Wii U GamePad 'distracting' for fighting games, says Tekken boss

Katsuhiro Harada says looking back and forth between screens in Tekken Tag Tournament 2 on Wii U is bothersome; GamePad instead to be used for "shortcuts."

The Wii U's tablet-like GamePad controller--in conjunction with a television set--is not a good fit for fighting games, Tekken series producer Katsuhiro Harada told Eurogamer in an interview published today. Harada explained that when Tekken Tag Tournament 2 launches for the Wii U, the GamePad will likely be used for features not related to quickly glancing between two screens.

Glancing between two screens in a fighting game is "distracting," says Harada.

"Looking at the small screen and the big screen at the same time is pretty distracting for a fighting game," Harada said. "So we're thinking of making [the GamePad] useful as a way of having shortcuts. Or, by making progressing through the game more convenient. Or by playing alone on the GamePad screen."

Tekken Tag Tournament 2 hit Japanese arcades last September and welcomed an update in February, which added new modes, such as one-versus-two matches and pair-play mode. It is due out for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on September 11. For more on the fighting game, check out GameSpot's latest preview.

Shortcuts? If SF4 is on Wii U Guile will be top tier 100%

While were on the topic of shortcuts, let's take it to the next level, combo Macros and turbo buttons.

Another Miss leading article by a biased Gamespot Hack wannabe journalist.

Every week its a Hate fest on a Console that hasnt even  been released.

I could write for Gamespot.  Gush on Halo and any FPS, Hate on Wii U and then Publish an article every week by some Corporate Shill that Digital games are the Best thing for the industry.

I think its time for Full Disclosure from Gamespot

AKA, much like the Wii, the Wii U's gimiick may not work well with all genres. Anyone that had DS knows this. That's okay though, I wasn't buying fighting games on Wii U anyways (I am going where the fighting community and my fighting sticks are at).

My Wii U will be for high quality exclusives like Mario and Zelda...much like my Wii, Gamecube, and N64 were for.

The title of this article is very misleading as the GamePad seems distracting only if not used correctly. Like Harada said, I imagine to be troublesome looking back and forth between two screens in fighting games. At the same time, he acknowledges how the controller might be convenient for shortcuts and whatnot. Then, there's the new classic controller if you're not into the GamePad.

Wii U Pro controller would probably be a gamer's best bet for this kind of game. The Wii U GamePad in conjunction with your TV screen makes it like a giant DS.

Could have health bar, timers, and camera options on the screen.Alternative tag mode where the second player is fighting simultaneously in the foreground or background (and does a dynamic leap when tagged).

Or simply have the characters move list on the screen which is the easy way out of commiting to the hardware (cross platform).

 i would like the old games with multiple fighting planes to come back (and have a team mode so it's 2 vs 2 or 3 vs 3 all at once) i could see a Marvel VS capcom game try something like this or SNK to try king of fighters/Samurai showdown with something similiar.Linking moves with your team mates between screens (and online) would be crazy fun.

Also i look at the Wii U gamepad and i cannot help but think VIEWTIFUL JOE 3 (automatic Zoom all the time with the viewtiful touch from the DS game).

No they're not, they already displayed several ways it can be utilized, Ubisoft and Rocksteady also showed other ways. It's not always about looking at both screens at the same time, in fact, it's hardly about that.

 @finaleve Many Tekken players, even some of the best, use a standard Playstation controller. Because of how the mechanics work in Tekken, there is not a huge margin of disadvantage by not using a stick.

In fact, serious players big money for good condition original Playstation gray controllers without the analog sticks. It is lighter and much easier to carry around than the later iterations that have analog sticks which are useless for Tekken and add extra bulk and weight.

Yes because you own one apparently and have played every single type of game there is to play on it. Let's see, already developers that make RTS games are VERY interested in the features of the controller, which Pikmin 3 will prove is perfect for RTS games. Western RPGs could benefit heavily due to the massive amount of commands WRPGs tend to have. We've already seen how platformers have changed up gameplay because of it, so the only thing that's a fail is your comment.

 @MachShot Damn right, I've been playing Tekken (and Soul Blade aka Soul Calibur) since PS1 days and I've never bought a fight stick/pad. Never felt the need to--as the Playstation controller is actually a quite adequate controller for fight games. Even to this day, now that Tekken and SC are multiplat many true fans will lean toward the PS3 version over the 360 version (even if they own both). As far as I can tell the only ones that focus on a fight stick/pad are usually those that own 360, since that controller is honestly horrid for any avid fight gamer.

