Witcher 3 devs hired by indie studio

CD Projekt Red lead gameplay designer and gameplay producer leave role-playing company for nearby 11 bit studios.

by

A pair of Witcher 3: Wild Hunt lead developers have made a major career change. CD Projekt Red lead gameplay designer Maciej Szczesnik and gameplay producer Marek Ziemak have joined independent development company 11 bit studios, it was announced today in a press release.

Szczesnik joins 11 bit studios, creator of the Anomaly franchise, as its new lead designer for an unannounced project. At the company, he'll be responsible for the "entire design" of a new game, and he said it's a "really exciting feeling" to build a new world from scratch.

11 bit studios isn't ready to announced what role Ziemak will play at the company, though he commented that he admires the indie scene's "creativity and freshness." Expect news about what 11 bit studios is working on sometime in March, he said.

Szczesnik and Ziemak didn't have to go far at all to join 11 bit studios after leaving CD Projekt Red, as both companies are based in Warsaw, Poland.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt launches for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC this year. The game is not coming to Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 because releasing a fully featured version of the game on those consoles would be impossible, CD Projekt Red said previously.

I think that at the moment it does not matter, it will not affect the game.

Its like seeing your two favourite players from a football leave and go to another club. You know your team will still do well, but you *really* liked what those guys did while they were there :)

Good luck to them in their new ventures. :)  I'm really looking forward to Witcher 3, though.

If they left then the game must be nearly done. Otherwise we're screwed.

Ok. I'm ready for the Witcher 3 release date announcement now. This is my MOST anticipated game of this year. It's supposed to be quarter 2 of 2014. This and Dark Souls 2, that is. Spring 2014 might be one of the greatest quarters in gaming history.

The game is almost done, so I am not too concerned about it.

It's a little sad to see anyone leave CDPR, but having another developer out there with a hint of CDPR within it can only be a great thing!

11 Bit Studios must be psyched to have recruited them. Good on all of them. I'm still super hyped for Witcher 3.

No big loss, by this point the gameplay design is probably done and are just polishing it.

Anomaly: Warzone Earth was a great and innovative game, Anomaly 2 less so but still good. 11 bit Studios was already a talented developer and with these guys they'll only get better. I'm really interested to see their next project.

unprofessional, unless all their work for the game was done which i doubt, they should remain in the company till the game is finished

CDPR is going the way of Valve, sitting on their asses and letting their digital distribution platforms make the money. So yeah, guys probably figured it's better they left for a company that makes games.

Must be a big amount of increase in his salary at 11 bit to make him leave CDprojektRED. That plus the fact that he will be able to design a whole new IP. But still gotta be a massive increase.

What a pair of Grade A dumbasses. Why would someone give up their jobs at a successfully growing company like CD Projekt Red to work at a small and fairly ordinary indie studio who hasn't made anything good? That's like working hard to be CEO of a multi-billion dollar company but giving it up to be CEO of another company worth only a few million or like being given a Ferrari and trading it in for a Camery.

@Gallowhand KATE!  Great guns, woman, get back under cover!  You saw what they did to Lara?  Dressed in a tank top and hung by her arms... twice?  Dropped on a spike?  Stuck in a story with cliché characters?  Do you have any idea what they'll do to you if they catch you!?  That 'Gallowhand' handle isn't going to fool them for long! ;)

@mattress805  They sound like pretty important decisions, especially "lead gameplay designer".  Makes me think that The Witcher 3 has to be pretty much done, hopefully :), so maybe the release date is coming very soon.

@khuzko The setting of the games is what I find most impressive; it portrays the filth of the human condition in a medieval Europe-type world  like no game I've seen, but the game is not filthy like, say, Postal. The story is as enjoyable as its dark mood permits and intricate, though occasionally bordering on confusing. The combat is at the minimum unintrusive, so if you find its mechanic unimpressive you don't have to dwell on it.

Oh, and The Witcher 1 and 2 are both shining examples of balancing an unpleasant  war with steel and fire and treachery with sex. I wouldn't be able to stand a game of this length looking only at so much ugliness, regardless of how well it's made.

Best graphics on the 360 easily. Complex plot and characters. One of the greatest protagonists in gaming history. Geralt of Rivia is a bad ass.

@khuzko Witcher 2 is easily the best RPG of the last 10 years, hand down. I am barely able to finish games anymore and I went through this one 6 times... I didn't do that since Chrono Trigger...

I would highly recommend them. You can get them for a good price on steam or GOG.

The game is done.

There was an article about it a few days ago with the interview, I was trying to find the link. I am on the Witcher forums everyday.

@Bellum_Sacrum  Maybe that would be true, if GOG would be 'normal' online store. But it isn't. GOG is not able to cover more than 20% of expenses in CD Projekt Group.

BTW - Valve still makes games. They're just not Half-Life episodes.

@Butt_Chunx  Dont be so hasty to judge. Different people value different things. Maybe he was unhappy because he had little creative liberty while working for CDPR.

@PeterDuck @MateykoSlam  Are you still looking for that article? In case you find it be sure to post it! I've been following this game ever since I was disappointed by GTA V. but I had no idea they were that close to going gold.

@PeterDuck @MateykoSlam  Most of the game is done. There's still design choices to be made though. Sometimes you just can't bug fix everything and you have to cut things to make it all work. Though the heavy lifting of his job is in the first 80% of development.

@nl_skipper @khuzko

On top of playing the games, which I adored for its adult themes and dialogues, I read the books. I quit halfway through the last one. Strangely enough none of the novels are as good as the games and all of them are much more lightly toned. One of life's little mystery.

Wish Games of Thrones had good games, because Martin's novels are of the highest order.

nl_skipper
nl_skipper

@khuzko  You probably don't NEED to play them, but if you're looking for another game to play you really should, and it will only make the 3rd game that much more enjoyable because you'll be introduced to the world, and the main character, and some of the game mechanics.  The games have a good journal that fills in information though, so you'll catch onto things even if you skip the first (or the first two) games.

Both TW1 and TW2 play fairly differently though thanks to a change in graphics engine and a total overhaul of the combat.  Both of them are full RPG's with great stories though, and I can't really pick a favourite of the two, they're both amazing in their own way.

Vojtass

@KaptajnKnapThey are not close to going gold. They just finished most of designining process. There's also programming, optimizing, beta testing, debugging etc etc. Game will be released on Septemper at best. I think it will be October or November.

3_"smaller project" for which they created their second studio in Krakow...

Three games and they are a very small studio (compared to other company that makes games of the same size).
Furthermore The Witcher 3 is being developed for 3 platform, normally that shouldn't add too much time (you know when you get crappy ports...) but with the amount of care they are known for in order to get the perfect port, it is obvious that it will take them a bit more time to finish it, To me they sound like they have their hands quite full, not that they are sitting o their asses...
