World Rally Championship screeches onto PSP

The officially licensed PS2 racing series hits the starting line in portable form; first details inside.

The PlayStation 2's World Rally Championship series is making its way to the PSP under the name WRC: FIA World Rally Championship. The latest issue of Famitsu revealed the first details of the game, which is slated for release in Japan this March.

The biggest difference in WRC: FIA World Rally Championship for the PSP is that the game allows multiplayer games. The racer will allow up to eight players to simultaneously compete with each other via wireless connection in ad hoc mode.

Like previous releases, WRC: FIA World Rally Championship is officially licensed from the FIA international racing league and includes all the machines that raced in 2005, as well as six concept cars. The game features 16 stages based on real courses from the World Rally Championship's 2005 season, including tracks in Spain, Mexico, New Zealand, Greece, Great Britain, Turkey, Argentina, Cyprus, France, and Japan.

Realistic weather and time of day will affect not only the game's visuals, but also each car's handling--for example, driving will be a lot tougher when there's rain or snow covering the road. Cars in the game are modeled after their real-life counterparts and will take and show damage when they crash.

How about releasing one of the other three or four games in the series on the PS2? Throw us a fricken' bone here.

I've played the UK release... it's been available since Nov 18th in the UK. Graphics are very nice, same with car models and damage. The physics are perfectly suited to a handheld rally game. But... and this is what killed it for me, the championship mode is total arcade nonsense. every stage you start 10th... and have a target posistion to make. It's nothing like actual rally (like depected in Colin McRae Rally 2005). And back in November I emailed Travelers Tales (developer) and they said this and F1 have no North American release planned.

First off, I own a PSP. I was the first to pre-order a PSP 12 mths before it was released in my area. People didn't even know what it was @ that time around here. I picked it up the day it was released. I had very high hopes for the PSP for gaming. I couldn't have been more misled. Okay...now that I have that off my chest.... Racing games require PRECISE analog input , period. The PSP simply is not up to the task. PSP only has one cheesy pseudo-analog nub thingy for control. It is virtually useless. Jerk car left, jerk car right...ad nauseum. Furthermore, the placement of said nub is completely non-ergonomic. What Sony were thinking when they layed out the control scheme (assuming they were thinking at all) is beyond me. It's rather ironic that there are so many racing games out for the PSP. However, most of these games are very forgiving/non-realistic driving games. Gran Turismo 4 or anything close to simulation racing will be difficult, if not impossible to pull off on the hand-held IMO. By the way, why didn't Sony put the analog nub above the directional pad???????? I'll NEVER figure that one out. P.S. I love rally car racing games...but I'm forced to pass on all racing games on PSP.

Ya I'm stick of being shafted on rally games in the US. Seems America likes to race in circles, or a straight line, rather than a rollercoaster of a course; if you know what I'm saying. Rally racing games are amazing, and ripe with potential, especially online. God I hope CMR comes to 360 in the states, atleast the other CMR games were released here on XB.

I never heard a rally car screeching tires....

Don't get too excited, folks. There's almost zero chance of them releasing it in the states. Sony never brought a single WRC title over (BAM! published the first one, and look how well that turned out...) , despite all four games being excellent. There's no reason for them to start now.

Ya, I loved WRC1 for the PS2. Sadly, none of the 4 others were released here, or I at least never saw WRC2 in any store. Tell us what we want to know, is there any chance this is coming to the US?
