Witcher 2 modkit accidentally released

CD Projekt Red confirms Redkit was available for a "brief moment," but access has since been blocked.

The mod toolkit for The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings was briefly available recently due to a mistake on the part of developer CD Projekt Red. Access to the tools has since been blocked.

"Just a word of clarification. We were running some tests on the website and it went public for a brief moment," CD Projekt Red community manager Marcin Momot wrote in the game's forums (via Edge).

Momot told gamers who were able to grab the Redkit to "have fun," noting that the files are official. The modkit will be released officially in full soon, he promised, though an official release date was not provided.

"Please give us just a little bit more time (it's almost here!)," Momot said. "We apologize for the confusion."

CD Projekt Red aims to simplify the modding process with the Redkit. The goal is to give users the tools to establish their own worlds, quests, and branching storylines. The Redkit is a spiritual successor to the Djinni toolkit for the original Witcher, though the interface and workflow have been refined in the update.

The Redkit includes access to all assets from The Witcher 2, including character models, textures, shaders, animations, and sound effects. For more, check out GameSpot's impressions of the technology.

CD Projekt Red is probably the best game developer in this gen. Will buy their next games.

Amazing. This allows to become a developer and get a feel how games are created.

I love CD Projekt Red, there really is a low amount of remaining developers that actually care about their customer base. I feel people and companies like this are the ones that help gaming hold on to it's thread, while others like Activision and EA are the ones cutting their own threads for money. It's a simple business plan, you treat your customers right and they will continue to return which will continue to get you money.

I can't say I'm the biggest fan of the Witcher series but I have tons of respect for CD Projekt Red. They actually don't treat the PC crowd like a bunch of morons like so many companies do. Want ''feature x''? -Sorry, if it isn't in the console version then the PC market doesn't need it!

Alright! It's time to reinstall the game and go to The Witcher Nexus!

I love thier response to the gamers who got the Redkit: have fun!  Wish there were more companies like ProjektRed.

Quite simply put; a great company = great game(s).

Let's hope they stay this way for as long as possible!

They are such an awesome company. Recently another company *cough*Blizzard*cough* accidently gave out free gold from its auction house. Instead of saying have fun, they are persuing the "exploiters" of their mistake.

CD ProjecktRed is hopefully the future of gaming.

They give us DRM-free games, modkits, and continuous patches.  This is how a gaming company should be.

That'd be cool if Cyberpunk 2077 had Redkit compatability at launch.

I was hoping some user-created mods would hit GOG's forums.

My computer is at its current usable limit with this game and that is with some of the settings turned off. V-sync, Uber, and a couple of others + only 720 res. Mods aren't going to help.

awkward when their players create the next Witcher game before they do!

CD Project once more proves they are one of the few that understand what modern gamers want. One of the few im happy to buy every title they produce, without thinking the cost. Kudos once more from a devoted fan

Rockstar could really take some points from  these guys as i became totally frustrated trying to mod GTA without proper tools.

That environment would be limitless as i had cyberpunk in mind.

We will wait, CDProjekt. You have no need to apologize for anything. You guys are the saints of game developers and we will always respect and support you.

hmmm... so it leaked briefly? Must check the Witcher Nexus if anyone there snatched it! I've been waiting for this modkit since witcher 2 came out!!!! it's a shame they didn't do it sooner, like skyrim got it's modkit 2-3 months after the release

A modkit?! I hadn't dare imagine! It's like Dragon Age: Origins all over again! Oh happy day! The bards will sing songs of this for years to come.

Their own worlds, I wonder if that means you can create entirely new maps/locations.  If you can change all that other stuff and new maps, that would be like a totally new game using TW2's engine.

Oh well, just CDProjekt Red doing good by the people. Never change please.

great move.. look for example at Skyrim.. its modders made the game more excited.. can't wait to see what brilliant modders will do with Geralt of Rivia

pal_080

Ohhh,  I hope there are some talented modders out there chomping at the bit to get their hands on this!  Imagining user generated content in TW2 has me terribly excited.  I might actually try and work with these tools myself when their available in full, though I've no experience with such things on the PC.

Cloud_imperium

So much noble people . CDPR is great . BTW their recent comments clearly shows that the kit will be officially available within week . I saw screenshots of user generated content on their forums and it looks phenomenal . Red Engine is hands down best looking engine of this generation , on PC it is next gen today .

@granola_goodnes Yeah, that's a really classy reaction for them to have. Most gaming companies would threaten anyone who downloaded it.

ooqqoo

@Virkhus They're completely different situations. One is an accidental early release of a modkit.  They other is a cheat/exploit that would've ruined the entire economy for every player in the game.  I know it's 'in' to hate on Blizzard nowadays but at least try to be somewhat reasonable in the criticism.  They didn't accidently give free gold, people cheated.

Renoo27

@Virkhus The more succesful and corporate you become, the less human you become. Hopefully it's a long time before CD Projekt Red fall down that route.

@highlanderjimd   haha sadly enough that's probably accurate.  I can't even understand how there are so many female nude/body enhancement mods for Bethesdas games!

@Dannystaples14

They could.  There are tons of games with performance improvement mods.  Popular games, such as Fallout, Elder Scrolls, GTA, and Total War have had dozens.

@Cloud_imperium I wouldnt say its the best looking engine of current gen, Witcher 2 looks amazing just because CDPRED actually care about detail and put effort.

Give CDPRED the engine of Hitman Absolution or Frostbite 3 and you'll see what i mean.

Also if you want more hype for graphics, i hope you read a recent interview in wich one dev said TW3 is going to look so good you wont believe your eyes.

nasser_m200
nasser_m200

@Renoo27 @Virkhus hope never they do, and from the games they making I can tell u it's 4 hardcore gamers and mature peeps so it won't be as succesful as others :P

Cloud_imperium
Cloud_imperium

@yeah_28 @Cloud_imperium Devs add detail because engine allows them to do so . We all know how much difference is there between the visuals of Witcher 1 running on Bioware's aurora engine and Witcher 2's Red Engine . Witcher 1 was also created by CDPR then why the hell it doesn't look like Witcher 2 .? Your comment is invalid .

ShimmeringSword
ShimmeringSword

@Cloud_imperium No, the engine allows them to use it's supported features, such as certain lighting technologies or different mapping types. Things like visual style and level of detail are only limited by the effort put in by the development team and by what modern hardware is capable of outputting. Crysis 1 released and looked great, it was visually unbeaten for years, but when it released virtually no computer at the time could handle it's max settings. This is an example of a studio going above on beyond the standard, ignoring perceived limitations and expectations. All the cryengine gave them was dynamic lighting and some physics, which to this day very few games actually use even though the engines are capable.

yeah_28
yeah_28

@Cloud_imperium @yeah_28 the amount of light reflecting surfaces, resolution of shadows, reflections, textures, amount of dynamic light sources, amount polygons, etc.

All of this can be done like crap or super good looking in any engine, within limitatins of course, like the comparsion you make between W1 and W2.

I was trying to say that besides the fact that REDengine2 is great, its also how they make the game in the engine.

Most other AAA games also have great looking engines, better or worse than REDE2, but the graphics are so rushed and consolized that often they look worse than the witcher 2, when they could actually look just like it, or maybe better.

If a game like, Resident Evil 6 for example, wich looks kind of bad, was made in REDE2 but also by the capcom team, it would look the same, if not worse because of the lack of DX11 support for example.

The engine dictates the rules and playground, true, but within that, its just a tool or canvas that artists have to transform into the best looking RPG ever created so far, and thats CDPRED's merit in my opinion.
