Witcher 2 mod tools debuting at Gamescom

CD Projekt Red planning to present REDkit at industry event in Germany next week to media; no information about public release.

Gamers eager to design and play their own adventures for Geralt the Witcher will soon be in luck. The developer announced today that it will present its Witcher 2 modding tools--called the REDkit--at Gamescom next week in Cologne, Germany.

What kinds of worlds will gamers create with the REDkit?

Gamescom is open to the public, but CD Projekt Red's REDkit presentation will only be open to members of the press. No mention was made concerning when the REDkit will be made available to the public, but CD Projekt Red said it will share more information next week.

The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings is CD Projekt Red's latest body of work. It released in May 2011 for the PC to a warm critical reception, before later arriving on the Xbox 360. The Polish studio is currently at work on a Cyberpunk role-playing game, as well as a potentially related "mature dark fantasy" game.

This release of the modding tools and the removal of their DRM is why they got my (and my friends') money - First right after the removal of DRM and we think we'll buy it again, just to show our support for them releasing the mod tools.

We didn't buy any EA, UbiSoft or Activision games for ages now, so there's enough "buffer" to support indies and other good companies.

Perhaps the other companies will learn from this good example too.

Don't make your customers suffer from you trying to protect your product (DRM and annoying copy protecion) and you'll have satisfied customers.

Well done, CD Project Red - Stick with it for your next titles please and our money is yours.

Great game, brilliant handling of extra content & now this...If they keep this magnificent work then up then I'm worried that EA will surely want to buy them out & ruin all of that good will.

if these guys keep throwing awesome stuff like that at us, they have the best path to the top.

This dev is by far the best out there in terms of providing quality.  The game was good and it came with so much stuff (like a collectors edition would) all for the same price.  Then the enhanced version for free.  Sadly there are very few devs out there like these guys anymore.

CDprojekt should use the user comments to market their game. They deserve every good word being said about them. It's about their games and the respect they have for their audience...that's the real selling point. Did I mention the brilliantly addictive game play?

One of the best if not the best RPG companies out there. And I love the stance they take on DLC. Always release solid games that are a blast to play. Just wish they would get the witcher series out on ps3 cause no one should miss those games.

Haha... knew a company with as many great philosophies as CDP wasn't going to just ignore the modding scene.

Very interesting, but I doubt it's gonna be easy to use for most people.

Phew! I guess they're thinking that it needs help to be considered as good as NWN which was deemed worthy of modding tools right out of box.

CD Projekt RED will have two booths on Gamescom. You can feel invited to Cologne, where the biggest video games show takes place.

Seriously.....CD Projekt is probably one of the best Dev out there. They treat their fans really good (Free DLC, free DRM game, modding tools ect). I really hope that their fans will treat them good too by buying their games and not download it illegal.

So could the Witcher 3 be built with modding in mind from the outset? Or maybe Cyberpunk? That would give those games way more longevity and we'd have another Skyrim on our hands. I haven't been able to justify unistalling TW2 or Skyrim since I installed them last year.

honestly, I hope CDProjekt is as big as Valve,

and GOG is bigger than Steam

that would be awesome.

Their position is great and all and I love their games but the position of one developer isn't going to even dent what has become an industry-wide epidemic. There is absolutely no way, short of a full boycott but that (realistically) won't ever happen, that developers who have discovered that they can make money through post-release content would ever go back to releasing free updates...

you guys should replace "warm critical reception" with "rave critical reception"

@Sanguis_Malus I hope that won't happen. CD Projekt is the biggest and most internationally successful game company we have in Poland. I can see how they'd want to remain as an independent studio and they don't really need an owner, since they're a pretty big company in Poland.

@xsonicchaos yes yes! more awesome games, awesome dark storytelling and much much more casual sex!

@ZippyDSMLee Yup, it's modified Aurora engine editor called D'jinni. There are plenty of adventures created by TW community. :)

@KSSuperhero I have The Witcher 2 on PC, but I would gladly get a PS3 version if it ever came out - not only to support CD Projekt, but also because it's an excuse to complete this brilliant game for the fourth time. xD

@mwmars It's always good to have more than one gaming machine. You can still use gamepad in TW2, so feel like at home. ;)

@Dante200X Don't you worry. If the Nexus sites are any indication, there will be thousand of modders ready to make everything from swords that says Linkara quotes to every flavour of naked women you can think of.

Bamul

@Ladiesman17 Well, Valve has a small number of employees for such a successful company (293 people). But CD Projekt has even less - only 112! It just goes to show how amazing these people are. The best game developer out there, if you ask me.

pal_080
pal_080

@Mariner32 Well hey, we each can only do our part.  My role is to not buy anymore un-finished bug ridden Bethesda games at launch,  Not to buy ANY UbiSoft titles until they get rid of U-Play, and not to buy any EA products if they continue to enforce the use of Origin.  I'll miss out of some good games,  but there ARE good developers still out there that don't harass their customers, and it's my duty to only support them!  Gamers got to be strong, or we will continue down this DLC, half finished game road.

 @Vojtass

what's gamepad?  ha.. I don't know anything about PCgaming... like a controller?

syafiqjabar
syafiqjabar

@pal_080 If you refuse to play unfinished and buggy games, you probably wouldn't have bought the first Witcher either. It was mad buggy when first released but got patched extensively later as well as getting new features and adventures added. The second game was better but still had performance issues, until it received major patching later. Speaking of Bethesda, Skyrim also received both extensive patching and new features added for free after release. They are also supportive of their mod community.

Vojtass
Vojtass

@mwmars Gamepad, joypad, control pad, controller = the same thing. Anyway you can use every controller in TW2. I prefer mouse and keyboard, but this is just me.

Bamul

@syafiqjabar  @pal_080 Bethesda is a much, much, much bigger company than CD Projekt RED, with a lot more money and from a country with a better economical situation, yet they still provide so much less support for any of their games. It doesn't even compare to CD Projekt, really. Bethesda is one of the better companies out of the big ones, but CD Projekt is the best of them all.
