WoW's Legion Expansion Is Almost Here, Watch the Launch Trailer Now

More than a decade after its release, Blizzard Entertainment continues to support World of Warcraft with new expansions. The latest of these, Legion, comes out tomorrow, August 30, on PC.

Now, Blizzard has released Legion's launch trailer. It mainly sets up the story, which sees the evil Burning Legion return to Azeroth. Also, the stakes sound pretty high: "Should you fail, all worlds will burn," a character says.

Legion was announced one year ago this month. Two of the standout features are its new Broken Isles region and the demon hunter class, while it also raises the level cap from 100 to 110. It's not too late to pre-buy ($50 standard/$70 digital deluxe) to secure some of the bonuses for doing that, including immediate access to the demon hunter class and a character level boost to 100.

The expansion will unlock in North America at midnight PT, which comes out to 3 AM ET. Check out this post to find out when the game will become available where you live.

Previous World of Warcraft expansions have included The Burning Crusade(2007), Wrath of the Lich King (2008), Cataclysm (2010), Mists of Pandaria (2012), and Warlords of Draenor (2014).

Legion may not be World of Warcraft's last expansion. Lead designer Tom Chilton told GameSpot last summer that Blizzard is already thinking about "more expansion packs." None have been officially announced yet, but launching new expansions historically helps subscriber figures grow.

Blizzard would like to see this happen, as the 5.5 million subscriber number disclosed in August 2015 represented a nine-year low for the game. The figure may have grown since then, or it could have dipped; we don't know because Blizzard has stopped reporting subscriber numbers.

Blizzard's new plan for expansions is to release them faster. In order to do this, the game's development team grew in terms of head count; as of October 2014, it's bigger than ever before.