(....and 'no' I'm not saying that as some fangirl statement, even those that play fight games of a 360 will agree it's not the best controller for fighting w/)

 @abHS4L88

 well theres a reason why i always always play RTS on PC and the fact of the matter is play them on the pc cause of a mouse and keyborad so making a contonler with a small screen on it is basically useless. For RPGs the only thing a small screen like that could be used for is some kind of inventory mangement or stats and healthbars and the like. Also what classifies as a WRPG Fallout? cause everything about this new consule is a gimmick. so basically im gonna spend 300 to 400 bucks on a brand new consule for a new controler that seems like its a gameboy advance in of itself. it only has comparitve graphics with this gen not next gen consules and also the only games im gonna get to play except for a few 3rd party ip are gonna be stuff that ive been playing for 15 years already. Yes i do love Zelda and mario cart and smash bros is always a blast but IM NOT GONNA SPEND 300 BUCKS ON A NEW CONTROLER? and so again THATS WHY ITS GONNA FAIL

 @ragnar320

I don't play RTS games much anymore (especially since my computer tends to suck so it's a pain to play them) but it's a genre I do love playing. I agree that the Wii U in no way can completely emulate the capabilities of a PC when it comes to playing RTS games BUT I do feel it has a much better chance of effectively playing RTS games compared to any other system right now.

It wouldn't be too hard to put an interface on the touch screen controller that the player can customize. It'll be a feature absent in other consoles, but it's an addition for the Wii U. It's like how 360 games can have voice activated commands through the Kinect while the PS3 versions don't. Even if you hate the controller, there's no sense in not recognizing what it can do.

Although I have no doubt that the Wii U will be the weakest of the 3, I've also read rumors and articles that the upcoming PS and XBox will not make the same leap in power that the PS3 and 360 did so even if they are indeed more powerful, it'll more likely be like how the GameCube and XBox were more powerful than the PS2 (even the Dreamcast was more powerful) yet we both know who won that generation (not saying the Wii U will win, but the past 3 generations, the weakest home console did the best in terms of sales). Also considering that the full technical specifications haven't been released for the Wii U yet (Nintendo has never been one to show it off) how do we know for sure that they set the bar low again? Until it's revealed, everything about the Wii U's power is pure speculation.

The difference with Nintendo compared to Activison is that their core games usually take 2-3 years between each release and usually only appear once on each platform. Super Mario Galaxy 2 was the first time two 3D Mario titles appeared on one platform. You can argue about New Super Mario Brothers, but again, first one was on the DS, 2nd was on the Wii, 3rd is coming to the 3DS and the 4th will be on the Wii U. As for Mario Party, this is clearly not a core game and I feel that Nintendo does release these games mainly to appeal to families to really help them earn more money, but at the same time, even the Mario Party series usually has a couple of years (or more) between each release, and it's Mario Party 9, which came out 6 years after Mario Party 8, whereas in that same time period, 6 Call of Duties have been released. The only thing Nintendo would be "notorious" for is ensuring that their beloved franchises always come out feeling fresh and of high quality.

They did change their strategy, in case you didn't know, Nintendo actually had a new GameBoy planned that was supposed to be the successor of the GBA but due to the massive success of the DS, it was clear to Nintendo that the DS would be their primary handheld.  For me, I used to love the FPS genre, but I stopped caring about it not too long before the genre exploded and suddenly became the center of attention (which is why we see a new CoD every year). Sure the Wii had a more casual/family friendly appeal to it, but it's not like there wasn't a library of hardcore titles for the Wii. There are at least 20 hardcore titles that are all worth playing and although that number pales in comparison to the 360 and PS3, for a console that is much cheaper and still offers some really fun local multiplayer, it's worth it. Whenever my friends come over, we play my Wii, not my 360.

