Wii takes lead in January

[UPDATE] Nintendo's "new-gen" console sells 435,503 units in US in five weeks, besting the 360's 294,000 units and the PS3's 243,554; DS tops portables.

Last December, the Xbox 360 was the best-selling next-generation console in the US, moving more than 1.1 million units. In second place was Nintendo's "new-gen" device, the Wii, with 604,200 units. Pulling up the rear was Sony's supply-constrained PlayStation 3 with 490,700 units sold--a shortcoming ameliorated by the fact that 1.4 million PlayStation 2s sold during the month.

299,352 units in January? Is this the Guitar Hero II effect or just people being very late to the party?

This week, industry-research firm NPD released its figures for "January"--which was in fact a five-week period from December 31, 2006, to February 3, 2007. During the so-called month, the Wii pulled ahead of the Xbox 360 in the US. According to figures released by both companies, Nintendo's upstart machine moved 435,503 units, compared to 294,000 units of Microsoft's 15-month-old console.

But while the cardinals of Redmond still retain second-place bragging rights in the new console contest, that may soon change. With blue laser diode production problems apparently behind it, Sony has begun to breathe down Microsoft's neck. The Japanese electronics giant claims it sold 243,554 PS3s in the US during the extended January reporting period.

Sony Computer Entertainment was bullish in a statement. "Tie ratios for [the] PS3 have improved by 80 percent since launch and should continue to climb with the release of the much-anticipated MotorStorm from SCEA and Virtua Fighter 5 from Sega," it said.

In the grander scope of things, NPD (by way of several analyst reports) now states that, as of February 3, around 4.8 million Xbox 360s, 1.5 million Wiis, and 933,000 PS3s have been sold in the US.

[UPDATE] As for the PS2, it kept on truckin' as well, moving 299,352 units--a year-on-year increase of 20 percent. Many analysts speculated the console's continuing good fortune was a combination of its cheap price and the fact that it is needed to play the runaway hit Guitar Hero II. NPD reported that just 34,000 GameCubes sold during the month, and did not even bother reporting sales figures for the original Xbox--tossing another shovelful of dirt into the platform's grave.

On the portable front, the Nintendo DS was king (shocker), selling 239,000 units during the five-week January period. The PSP came in second with 211,000 units, followed by the Game Boy Advance with 179,000 units.

for all the talk about the 360 having no games...5 words...Mass Effect and Fable 2. Look it up, add those to the list of awesome games, not to mention Assasins Creed being better on the 360 when the day comes, the PS3 is a waste as of now.

I predict this to be the console war through 2007-2011 1. Nintendo Wii 2. Microsoft Xbox 360 3. Sony PlayStation 3 www.vgcharts.org

It appears that the Wii shows no signs of slowing down but I would expect a system that's nearly half the price of its competitors to be a bigger hit. Especially when the target market is your kid sister and your grandma. Obviously the PS3 has a lot of catching up to do and they only way to get there is to market the system as more than the Mercedes of gaming but also a value based on the feature set. You could say that online capability has nothing to do with success when you account for Nintendo's success but in Sony's case it will be a make or break deal. With rumors of "Playstation Home" circling the Internet there's a chance that Sony can make up some ground they lost over the holidays. Still, their other big obstacle is the price. They just need to bite the bullet, stop making the $499 system, and price the premium SKU at $399. This will put MS into a tight spot as they'll have no legs to stand on when it comes to price when compared against a Blu-Ray player, 60GB hard drive, and free online play. Granted Sony needs to pick up the slack on that but if they just keep watching what MS is doing right then it should be pretty easy to at least match what MS is doing. I can dream can't I?

I find it funny that everyone takes gaming sales seriously who cares, if you have a system you like shut up and play it instead of complaining.

