Id software today announced that its upcoming first-person shooter Return to Castle Wolfenstein will feature a multiplayer mode. According to the company, the game will include a complex team-based multiplayer system with a series of missions. Players will join in the multiplayer game as an Axis or an Allied soldier, and they will participate in a variety of realistic scenarios such as storming a beachhead, infiltrating a military installation, or defending a strategic position against an enemy attack. The game will feature a number of multiplayer maps, including an Axis airbase, a German village, and a secret Nazi laboratory.

The game will include four character classes: the soldier, the engineer, the medic, and the lieutenant. Each character class has a different set of skills, access to different types of ammunition and equipment, and a different style of combat.

"Set against the backdrop of the greatest conflict the world has ever known, Return to Castle Wolfenstein is poised to deliver a deep team-based multiplayer gaming experience, in addition to an amazing single-player campaign," said Larry Goldberg, executive vice president of Activision. "The varied countryside of World War II-era Germany lends itself to a wide array of game scenarios that will provide both machine-gun maniacs and silent assassins with virtually limitless replayability."

Return to Castle Wolfenstein is in joint development at Gray Matter, Nerve, and id Software, and it is scheduled for release this holiday season. For more information, take a look at our 913853in-depth previews of the game.
