World of Warcraft movie to be set in game universe

Film's director reveals he has a level-72 character, movie will adhere to the storyline and lore of the series; IMDb listing projects 2013 release.

Last week Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time surpassed the Tomb Raider franchise and became the highest-grossing video-game-based film of all time. This week, the director of the upcoming and still unnamed World of Warcraft motion picture shed some light on the project.

Interviewed outside the Saturn Awards in Los Angeles by Collider, Sam Raimi gushed details on the film, praised Blizzard's art design, and said the project is still very much in preproduction.

Raimi says the World of Warcraft movie will be set entirely in the game's universe.

"We're still working on the story," Raimi said. "We have a 40-page document that needs a lot more work...we're finding the characters and through the characters we're finding the story...we're trying to create realistic characters that can live in the world of Warcraft, as though you were in the game itself."

Speaking of the project's allure, Raimi said he loves the game's use of scale and its monsters and called its locations "incredibly [and] engrossingly terrifying and exciting." He said the film will take place entirely in World of Warcraft's universe, and not feature the real world a la Tron.

When pressed for comment regarding how the director relates to the massively multiplayer game, Raimi said he has leveled two characters in Blizzard's game. The first was a level 29 Shaman that was "accidentally deleted," and the second was an unspecified level 72 character.

In October 2009, Raimi revealed that Saving Private Ryan and The Patriot screenwriter Robert Rodat was on board with the project. The Internet Movie Database is listing the film as arriving in 2013, but no official date has been released by Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures, the companies distributing and producing the film.

Raimi is the director of the multibillion-dollar-grossing Spider-Man films and the horror cult classics Evil Dead and Army of Darkness. His most recent effort was the recent Drag Me to Hell, a horror thriller that won critical acclaim despite a PG-13 rating and so-so box-office returns. The Warcraft film will be produced by Atlas Entertainment's Charles "Chuck" Roven, Legendary Pictures' Thomas Tull, and Raimi producing partner Joshua Donen. Blizzard Entertainment's senior vice president of creative development Chris Metzen will coproduce.

Currently, World of Warcraft is one of the most popular massively multiplayer role-playing games in the world, accruing some 11.5 million subscribers worldwide since its launch in late 2004.

Idk... unlike Prince of Persia and Tomb Raider, WoW is a MMO... personally, I don't think this will go well. If it doesn't go well, I predict an angry WoW mob outside Sam's front door.... if it does go well, I predict a bunch of WoW-movie believers to start bragging for a good 6 months or so.....

I got into WoW way too late.. After i had hitten End Game in AION and failed on Miragents like 15 times i moved onto WoW.. At first it was a breath of fresh air, then i started doing instances, getting uber items, then 3 lvl's later i'd do another instance, which would drop even more uber items.. And so on.. I never liked instances in AION (in fact one of the worse things i like in any MMO is instances lol) and it hadn't changed for WoW.. So i tried PvP.. But when you die in PvP you don't really lose anything, so the "thrill" of it was over.. In AION when you died in PvP you lost Abyss Points that could've tooken you hours to get, which was reason enough to stay alive.. I also liked AIONs faction vrs faction pvp, i didn't find any of that in WOW.. Besides Wintergrasp which i wasn't gonna instance until lvl 80 to get too.. I don't know.. For those of you that still like WoW more power to you.. But i would give ANYTHING to be able to step back in time and give WoW a shot when it first came out.. I've heard of it's glorious pvp and raids back then; before blizzard held you hand each step of the way.. Seriously.. if anyone knows of a good MMO that has good Faction Vrs Faction PVP please send me a msg lol.. I've been thinkin of trying Fallen Earth or WAR.. Right now i'am playing EvE and having a blast but i sorta miss the fantasy setting from other MMO's..

they really are bleeding Warcraft dry, give it up Blizzard, Warcraft has had its time in the spotlight, just let it die with some shred of its former self (if there is even a shred left)

I still wish it was someone else, other than Sam Raimi directing the movie.

@cain19822004 That is true. If a movie is crap, it's crap. Look at the book to movie "Eragon". Great books, horrible movie.

cain19822004
cain19822004

@Fusco1980 That shouldn't matter, anyone interested enough in turning a games story into a movie should want to try to preserve as much as possible, not rape it so it's unrecognisable, the movies that Uwe Boll directs are complete flops, even people who don't like games don't like his movies.

So why is it a game like WoW gets a fanatical director who wants the translate the story directly to screen, but any game I've ever had an interest in has been changed six ways from sunday so it's only recognisable by title alone, Uwe Boll and Paul W.S. Anderson, I'm looking at you!

RussianRAGE: Sean Connery is a dwarf hunter going by looks and accent. Brad Pitt is the Paladin. He could also be warrior/rogue. Paris Hilton will never be in this movie.

I hope this is epic on LOTR scale. A live action Warcraft movie is going to be drowned in CGI though, let's hope they can pull it off nicely.

Blizzard created extraordinary cinematic at Starcraft 2, have you seen already?? when Zeratul met Kerrigan (Queen Of Blades), the animation is very fluid with highly detailed art design, also fighting scene is really cool!! why would they give it to Hollywood crap! :? I hope Sam Raimi didn't messd up!!

It should be a warcraft movie, i think adding the "world of" is wrong.

So we're going to have a bunch of real people with gold exclamation marks on their heads, and the movie's narrative will be told strictly through walls of text right?

Why would you make the movie based on the fourth part of the series (I'm not counting Orcs & humans, it had so little story you could roll it into 2)? Massive continuity lockout.

Rami made some awesome movies with Evil dead 1+2 and Army of Darkness. With that said: Spider-man (all of them) were 3 movies about some Emo Jerk off who was either dancing down the street like a Glee actor or crying because he just wanted to be a normal guy...pathetic. Heres to hoping he doesn't this also.

first Avatar, then WarCraft, maaan, this is a new age for movies, a great one that - those who like the genre - will change everything in the entertainment industry.

I don't know why Blizzard aren't doing this whole film themselves. They know how to write a great story and great characters (look at warcraft and starcraft) and they have amazing CGI skills at their disposal. Just look at the trailers and in game films. I think they are taking a big risk by letting somebody from the "outside" of the Blizzard team come in and take control of the film production and direction.

Do you guys think that to enjoy the movie I will have had to play the game? I never really got into World of Warcraft, but I would still like to see the movie. Hopefully they will make it so people who don't play the game can understand what's going on.

I'm excited about a WoW movie (so I'll probably be disappointed), but unsure of the people attached to it. At least it SOUNDS like Raimi appreciates and understands the lore of the Warcraft series. Plus, if Chris Metzen has some measure of creative control or influence at all, it should be a pretty legitimate WoW movie. Metzen's one of Blizzard's artistic geniuses and he's helped develop the Warcraft universe since the beginning.

Having a great director definitely gives this movie some potential to be a good, if not great, video game adaptation. Here's hoping!!Here's hoping a few naysayers shut up and actually try the game for once too! ;D

I honestly cannot imagine how anyone could turn World of Warcraft into a good movie. They may as well just totally seal its fate and change the director to Uwe Boll. At least that way the movie would give me some laughs. If I even bother to see it, that is.

Madrak_Arakeen
Madrak_Arakeen

Frankly, the movie hasn't been made. Understandably, everyone's a bit jittery about this video-game-to-movie adaptation. But seriously, wait until the movie's finished. Blizzard's storywriting talent merging with Raimi's screenwriting crew should produce some spectacular results. I refuse to judge until the end product is available for viewing.