It's never too late to recapture the hardcore audience. Even if you aren't convinced, your opinion is the not same as everyone else's. For most hardcore gamers, they still love the games Nintendo puts out and if the Wii U delivers the 3rd party games most hardcore gamers love on top of having Nintendo's line of top quality exclusives, it should not be difficult for them to recapture the hardcore audience.

ragnar320
ragnar320

 @abHS4L88Well from looking at your profile im assuming that you dont really play RTS games that much. I might be wrong but if thats true it would be ackward to play a RTS using a controler with a touch screen. It could be done i will give you that but to me i honestly think it would ackward because manipluating a pointer using a joystick is difficult and you have to use a joystick for your pointer because all of the buttons would be taken up with unit commands. Now thats alot of conjucture but thats what i think about RTS and consule. Honestly that might not be something that might bother people but personaly i dont see pro starcraft players playing starcraft on the Wii U. Just saying

And again maybe that would be true that you could change spells or skills at the drop of a hate but at the same time that mean the dev has to specificaly degsin an interface the compatiable only with Wii U and thus not compatiable with other consules. To be honest I just really hate the controler like a f***ing lot so im always gonna bash that one aspect i guess.

Now on to graphics. Wii Xbox 360 and PS3 are all members of the same generation and the Wii had compartively lower graphics than the other two. The Wii U does have improved graphics that could be refined to easily be better than the Xbox 360 and PS3 giving pretty dam good graphics. What im trying to say that the Wii U is part of the PS4 and Xbox 720 generation. And from what ive read and seen of the new consules they far surpass both last generation and the Wii U at the same time. That means that the Xbox 720 and PS4 will again have better graphics than the Wii U becasue nintendo is again setting the bar too low for graphics and performance power and not setting it high enough.

Yes of course making iconic games is a good idea but isnt the market starting to get tired of sequals and trilogies. Nintendo is notouris for this kind of thing for instance Mario Party 12 now i think. Its very similar to Activision making a new COD every year and a new Maden or whatever freaking game that comes out once a year im just tired of it. I want to see something new and innotative thats what i want.

Okay they did NOT CHANGE THERE STARTGY. The DS was the next instalment of after the Gamebody Advance SP trust id know thats when i played advanced wars. That was part of there buiness plan but back then i tihnk nintendo was stronger mostly because of pokemon and a few other great games that they still make. Nintendo does make great games dont get me wrong Zelda the Windmaker was one of my all time favrite games. But around that time the PS2 was coming out or was out idk exactly and then the xbox with Halo and i thus started to loose interst in Nintendo. Nintendo stoped making good FPS and that was where the market was heading at the time. They did have them on the Gamecube got a lot of found memoers of medal of honor and shotguns but then then they started to focus on the Wii. And that is when they changed there buisness plan to focus on casual players and not hard core ones that was the start. I havent played a Wii in years and idk anyone my age who has one but i can tell you i have 8 year old cousin who has one. Nintendo made a mistake and there trying to recapture the hardcore again but its too late for them

abHS4L88
abHS4L88

 @ragnar320

Poorer graphics? Do you know how much effort it would take for any company to release hardware that's weaker than 7 year old hardware? I keep going back to Pikmin 3 because of all the launch titles, that game right now embodies what the Wii U is about, innovative gameplay along with beautiful, vibrant, stunning graphics. Rayman Legends also embodies what the Wii U is about too with it's amazing visuals (looks better than most other games out there, especially considering the game is entirely in 3D this time around) along with showing the difference the GamePad can make in gameplay.

abHS4L88
abHS4L88

 @ragnar320

Yes Pikmin has always been a console RTS title, but in case you weren't looking, Pikmin 3's GamePad play style is similar to how Command & Conquer and Civilization work in the sense that you're now managing different units throughout a large map. All the buttons on the GamePad can pretty much replace keys (you have 4 shoulder, four face, and four directional so that's 12 keys right there).

It would not be the same as pressing B to pull up an interface because for one, you wouldn't have to pull up a screen and two, once you've learned how to effectively use the 2nd screen, activating skills or commands will be much faster and more smooth as you'll have memorized the layout.

Of course Nintendo will continue to create games for their iconic franchises, as long as they remain highly popular and well received, why would they stop? It's like telling Capcom to stop making Street Fighter and Resident Evil games, or Konami to stop with Metal Gear and so on.

I stated that the Wii u's graphics look stunning right now, and games like Assassin's Creed 3 look even better on the Wii U and again, this is the beginning of its life cycle starting off already better than what the 360 and PS3 are putting out at maximum power. Crtek has already confirmed that their engine runs beautifully on the Wii U, meaning that it handles it easily, the Unreal Engine 3 has been confirmed to work seamlessly on the Wii U so saying that the Wii U is starting off a full generation behind is flat out not true.

