, even thought its only a headset, i think this is STILL more good news from M$. Compared to sony anyway. I wonder how much ps3 accessories would cost!! I think i just heard Keanu Reeves say "woah" just then.. (again) :P

Isnt it funny how all that "wii is far too expensive" comments people used to put down about the wii's announcements.. they all dissipated onto the TGS about the ps3.. and then people randomly slate the 360. WIERD! Anyways. im glad that each of the consoles have given us a kinda clear direction to go for this christmas (THE time for ANY launch IMO). With the wii, its clear to us if we either want it or not. With the 360, all this good news is great to get excited about. The ps3 is still bleak for me tho :( I think M$ should of offered the wireless headset as a purchase from the beginning (i mean, they COULD of right?) And i think also the wired headset should of been free with ALL consoles. I just think it would give people the incentive to use it on live, for those who dont want to play online yet.. if they have a free wired headset.. who knows. But its a catch really, because who would buy a wireless one if every console had a free wired one? And why would people buy the wireless one if they already HAVE the wired one?! Its not like the wire cant stretch across the room because it goes into the pad! hmm.. I think this accessory should include like 2000 marketplace points or something, because even though its a sweet accessory, its like not such a great distance like a wired and wireless controller you know?

Meh.. bluetooth will be better, with possible more battery life and less intereference... bluetooth headsets are pretty good for mobile phones.

electro712 Of course sony's gonna do the same thing, they copy everybody the PS3 was set 2 release at the same time the 360 came out but they copied microsoft (with the removable hard drive but they made it better with a 20 gig. one) so that set it back half a year then they copied ninendo (with the controller movement controls in game action) which set it back a year so they copy everything!! Who knows what they'll copy next!?! One of the stupidest posts i've read all day. My SLVR L7 came with a bluetooth headset i guess M$ is copying motorolla. Considering that the PS3 uses bluetooth the standard headset will more than likely be wireless.

Not bad imo. I don't plan on being online that much where this would be a problem, even on weekends. Wish it could have charged up like the 360 wireless controller though, my power surge is running out of room damitt.

Guys, saying it's a ripoff because it "only" has 8 hours battery life? If you need to sit there, playing games longer than that without taking a break for a couple hours, you have to sit back and re-evaluate your priorities. 8 hours, with an AC adaptor for recharging, is more than enough. When you go to the can, plug it in. When you go to the store, plug it in. When you go for supper, plug it in. When you go to bed, plug it in. And Bluetooth is FAR superior over RF, for audio transmission. RF can fit a lot of bandwidth in, but you get lots of hiss and static. With bluetooth, because it's fully digital, there's no excess signal that gets turned into hiss, and you can easily fit a full 6 speaker surround setup, with mic, into a low-range bluetooth signal. Now, if they'd come out with a fully supported surround sound headset system, using bluetooth, with a mic, for the X360, that'd be sweet.

I sure hope its better then the logitech one released for the xbox. I would get the worst interference from my wireless router no matter what channel I set it too.

"Microsoft also says the voice quality on the wireless headset is a dramatic improvement over the wired headset that's currently available..." Hehe. Now your curses, swears and hollerings are 'dramatically-improved'! :D Hmm...noticed that some of you guys here called it a 'rip-off' and whatnot... Fanboys, humph!

Yuck_Too

LOL...it is a rip-off. But if you honestly think Sony will not do the same kind of thing when the time comes you are equally naive.

I have it pre-ordered. Can't wait. TorugotoShinsan "Rip-off. You can get a wireless b;uetooth set for the PC for half the price and they are compatable with the PS3. Microsoft should really stop being greedy buggers and use that idea. Why the hell should I buy an extra headset just to talk on a console?" Good thing Sony isn't greedy, I'm sure Sony will not come out with something that cost more then MS. Blue tooth is way cheaper then this. /End Sarcasm

@grnidbandit

I don't know why I bother because you don't read what I write. I never said anything about interference.

I quote from the About The System (PS3) article on Gamespot: "Sony reports that the controller will have a 24-hour battery life, a figure that seems to be in line with other Bluetooth devices but far short of the 300-hour 2.4GHz models available for current consoles."

Got that? A generic statement like Bluetooth > RF is flatly untrue, because it depends (like I said) on the application. For example, wireless networks. WiFi is 2.4/5.2GHz and is better suited for 'hotspot' applications, where range and throughput is an issue. Apparently in this case MSoft wanted range and throughput.

"Microsoft also says the voice quality on the wireless headset is a dramatic improvement over the wired headset that's currently available." The increased quality comes from strengthening the signals and boosting throughput.

So... Bluetooth would not be the answer here. And lest you think MSoft is just boycotting another Sony technology, MSoft is a member of the Bluetooth promotional group.

60$ for wireless headset is just ok, but the batterly life is way way low. A Bluetooth wireless headset I use us rated 18hrs (Also it can be used in PS3). For Microsoft's sake, hope they improve it in the future.