FallenOneX, I believe the 20 gig PS3 is now discontinued. At least where I work (Best Buy), that's how it's listed in the system. It makes sense, given the fact that both retailers and consumers pretty much avoided the 20 gig like the plague...

it's still gonna be quite a bit before console prices fall to more palatable levels. But I've sure got my eye on the Wii and most probarly the X360

Wow, I love these posts. With all of the numbers being thrown around, all the fanboys can bash every system! I don't know how that many Wii's got sold, can't seem to find one anywhere. In San Antonio, we had 4 people waiting outside of Target Sunday morning to buy one. They hit the nail on the head with the GHII comment in regards to the PS2. Sony is still stretching for that silver lining. Great Sony, now people are actually buying your system for games, shocking. Good news for the PSP though. Hackers, keep it up, because no one I know has bought one for the games actually on sale. BTW, has anyone seen a 20gb PS3 in stores? Seriously, our store hasn't gotten one in since launch. Not like Sony cares though, with sales of the PS2 doing so well.

Why the heck is Sony making out like that now that the production problems are nearly behind them, people will finally be able to be able to buy these PS3 machines that they are so desperately craving? The PS3 has been readily available since the beginning of January. And I've been hearing all this talk about how Sony finally "got it right" and was able to make enough to meet demand. They met demand because hardly anyone wanted one. They were still quite a bit behind the 360, and it's been out for more than a year. Heck, they were way behind the PS2 and it's been out for nearly seven years. Awake yet, Sony?

So cjnwo4life is trying to say $299 for a machine like the Xbox 360 with Xbox Live is not a reasonable price for the mainstream consumer? Yes, you certainly understand a lot about consoles, no doubt about that. Anyway, now that it's $199 is by far the best deal of the 3 (better games than any other console, Xbox Live, Halo 3, GTA IV, nuff said).

Fil0403
Fil0403

So Guitar Hero II, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Blue Dragon, Burnout Revenge, Project Gotham Racing 3, Geontry Wars: Retro Evolved, NBA Street Homecourt, Dead or Alive 4, Fight Night Round 3, Dead Rising, Culdcept Saga, Viva Pinata, NBA 2K7, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Double Agent and Worldwide Soccer Manager 2007 (all excellent games) are shooters, scoots221? On the other hand, what does the Wii have to offer besides RPG Zelda, Wii Sports and Wii Play? Nothing. Not to mention something called Halo 3 (and GTA IV).

scoots221
scoots221

Sony's console isn't going anywhere right now. they need more games seeing as there are none. Plus i was told by a friend that old controllers don't work with the PS3, so Guitar Hero II won't even help it. Meanwhile, XBOX360 still just has a bunch of shooters. lots and lots of shooters. at least GHII in April will give a little variety. So get a Wii. I've got one, and the thing rocks. :-)

YEAH, this proves crap sells if cheap I guess children need a system without more then 3 rated M games coming on it to play. all well I guess leap frog was to much learning. Wow I also love the anti-American I guess I be mad to if my country sucks and that games with sub titles are the number one selling games must suck. (Thought) I hate when gamespot or anyone talks about the japan market of games and compare to american market. The wii is number one there and Pokemon is still the number one game. do i need to say more.

The PS3 also has big advantages for American consumers: 1) It has NO games, so you're saving craploads of money 2) The controllers have no vibration, so the batteries won't run out too soon. 3) If you can't afford/can't find a Wii, Sixxaxis is a cheap, inferior rip-off that should tide you over until you get a hold of one. 4) You get a new firmware update like every 5 seconds, so in theory, the PS3 is always growing!!! (To quote the old Dreamcast commercial, "it's thinking!") 5) You get to install huge amounts of some games on your harddrive (up to a gig or 2) to compensate for the slowed load times of the PS3's blu-ray. At least we can all agree that the Wii is cool? No?

red_fire4
red_fire4

The 360 currently has several advantages over the PS3 for American consumers: • It has even more crap games • A lot of those crap games involve guns • It is American Plus it has Gears of War, which has a) guns b) some more guns c) Americans d) homoerotic overtones e) guns f) big guns h) muscly men i) guns j) giant crotchguards.

seanbond do you have a ps3? the online expirence is not as bad as people say. Fall of Man for example is very easy to go online and play. the only problem in ps3 is finding your friends online, but it is suppose to be fixed in a massive update by sony in the spring. I for one own a PS3 and its not as bad as you think. it started out slw but the ps3 is slowing starting to gain momentum with the upcoming games in the next few months or so. tyhe xbox 360 is just as good though i might ad. Crackdown looks great and same with mass effect and bioshock and of course halo 3.

