World of Warcraft accounts at risk, Blizzard warns

Blizzard acknowledges a recent increase in unauthorized logins via Battle.net and mobile armory application.

by

Blizzard has issued a warning to World of Warcraft players after a recent increase in unauthorized logins via Battle.net and the mobile armory application.

Affected account owners who are not using the Blizzard Authenticator are in the process of being emailed with details on how to reset their account. World of Warcraft customer support will restore in-game gold and items on affected accounts upon request, Blizzard adds.

Writing on Battle.net, Blizzard says that no method of account security is guaranteed, but that passwords should be regularly changed.

"At this time we have no reason to believe that accounts currently using an authenticator are at risk," added a Blizzard customer service representative.

In response to the situation, Blizzard has taken the World of Warcraft mobile armory application offline temporarily. Blizzard says the website bug was fixed on Monday.

WoW is like weed, you can quit anytime as you can go back to it anytime, and it's the best forever <3

I don't understand why everyone doesn't use authenticators for every game.  Just hit the button and get a random bunch of numbers, you type them in and done.  Easy.

Never used an authenticator.

Raided hardcore for 6 years.

11 characters and 9 90's later and 114kgold left after quitting of boredom...

and still never been hacked.

Authentication codes can be intercepted. Giving you false data that leads you to entering your password and giving the interceptor access to your account password and then some. Been a long time so not sure exact details of how a guildy explained it, but yeah. Screw your corehound pet, I'm good.

Blizzard scare tactics to subscribe to more authenticators. Woo~hoo~

/fail more Blizz

everyone as a precaution, please delete any credit card/sensitive & personal information just in case

better safe then sorry, protect yourselves

I find it incredible that Blizzard uses a password system that is Not case sensitive and then wonders why hackers have a field day... this simple, foolish move makes owning an authenticator mandatory.

The best part of wow is that you pay $15/month for basic and earn achievements to play premium.

WoW is having a slow enough  death. So Blizzard would come out with its WoW 2

Acti-blizzard is a scam artist.

What a shame Blizzard was ruined by greed.

I'm still playing since vanilla and I can safely say that the authenticator is the best 20euro I've ever invested in something. Haven't had a problem with my account since I got it.

@telaros uh yeah authenticators are free if you have a mobile device.  and if you can afford to play WoW you most likely have a smart phone or ipod touch.

@Zilched It's not like their giving you a root canal.  Only 7 dollars and a free pet when you get it.  Some just will bitch about anything.  Oh see the pet is enticing you to buy it.  So what if it is.

@WiteLite Probably a fake e-mail trying to steal your password w/ a keylogger.

@cboye18 do people still play retail ... huh?  Last time I heard there wasnt a mass exodus of 8+ million subscribers.  Of course people still play LEGITIMATELY.  If you want to play on your hacked severs with pay2win gear go for it, many people dont want that experience.

@baxwam As far as I know there is no WoW 2 in development and Titan is back to the drawing board.

@enoslives7 Diablo 3 was indeed sub-par, but don't consider one misstep ruination.

colt_a

@Dark_Arcitekt 8 million people still do, 2-3 times the amount of any MMO like it.

Sadly people just won't move on.  They have 8 years invested into that game, they don't want to just throw it away.

@Darkhol0w OMG! Blizzard charges money for an authenticator? And people buy it? No wonder the game is never going away.

orthodox1976

@Darkhol0w I've always wanted to ask somebody in your position this... how can you play the same game for 8+ years?

I'm not trying to be insulting AT ALL. I'm genuinely curious. How can you NOT be sick of that game?

GrandMaster555
GrandMaster555

@DarkAztaroth @baxwam well Titan and Destiny are sci fi MMOFPS.  Why would they compete with their own product.  If anything Destiny just ate their sibling pre-birth Venture Bros. Style.

drokmore

@colt_a @Dark_Arcitekt That and the other options frequently fall short. New MMORPGs are fun at first but then everyone moves on and a large community doesn't exist, so back to WOW.

@cuddlyfuzzle @Darkhol0w They actually have a free authenticator app you can get for your smartphone and they have a dial-in system if you don't want to pay for the physical authenticator and don't have a smartphone.

Darkhol0w
Darkhol0w

@orthodox1976 @Darkhol0w Because I started to play it for the story and after you invest so many years in your character (not too much into secondary characters) then it's quite hard to move away from it. I've had my fair share of drama during my raiding days or whatnot which led to transfers, but I all bounced back.

With that said, after playing it for so long, it still remains the best MMO out there if you are looking for end game content.

I have tried a lot of MMO's on the side to see if they are different (the ones who either went F2P recently because I'm not going to sub to another game if I already am for WoW) that mostly feel pretty much the same. Nothing has changed so I'm sticking to WoW until I get to kill Sargeras (supposedly the big bad in this whole "story").

PS: Things have become boring when you get to farm raids 3 times a week and waiting on the next patch update which will give us new tier/instances and all that good stuff.

Other than that, I'm usually playing something else aside those 3 raiding days.

DarkAztaroth
DarkAztaroth

@orthodox1976 @Darkhol0w The updates are big enough so that you don't feel like it's too old, the older content is pretty much obselete, so it mostly is like a new game when an expack comes out.

In most case it's not like we only play that everyday either, I play many other games too.

isv666
isv666

@orthodox1976 @Darkhol0w Not sure about Dark there, but as for me, I just enjoy the game and they update it frequently enough to keep me interested.  It helps that I have friends and family who play, also.  I don't play as much as when I first started, but still keep an active subscription.  I don't consider it much different than playing something like a sports franchise every year or multiplayer in a game like CoD which sees yearly releases.

cuddlyfuzzle
cuddlyfuzzle

@vicsrealms Probably not. You seem to have an addictive type of personality so why not try crack cocaine.

vicsrealms
vicsrealms

@drokmore @colt_a @Dark_Arcitekt Yep, I have tried Aion, Guild Wars, Guild Wars 2, SWTOR, Tera, Rift, and I have always gone back to WoW.  I'm hoping Elder Scrolls Online will change that

krystyla

@petez34 @krystyla @DJKrayz_basic i went to watch Monster University in between but nice you noticed. A hunter and a warrior (SOR) at 90 a dk at 85 a Warlock at 80 (2nd SOR) a Mage at 63 and a monk at idk somewhere between 70 and 80 with zygor and heirlooms leveling becomes quite fast

Edit: Still better than some signature on wow forums stating 28 85ers that made me even me feel good about my social life while i still played wow

orthodox1976
orthodox1976

@Darkhol0w @jessie82 @isv666 Ah, I guess taking breaks is the key, plus having the constant updates probably helps, too... Makes sense. Oh, and knowing a lot people IRL who play would make it more interesting, as well.

I played for about a year on vanilla. It was one of the best games I've EVER played, even now this far away from my experience with it. I don't think I would be able to return to it though, but if they make a WoW 2 I'll buy a new PC just for that. LOL (Yeah, me and about 10 million other people, eh? Heh..)

I am looking  forward to seeing what Blizzard's new MMO will be. They've been working on one for years now.
