Chapter 2: General Strategies

This section provides general strategies for success in all of Day of Reckoning’s match types including story mode.

  • It doesn’t matter if you’re battling a human opponent, a computer-controlled adversary in an exhibition match, or one of the WWE superstars during story mode, it’s always important to mix up your attacks. Repeatedly performing the same strikes or grapples will likely result in countless counters. Mix up your arsenal. Do a different attack in similar situations. If your opponent is on the mat, use a strike one time. Next time, put him in a submission hold. Or just strike again then perform a submission hold. Remain unpredictable to reduce the chance of counters. Note that heavy grapples are generally easier to counter than light grapples.
  • Each wrestler possesses a symbol representing parts of their body. Colors denote relative damage inflicted to each part. The colors shift from yellow to orange to deep red--yellow is minor damage and deep red is extreme damage. Use specific moves to inflict damage on particular body parts. For instance, repeatedly utilize arm submission holds to weaken an opponent’s arm. You’ll even begin to notice the opponent walk differently depending on damage. When body part damage indicates deep red, it’s close to tapping out to a submission. Continue to work that part of the body until you get the win.
  • Day of Reckoning includes a new feature: the momentum shift. A colored "spirit" meter governs each wrestler’s relative condition. The spirit meter’s colors run from blue to green to yellow to orange and to red. Blue is a low spirit while red is high spirit. The greater the spirit, the better the wrestler is doing. Even if you haven’t inflicted heavy damage, you can get a pin on a wrestler with low spirit. Likewise, you might have inflicted a lot of damage but if your opponent is in high spirits then you likely won’t be able to hold the pin. Now the momentum shift is the lowest point of the spirit meter. When the meter reads "Danger" you have a chance to shift momentum by pressing "A" and "B" together near your opponent to perform the move. You can use the momentum shift one time per match and it virtually reverses the two spirits. If successful, remain on the offensive because now is your chance to get the pin. Note that often you may never get to the "Danger" level. You may get pinned and lose the match before your spirit is ever that low.
  • Raise your adrenaline meter, which provides the use of the special state which provides access to the finishing moves, by executing successful strikes and grapples, successful counters, and from using your taunts. You can also gain adrenaline from kicking out of pins, so avoid going for the pin constantly. Each time your opponent kicks out, he could gain some adrenaline putting him closer to a special state and his finishing moves. When you accumulate enough adrenaline, you receive a special state which can be used when desired. You could even save up three special states and use them back to back to back. During the special state, you can perform your finishing move multiple times. Hitting repeated special moves is certainly a good way to finish off an opponent or to turn the tide of the spirit meters.
  • Be the aggressor. Chain moves together so your opponent remains constantly on the defensive. For instance, use strikes to knock your opponent to the ground. Grab and pull your opponent back up and perform a light grapple move to slam him back to the mat. He’s now back on the ground. Use strikes to stomp on your prone opponent. Then pick him up again and use an Irish whip to another grapple. Repeat and continue to repeat. Combine this tactic with mixing up your attacks to put together a series of moves that hopefully cause injury and weaken your opponent’s spirit.
  • Use the "C-stick" to switch targets, which is necessary in tag team or other multiple wrestler matches. You don’t want to unleash a series of strikes at the air because you’re targeting the wrong wrestler. Switch targets and engage. Note that you can also target the ref. If you want to "break some rules" then target the ref and knock him to the ground with strikes or a grapple. Now you can enter the ring at will during tag matches without the worry of the ref forcing you back outside. Plus, with the ref out of commission, grab a weapon from underneath the ring and use it on your opponent. Drop the weapon before the ref regains consciousness and get the pin for an underhanded victory.

Chapter 3: Match Strategies

This section offers strategies and tips for the various match types available in Day of Reckoning.

Tag Team

A tag team match is a two-on-two battle. Only one member of each team fights in the ring at a time. You must tag your partner to legally call him into the ring. Otherwise the ref will eventually intervene and push the non-legal team member back out of the ring and onto the apron. Note that "Tornado Tag" is a tag team variation where all team members are legal and in the ring at the same time.

If you’re in trouble, call in your tag team partner for assistance--even if he’s computer controlled.
If you’re in trouble, call in your tag team partner for assistance--even if he’s computer controlled.

In a single-player game, you can chose to remain in control of the match by using your controlled wrestler inside the ring. But you’ll likely be weakened, especially if the other team starts tagging in and out. If you’re in a submission hold or being pinned, call in your tag team partner for assistance. The chart below reveals the controller and button combinations to request your tag team partner’s assistance.

CONTROLLERACTION
"Z" + D-PAD UPRequest tag team partner to attack legal opponent
"Z" + D-PAD DOWNRequest tag team partner to perform double-team maneuver on legal opponent.
"Z" + D-PAD LEFTCall in tag team partner to attack non-legal opponent.

If you tag your computer-controlled tag team partner in, you can provide assistance as well. Just enter the ring using the "Y" button and start pounding on the legal (or non-legal) opponent. Beware that the ref won’t allow your interference for very long. When the ref does interfere, you won’t be able to control your character until he’s back outside the ring. Meanwhile your partner could be in a bad spot (such as on the receiving in of a devastating finishing move) so be careful sticking in the ring too long. Keep the battle close to your own corner. That way it will be more difficult for your opponent to reach his partner to tag in.

You can also take out the ref to freely interfere. Just switch targets (using the C-stick) to the ref and punch his lights out. Now you can double-team the legal opponent as much as you want! You could even use a weapon without fear of disqualification. Be ready to put on your "nice guy face" when the ref regains his composure.

Hardcore

A hardcore match means no disqualification--no hold’s barred--and falls count anywhere, which means you can pin your opponent outside the ring if you wish. Most of all, however, a hardcore match means the availability of weapons! You’ll find some inside the ring or you can gather more from underneath the mat. Exit the ring, stand against the ring, and press the "X" button to pull out a weapon from underneath the mat.

Weapons inflict heavy damage, especially to an opponent’s spirit. A crushed spirit followed by a finishing move often means lights out. Be aggressive. Get your opponent on the mat and pound him with a weapon. Note that you won’t be able to use weapon forever. Items like chairs eventually break after a few successful blows. Make every strike count. Be careful, though, because you can be countered and the weapon can be stolen (though conversely you can counter a weapon attack and steal the weapon). That’s why it’s very effective against an opponent on the mat--harder to counter when you’re spread out on the mat.

Table, Ladder, and TLC Match

The goal in a table match is to put your opponent through a table. Stand the table on its legs, drag your opponent onto the table (you can use an Irish whip, for instance), and then perform some sort of grapple move that drops or slams your opponent through the table.

In a TLC match, you have access to tables, ladders, and chairs and any of these can be used as weapons. To win the match, you must use a ladder to reach the belt hanging above the ring. The first tag team member to grab the belt wins the match for that team. Note also that all tag team members are in play; there’s no need to tag in and out.

A ladder match is similar except there are only ladders in play. Likewise, the ladder can be used as a weapon as well as the means to grab the belt hanging above the ring.

In the TLC and ladder matches, the challenge is getting up the ladder and reaching for the belt before a member of the opposing team knocks you off. Likewise, as soon as you see an opponent climbing the ladder, forget what you’re doing and get to the ladder and use the "B" button to strike the ladder and knock your opponent off.

Tables, chairs, and even ladders can be used as weapons in these matches.
Tables, chairs, and even ladders can be used as weapons in these matches.

Use the tables, ladders, and chairs as weapons to pulverize your opponents. It’s a quick way to drain health and spirit. It can keep your opponents on the ground for extended periods of time, which is key to setting the ladder up and reaching the top for a win. You could also take the fight outside the ring. Muscle your opponent around out there and leave him on the ground after a devastating special move. Return inside the ring and while your tag teammate occupies the other opponent, set up the ladder and ascend.

