X-Com creator crafting turn-based 3DS RPG

Comments made by Julian Gollop reveal he's working on a launch title for Nintendo's new portable; could be Ubisoft's portable Ghost Recon title.

Nintendo's new portable, the 3DS, was a huge success at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo. Not only did it draw huge lines of excited gamers, but it also took home the prestigious Best of Show accolade. And one man jumping aboard the 3D express is Julian Gollop, the creator of X-Com.

Gollop goes 3DS for his next project.

Writing in the comments section of a Gamasutra interview with 2K Marin's Jonathan Pelling concerning the upcoming X-Com first-person shooter, Gollop revealed that he's working on a 3DS launch title. Additionally, he enlightened readers on his stance on the real-time strategy genre.

"Publishers run a mile from anything with turn-based mechanics--it is regarded as too niche. RTS games pretty much killed off turn-based strategy games in the mid-'90s--but now even RTS games are regarded as niche," he wrote. So all my experience working turn-based games from 1983-1997 is now somewhat obsolete, despite the success of X-Com. However, I am now working on a turn-based tactical RPG which will be a 3DS launch title."

It is unclear what the name of the purported title is, but there may be more. Gollop's LinkedIn page indicates that he has been employed by Ubisoft's Sofia, Bulgaria, branch since 2007. The French publisher currently has a tactical 3DS Ghost Recon title dubbed Lead the Ghosts scheduled to launch alongside the system, which might be the title Gollop is currently working on. As of press time, Ubisoft had not responded to GameSpot's request for comment or clarification on the matter.

damn, wasn't gonna get a 3DS, no matter how cool the 3d was gonna give it a pass, but now with the X-Com and Laser Squad creator working on a new turned based strategy game, I just know I won't be able to resist. Just hoping that Sid Meier has not heard of or have any plans for the 3DS ;)

I love turn based RPGs. I do not love RTS... mostly because the suck on consoles!

@ blastm Very true the only good console strat games I can think of were on the ps1 like very good ports of CnC1 to retaliation, Warcraft 2, constructor and then on the turn based strat/rpg side there was FF:tactics, front mission3 (my personal favourite) Compared to the last 2 generations where we've had a terrible port of supreme comander and EAs dumbed down for console CnC games such as 3, 4 and redalert3 and...... Well I can't even think of any more which shows how either poor or few have been made

Their are only 4 rts series that were able to do it right and not totally repulse me. Command and Conquer, Starcraft, Star Wars RTS', and Civilization. Lets see what Gollop can do. :)

@SicklySunStorm - There's no denying the fact that there are definitely great Turn based strategy games out there. Even something like board games are fun sometimes. It's just that I don't like making a move, then watch the characters beat each other to death, wait for the other guy, and then repeat. I guess that's why never really got very far in advanced wars.

X-com, now that brings back some memories. I don't see any mention of a FPS, aside the correlation of the title Ghost Recon and it's past projects. To me, this only clarifies that Ubisoft has hired Gollop to develop a game under the well-known franchise's tag. If it's anything related to X-com, I'd be excited. If it is a FPS hybrid, then no thanks.

@King-gamer - I agree for the most part, but there are some games that just wouldn't work as RTS (Civilization, for instance). Civ, actually, is perhaps the finest example of how turn based can totally work and be oh-so addictive.... oh and of course, the Advance Wars series is perfect done in that style... now I WOULD be interested to see a new 3D Advance Wars for the 3DS, that would be awesome.

I just want a proper new X-Com. Screw the FPS of it - screw it right in the ear.

I would prefer something more like X-Com. Still sounds interesting.

If it's half as deep as X-Com, I'll pick it up alongside a 3DS on its launch day.

yet another rpg/tactical on DS/PSP.. you can't count them anymore, but meanwhile, you almost can't find a descent one on regular consoles :(

I think 3D was an idea that began as a fad, but it was a fad due to technology not being good enough. So people tried to sell the idea and a lame version of 3D. As technology continues to develop, I think 3D will become a normal option at the flick of a switch one day, and thus become quite standard (ie not a fad).

can you say Virtual Game Boy rofl. Sorry I'm a bit sarcastic when it comes to Nintendo and 3d. I was manager of an Electronics Boutique when that system came about let me tell ya I could not give them away. Sure they have done great with the DS but 3d in my opinion is just a fad much like it has been in the past.

The 3DS is pretty much the only 3D I am interested in this year. I don't mind other 3D stuff, but I think companies/delevopers are pushing 3D as a mainstream too quickly. I think Nintendo's 3DS will be the real winner for innovation. :)

i love what i see of the 3ds so far but ill probably only use the 3d the first hour or so when i get it then just a few minutes on new games, dont really get the hype 3d is getting right now.

I'm hyped for it, but if I ever get a 3DS, that slider is going OFF. 3D is the worst idea since motion controls and "anarchy" as a political philosophy.

Nice, I hope its a classic high-res animation RPG that actually makes me want to level up. Goldensun ftw.
