Wipeout studio resurrected?

Studio Liverpool posts updates to social channels saying "We Are Alive" with accompanying image bearing Wipeout resemblance.

Sony confirmed last month that after nearly 30 years of operation, Wipeout series creator Studio Liverpool would shut its doors. Now, it appears the studio has new life. The company updated its Facebook and Twitter pages today with a message of "We Are Alive" and an image that resembles the studio's Wipeout series.

Is this a first look at the next Wipeout?

The image (at right) shows two vehicles speeding away from a fiery explosion. No further information is available, and as of press time, Sony had not responded to GameSpot's request for comment.

At the time of Sony Liverpool's closure, the studio was rumored to be working on a Wipeout title and a Splinter Cell-style action game for the PlayStation 4. Sony has kept quiet concerning its official next-generation plans, but analysts believe new consoles from Microsoft and Sony will release in late 2013.

Sony Liverpool was established in 1984 as Psygnosis, before being picked up by Sony in 1993 and rebranded. The firm developed launch titles for every PlayStation format ever released. Most recently, Sony Liverpool developed the warmly received PlayStation Vita game Wipeout 2048.

if this is still real then they should bring out that update for wipeout 2048 with bug fixes, the AR reward system and new look for some different things

Well I hope in fact that they did get closed down. And I hope this is real and Sony will release a statement saying the studio is open again. Everyone needs a little fire under their ass to turn out some quality product. Not saying that their products have been anything less than quality, just that they will work harder, faster, stronger, better ...

That's still kinda lame to me though, that studio has been at Sony's side with like, every console launch. That's like the equivalent of divorcing your wife after she gave you all those years of her life and did all that stuff for you.

here is the update from yesterday, hours after the photo was posted.

Good afternoon Pilots

As you may be aware; Studio Liverpool shut its doors on the 22nd of August 2012.

It was a very sad day- the end of an era and will never be forgotten. While we wait for news on the future of WipEout, Online play will continue to be supported and there will be plenty of WipEout community events, giveaways and goodies to look forward to!

WipEout’s passion will live on - Together we are stronger and together we will keep WipEout alive.

WE ♥ WO!

Maybe they reformed into a smaller group and will be making a Wipeout style game on all platforms? Or maybe Sony got some their employees back and are gonna bring the studio back from the dead.

I'll save the champagne for when we get official confirmation from Sony. While this seems like a fair assumption, it is still an assumption.

That Splinter Cell-style action game is "Syphon Filter". You can take that to the bank and cash it.

Hopefully Liverpool studio is indeed alive and hard at work on a Wipeout launch title for Playstation 4. Maybe just moved to a better studio in Liverpool. Quietly creating that "Splinter cell ish" new IP for Sony's PS4 in 2014? They are Sony's best studio so they shouldn't be closed down.

maybe they just folded the team to another studio

Oh man, Wipeout. Now that's a blast from the past. That's one of the games I had when I was like 3-4. I still have half of the box and the manual lol. Found it about a month ago. Weird.

Probably keeping them alive until the game is done, then they'll get the chop

Messages have been on official sites, so it's definitely Sony related if they're back before any of you go crazy with dumb ideas.

I'm guessing Sony were taken by surprise by the strong reaction to Studio Liverpool's closure and are now going to restructure to see if they can build some goodwill hype.

Here's hoping if they do, the blowhards decrying Sony for closing them down will remember to BUY SL's next game.

Money where your mouth is, bandwagon jumpers.

So THAT'S what happened to Psygnosis! Those guys were all over my Amiga collection when I was a kid; them and The Bitmap Brothers. *sniff* I miss my Amiga. May it rest in peace.

Interesting prospect. Perhaps a top secret PS4 project underway, and this was the best way to keep it under wraps in an age where the internet news tells us almost everything early...

or this is just a fanpic made to rile us up, lol.

They could develop Heavenly Sword 2. If I'm not mistaken there were rumours about SL developing HS2 a couple of years ago...

@jsmoke03 Yeah, that's very possible. But it would still be good to know that those talented people were back in work, making games.

@ryan82994 What? Wipeout had a new game released a few months ago. You make it sound like it's been forever. LOL

@kavadias1981 That actually sound plausible. Hey if Nintendo wants to save game companies I'm glad.

@kavadias1981 Don't even say that! I'm still recovering from the shock (and horror) of the Bayonetta 2 announcement. :(

@kavadias1981 Psygnosis and The Bitmap Brothers - two absolute stonewall guarantees of gaming quality in the late '80s/early 90s...

@kavadias1981 Definitely if not the best, then one of the best, Psygnosis is guilty for some of the most beautiful moments in my life. Benefactor, Lemmings, Shadow of the Beast, Hired Guns, Leander, Walker, Wipeout.. and more than 150 games more... No words can explain how precious they are for gaming world. PSYGNOSIS FOREVER!

@SolidTy If there was some top secret BS, what would be the point of "closing the studio" , attracting more attention?

RhythmAndBlues

@lanmanna Well, the only game in the Wipeout series by the name of 'Wipeout' came out in 1995. Which, I believe, is the one he was talking about...

 @ryan82994

You rather let money-hungry scum like Sony or Microsoft keep their hands on Bayonetta? They'll probably end up charging you to view her body parts, $10.00 each, when she uses her Umbra Weave attacks.

kavadias1981
kavadias1981

@RhythmAndBlues The way things things are going with Sony, they certainly don't appear interested in making money.

RhythmAndBlues
RhythmAndBlues

@shadowhunter0   Sorry to ask, but could you please clarify what you mean by that? You're surely not suggesting that, of the two, only Microsoft is interested in making money...?

Fans of Sony had better hope that that's not true. Otherwise Sony will die more quickly than even the most severe Nintendo-critics are suggesting will happen to them - because (news flash...) every console manufacturer is in the business to make money.

bubba_1988
bubba_1988

@RhythmAndBlues  @ryan82994 Lol if Nintendo bought Liverpool, the next Wipeout game would feature curved ship designs and the weapons would be shells and mushrooms. A theme song for now reason would be heard playing when a shield is activated.

RhythmAndBlues
RhythmAndBlues

@ryan82994 I would fuckin' **love it** if Nintendo's put them back on-line. It'd be such a ballsy move...