Set up the ladder in as close to the rings center as possible. The belt hanging above does sway back and forth so you can certainly be off to the left or right and still reach the belt. Get up the ladder quickly and use the "Y" button at the ladder’s top to jump for the belt. In tag matches, your teammate will also do a decent job of setting ladders up and going for the belt so if need be occupy your opponents with weapon attacks while your partner goes for the belt.

Handicap, Triple Threat, and Fatal Four Way

In a handicap match, it’s one superstar against two. During the story mode, you’ll encounter a handicap match where the two-member team must tag in and out. Otherwise expect the handicap match to be "tornado tag" style where both of the team members are in the ring at the same time. Both styles of handicap match can be tough. Even if you’re just fighting one-on-one, the second team member can enter the ring and interfere during submission holds or pin attempts.

Triple threat and fatal four way matches are free-for-all battles with three and four superstars respectively. The victor in each of these match types is the superstar that gains the first pinfall or submission. It doesn’t matter which one gets pinned or which one finally submits, the winner of the match is the superstar that completes the pin or the submission.

In both match types, look for opportunities to double-team. You should also certainly strive to stay out of the double-team situation. In a triple threat, hang back and take your shots if the other two are occupied in battle. Taunt to raise your special meter when you aren’t engaged. Use a similar tactic in a fatal four way; though expect to be occupied most of the time since there’s an opponent for each superstar.

Cage and Hell in a Cell

Win a cage match by escaping the cage. Climb up the side of the cage. When you reach the top, hit the "A" button rapidly to move over the cage’s top. Use the control pad to ascend over the top of the cage and down the other side. This isn’t an instantaneous maneuver. It will take you several seconds to get over the top of the cage. Therefore, it’s best to ensure that your opponent remains on the mat for an extended period of time. If he gets up and you’re still working your way over the cage’s top, he’ll climb up the cage and pull you down.

Win a cage match by climbing up, over, and out of the cage.
Win a cage match by climbing up, over, and out of the cage.

Don’t feel rushed to get up the cage. Work your opponent as if it were a typical singles match. Weaken his body and spirit and perform a finishing move (or two) if possible before working up the cage. You want your opponent on the mat as long as possible to give you enough time to work over the top of the cage. When you’re over and land on the other side, the match is won.

A Hell in the Cell match is also inside a cage but it is win by pin or submit not escape. In fact, there’s a top to the cell. It’s possible to break the cell walls by Irish whipping your opponent into the wall three times. You can get outside the cell and climb to the top and battle your opponent there. Crash your opponent through the cell top a la Mick Foley by slamming your opponent into the roof three times.

Iron Man

In an Iron Man match, the winner is the superstar that gets the most pin falls or submissions within the designated time limit. Capitalize on your special state and finishing moves. When you’re in your special state, administer as many finishing moves as possible. A few successful blows and you might be able to enter your special state again and continue the barrage. When you do get a pin, stay on your opponent. He’s likely regained some spirit but you still have the advantage, especially if you’re close to another special state.

Note that it is even possible to "run away" if you are ahead in the match. For instance, you’re up 6 pins to 4 with time running down. Instead of taking your chances inside the ring, get outside and just run around the ring. The ref will start a count but you should have no trouble getting back inside before being counted out.

Royal Rumble

The WWE’s yearly Royal Rumble is 30 of the top superstars in an elimination battle royale. Superstars enter the ring one after another (a brief interval between each). Eliminate the competition by tossing a superstar over the rope. If you can’t hang on and land on the floor, you’ve been eliminated.

Strategies for a Royal Rumble are similar to handicap, triple threat, and fatal four way matches--though at a much larger scale. Try to avoid being double teamed (or even worse) and allow other superstars to engage in battle while you take shots as they come and taunt to elevate your adrenaline meter. Toss your opponent over ropes with slams or Irish whips close to the rope. When your opponent hangs on, use the "B" button rapidly to strike at your opponent and knock them out of the ring.

Chapter 4: Story Mode Walk-through

This section provides a complete walk-through of Day of Reckoning’s story mode. After your developmental training and a stint on Sunday Night Heat you can choose to appear on RAW or Smackdown! Both storylines follow a similar path, though the participants do change. This walk-through covers both storylines and also offers tips on molding your superstar.

Attributes

Make your first decision by generating your character’s initial attributes.
Make your first decision by generating your character’s initial attributes.

Six attributes mold your character. You begin with meager statistics (though you can shape them somewhat through the random generation) and will build these attributes during the course of the story mode. It’s wise to focus your attribute distribution on a few skills instead of spreading them around. For instance, you could become a master of a few skills instead of just being "good" at all of them. For example, if you want to specialize in submission holds, raise your submission attribute often. Mix in some strength and durability to keep your wrestler strong. The six attributes are:

  • Strength: The higher the rating, the stronger the wrestler, which affects overall damage inflicted.
  • Speed: Your wrestler’s overall speed. The higher the rating, the faster the wrestler.
  • Durability: The higher the rating, the more durable--resistant to damage--your superstar. It also might affect how quickly your wrestler gets up relative to similar damage levels.
  • Counter: Gauges your superstar’s ability to counter moves and possibility the ability to be countered. Higher the counter rating the better the ability to counter.
  • Charisma: Determines the rate at which your adrenaline (special) gauge rises. Higher the charisma, the higher the rate. Higher charisma generally means you will be able to perform more finishing moves.
  • Submission: Focus your wrestler on submission holds with a high submission rating. A high rating means you can hold submission moves longer as well as break them sooner.

You’ll gain a certain amount of attribute bonus points each match when can then be used to raise your attributes. The chart below reveals how many points are required to raise each attribute level.

ATTRIBUTE LEVELPOINTS
0.5 to 2.55 points
3.0 to 5.010 points
5.5 to 7.515 points
8.0 to 9.520 points
9.5 to 10.025 points

Report to WWE Developmental

Date: 4th week of March, Show 1
Match Type: Single Match
Special Conditions: None

This is your first match as part of the WWE developmental program. You’ve created your wrestler and can now learn the ropes with the help of Jonathan Coachman, otherwise known as "the Coach". The first few shows in WWE Day of Reckoning help prepare you for the more difficult matches to come.

It’s wise to build as much attribute points as possible during these relatively easy match-ups. Instead of winning matches in dominant fashion, practice using your counters, grapples, and strikes. Also, win the match with your finishing move. All of these will give you a few more attribute points. The faster you can build and strengthen your character, the easier the earlier matches become. You also gain more attribute bonus for losing stamina; so it’s not bad to take some punishment as well but that certainly makes the match more difficult!

In the first match your goal is as straightforward as they come: just win! It’s a standard singles match. Mix up your maneuvers and defeat your opponent in the squared circle. Get the pin under the time limit to move on to your next task in WWE developmental.

Five Minutes

Date: 1st week of April: Show 2
Match Type: Single Match
Special Conditions: You’ve got five minutes to defeat your opponent.

Jonathan Coachman has a new task: not only do you need to win your next WWE developmental match but you must win it in under five minutes. There’s another match coming up that must be won in under five minutes so get your practice here.

Five minutes seems short but it’s plenty of time to dispatch your opponent. Work on successful counters to build your percentage for a good attribute bonus and finish off your opponent with a special move. Stick on your adversary constantly. You have time but it is better not to waste it outside the ring or moving around waiting for an opening. Strike and grapple successfully, counter successfully, and finish off with a special move.

Meet Mr. Heyman

Date: 2nd week of April: Show 3
Match Type: Single Match
Special Conditions: You need to hit your finishing move twice.

Former owner of ECW and on-again, off-again General Manager of Smackdown!, Paul Heyman acknowledges your good work thus far during the WWE developmental process and assigns a new task. In your next match, you’ll need to show off your finishing move twice before getting the win.