Eagles5

every passing month the wii is looking more attractive. ps3 will overtake M$ next month with virtua fighter 5 and in march because of the umpteen games droping on sonys console in the month of march.

Gears is the only "wowing" game on the 360, and not worth "$500"? Uhhh right...I think you're confusing the 360's lineup with the PS3's...Free online versus $50 a year? Well, you get what you pay for (which is probably why no one is wetting themselves with excitement over Sony's online support for the PS3). "Top line blu-ray"??? So if a blu-ray player retails for $1000, what exactly makes you think the one in the $500/$600 PS3 is top of the line? Right. And your last sentence is just inane. Who paid for the Halo beta? I bought Crackdown because I wanted the GAME, and there were TWO other free ways to get into the beta. Pay for hd-dvd? Well I guess it's good that I don't actually need/want any type of high def. dvd player right now, and probably won't until the format war is decided (which, btw, if blu-ray doesn't win, will render the PS3 an even bigger waste of money) And finally, "pay for new hard drive"? While I have no problem doing this, I've still got 10.5 gigs free on the one that came with my 360, so I'm not in a rush to expand my space.

GonLee30
GonLee30

I think my man seanbond missed the point.actually made my point for me Gears is the only wowing game on 360.Just one game maybe two.I for one do have the money for a ps3 or 360 and could care less about the price.Gears is a nice game but not worth 500 bucks. When you buy the weaker hddvd for 360 its the same as the 600 the ps3 is asking and you get less. Can the 360 surf the net,60ghd,free online, top line blu-ray, you do get your bang for your buck its just where are the games sony where are the games.Any on crying about the price can`t afford it and had not taken the time to see MS nickles and dimes you to death.Pay for Halo 3 bata test, pay for xbox live, pay for hddvd, pay for new hard drive you do the math.

SeanBond
SeanBond

PS2 is outselling the 360 because a lot of people are too cheap or don't have enough money to buy a $200+ gaming system. At the Best Buy I work at, the majority of the people who come in for PS2 games go straight to the Greatest Hits section, and search there for the next 30 minutes to find their next game. As the 360 (and Wii, and PS3) is still new, and most of its games (and the hardware itself) are still selling for a premium, these "bargain shoppers" are not willing to dish out the cash for a newer system. As for "wow factor", I think the only system that isn't doing ANY wowing at the moment (360 has Gears and Xbox Live, Wii has its controller) is the PS3. Actually, it IS wowing customers, but only because of the price... Final sidenote: Wait till (I know, I sound like a PS3 fanboy) Guitar Hero II comes out for the 360. As this is one of the biggest selling points for the PS2 at the moment, it'll be interesting to see what happens to hardware sales between the PS2 and 360 when they both have the game...

GonLee30
GonLee30

I know all you nintendo fanbays are standing around throwing high fives (and missing) to each other, but not so fast. The ps2 is still out selling the 360.Over 100 million people own a x box or ps2 alone, but 360 has only sold less that 5 million with a 18 month head start. The point I am about to make is this, most people are not crazy about any of the next gen systems, where are the games that make you want to run out and fork over your life savings?Sony said rumble is not important MISTAKE!!!X box 360 most powerful system MISTAKE!!!!.Wii most games look like crap and still not much third party support MISTAKE!!! Long story short alot of people are still sitting on the fence waiting to be wowed.

rarson, What are your issues, you hang around all these postings trying to pick arguments. You must have posted countless threads on the PS3 compatibility articles and have been calling out people. Get real, people come here to post comment and read game reviews. But, you need attention, get some friend. OK, you like your wii, stop hanging around PS3 thread and bad-mouthing it. I guess I am doing the same thing as you are, crossing the line.

