World of Tanks studio acquires Gas Powered Games

MMO developer and publisher Wargaming picks up Seattle-based Dungeon Siege and Demigod developer for undisclosed sum.

World of Tanks studio Wargaming announced today it had acquired Dungeon Siege and Demigod developer Gas Powered Games.

Terms of the deal were not divulged.

Gas Powered Games canceled its Kickstarter campaign for the RPG/RTS hybrid Wild Man last week, just days before the campaign was to end. The fate of Wild Man is unclear.

At the time, Gas Powered Games CEO Chris Taylor said the company was exploring new ways to keep the company afloat.

According to the announcement, a "contingent of veteran developers" from the studio, including Taylor, will stay on following the acquisition. Gas Powered Games laid off a significant portion of its staff last month.

Wargaming last month purchased F.E.A.R. 3 developer Day 1 Studios for $20 million.

Hmmm, do they really need 2 studios? I didn't think world of tanks was that popular...

Dammit Eddie, once again I have to correct your POS copy&paste articles- it's "Wildman" not "Wild Man" man.

In other thoughts- I do hope this doesn't constrain GPG' creativity in any way. Hoping for the best-but we all know what this could mean in the back of our heads.

Damn, I knew the 'World of' games were popular but I had no idea they were doing this well, good on them though.

I'll focus on the positive:

Chris Taylor hasn't realized his potential since he started Gas Powered Games.  Total Annihilation is still his high point and that was with Cavedog.  Partnering with another company and not running the entire operation  might be just what he needs.

I won't mention the potential negative (utter ruin) because it is obvious and likely.

It's amazing what a small company from Belarus achieved with a F2P mmo!

I remember meeting Chris Taylor at EB Games in Redmond, WA back when Dungeon Siege 1 came out; he was there to sign copies of the game.

Memories..... :)

Yay :D I'm so happy! I pledged $150 toward Wildman and have done everything else in my power to try and make Wildman a reality and save GasPoweredGames. I hope they make a pure RTS in collaboration with Wargaming. I can't wait to play whatever they develop!

The game was actually called "Wildman" and not "Wild Man".

Good news, GPG and Chris would be in good hands with other PC devs/publishers.

acquired Day 1 Studios and Gas Powered Games almost at the same time,

that's quite an achievement

So this is the big tight lipped secret Chris was talking about. Well good for him and for GPG.

This is huge, HUGE news! I'm so excited! Oh my God, I think I'm going to pass out.

...oh, I read that wrong. I thought it said "The McRib to be a permanent addition to the McDonald's menu."

Please, please, PLEASE don't make a Free-to-Play Supreme Commander. I'm so tired of the Free-To-Play phenomenon that ends up either costing WAY more cash than a retail release or eats up all your time GRINDING rather than having fun just to unlock all the features...

@dr_jashugan

Square Enix owns it, Chris had to sell it in order to keep GPG running without firing anyone in the process. Great man.

@queuing_for_PS4 I'm glad that the company that made Dungeon Siege won't run out of gas anytime soon. Tanks Wargaming, tanks a lot!
