Wonderbook: Book of Spells launching Nov. 13

Sony shipping stand-alone version of J.K. Rowling collaboration for Sony's new platform at $40 and Move bundle at $80 this fall.

by

Writing on the PlayStation Blog, Sony announced that Wonderbook: Book of Spells will launch in the United States on November 13. The game will be released in two versions, the first of which is a $40 stand-alone iteration that includes the game and a Wonderbook peripheral.

Book of Spells comes to life in November.

The second bundle is the Wonderbook: Book of Spells Move pack (at right), which includes the game, a Wonderbook peripheral, a PlayStation Eye camera, and a PlayStation Move motion controller for $80.

Book of Spells is the first project to use Sony's new Wonderbook platform, and taps into the Harry Potter universe created by J.K. Rowling. In the game, players will learn how to cast a range of spells, including Incendio, Wingardium Leviosa, and Expelliarmus, using the PlayStation Move controller as a wand.

In addition to Book of Spells, Sony has a number of projects in the pipeline for Wonderbook. These include Diggs: Nightcrawler--a detective noir game from Oscar-winning studio Moonbot--as well as BBC's Walking with Dinosaurs, and a mystery project with Disney Interactive Studios.

The problem with this venture is that too many kids are going to be disenchanted with the product because the US version won't have any coupons for cadavers or any of the other macabre reagents, and as a consequence--WON'T BE ABLE TO CAST SPELLS! What a rip off! What a way to estrange your largest pool of fans! Rowling, YOU are the real witch!

I think I am reading the subtitle wrong, but is J.K. Rowling collaborating with SCEE London Studio on Wonderbook: Book of Spells? If she is, then she should of collaborate with The Workshop and SCE Santa Monica Studio on Sorcery, because it would probably not became a disappointment that it was if she help them on the development of it.

I don't get the big hate about it. Sure, it is not meant for mature players, but then again Sony has plenty mature games and exclusives. The idea is terrific and this is something I would have wanted in my childhood.

Why are they selling a vibrator with that game?

Interesting.... I'll give it that much till I see MORE games.  As for Move, AGAIN, I had big ideas for but to NO avail.  Where are the games.  Where are the arcade shooters that there are PLENTY of.  Where are the sword fighting games... Kingdom Hearts? BUSHIDO BLADE???  Samurai showdown, ?

I had SOO many games in mind when they announced move that I was excited, for almost no good reason as it has turned out in the beginning.  Now games have slowly come out.

Instead of tossing out a product and then seeing how it sales then slowly come out with games.  Wait or come out with more games first then sell the device!!!!

Will Dumboldork and He-Who-Must-Not-be...what the hell, Voldamort be in this game? Otherwise, I have this to say. "AVADA KADABRA" and the developers all die.

The technology and innovation is great. The only thing missing is...the game.

And they laughed at Kinect when gamers were flailing their arms at objects on the screen. lol!! Wasn't there a card game that did much the same thing using the Eye Toy? The only different is this is done in a bigger area. You really need a big screen HDTV for this to really come to life. If you have a 27in T.V. or smaller, the special effects won't be as interesting. Obviously this is am at kids. I think most adults would get bored with this after performing all the spells.

trying to look at this from a kids perspective...I can see this being very magical and cool..might do well considering the price

Funny enough that is actually a reasonable price, i am impressed with that.

But ironically that is all i am impressed with.

I respect Ms. Rowling for writing a enjoyable post-modern fantasy series and nothing else

I would have found this extraordinarily lame when I was the age of the kids in this video.

Lol chill guys. So what if this game is aimed more towards kids, big friggin deal. It just goes to show that Sony knows how to reach out to audiences of all ages. With that said, at least us grown ups have few titles to look forward to.. like God of War and The Last of Us just to name a few =)

good technology but the game look too "kids"..more intense game should be design to accommodate adult market.

@blackace that is exactly what this was design for was for kids and just think about the possibility it has for kids they can have fun learning  if you have a ps3 and kids like me it is worth to get I showed my kids the wonderbook part of E3 and gamescon and they were very exited about it

@jsmoke03 So you are saying the Wonderbook is going to be bad, before you ever get your hands on it? Or are you clairvoyant?

Landsharkk
Landsharkk

@23Jarek23 Yep, their whole console revolves around Kinect.  Allowing Xbox users to completely control their dashboard interface using their voice, including starting games (and playing some), navigating Netflix and other video apps, searching for games, music, and movies using the bing app, and more!

How terrible!

woodyfr
woodyfr

@John_Aguilera At least they didn't faked the videos and presentation like Microsoft did with Kinect. ;)

Flawless, you should watch the E3 video. You will probably come to the same conclusion that jsmoke03 and many others did.

shadowhunter0

@Landsharkk  @23Jarek23 but it doesn't work well everyone that I know that have tired to use all said they had to repeat the same words over and over before it would recognize same with movement and it is just easy to use the controller

SpiritWarStudio
SpiritWarStudio

@Landsharkk  @23Jarek23 I know, right? It completely takes that awful stress of holding a game controller away, because controllers are so freakin' heavy, aren't they?

FlawlessGoBot

@obsequies  @Landsharkk  @jsmoke03 I probably should have iterated my intentions better with my original post. What I mean to say is, it might be good, it might suck, but don't start saying one or the other until it comes out. Innocent until proven guilty, so to speak.

obsequies

@Landsharkk  @FlawlessGoBot  @jsmoke03 I watched it too..and the thing is success doesn't even have anything to do with a good product, it can but when you market products to kids half the time its just crap..I'm not saying that the E3 video even demonstrated that it was crap..it was a terrible demonstration of early content and it was kindof a joke..but I highly doubt that this will be a failure because any kids product that looks cool to a kid will sell something...will it be a good product?..hmm well I dunno, it might be ok? who knows

shadowhunter0
shadowhunter0

@Landsharkk  @WolfGrey  @SpiritWarStudio  @23Jarek23 are you a kid? my guess is no kids are what it was designed for

and M$ has been focusing on the kinect allot just look at the last couple of E3s half if not most of M$ press conference was about kinect M$ wants people to buy that overpriced camera

I think it's funny that anyone would think either of these things:

1) That the Xbox console revolves around the Kinect.

2) That people who use the Kinect only use it because they don't like controllers.

In reality, the Xbox console does everything it always could before (i.e. it hasn't affected any of the AAA or cross-console games), PLUS it has voice and body recognition options available.  The fact that the entire Xbox console can still be controlled with a controller completely destroys 23jarek23's original comment of how the Xbox revolves around the Kinect. Nothing is taken away, but yes stuff has been added.

The Playstation Move, is also an option for users of the PS3.  It hasn't taken away the PS3's ability to play any of the regular PS3 AAA and cross-console games.  Instead, it has only enhanced aspects of the console, giving owners of the console and PSMove more options.

However, when we are talking specifically about the WonderBook (which is the original topic of the article), yes the WonderBook is worth complaining about.  It fails to bring something useable to the PS3 (seriously, take a look at the E3 videos if anyone is in doubt).  It's a fail of a product.
