Witcher dev opening office in Krakow

CD Projekt Red's new office will open next month staffed by 20 people working on smaller games of about 20 hours in length.

The Witcher developer CD Projekt Red is expanding. The Polish studio confirmed with Eurogamer that it will open a new office in Krakow next month where it will work on a "smaller" game, estimated to be 20 hours in length.

This studio will be staffed by 20 people and aims to create one of two "premium quality" games that CD Projekt Red plans to release in the future. No further information about these games was divulged.

The company currently has one open position for its Krakow office.

Krakow and Warsaw are about 180 miles apart.

CD Projekt Red is currently working on next-generation games The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Cyberpunk 2077.

20 hours in gamelength is considered small by these devs. I actually lol'd at this, while some other game devs think even a 5hr campaign is too long. At least some devs get that not all of us are interested in multiplayer, or at-least not "only" multiplayer.

You know what I would love to see this developer try now that the witcher trilogy is finishing? some time in the future I would love to see them adapt the Monster blood tattoo trilogy by D m Cornish  into an rpg. I can say without a doubt, it is the most detailed, realistic, and interesting alternate world I've ever read about, aside from tolkiens.  And it is perfectly set up for making an rpg, since there are monster hunters in it. In fact, it would make a freaking amazing mmo, but I don't like mmos, so ill settle for an adventure rpg set in that world. Most detailed unique world I've ever read about.

That's nice. Just don't get too big. Everyone knows what happens when a dev in vg industry gets too big.

I love that their definition of smaller games is 20 hours.

Love how their "smaller" games are 20 hours long. A bit refreshing compared to so many AAA titles costing full price and being only 10-12 hours long

Its great to see a company that is consumer friendly and has the balls to release their big games drm free from day one being profitable and able to expand
I really hope more companies like cd projekt red are on the horizon as this is a company i actually want to support and buy games from instead of those companies that leave me with a bad taste in my mouth when i rarely buy a game from them

Awesome to see these Pollock s.o.b.'s doing well enough to expand their studio. Kept hearing about how good they were so I got Witcher 1 + 2 on Steam and can't wait to get back to them.

This is amazing. CD Projekt Red won't be able to play their own game on the Xbox One because they're stationed in Poland.

I'll support anything these guys do.  They are some of the few in the gaming industry that are actually 'deserving' of our $$$

Smaller games of 20 hours? Haha I finished Gears of War in about five or six, I think aiming for 20 is what ever one should be doing. And considering I spent 30+ hours on Witcher 1 and 2 each that is hardly a poky game.

Free games on GOG tomorrow . PC FTW .

CDPR :

"What's better than a sensational #noDRM game? A sensational #noDRM game you get for #FREE! Be sure to drop by GOG.com tomorrow and see what fantastic title we'll be giving away! There are many things far more exciting than #Facebookhashtags we have in store for you starting tomorrow, so don't miss out!"

20 hour game is considered small?! O.o then how do we call COD games? Circumcised microgame?

Go CDPR! I'm glad everything is working out for them.

Can't wait for a studio in Gdansk

I love how their idea of a smaller game is still around 20 hours of playtime. The bigger studios could learn something from that mindset.

So you don't need AAA cost to produce an AAA game, wow!!!

It may be a small thing but...

Kraków actually spelled with polish "ó"? On English-speaking site no less? What madness is this?

@UrbanTracker Yer, as someone who doesn't have a massive amount of time on my hands, I still prefer a longer game, because then I have something to look forward to when I get home, and something which makes says feel shorter!

SpazldNinjaDude

@heat_masheet They can get big, as long as they stay true. If they have lots of studios who are all managed properly, and they focus on creating a game each, then that's fine, it's when 3 or sometimes for studios make 1 game where the vision is lost for the game, look at AC the vision as shifted because too many different studios are working on it.

josh7845

@Dannystaples14 Not necessarily. Portal and Journey were short but sweet games. I also don't think I could handle Gears of War for 20 hours. That camera shaking when you sprint just gives me a migraine.

udubdawgz

@comb5 i couldn't look myself in the mirror if i was a person who's job was to make games and then proceed to pump one out thinking that 20 hours was a long one.

cod4:modern was the epitome of everything that's wrong.

these devs have a great mindset.

@penguino522 Witcher 3 is going to take hundreds of hours to get through which is what I like, a game with great game play, longevity and a brilliant story mode. That's what I call value for money, I cannot wait to buy this game. If expectations are met this will make Skyrim look like child's play. (I loved Skyrim).

@popegtr Bad news is that they are also adding kinect features in Witcher 3 for X1 . I hope that doesn't waste their time .

@Annonith "ó" speak as "u" Kraków = Crakuv. This is one of the most beatiful palces in Europe. And very chip.

Dannystaples14

@josh7845 Oh yeah Gears for 20 hours would make me want to cut myself but you do know a game is tops when it can keep you coming back for more and more even when you have passed the 20h mark. I mean I hit 20 hours yesterday on Mass Effect 2. I do kind of hope it ends soon though but it kept me interested this far. Just wish the story was more interesting.

penguino522
penguino522

I totally agree, I'm just saying calling 20 hours short is kind of crazy lol

Annonith

@NoYouRights @Annonith Yeah I'm from Poland I know these things, it's just this is the first time I've ever noticed somebody acknowledging polish characters on non-polish site. *sniff* I'm sorry something got in my eye.

josh7845
josh7845

@Dannystaples14 @josh7845 Ah I see what you mean now. It's not the length of the campaign of the game that matters, it's how much you want to keep coming back to it. I put so many hours into Mass Effect, and oh my god it's good. The character development is fucking superb. Bioware have some great writers for their games. The ME3 ending (so long as you have the extended cut downloaded) wasn't too offensive either.

josh7845
josh7845

@aajep @josh7845 @Dannystaples14 They are cheaper. Portal on consoles (in the Orange Box) can probably be picked up for less than ten dollars and for even less on Steam. Journey is around 15 dollars last time I checked. Big triple A games like COD or Battlefield cost around 60 dollars. So, they are considerably cheaper.

19James89
19James89

@Total_mischief @19James89 @penguino522 Given the rate I play games buddy, it will take twice as long as the developers predict. I will leave no inch of landmass unexplored, believe me when I say I'm a profoundly meticulous person, I mean meticulous lol.