This isn’t a difficult task and can be even easier if you have a "quick" special move. For instance, your character has a special move that can be done multiple times during the special state period. You can knock out both moves in one special state interval; after two special moves, your opponent is likely done for so just get the pin to complete the task. As in your first two matches, work on your counters to build attribute bonus and mix up your attacks to better avoid being countered.

V.0.7

Date: 3rd week of April: Show 4
Match Type: Single Match
Special Conditions: Work Matt’s legs and go for a leg submission.

You’ve been assigned a match against WWE superstar Matt Hardy. He’s often referred to as Matt Hardy version 1.0 but now he’s just Matt Hardy version 0.7--he’s at about 70% because of an injury to his leg. Your task in this upcoming match is to take advantage of that injury. Work Matt Hardy’s legs and win the match by a submission hold on the leg.

Matt Hardy is just version 0.7 right now. Work on his injured legs with submission moves!
Matt Hardy is just version 0.7 right now. Work on his injured legs with submission moves!

Mix up your attacks and grapples early and get Matt on the mat! Once he’s down, commence your attack on Matt’s legs to further injury his already wounded legs. Maneuver to Matt Hardy’s feet and use your grapple attacks to utilize your wrestler’s array of submission holds on his legs. He may escape from the first or second hold; keep working the legs (tapping the "A" button as rapidly as possible during the hold) until Matt Hardy submits. Perform the submission holds away from the ropes so you don’t get a break or rope break. Drag Matt Hardy to the center of the ring if necessary.

Learning to Fly

Date: 4th week of April: Show 5
Match Type: Single Match
Special Conditions: Hit opponent with at least two aerial moves off the top turnbuckle.

This is another standard one-on-one match-up but with a specific win condition. In this scenario, you must perform two aerial moves (leaping off the top turnbuckle in any corner of the ring) before getting the win. Weaken your opponent initially with a mix of strikes and grapples. You need your adversary weaker so he’ll stay on the mat longer giving you time to pull off the aerial move.

Once he’s weakening, conduct the battle closer to one of the turnbuckles. When he’s down on the mat, maneuver to the closest turnbuckle, climb on top, and perform an aerial strike from the top turnbuckle. After the first move, if possible, return quickly to the turnbuckle and perform a similar aerial move to complete the objective. Be sure both moves have connected. Finish the match with your special move for maximum attribute bonus points.

Impressing the Coach

Date: 1st week of May: Show 6
Match Type: Single Match
Special Conditions: You need to counter your opponent’s grapple: twice.

Jonathan Coachman wants you to win your next match only after you’ve performed two counters to your opponent’s grapples. This is good practice for future matches where your ability to counter becomes even more vital for victory (and building your special meter quickly).

When the match begins, stand toe-to-toe to your opponent and wait for the signal to counter (if you have the button indicators on) and counter your opponent’s attack. Work on obtaining your two grapple counters and then complete the match as normal. Remember that the higher your successful counter percentage, the greater your attribute bonus. Land a mix of strikes and grapples and finish the match with a special move.

A Reasonable Man

Date: 2nd week of May: Show 7
Match Type: Single Match
Special Conditions: You may not use any finishing moves during the match.

Your wrestler’s finishing move is likely the most powerful means of completing a match: now you must win without it! Depending on how you’ve built your character thus far, utilize heavy strikes and grapples or submission moves to weaken your opponent. Mix up the attacks to remain on the offensive. Keep your opponent on the mat. There you can use submission holds or pick up your opponent for another grapple maneuver. Go for a pin or submission after weakening your opponent’s body as well as their spirit.

Say Goodbye to WWE Developmental

Date: 3rd week of May: Show 8
Match Type: Single Match
Special Conditions: None

Your final match as part of the WWE developmental program is against one of the premiere superstars, Smackdown!’s Booker T. You do have one advantage: Booker T isn’t 100% as he’s coming off an arm injury. Use the techniques you’ve practiced so far during the developmental program. Mix up your strikes and grapples to avoid being countered (as much as possible, at least) and keep Booker on the mat and on the defensive.

This is your first big match and last one in the developmental program. Defeat Booker T!
This is your first big match and last one in the developmental program. Defeat Booker T!

Maximize your attribute points by landing successful blows and grapples as well as countering Booker T as frequently as possible. Build your special meter and finish Booker T off with your special move.

Welcome to Sunday Night Heat

Date: 4th week of May: Show 1
Match Type: Single Match
Special Conditions: None

You’ve graduated from the WWE developmental program and are ready to appear on the WWE program Sunday Night Heat. However, your first few matches won’t be televised. This first match is what is referred to as a "dark match," which is a match that takes place before the televised event. It’s a means of evaluating talent and entertaining the paid attendance.

This first dark match is against RAW superstar Lance Storm. It’s a standard single match with no special conditions. Follow the general strategies for winning a match--mix up your attacks and grapples, perform successful counters, keep Lance Storm on the defensive, and finish it all off with a special move.

The Great Valbowski

Date: 1st week of June: Show 2
Match Type: Tag Match
Special Conditions: None

Your second match on Sunday Night Heat is another dark match but it’s your first tag match (first of several throughout the Day of Reckoning storyline). There are certainly several ways you can approach a tag match. You could play it like a single match where you remain in control of the match by remaining in the ring at all time or you can tag your partner and allow your computer-controlled ally to battle while you make frequent ring entrances to assist.

You’re matched with RAW superstar Val Venis for this tag match. If you plan to remain in control of the match then just conduct the match like a singles battle. Mix up your attacks and weaken your opponent. Try and keep your opponent from tagging out so you don’t allow a fresh man in the ring. If you utilize Val Venis, then enter the ring frequently to assist him (though the ref will push you back out). Help Val especially when he’s being pinned; conversely, if he goes for a pin, try and intercept your opponent’s teammate so Val can get the cover.

First Televised Match

Date: 2nd week of June: Show 3
Match Type: Single Match
Special Conditions: Execute a counter-move plus either an aerial move or submission in less than five minutes.

Your first milestone of success: your first televised match on Sunday Night Heat. In this match you battle the man-beast known as Rhyno. There are a series of special conditions for this singles match; think of these conditions like a combination of the tasks you were asked to perform during the WWE developmental program.

While on Sunday Night Heat, you have a feud with Rhyno.
While on Sunday Night Heat, you have a feud with Rhyno.

During your match with Rhyno you must execute at least one counter. Along with one counter you must perform at least one aerial move or at least one submission hold. Finally, you must win the match in less than five minutes (this is television remember!).

Don’t feel too rushed; any of the required moves can be completed quickly. As soon as you get Rhyno on the mat for an extended period of time, go for a submission hold. Or you can drag him close to one of the turnbuckles and execute an aerial move. For the counter move, just stand toe-to-toe with Rhyno and wait for the opportunity to counter a strike or grapple. With both tasks completed, work on quickly finishing the match. Mix up your attacks and build your special meter for your finishing move.

Gore of the Man-Beast

Date: 3rd week of June: Show 4
Match Type: Single Match
Special Conditions: Destroy at least one of the announcer tables.

Rhyno didn’t appreciate your quick, and varied, victory in the previous match; the man-beast attacks you in the locker room with his gore special move. A rematch has been signed for Sunday Night Heat and you must participate--even now slightly injured. A quick check of your body health reveals every part slightly injured (and it doesn’t take long for them to be even more injured during the match).

The match also has a special condition: you must destroy at least one of the announcer tables. These tables are located along the bottom of the screen. You must exit the ring to reach them. It’s fairly easy to lure Rhyno toward one of the announcer tables. Just exit the ring, walk over to one of the tables, and use the "Y" button to climb on top of the table. Rhyno will usually follow. If he doesn’t follow you up the table, use an Irish whip move at the table to usher him on top.

