Wolfenstein dev on hardest difficulty -- "You will cry blood"

Senior gameplay designer says I Am Death Incarnate difficulty option in upcoming Wolfenstein: The New Order will be no easy task.

The hardest difficulty mode in Wolfenstein: The New Order--called I Am Death Incarnate--will be a daunting task, senior gameplay designer at Machine Games Andreas Ojerfors has told GameSpot.

"You will cry blood," he said.

Wolfenstein: The New Order was designed with advanced difficulty in mind, Ojerfors explained, noting that the game will sport five difficulty levels, just like the original game.

"We want it to be a real, real challenge for people. This is not an easy game," Ojerfors said. "Of course we have the five difficulty levels of the original Wolfenstein 3D, like everything from Daddy Can I Play? to I Am Death Incarnate. So you can turn it down or turn it up if you want to. But like the default, normal setting of the game, it's going to be a challenging experience."

Ojerfors explained that though the game is aimed at challenging players, the experience was also designed to be fair.

"It's difficult, but it's always fair," Ojerfors said. "You're never really cheated. It's always your fault if you die."

Wolfenstein: The New Order launches for the Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC later this year.

Extreme difficulty mode? Bring it.

Anyone can make a game more difficult.  Just reduce the players damage and health and increase the enemies.  But nice try trying to distract gamers from the fact that you didn't have enough time to make a decent MP side of your game.  Hell, even Naughty Dog pulled it off with Last of Us and its a 3rd person survival horror.

There's a difference between a "hard" difficulty and one that is stupid impossible.

It's a fine line in FPS' especially.  I remember CoD Mod's veteran mode, it was essentially higher damage, a lot of taking cover, and everyone threw grenades at me every 2 seconds.

This wasn't hard, it was stressful.  The challenge was trying it 600 times until I got it right.

To me, a "hard" mode should be one that challenges, not punishes.  AI should behave in a more sinister manner, make better choices, force me to make bad ones.

Instead, modern gaming's "hard mode" is, "you do less damage and take more damage."

Well, as long as they're still offering an easier setting, I'm happy. Don't really care for dying over and over again in a story based game. That's what MP is for.

In this difficulty, if you die, well... you die. That's why you will cry blood

tired of games getting dumbed down for the masses

Who cares?  No multiplayer!

ET was awesome, but playing against computer controlled bots is boring.  I'd rather watch a movie.  A Wolfenstein film would be great.  Do that instead.

Many games' highest difficulty will make you cry blood. That's hardly something worth noting.

Thats what they said about Bioshock Infinites 1991 mode. Turned out it was easy :(

They should make something like Max Payne 3's New York Minute Hardcore!

A game has a perfect difficulty when you're on the verge of death even when you know exactly what to do. I know games where you can survive just by following some maneuver. That's too easy. Demon's Souls and Dark Souls are only hard at the beginning. After that you can decide for yourself how hard you want those games for yourself.

So what... still I would not even play the game.

Demo looks good. I'm excited about this one.. I also like to get the most out of my games. A harder difficulty is always good. Not to toot my own horn, but I like my games on the hardest difficulty or "Legendary" on my 1st walk through. I think that doing that makes you a threat on multiplayer.. Oh wait.. this game gets none! Unless we protest and we ask for it, just like we did with Microsoft over used games and having to be connected all the time. Thanks to social media that is... hehe

I bet a lot people didn't ask for this I bet ask for DOOM 4. This new game they doing know might fail. If they put  Zombies maybe will sell for the better.   Like everyone say Zombies Sales .

"It's difficult, but it's always fair,"

That sounds fair enough.

I personally think it would be a great "innovation" or something refreshing altogether if the developers revamp the difficulty styles like this:

Easy: Shorten levels / gameplay

Normal: Standard levels / gameplay

Hard: Additional levels / gameplay

Hardest: More additional levels / gameplay + secret guns + epilogue levels hinting a sequel

This way gamers would never know the full additional surprises until they play Hardest.

So hard mode will be hard. That's a first.

Hang on, there was a fifth difficulty for Wolfenstein 3D? I'm pretty sure there was only four...

Nonetheless, I'm happy that devs are actually making games a challenge rather than something that is evidently a massive cakewalk.

True but the real idea of difficulty is that it should force you to get creative about problem solving in some simple or complex way. its not about being oppressive with difficulty because they want you to play. Its about fear or at least players not feeling bored confident and unsatisfied about going up against foes. making the experience memorable. Even linear setpieces can be memorable if executed well. Look at DOOM. every time you get a new weapon. Its not always combat spoils in the midst of battle like Modern shooters. Instead its bait for a deadly trap or monster ambush

There is a difference. Hard mode for you, you die over and over. Hard mode for me, i get challenge and maybe die couple of times. So yes, there needs to be hard mode in games.