Nintendo fell behind during the N64 and GameCube eras, so they decided to change up their strategy, starting with the DS. Their approach to instead change up how we game instead of simply giving us better looking games worked, so they proceeded with the Wii which also (to an extent) worked really well. Nintendo does care about the hardcore gamer, especially considering that their core first party titles are pretty much meant for hardcore gamers. Of course they're going to care about their other audiences too, it's a stupid business decision to only focus on one type of audience when you clearly have the resources to appeal to both. The Wii U's launch line up already highlights hardcore titles along with more casual titles so I don't know how anyone could think it would fail.

ragnar320
ragnar320

 @abHS4L88

 also i only meant that the two would come togather in single package but isnt it also true that you can only have two connected to one Wii U So what were back to two player mutli again? i know its going to come toagther for the price of 300 dollers but in fact that really all you are buying with alittle poorer graphics and very specific games which makes the Wii U not worth it in my eyes

ragnar320
ragnar320

 @abHS4L88

 Okay first of all pikman has always been on a consule. When i say RTS i mean Command and Conquer and Total War with some Civ mixed in there. Every time a RTS game has gone to consule it sucks every time with out fail it sucks because of the controler. I will concede that the tablet screen could in fact be used for a mouse but idk i still think it would be lame because i use the keyborad and mouse while playing a RTS. Frankly i dont seem much impact from RTS onto consule it just dosent happen its a shame cause ive tried halo wars and others and they just arent that good so why would it be any different on the Wii U

Also every RPG game you listed the only thing that would be down there would be the skryim inventory interface and same for mass effect too. It would be the exact same hiting B and having the interface come up on the TV so why should i have to buy a new consule. Its not worth it for that.

The next part i kinda got jumbled and thats my fault but what i meant to say that most of the games coming out for the Wii U are gonna be games that ive played for 15 years like zelda, metroid, mario cart and smash bros. Other than a few IPs that are going to be coming from other consule games like the ones youve metioned before. Thats what the majority of games are going to be its just like a fact of life with nintendo thats how it works out.

Also another point id like to bring up is that you mention that Wii U has gotten its full potenial but the Xbox 360 and PS3 both have reached there potenial and the Wii U is gonna start its graphic journey alittle behind the full ponteial of other consules from last gen. Come on thats another failing of nintendo cause they did it for the Wii and you could say the same thing about the Gamecube compared to the orginal xbox and PS2.

The fact of the matter is is that Nintendo has slowly been falling behind other conusle games and frankly Nintendo dosent care at all about the hard core gamer anymore they care about the next 10 and 8 year olds and grandparents and families playing family games togather. All these things behind mean the video game industry is going to leave them behind because they are not the big thing anymore.

lets see what you got ;)

abHS4L88
abHS4L88

 @ragnar320

Like I said, Pikmin 3 is already proving how the RTS genre can work on consoles, something console gaming has severely lacked (and the ones that do come out usually don't fare well). Blizzard has already shown interest in the Wii U because of the controller. The touch screen can work the same way a mouse does in RTS games.

I was thinking games like Skyrim, Mass Effect, having the commands put on the screen for simple pressing will allow the player to use a much wider array of moves much more effectively without the hassle of going through a menu or shortcut screen.

Yeah this new console totally seems like a gimmick, especially since Sony and Microsoft revealed their answers to the Wii U shortly after the Wii U was revealed, because that's what gimmick means right? The graphics right now on the Wii U only seem somewhat better than the PS3 and 360 because guess what? We're at the beginning of the Wii U's life cycle, obviously it's not going to bust out amazing graphics right away. Look at most of the games that came out in 2005-2006 and compare them to now. A lot of games on the Wii U already look spectacular so imagine how much better they'll look in a couple of years, especially when Sony and Microsoft release their consoles (which will most likely not offer the same leap the PS3 and 360 did).

3rd party games you've been playing for 15 years already? Unless you're talking about virtual console games, the only 3rd party game that has been out for nearly a year that's confirmed is Batman, yeah Mass Effect 3 came out earlier this year (I was actually surprised to see that title since it didn't make sense to me why it would be on the Wii U), but games like Darksiders 2 and Assassin's Creed 3 will have barely been out by the time the Wii U launches.

Who said that the controller is $300? The console and controller is $300. Of course it'd fail if the console and controller were sold separately, so how can it fail if it's priced at $300 anyways? That's a really favorable price for a new console, especially considering it's an HD Nintendo console.