"The Wii is still new, all the children don't have one yet, but soon will. It's strong sales won't last. 360 is still the nexgen leader with over 10 million sold." While I generally agree with you, children are NOT the only people buying the Wii. In fact, most of the people I know with one are adults. And most of the people I talk to in my age group (25+) are mostly interested in the Wii. Casual gamers have no desire for the best graphics. They look at a system that looks fun, has ACTUAL multiplayer (as in, you're sitting or standing next to the person that you are playing against), and has a cheap price. I see the Wii not only selling to casual gamers, but also intriguing people I know that weren't even into video games or people who haven't played them for years. I know a lot of people from the "Nintendo generation" that got tired of games because they basically got more complex. The Wii draws them back in and gives them a chance to not only have fun again in a new way, but also go back and revisit some of those original classics. And while I'd love to see Microsoft come out on top for this round of the console wars, I really don't think the 360 is selling as well as it should. I hope it continues to sell well and maybe when enough people get sick of their Wiis, they'll buy a 360 (I'm just waiting for a price drop).

"Who overtakes who doesnt matter to me as long as I manage to get one to play games on, lol." I agree, its video games, they're for entertainment, I don't see why it really matters who is better, eventually all of them will do well in their own right. I think the Ps3 and wii will do better when they really start to get a lot of good games, if you recall, the 360 didn't start with a ton of awesome games, it took months before the developers got used to the the new system and started to realize its potential.

Wii is outselling all the rest because it offers a genuinely fresh and fun way to enjoy videogames. This won't stop me from getting a PS3 to complement my 360, but the Wii is also definately on my want list.

I agree with everyone who says that fanboy rating is plain stupid, everyone's system is great, this is just early figures. the Wii fad will begin to slow down this year anyway with the lack of big name titles and by 2008 there will be less interest in a new GC with a newly designed controller. Speaking of systems I've haven't bought a new next gen console and don't plan on buying one right now because none of the systems have alot hardcore fighting games that I've been so used to playing, this is way I've always prefered Sega consoles because they always had arcade perfect ports. Do get me wrong, I like 360 and PS3 is just that none of the games have wowed me with true next gen technology and decent budget, I believe the 360 will outsell Wii this year anyway and that PS3 will do well not as big as it's predesessors. The Day SEGA finally launches a new console where I'll be a able to play my arcade perfect ports and imports. That day will come in a few years.

wsammut, give the ps3 a chance?? how many ps3 titles have a score of 9.0 or better (the answer is none...)??? how long did it take for a 360 game on this site to get a score of 9.0 or better???? how many months did those games have in terms of development???? perfect dark (nov, 05), graw and oblivion (mar' 06) all have had eqivalent development time now and lesser understanding of the hardware. i mean come on now, what evidence do you have that makes you think that way?? gtaIV will not sell more on the ps3 simply because the 360 has a bigger installed base and mgs will more than likely launch around the same time as super mario galaxy and halo 3 so i ask you, and people that share your opinion to explain to me how the ps3 will pwn or dominate or whatever the hel! you wanna call it. get at me

just give the ps3 a chance guys.. come on be realistic.. what do you expect, game developers have now figured freatly how to develop for the 360 its been out for 15 months!!!. the ps3 is just a few months old so developers need time... its obvious the 360 sold more.. y ? price... just give the ps3 a chance till after summer then it will smash the xbox for sure. yes it is really expensive i admit that and games will cost more but with time it will be better... at least thats what i believe.

i find it amazing that people still have trouble getting there hands on a wii. i got luck back in november but the fact that there still selling out is utterly amazing.