Multiplayer is not only for "if you want to die constanly" kinda stuff, it's something different if you don't want to play sp all the time. I hate pontless mp's like what that 09 Wolfenstein had but i don't hate mp overall. Forexample: i do play CS:GO so it really depends on the game the mp is in.

Im really glad they decided to not include mp in this game because most likely it would have been quite useless and it probably would have just taken important resources from the developement of this game's singleplayer.

Thank you!   This is why people really cry about games having MP in it.   Only Mr. Binary here is the only one honest enough to admit it.

@ChristysXmas

Sure but not many games in recent years have offered difficulty even on the most hardest difficulty.

@XUFF

Only thing is, Max Payne 3 was mostly crap due to super annoying every minute cutscenes (take away control from the player) and bad execution overall. MP3 had unrealistic amount of enemies in the levels and the fights also started from the most stupid reasons ever.

Max Payne's by Remedy Entertainment are totally different than Max Payne 3 by Rockstar Games. Original Max Payne are overall much better than MP3. Reasons stated above explain why i did not even bother finishing the game Rockstar made.

X-Robert

@XUFF Well it is 1999 mode, and I believe Machinegames since the game doesn't feature fully regenerating health and sheild. So Wolfenstein the New Order can be as hard as F.E.A.R and MP3.

@FKlepackiFTW Only hard at the beginning.. I am guessing you played with walkthroughs most of the time?

If completing the game without any guidance, then you're in for quite alot of deaths.

@eva02langley This is what I heard in my head when I read your comment.

"OOOH, FPS GAMES ARE ALL THE SAME.I'M SUCH A HIPSTER I THINK FINAL FANTASY IS THE TEH GREATEST GAME EVER BECAUSE IT NEEDS NO REFLEXES AND IS SMART."

Get your head out of your ass.Platformers and FPS games have always been the most skilled based and purest forms of games there are.

@solatron I don't think it's fair to lessen the value people get out of a game they purchase just because they're not hardcore gamers and can't play a game on the hardest difficulty settings.  I could understand maybe an additional bossfight, but telling them, "you can't play this extra hour of content because you're not good" would be just plain wrong.

XUFF
XUFF

@quakke @XUFF You are right, I was only referring to the difficulty. Nothing seems to be difficult enough these days.

FKlepackiFTW
FKlepackiFTW

Wow you're stupid. I guess you missed the whole point of my message. Games are truely difficult if they offer good challenge even if you know the game inside out. That is not the case with Dark Souls. If you want legitimate challenge you should go play Ninja Gaiden. You might as well be one of the reasons why games are on the easy side these days.

solatron
solatron

@devild0ogwhite @solatron Well if people would have that kind of perception, paying premium for additional content over free apps / MMO games would feel unjust too since its also like telling them "you can't have this extra content because you're not rich enough to purchase one".

I think its a matter of educate the consumers in this way that "if you crave some challenges, there are more surprises awaits you!" which this motivates the gamers to try harder difficulty settings. and they save a lot since the price is similar like any other games with "free additional contents"

quakke
quakke

@XUFF @quakke

Correct. Though Hard Reset and Serious Sam 3 actually offer that missing difficulty. Still at the last boss in Hard Reset since im playing it on Insane :D

Alan Wake by Remedy also offered difficulty. There are few that indeed offer difficulty but it's like you said that no difficulty these days and that unfortunately is how most games are. There are only few that offer that challenge and quality gameplay over watered down no sense casual gameplay.

solatron
solatron

@missliner Well, this analogy cannot be applied to extreme games like Dark Souls, this would only make these already frustrating games becomes more frustrating and not playable at all. As long as the difficulties are maintained realistically, this analogy can be applied.

missliner
missliner

@solatron - I think this is a false analogy, all games cost money and additional content is just a smaller version of a game.  I love video games, but no matter how much I play, I will never be able to beat games on the difficult level.  On the other hand I am a completionist, and the frustration of it literally being impossible for me to see the whole game would preclude me from ever buying it.  That's fine for some games that are geared towards hardcore gamers like Dark Souls, but if all games did that I (and others like me) would no longer be a gamer.  Why would companies that want to make money ever exclude whole groups of people?

llantaeusll
llantaeusll

@solatron @devild0ogwhite  Back in the days, games use to do something like that. Harder difficulties would add objectives and tougher enemies. In remember on Goldeneye use to do something like that.
