Wiis board cruise ships

Norwegian Cruise Line adding Nintendo's new console to its list of seaborne activities; Wii Sports, WarioWare, more played on gigantic screens.

Cruise lines are adding family-friendly entertainment and all the comforts of home onboard their massive ships in an effort to draw customers. For fans of the Wii in particular, the boats of Norwegian Cruise Line just got a bit more friendly and comfortable.

Big ships, big screens.

The company has added the Wii to several of its cruise ships, and plans to have the system onboard its entire fleet within the next month. The Wiis will be housed in the "atrium and other public rooms" of each ship and connected to giant monitors for all patrons to see.

The games currently slated to be available on the cruises are Wii Sports, Wii Play, WarioWare: Smooth Moves, and Excite Truck.

Millions of people around the world continue to discover the fun of playing Wii with their friends and families," said Nintendo of America senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications George Harrison. "Norwegian Cruise Line is a great partner, as they offer us direct access to nontraditional gamers."

Wow it looks great on a huge screen like that! Well Nintendo you've done it again.

Nintendo continues to think outside the box and make moves. I wouldn't mind playing a few rounds on a humongous screen like that. I wonder if they need a special sensor bar to handle a screen that size...

"Who would pay money just to go on ships and play 4 games on the Wii. But it's a good idea for people who are really going to travel." Dumbest. Comment. Ever. Apparently you would. Who would drive AAALLL the way to the game store just to play the demos they have set up??? No one! But since you're ALREADY THERE (same as on a cuise ship, maybe???) what's the harm in playing??? NO ONE is going to get on that boat JUST for the Wii...

Nintendo would be smart to make them available to purchase on the cruise ship. Buy one as you're getting off and going home. Of course, there would actually have to be some available for that to happen.

Cruse de la Wii~ Sorry, couldn't resist. XD

Lol, Kravyn81. This is awesome: it's a testament to how magnetic the appeal of the Wii really is. Nintendo's fanbase will expand indefinitely when the addictive and attractive power of the Wii partners with cruise lines.

Hahaha what's funny for me is 1. I'm going on a Norwegian cruise in two months, 2. ExciteTruck is on my list of games to rent eventually. Going to be pretty amusing if I play it on a boat instead of renting it.

I'm quite happy about this announcement... but I got happier when a Nintendo rep brought the wii to break room and I got to beat a lot of people in bowling... :D

Now we know why there aren't any available to buy! The cruise line bought them all! Damn Norwegians! :P

Now all the Wii needs is a shuffle board game maybe in Wii Sports 2 ;-)

The Wii offers the most fun games of all three consoles and is a kind of modern entertainment - so, there really is a point for cruise ships to have Wiis onboard. I couldn't imagine playing a shooter or beat'em up on a relaxing, quiet cruise... (Wii Sports can also save them quite some equipment, e.g. tennis rackets, a bowling course etc. ^.^ )

This is a great way to entertain the whole family on board a cruise ship. It makes more sense to have this than silly shooting arcade machines and the like.

sure its vaca and u probs don't just do it for video games. but still, its an added enjoyment. you won't be able to just stare out to sea all day. well, maybe u could but the wii will tempt u.

The cruise ship is ordering them straight from the Nintendo warehouse themselves just as if a retail store would. People go on vacation to get away from the norm i.e. everday life and the old style of playing games...xbox and ps. Wii is competely different and it viewed as those expensive interactive games such as lazer scopes and virtual reality games. Games that can only be found in big amusment parks.

hopefully this is expanded to more ships

lol if you're ashamed of playing the Wii then why are you playing it? my friend once asked if I felt like an idiot swinging around a controller, I simply replied no, because if I did I wouldn't have played games in the first place, to look like an idiot playing a game. any way you put it playing the Wii doesn't make you look stupid, but only makes the one who thinks you look stupid, judgmental. this looks like the start of something good. and, my Norwegian Cruise looked nowhere near as nice as that...

Since Norway is a PAL country I guess the resolution will be slightly higher than 480. Nice move from Nintendo anyway. I wonder where the Wii will turn up next?

actually, the cruise line is probably buying the Wiis directly from Nintendo.

Just more proof of how great the Wii is. This console truly appeals to the mases. Great work Nintendo! Oh, and whats up with all the "480p" comments. Do you really think people who are on cruise ships playing the Wii care about high end video game consoles... in a word, no.

japanesegoth
japanesegoth

"Hahaha. 480p on huge screens? It's going to look God-awful!" obviously not if you looked at the screenshot. i love it when people talk like they think they know everything. whatever... "And just one hilarious thought, weren't there shortages of the wii?" ya know. somehow i think a big cruise ship company would be able to afford a few of them.

lithus

Kinda defeats the purpose of going on a "vacation" cruise.

ChitoKiryoku

That's awesome. Well, for nintendo I mean. I don't really see the cruises gaining much from this. And just one hilarious thought, weren't there shortages of the wii?

-Ronin-_basic

Not a bad idea, actually. It's not like this is expensive advertising, and it can only do good for them in getting the word out to non-gamers. Who knows? If they convince more folks to get one this way, it'll have paid off.

waleywu_basic

Here's the question. do you really want to blow up a 480P onto a giant screen?? and yeah, people would looove to make an ass of themsevles in front of hundreds of strangers.
