WWII Fighters Ships
The winter of '44 feels like yesterday when you're in the game.
Electronic Arts announced today that it has shipped Jane's WWII Fighters, a World War II air-combat fighting game where the action is restricted to a two-week period in the winter of 1944 when bad weather limited Allied forces to ground tactics, after which came air supportand victory in the Battle of the Bulge.
Pilots can fly seven WWII fighter planes - the P-51 Mustang, P-47 Thunderbolt, P-38 Lightning, Messerschmitt Bf109, Focke-Wulf Fw190, Supermarine Spitfire, and the Messerschmitt Me262 - from the perspective of a pilot sitting in a 3D cockpit. Players are able to move the camera360 degrees around the planes. WWII Fighters also includes video interviews with six WWII fighter aces.
The game is one of EA's Glide-enhanced titles, Glide being an application program interface (API) from 3Dfx Interactive that enhances that company's 3D graphics accelerator chips.
WWII Fighters' pilots can play from either the Axis or the Allied side in solo or campaign missions (a mission editor allows players to build their own missions as well). The game can be played by up to eight pilots in its multiplayer mode, and its Fly Now mode launches players immediately into a dogfight, skipping all those pesky takeoff and preparatory maneuvers.