Once on top of the table, perform a grapple move that will slam Rhyno into the table. This will break the announcer table and complete the objective. This can be a tough match since you’re injured. Keep Rhyno away and on the defensive with a mix of strikes and grapples. Maintain your spirit with successful counters, submission holds, and other damaging moves until you can enter your special state and perform your finishing move.

An Uneasy Partnership

Date: 4th week of June: Show 5
Match Type: Tag Match
Special Conditions: Your partner needs to get the pinfall.

After two hard fought matches and a seemingly on-going feud, you’ve been asked to team up with your rival Rhyno for a tag team match. But here’s the catch: you’ve been asked to help give Rhyno a boost by making sure he gets the pinfall win in the match.

This is a difficult match because you’re leaving the control of the match up to the computer-controlled Rhyno. You must allow Rhyno to get the pin and the win to complete the match and move on in the story line. Tag Rhyno into the match early on. Rhyno will be the legal man but you should still enter the ring frequently to help weaken Rhyno’s opponent.

The referee won’t let you interfere for extended periods of time but you can knock the referee down so you can interfere more freely. Just switch targets to the referee and perform some strikes or grapples on him. Toss him out of the ring if necessary. Remember, however, that if the ref is down, Rhyno can’t get the pin. Only take the ref out when helping Rhyno weaken his opponent. If he’s already weak, keep the ref around in case Rhyno goes for a pin.

Rhyno must get the pin for you to meet the special conditions for this match.
Rhyno must get the pin for you to meet the special conditions for this match.

Rhyno’s special move is the gore, which he doesn’t always execute fluidly. He’ll knock his opponent down then get into the gore stance. He won’t execute the move until his opponent stands up; by then, Rhyno could be out of his special state. You can try and help by standing his opponent up but Rhyno might miss and accidentally gore you instead!

Finally, one of the key times to interfere is when Rhyno does go for a pin. The other tag team opponent will enter the ring and attempt to break up the attempt. Intercept the opponent before he can reach Rhyno.

Back On-line

Date: 1st week of July: Show 6
Match Type: Single Match
Special Conditions: None

After the difficult tag team match with Rhyno, the next couple matches return to the standard singles format. You’ve been invited to participate in a four-man "mini-tournament". The winner of the four man mini-tournament gets called up to one of the WWE flagship shows, RAW and Smackdown!

Despite the tourney format, this is just a standard singles match. Mix up your attacks and grapples, counter effectively, raise your special meter, and perform your finishing move to eliminate your opponent. After the match, Matt Hardy thrashes you in the locker room. Apparently he’s back to version 1.0. He’s also the last thing standing in your way to superstardom on RAW or Smackdown!

Taking the Next Step

Date: 2nd week of July: Show 7
Match Type: Single Match
Special Conditions: None

This is it! It’s the finals of the four man mini-tournament. You’ve met your opponent before. Once you defeated him by leg submission during WWE developmental and then he beat you down in the locker room after your (and his) win on Sunday Night Heat last week. Win this final match in the mini-tournament and you’re on your way to RAW or Smackdown!

Despite its importance, this is a standard singles match, a one-on-one battle versus Matt Hardy for the mini-tournament crown and the right to move to a premiere WWE televised show. Matt Hardy is fairly quick and counters well so mix up your strikes and grapples. Use every means possible to win the match and move on in the storyline. Matt Hardy is your last step before superstardom and your major decision in story mode: are you a RAW superstar or a Smackdown! superstar?

Decisions, Decisions...

Date: 3rd week of July: Show 8
Match Type: Single Match
Special Conditions: None

By defeating Matt Hardy, you emerge victorious in the four man mini-tournament. You’ve earned the right to graduate to one of the WWE’s flagship shows. It’s time to make that decision. Do you want to be a RAW superstar or would you rather face the competition on Smackdown!

Make your choice! Note that the story mode is nearly identical between the two shows. The plot line remains similar just the names and faces are different. For instance, on RAW you’ll join up with Evolution; but on Smackdown! you’ll team up with the New Ministry.

The following table reveals the members of Evolution on RAW and their corresponding counterparts on Smackdown! as the New Ministry.

RAW - EVOLUTIONSMACKDOWN! - NEW MINISTRY

The table below lists some of the RAW and Smackdown! superstars you can expect to face (and team up with) on each show. You may want to base your decision on which wrestlers you want to see during your game. Note that these don’t necessarily correspond to each other; this is just a sample list of the wrestlers you could expect to see on each show.

After your decision, you have one last match on Sunday Night Heat. Your opponent depends on which show you selected. If you chose to be on RAW, you’ll face off against Ric Flair. If you chose to be on Smackdown! you’ll face off against Big Show.

You suffer one last beat down before arriving on RAW or Smackdown!
You suffer one last beat down before arriving on RAW or Smackdown!

Regardless of who you fight, one fact remains the same: you’re supposed to lose. No matter what you do, Ric Flair or Big Show will overpower you with aggressive strikes, grapples, and counters. You might get in some good licks but don’t expect much. Just lose and move on in the story!

A Valuable Investment (RAW and Smackdown!)

Date: 4th week of July: Show 1
Match Type: Tag Match
Special Conditions: None

Your first appearance on RAW or Smackdown! begins with a standard tag team match. Your opponents differ depending on your show selection (Lance Storm and Val Venis on RAW or Chavi Guerrero and Hardcore Holly on Smackdown!). Your initial run on RAW or Smackdown! starts in the tag team division so get used to these tag matches.

As mentioned during the earlier tag team match walk-through, you can chose to focus on this match like a singles battle or actually use your tag team partner in the fight. If you do the match solo, don’t allow your opponent to tag out. Keep him on the defense and on the mat as much as possible. If you do get into trouble, tag your partner and take a breather.

If you use your partner, assist him frequently by entering the ring. You can knock out the ref if you want and double team the competition. If your partner goes for submission holds or a pin, intercept your opponent’s tag partner before he can interfere.

Singles Debut (RAW and Smackdown!)

Date: 1st week of August: Show 3
Match Type: Single Match
Special Conditions: None

Take a brief break from the tag team division with a singles match against Christian or Doug Basham depending on your WWE show selection. This is a no-frills singles match. There are no special conditions or rules. Just pin your opponent or force him to submit to complete the match. Follow all of the general strategies used thus far: mix up your moves, counter successfully for greater attribute bonuses, and finish strong with a special move.

Representing Evolution (RAW), Representing the New Ministry (Smackdown!)

Date: 2nd week of August: Show 3
Match Type: Tag Match
Special Conditions: Normal

Your third match on RAW or Smackdown! is a final tag team tune up before a major showdown at one of the big WWE pay-per-view events, next week’s Summerslam. This is a standard tag team match up with no special conditions or rules. Defeat your opponents along with your tag partner (Haas or Batista depending on your show selection) to move the story to the next match.

Destroying the Competition (RAW), Burying the Competition (Smackdown!)

Date: 3rd week of August: Show 4
Match Type: Tag Match, TLC Match
Special Conditions: None

It’s your first pay-per-view battle: a tables-ladders-chairs (TLC) tag team match. Your opponents depend on which show you chose; expect Shelton Benjamin and Edge on RAW and Rob Van Dam and Rey Mysterio on Smackdown!

Win this TLC match by grabbing the belt suspended above the ring.
Win this TLC match by grabbing the belt suspended above the ring.

The challenge is getting up the ladder and reaching for the belt before a member of the opposing team knocks you off. Likewise, as soon as you see an opponent climbing the ladder, forget what you’re doing and get to the ladder and use the "B" button to strike the ladder and knock your opponent off.

