World in Conflict's Cold War goes hot

Beta invite and History Channel DVD pad out preorder package for action strategy game; set for September release.

Games entering beta are a good indication a release date is nigh, and World in Conflict proves to be no exception. Massive Entertainment today announced its Cold War action strategy game will see release this September.

Massive also announced a hefty preorder incentive package, which is now available. Customers who preorder World in Conflict will receive an invite to and extra multiplayer maps for a beta event in July, a demo, and access to multiplayer-specific perks. Also included will be Modern Marvels: Strategic Air Command, a History Channel-produced DVD that details the agency overseeing the US nuclear program throughout the Cold War.

Set in an alternate history, World in Conflict blends tactical real-time strategy gameplay with first-person-shooter action. For more on the game, check out GameSpot's recent coverage.

If you like RTS games with intense teamplay (and own a headset) then this game is a must for your collection. I have not seen a more fun RTS since the days of Red Alert 2 and Total Annhilation.

Console fanboys are killing PC gaming. "Too bad its only coming out on PC"? Thank god for PC-only releases, dual-releases suck ass and there are some games that should have never been developed for consoles at all. Massive rocks, keep at it boys.

Lonlynight, oxm has a feature on it. Its on page 80 and is apparantly 70%done. Proof that its coming to consoles, I think so. Ok mabye not they got the publisher wrong.

To all those hoping it would be ported to the consoles, dream on, it will be nearly impossible

I can't wait for this game. I want to take advantage of the map editor, so I could make some awesome maps. As for the console guys wanting a port, I wouldn't bet on it. The game is really graphic intensive and would be downgraded for the console due to memory limitation. Besides, Endwar is going to the consoles, that should suffice.

The beta is so polished it could be called a demo by today's standards. Massive has been supporting it every step of the way, quickly fixing bugs, changing the map rotation, etc. Massive Entertainment "Massgate" online system is perfect so far. I am very impressed with this company, and even moreso the game.

this developer won't port this to the consoles, the camera controls alone dictate the mouse and keyboard. only EA wants to port their rts experiences to the consoles, nice try but it feels like the difference between golden eye multiplayer and quake, maybe ten years from now they will manage RTS games right, but for the time being if you like the genre a good pc is a worth while investment. and mac lovers can now duel install operating systms real easy.

Wow, crazy, console fanboys complaining about a game coming out only on the PC... man where were you with the Total War series, Company of Heroes, Stalker, or Civ just to name things off my desktop. I wouldn't hold your breath, it's probably not comnig to consoles, and if it does it will just be ten times worse, like BFME2 or CnC 3 Hmm, a history channel DVD comes with it? Might just have to pre-order it then.

"boring game not so real company of heroes is much more better " LOL? From a military viwepoint World in Conflict is far more representative of real combat than Company of Heroes..

By far, one of the best RTS I've ever played and the most beautiful looking RTS at that. The game has the best explosions I've ever seen in a game to date.

comthitnuong There WILL be a single player campaign focused on being the US of A defending the homeland and then eventually taking the battle to Europe. Just do a little searching through the articles and you should be able to find something. As for the pre-order: since I've already played both single player AND multi player, I'm almost certain that I will be pre-ordering it. Now it's just a question of where and through whom we can order it... PEACE