Your tag teammate will also do a decent job of setting ladders up and going for the belt so if need be occupy your opponents with weapon attacks while Haas or Orton grab that belt.

Number One Contenders? (RAW and Smackdown!)

Date: 4th week of August: Show 5
Match Type: Tag Match
Special Conditions: None

After a great showing at Summerslam, it’s back to the grind in this standard tag team match against familiar rivals. With no special conditions or rules, it’s a straight up tag battle. Conduct the fight under your control, tag in your partner, or use a mixture of both to defeat your opponents. Don’t forget to continue to maximize your attribute bonus with effective counters and the use of special moves to close out the contest. The match is over when a cut scene interrupts the action; you’re attacked during the pin!

Divide and Conquer (RAW and Smackdown!)

Date: 1st week of September: Show 6
Match Type: Single Match
Special Conditions: Once the referee is knocked out, use your finishing move on the opponent.

Evolution (on RAW) or New Ministry (on Smackdown!) have a new plan to deal with your tag team rivals. It’s called divide and conquer. In the plan, you’ll face off against one opponent while your partner (Batista on RAW or Haas on Smackdown!) battles the other. You have special orders, however; you need to assist your tag team partner by knocking out the referee and performing your finishing move on the opponent.

In this show you don’t play your own match; a cut scene reveals its outcome (you win, naturally). The true match becomes when your tag team partner battles his opponent. You’re assisting either Batista (RAW) or Charlie Haas (Smackdown!). Orders are to knock out the ref then use your finishing move on your tag teammate’s opponent.

Your orders in this match are to help your tag team partner by dishing out a special move on his opponent.
Your orders in this match are to help your tag team partner by dishing out a special move on his opponent.

You begin the contest with near full special meter. It’s difficult to raise your special meter so if you miss the finishing move, it could be awhile before you have a chance again--so make your first special state count!

Before you take down the ref, just enter the ring and perform some strikes or grapples on your teammate’s opponent. Build your special meter until you can perform a special move. Return outside the ring and grab a weapon from underneath the mat (hold "X" while against the ring). Enter the ring, switch targets to the ref, and then smack him around with the weapon. If possible, throw him out of the ring. The longer he stays away the better.

Now it’s time to turn your attention to your tag teammate’s opponent. Get your tag teammate away from the opponent (you can even hit him if you want, there aren’t consequences). Enable your special state then perform your finishing move on the opponent. This immediately ends the match.

The most important thing to remember is to not waste your special state because gaining more on your special meter is very difficult. Don’t activate your special state unless the ref has just been knocked out because you don’t want to be sent out of the ring with your special active--you’ll never have time to perform the finishing move and will have to start all over again.

What Evolution Means (RAW), Fear and Darkness (Smackdown!)

Date: 2nd week of September: Show 7
Match Type: Tag Match
Special Conditions: None

Batista (RAW) or Haas (Smackdown!) didn’t appear to appreciate your help in last show’s match. But you team up once again in a tag match against familiar rivals. Despite the orders in the opening cut scene, it’s a standard tag team match. Follow the same strategies as previous tag team matches. Conduct the battle primarily using your character or utilize your tag team partner in frequent assistance. Maximize attribute bonus with a mix of strikes and grapples and counter effectively to keep your success percentage high.

You’re ordered in the opening cut scene to take out your tag partner after the match. Conduct the match as normal. After getting the win, another cutscene reveals Batista (RAW) or Charlie Haas (Smackdown!) being jumped by Evolution or New Ministry respectively.

Tag Team Title Shot (RAW and Smackdown!)

Date: 3rd week of September: Show 8
Match Type: The WWE Tag Team Championship
Special Conditions: None

You’ve reached another milestone. It’s your first championship match: the WWE Tag Team Championship. Of course, you lost a longtime partner in the previous show. You now team with Randy Orton (RAW) or Booker T (Smackdown!). Before the match, a cut scene reveals that you’re jumped by Batista (RAW) or Charlie Haas (Smackdown!). The beating takes a toll because you enter the tag team title match injured. In both shows you battle against Doug and Danny Basham, the Basham Brothers, for the title.

Other than being slightly injured, the match plays out like a standard tag team match. You may rely more on your tag team partner in this match because of your injury. However, the Basham Brothers aren’t that formidable. You should be able to gain the upper hand quickly with a mix of strikes and grapples. Keep your opponent on the mat with submission holds (especially if you have a decent submission rating so far). If you tag your partner in, assist him frequently inside the ring.

Loud and Clear (RAW and Smackdown!)

Date: 4th week of September: Show 9
Match Type: Tag Match
Special Conditions: None

This is a standard tag match with no special conditions or rules. It’s a title defense of your new tag team championship; your opponent depends on your show selection. The Basham Brothers--although not involved in the match--get some revenge for the beating you gave them last show--they attack you after the match. Other than the aftermath, the main match plays out like a standard tag match. Use the general tag team strategies used thus far to win the battle and continue with the story mode.

Evolution Gets Some Revenge (RAW), The New Ministry Gets Some Revenge (Smackdown!)

Date: 1st week of October: Show 10
Match Type: Single Match
Special Conditions: None

After a run of tag team matches, you return to standard singles competition against a new rival. You face off against one of the Basham Brothers in a one-on-one contest. Use single match general strategies to win the battle. Maximize attribute bonus with successful attacks, counters, and a finishing move.

Handicapped (RAW and Smackdown!)

Date: 2nd week of October: Show 11
Match Type: Handicap Match
Special Conditions: None

Your success thus far is put to the test in this special handicap match. In a handicap match, the two "teams" are unbalanced. In this case, it’s you against two WWE superstars. Expect to face Chris Jericho and Edge on RAW and Rob Van Dam and Eddie Guerrero on Smackdown!

This is a handicap match. It’s you versus two other WWE superstars.
This is a handicap match. It’s you versus two other WWE superstars.

Although it’s a two-on-one situation, the other team does have to tag in and out so you won’t be constantly double-teamed throughout the entire contest. It can get difficult if you’ve worn down one opponent and he manages to get a tag, then you’ll have to face a fresh adversary.

Another difficulty is actually getting the pin. You won’t have someone to help intercept an interfering opponent. When you go for a pin (or even a submission hold), the other opponent enters the ring and interferes, usually breaking the pin or the hold. You can try and perform these moves as far away from their corner as possible or just wear down your opponent so much that you can repeatedly go for pins or submission holds until the interference just can’t reach in time.

Rematch with the Bashams (RAW and Smackdown!)

Date: 3rd week of October: Show 12
Match Type: Tag Match, Ladder Match
Special Conditions: None

It’s time for a rematch against the Basham Brothers after taking their tag team titles away. Things are slightly different this time around: it’s a ladder match! A ladder match is similar to the tables-ladders-chairs (TLC) match you completed earlier in the story mode. The only difference: there aren’t any ladders or chairs! Otherwise the goal remains the same. Place the ladder near the ring’s center, climb to the top, and grab the belt that hangs above the ring. The first team member to grab the belt wins the match.

You’ll find the ladder outside the ring but you can grab more by searching underneath the ring. Just walk against the ring and press the "X" button to pick up more ladders. Don’t worry though; your tag team partner (as well as your opponents) will likely get out plenty of more ladders. In fact, expect the ring to be cluttered with ladders, which can make the match more difficult.

Follow the general strategies of the TLC match to win the ladder match. Utilize the ladders as weapons to pummel your opponents early on. You can either allow your tag team partner to try and ascend the ladder while you occupy the two Bashams or you can thrash a Basham (outside the ring preferably) and try to ascend the ladder yourself while your partner occupies the other brother.

Choosing an Opponent (RAW and Smackdown!)

Date: 4th week of October: Show 13
Match Type: Single Match
Special Conditions: None

The dominance of Evolution or the New Ministry continues in this standard singles battle. Your opponent is chosen for you and is likely either Chris Benoit if you’re on RAW or Rey Mysterio if you’re on Smackdown! It’s a no-frills singles match. Utilize your character’s strengths (which should be focused by now) and keep your opponent on the defensive. As you get the win, the remaining members of Evolution or the New Ministry arrives to beat your opponent to a pulp. Thus begins a new feud...

Bischoff Puts His Foot Down (RAW), Angle Puts His Foot Down (Smackdown!)

Date: 1st week of November: Show 14
Match Type: Single Match
Special Conditions: Normal

Given the ongoing match problems Evolution (RAW) or the New Ministry (Smackdown!) are causing, general manager Eric Bischoff (RAW) or Kurt Angle (Smackdown!) decide to ban Evolution or the New Ministry from ringside for the rematch between you and your opponent from last week’s show. It’s another no-frills singles match. There are no special conditions or rules; just a standard singles match with a new ending.

As you win the match, without Evolution or the New Ministry to protect you, Edge and Shelton Benjamin (RAW) and John Cena or Rob Van Dam (Smackdown!) ambush you.

Speaking on Behalf of Evolution (RAW), As Leader of the New Ministry... (Smackdown!)

Date: 2nd week of November: Show 15
Match Type: Single Match, Cage Match
Special Conditions: Win by escape only.

This is the third match--the end of a trilogy--of the ongoing feud from the past couple shows. First it was Evolution (RAW) or the New Ministry (Smackdown!) that interfered with the match. After being banned, it was your rivals that interfered at the match’s end. To put a final end to these interferences, the general managers of the respective shows order a cage match.

Defeat your opponent in this cage match through escape only.
Defeat your opponent in this cage match through escape only.

There’s only one way to win in this match: escaping the cage! You must climb up the side.

A Title Shot Granted (RAW and Smackdown!)

Date: 3rd week of November: Show 16
Match Type: Tag Match, Tornado
Special Conditions: No DQ

The good news is that as promised there was a title shot granted at Survivor Series--the bad news is that it’s not for you. Instead, you’re booked in a tag match with a few twists. It’s a tornado tag, which means everyone is in the ring at the same time. There’s no need to tag your partner in and out of the match. Second, it’s no disqualification.

Anything goes now! If you snagged a weapon from underneath the ring and tried to use it against your opponents, the ref would instantly disqualify you. Not anymore. Snag weapons early and often and smack your opponents around. Weapons can deal a significant amount of damage in a short amount of time. It lowers their body health and can crush their spirit. Get the pin or a submission to complete the match. Pull off a special move after pounding your opponent to a pulp for a better finish.

Evolution Speaks (RAW), The New Ministry Speaks (Smackdown!)

Date: 4th week of November: Show 17
Match Type: Single Match
Special Conditions: None

You’ve finally been awarded a shot at a singles title. It’s on this show you begin a road toward the Intercontinental Title (if you’re on RAW) or the United States Title (if you’re on Smackdown!). This is a standard singles match against an average opponent--likely Christian on RAW or Mark Jindrak on Smackdown!--and you can simply follow the general strategies for winning a singles match to complete the task. Mix up your attacks to better avoid counters; perform your own counters successfully to increase your percentage rate; and finish off your opponent with a special move.

Intercontinental Title Match (RAW), United States Title Match (Smackdown!)

Date: 1st week of December: Show 18
Match Type: The Intercontinental Championship (RAW), The United States Championship (Smackdown!)
Special Conditions: Attack Batista with a sledgehammer (RAW), Attack Charlie Haas with a sledgehammer (Smackdown!).

You’ve reached the Intercontinental Title (RAW) or United States Title (Smackdown!) match! It’s actually against your old tag team partner and fellow Evolution member Batista (RAW) or New Ministry member Charlie Haas (Smackdown!).

But this match isn’t your typical battle. Triple H (RAW) or Undertaker (Smackdown!) has special orders for you. He wants you to grab a sledgehammer from underneath the ring and hit your opponent. This special condition must be met for the match to complete successfully.

You’ll find the sledgehammer under the mat. Just exit the ring and press the "X" button while standing against the ring to pull out the sledgehammer. Now all you have to do is use the sledgehammer on your opponent to complete the match. However, it’s better to conduct the match as normal; that way you can build an array of successful grapples and counters for a better attribute bonus. If you simply use the sledgehammer immediately, you do complete the match quickly but you also receive a low attribute bonus.

One Big Happy Family (RAW, Smackdown!)

Date: 2nd week of December: Show 19
Match Type: Tag Match
Special Conditions: None

You might expect that it’s time to complete your run to the Intercontinental (RAW) or United States (Smackdown!) title. However, your mates have something else in store. You’ve been booked for a simple tag team match when you expected to remain in singles competition and on your way to another title. Even worse, you’ve been matched up with a cruiserweight level WWE superstar (Lance Storm on RAW and Chavo Guerrero on Smackdown!) against some significant competition.

On RAW you’ll face the monster Kane and the rabid wolverine and recent World Heavyweight Champion Chris Benoit. On Smackdown! you’ll battle against recent United States Champion John Cena and recent WWE Champion Eddie Guerrero.

Kane is one of the toughest wrestlers in the game.
Kane is one of the toughest wrestlers in the game.

So it’s a standard tag team match but your competition is fierce. Kane is one of the toughest battles in the game (the RAW match is arguably the more difficult of the two). He’s extremely strong and durable and uses his special move with skill. Suffering at the hands of his Choke Slam from Hell can end the match very quickly. Stay away from him during his special state!

After the match, you witness your Evolution or New Ministry teammate (either Randy Orton or Booker T depending on the show) win their corresponding title. You’ve lost your title shot. To make the day even worse, you’re beat down by your Evolution or New Ministry "friends" in the squared circle. It’s no longer one big happy family.

Batista Has a Point... (RAW), Charlie Haas Has a Point... (Smackdown!)

Date: 3rd week of December: Show 20
Match Type: The Intercontinental Championship (RAW), The United States Championship (Smackdown!)
Special Conditions: None

Remember that title shot promised a few shows ago? It’s finally been granted! You have a shot at the Intercontinental Title (RAW) or the United States Title (Smackdown!). Also, you have some help--though so does your opponent. Your former tag team partner and then adversary and now friend again (Batista on RAW and Charlie Haas on Smackdown!) will be at ringside to help. But Triple H (RAW) and the Undertaker (Smackdown!) will also be there.

Although there will be some outside interference, conduct this battle like a typical singles match. Avoid your opponent’s outside interference and maintain your attention on your primary opponent. Use everything in your arsenal to win that title. Utilize your wrestler’s advantages. Keep your opponent on the defensive and on the mat using strikes and submission holds. Win the match to complete your run at your new title.

A Bounty on your Head (RAW, Smackdown!)

Date: 4th week of December: Show 21
Match Type: Single Match
Special Conditions: None

This is a standard singles match and your first battle after winning the Intercontinental (RAW) or United States (Smackdown!) title. The competition is stiffer now. You’ll likely face Shelton Benjamin on RAW and Rob Van Dam on Smackdown! There are no special rules or conditions, however; just defeat your competition via pinfall or submission. After the match you’re warned by HBK Shawn Michaels on RAW or John Cena on Smackdown! about a bounty that’s been put on your head. A sign of things to come...in fact, it’s the next show.

The Big Red Bounty Hunter (RAW), Bounty Hunter v.1.0 (Smackdown!)

Date: 1st week of January: Show 22
Match Type: Handicap Match
Special Conditions: None

That bounty mentioned last show is about to be collected in the form of a handicap match. The battle on RAW is potentially more difficult because it’s you against Kane and Randy Orton; on Smackdown! it’s you against Matt Hardy and Booker T.

The handicap match is two-on-one but conducted like a tag team match. You’ll face just one opponent at a time. Don’t allow your first opponent to tag out, especially if you’ve put a lot of work into wearing down a specific body part with holds and attacks.

Kane is brutal just like before. Stay away from big red when he’s in the special state. You’ll also likely need a series of special moves to weaken his big body. At the end, you sign a match against Randy Orton (RAW) or Booker T (Smackdown!). Your next battle is a Hell in the Cell match. Although it’s non-title, the match winner receives draw #29 in the upcoming Royal Rumble.

Hell in a Cell (RAW, Smackdown!)

Date: 2nd week of January: Show 23
Match Type: Hell in a Cell Match
Special Conditions: None

Win this Hell in a Cell match and receive draw #29 at next week’s Royal Rumble.
Win this Hell in a Cell match and receive draw #29 at next week’s Royal Rumble.

This is a Hell in a Cell match. It looks like a cage match but there’s no win by escape. Instead win by pin or submission hold. You face off against former ally (and title holder) Randy Orton on RAW or Booker T on Smackdown! You must win this match to continue the storyline. By winning the match you’re assured draw #29 at next week’s Royal Rumble. And if you can win the Royal Rumble, you’re guaranteed a title shot at Wrestlemania.

But standing in your way is Ric Flair (RAW) or Big Show (Smackdown!)--he’s draw #30 at the Royal Rumble! Depending on your show selection, Flair or Big Show beat you down after your Hell in a Cell post-match interview.

Royal Ramifications (RAW, Smackdown!)

Date: 3rd week of January: Show 24
Match Type: Royal Rumble
Special Conditions: None

You are joining the Royal Rumble in progress. If you’re on RAW, expect to see John Cena and Eddie Guerrero currently battling in the ring; if you’re on Smackdown!, expect to encounter Chris Benoit and HBK Shawn Michaels fighting in the ring. You enter as draw #29. Not long after you’ve entered the ring, Ric Flair (RAW) or Big Show (Smackdown!) enter as #30.

There are several approaches you can take here. You could scrap around as soon as you enter the ring and try to get one of the current superstars out as soon as possible. Or then again you could stand back and allow them to fight then wait for draw #30 (Flair or Big Show) to enter then battle the new entry. Even still you could wait until all are in the ring and take on someone other than Flair or Big Show (who are arguably the more difficult of the ring occupants).

You should definitely assist any superstar that’s kicking someone out of the ring. If there’s an opponent hanging on the ropes, move there quickly and start striking. Just keep striking until the superstar falls to the floor.

In general, the best tactic is to lay back and allow the computer to do most of the dirty work for you. Avoid battling Flair or Big Show one-on-one. Instead, assist any superstar going against these two adversaries. Be the last one in the ring to win the Royal Rumble and your title shot.

Prepare Yourself (RAW, Smackdown!)

Date: 4th week of January: Show 25
Match Type: Single Match
Special Conditions: None

You’ve reached the final stretch of shows leading up to the big confrontation at Wrestlemania that you earned at the Royal Rumble. This show is a standard singles match; there are no special conditions or rules. But the two WWE shows differ greatly. On RAW expect to face the monstrous Kane; on Smackdown! expect to face the agile Rey Mysterio.

You’ve likely faced both before during the course of the game. If you’re on RAW, it’s best to stay away from a slugfest with Kane. Utilize strikes and submission holds to keep Kane on the mat and away from grapples. When Kane reaches his special state, get away quickly. Even run out of the ring if necessary--his Choke Slam from Hell is devastating and he uses it very well.

Mysterio is fast and counters well.
Mysterio is fast and counters well.

Rey Mysterio is quick with excellent counter ability but he’s certainly not as strong or durable as Kane. You can stand toe-to-toe with Mysterio and utilize your grapples and heavy strikes. Wear him down and finish him off with a special move.

Y2J (RAW), Latino Heat (Smackdown!)

Date: 1st week of February: Show 26
Match Type: Single Match
Special Conditions: None

This show is another standard singles match. In it you’re called out to the ring by one of each show’s most popular superstars. On RAW expect to battle Chris Jericho; on Smackdown! expect to face off against Eddie Guerrero.

Mix up your attacks against these skilled superstars. Focus on your wrestler’s strengths, such as primarily using submission holds if you have a high submission rating, or using strikes and grapples for high strength. After the match, Ric Flair (RAW) or Big Show (Smackdown!), ambushes you.

Similar Aspirations (RAW, Smackdown!)

Date: 2nd week of February: Show 27
Match Type: Single Match
Special Conditions: None

In this show, one of each show’s premiere wrestlers catches you before the match and reveals some similar aspirations. On RAW you’ll battle Shawn Michaels, the Heartbreak Kid. On Smackdown! expect to face John Cena, one of the most popular rising stars in the WWE. Both are highly rated wrestlers. You likely won’t be able to roll over these as you did some of the lesser skilled superstars earlier in the game.

But the strategies remain the same. Mix up your strikes, grapples, submission holds, etc. to better avoid the counter move. Be ready to perform your own counters to gain the upper hand on each superstar. Hit your special move during your special state (twice if possible) and keep your opponent on the defensive.

Playing the Wrong Game... (RAW), One Foot in the Grave... (Smackdown!)

Date: 3rd week of February: Show 28
Match Type: Fatal Four Way
Special Conditions: Use your finishing move on both Ric Flair and Triple H (RAW), Use your finishing move on both Big Show and Undertaker (Smackdown!).

You’re booked for a fatal four way match. It’s you and your new friend (HBK on RAW, Cena on Smackdown!) who promises to "have your back" during the match against two members of your former group: Ric Flair and Triple H on RAW and Big Show and the Undertaker on Smackdown!

Each wrestler is in the ring at the same time. There are no teams per se; it’s a free-for-all so you can actually expect to see Ric Flair grappling Triple H or Big Show slamming the Undertaker.

Complete this fatal four way by using your special move on the two members of your former group.
Complete this fatal four way by using your special move on the two members of your former group.

You aren’t expected to win this match. Instead, there’s a special condition that will end the match immediately. You must use your special finishing move on both of your former allies. On RAW, use your finishing move on both Ric Flair and Triple H. On Smackdown! you must use your finishing move on both Big Show and the Undertaker. Match ends once the conditions have been met.

The key is to build your special meter. Mix up your moves early on so you’re on the offensive. You could even take your aggression out on HBK or Cena and steer clear of the more difficult opponents. Attempt to build your special meter until you have two finishing moves available; though naturally you could pull off two moves during a single special state. If you aren’t engaged in battle, use taunts to raise your special meter while the other wrestlers are occupied.

After completing both moves, you’re double-crossed by HBK on RAW or Cena on Smackdown! So much for similar aspirations!

Payback Time for HBK (RAW), Payback Time for Cena (Smackdown!)

Date: 4th week of February: Show 29
Match Type: Hardcore Match
Special Conditions: None

The title of the match says it all. It is payback time for the double-cross on the previous show. To make revenge even sweeter, the match is booked as a hardcore match. That means it’s no disqualification and weapons are permitted. You’ll find weapons strewn around the ring; you can pick up more by searching underneath the mat. Just exit the ring, stand against the ring, and then press the "X" button to retrieve a new weapon.

Win the match via the weapons. You can quickly reduce your opponent’s health and spirit with continuous weapon strikes. Follow a long barrage with your finishing move to put a fork in this match.

The Dirtiest Player in the Game (RAW), The Largest Athlete in the World (Smackdown!)

Date: 1st week of March: Show 30
Match Type: Single Match
Special Conditions: None

It’s just two weeks to Wrestlemania and you’re booked in one of the toughest matches so far in the game. On RAW you battle the dirtiest player in the game, Ric Flair; on Smackdown! you fight the largest athlete in the world, Big Show.

Both are extremely skilled, though different beasts. Ric Flair is quicker (even at his age) and can counter effectively. He’s also quite durable. Don’t expect to gain the upper hand quickly, pull of a single finishing move, and win the match. Like Kane earlier in the game, it may take several finishing moves (in succession if possible) to take Flair out for good. Ric Flair uses the figure-four leg lock special move. When Flair is in his special state, either stay away completely or hang near the ropes so you can break the submission hold easier.

Be prepared to see this view of Big Show often.
Be prepared to see this view of Big Show often.

Big Show is similar to Kane. He’s extremely strong, durable, and pull off a series of heavily damaging moves before you can counter or escape. Big Show’s special moves are also quite powerful. It’s best to keep him on the mat as much as possible. Use strikes from a distance to get him on the ground or tied up in the ropes and use your submission holds to weaken him. Like Kane and Flair, expect to need several finishing moves to inflict major damage before you can get the pin.

Triple H Has Made This Personal! (RAW), The Undertaker Has Made This Personal! (Smackdown!)

Date: 2nd week of March: Show 31
Match Type: Tag Match
Special Conditions: None

It’s the last match before Wrestlemania and it’s the only mixed tag match in the storyline. It’s you and Victoria versus Triple H (RAW) or Undertaker (Smackdown!) with Molly Holly. Conduct the match like a standard tag match. You can get some practice against your upcoming Wrestlemania opponent or tag out your female partner. Win this match by pin or submission (there are no special rules or conditions) to reach the game’s final showdown.

Wrestlemania (RAW, Smackdown!)

Date: 3rd week of March: Show 32
Match Type: The World Heavyweight Championship (RAW), The WWE Heavyweight Championship (Smackdown!), Iron Man Match
Special Conditions: None

The moment has arrived! This is the final match in Day of Reckoning’s story mode. It’s Wrestlemania and it’s the championship match (World Heavyweight on RAW or WWE Heavyweight on Smackdown!) against one of the toughest competitors in the game, either Triple H on RAW or the Undertaker on Smackdown!

To further stack the deck against you, Triple H or the Undertaker selected the type of match for this championship. It’s an Iron Man match. In this match, there’s a set time limit. The winner is the wrestler that gains the most pin falls or submissions within the time limit, which will be 15 minutes. Note that in this match you can be counted out. If you hang outside the ring and the ref reaches 20, you’ve been counted out and lose ground in the match.

Stay away from your opponent when he’s in the special state. Otherwise, you’re looking at this.
Stay away from your opponent when he’s in the special state. Otherwise, you’re looking at this.

Don’t get too far behind early on. Mix up your strikes and grapples and stay even with Triple H or the Undertaker. You can get behind by one or two but it’s hard to catch up significantly if you become drastically behind in the match. But it is possible to string several pin falls together via your special moves. Triple H and the Undertaker do possess high durability so it will take a few finishing moves to weaken their body and spirit enough to get a pin.

So when you are in your special state, complete as many finishing moves as possible. A few successful blows and you might be able to enter your special state again and continue the barrage. When you do get a pin, stay on your opponent. He’s likely regained some spirit but you still have the advantage, especially if you’re close to another special state.

Note that it is even possible to "run away" if you are ahead in the match. For instance, say you’re up 6 pins to 4 with time running down. Instead of taking your chances inside the ring, get outside and just run around the ring. The ref will start a count but you should have no trouble getting back inside before being counted out (it seems Triple H or the Undertaker scurry back to the ring well before the twenty count). Gain more pin falls at the end of 15 minutes to win the championship and complete the story mode.

Chapter 6: Create a Superstar

This section provides a sample run through of WWE Day of Reckoning’s create a superstar mode. Using this mode you can create any wrestler you wish--real or imaginary. You can create some of your favorite legends or fill Day of Reckoning’s roster with some of the WWE stars left out (Bradshaw or Lita for instance). For this section we’ll create one of the most popular stars ever: Stone Cold Steve Austin.

Stone Cold Steve Austin

Certainly one of the best ways to create an accurate superstar is to find good pictures of the superstar in action. Check stonecold.com for a good headshot of the former WWE superstar.

Select the create a superstar mode and choose male type 02 for your body style. It seems the closest to his build initially and nearly his attire. You may want to adjust his height and reduce it slightly (he is 6’2", which puts him slightly shorter than Triple H’s 6’4"). Do this in the figure option under whole body.

Select his profile and change his name from "default" to Stone Cold. You could also make his strategy "dirty," put him on RAW, and make him a brawler. Later you can take his picture so it appears on the wrestler select screen.

Choose the attributes section. This will obviously be fairly subjective. Also, your available points depend on how much of the story mode you’ve completed. If you have completed the entire story mode, you have 800 points to use. If you’ve completed it twice, you have 1,000 points to use. Emphasize Stone Cold’s strength, durability, and charisma. Counter and submission would be middle of the road with speed being the lowest attribute.

For Stone Cold’s move set, purchase "Template 15" from the Shopzone under the moves section. This is Stone Cold Steve Austin’s move set complete with the Stone Cold Stunner finishing move!

Stone Cold Steve Austin enters on his ATV! You can create this or any other WWE legend using the create a superstar mode.
Stone Cold Steve Austin enters on his ATV! You can create this or any other WWE legend using the create a superstar mode.

Select Stone Cold’s entrance. Choose to create a detailed entrance. Select a sample template. The primary part of the entrance you want to use is under the "Others" heading. Select vehicle and choose the "buggy" option. You must have completed the entire story mode to have the buggy option available. It’s Stone Cold’s ATV! This was recently seen on RAW when Stone Cold was the show’s sheriff.

Now it’s time to adjust his appearance. Let’s start with the easy items: his attire.

Select appearance then accessories. Choose wrist, then both, and then form. Select the "Wrist Band Short" option. Go to knee. You can choose both or just left or right and select the "Knee Brace" option. You could put a knee pad on the other knee if you wish. Select footwear and choose the "Ring Shoes Short 01" (or 02) option.

Exit to the previous menus and select the body option. Go to body, form, and select the "Normal" option. Next select the bottom wear choice, base, and then form and select "Short Tights 01". All of these default to black, which is perfect for your Stone Cold character.

Select the head option. Give him no hairstyle: he’s bald! Select mustache and choose "Mustache 04" and adjust the color to a dirty brown. Select eyes and chose "Male Eye Wrinkle 07" in the eyelashes option for Stone Cold’s furrowed look. Choose "Normal Blue 01" for the iris. Under eye brow choose "Thin" and select the nose and mouth forms to match your picture (normal looks pretty good). Give him wrinkles but only "Wrinkle 01" as the rest are too drastic.

Move to the figure option and select the face figure. It is here you will make adjustments to Stone Cold’s face. Add some depth and width to your current face. Make the largest adjustments to "deep" and "depth" placing them in positive numbers around 20. Select the jaw option and reduce the depth significantly (around -80 or more). Also pull the chin up using the vertical option to around 50. Make tweaks to the eyebrows, eyes, nose, and mouth to match your picture.

Return to the figure option and select the body figure. Make adjustments to the crown and head by reducing the ledge and depth of the crown. Give him a thick neck under the option; it’s pretty much as wide as his face. Increase the width of his shoulders, upper arms, forearms, and chest slightly. He’s also stocky so increase the width of the abdomen, waist, thighs, and calves.

Now he’s ready for action! Test out Stone Cold. Enjoy the "buggy" entrance if you have completed story mode and were able to add it to your Stone Cold character. Recreate some of Stone Cold’s great matches such as his Wrestlemania 13 battle against Bret Hart or his numerous classics against The Rock.
