Wii stock won't be replenished in United Kingdom

Nintendo confirms Wii imports to Europe have been discontinued; Wii Mini will remain available.

by

Wii stock will not be replenished in the United Kingdom, a Nintendo UK representative told MCV, noting that Wii Mini units will remain available across the region.

"Wii imports to Europe have been discontinued," the Nintendo representative said.

The news comes after Wii production ended in Japan earlier this month. This will not affect the North American market, where the console will continue to be available.

The Wii, which has already sold over 100 million units across the world, is entering its eighth holiday season on the market. The systems starts at $130 for a bundle that includes Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort.

A preowned Wii system will go for $50 at GameStop on Black Friday in the United States, according to a recently leaked advertisement from the retailer.

Look I loved the Wii and I got as much play out of it as I have my 360 & PS3. Nintendo really need to start promoting their Wii U like this, the last gen Wii will take care of itself.

I started playing Skyward Sword on my Wii U the other day and it looks incredible. The Wii U does a very good job of upscaling Wii games to 1080p. I don't need my Wii anymore and I'd urge others to buy a Wii U for Wii games instead of the mini Wii.

There's the end of a generation. 100 million units sold worldwide? Damn...

Anybody who thinks that this will happen with the Wii-U is sadly mistaken. Nintendo is rich beyond belief. They can hold out without any problems. When they release the real Zelda for the Wii-U, they will sell tens of millions of Wii-U's in the span of a few months. I know it... you know it... and Nintendo knows it. LOL

I have a friend who works in a gamestation store in the uk. He said there are literally hundreds of Wii Consoles both new and second hand ones that have been traded in just sitting in storage that cant even sell.

From what I've read, the Wii Mini is garbage. I copied the following from a customer review from the Canadian Best Buy site:

"This console is not "Mini", it is almost the same physical dimensions as the regular Wii. Nintendo has removed the following:

Slot-loading disc drive, Gamecube support, controller & USB ports, SD card slot for expandable memory, removed the ability for Component and 480p video (it can only use RCA cables), and all Online functionality (WiiWare games, Virtual Console Games, ability to patch games, ability to play against others online)."
I don't get why ANYONE would want to buy this over a regular Wii (don't know why anyone would want to buy that either). It seems Nintendo stripped away any and all features, and what's left is just the basic ability to play a disc. Usually when a console manufacturer comes out with a newer, cheaper hardware revision, it maintains all or most of the original features, but in a cheaper box.

Might not have been the best console ever, but I had a lot of fun with it <3. Of course, like any other collector, I'm keeping mine with all its files in it, screw that transfer to Wii U thing

They need to put this console to bed and start advertising and selling the Wii U to gamers.

I keep reading these articles and thinking they are talking about discontinuing the Wii U already cause it is selling so bad.

I would not have been surprised with that news either, but this just goes to show how terrible of a name that is, as I need to do a double-take with every headline I read.

According to Wiieners hating on Nintendo, that won't be necessary, because the stores are full of them. If true, that's good for people still wanting to buy one, though, with 100 million units sold I don't think there are many left who'd like to do that.

I've never heard of the Wii Mini, but I'm glad they didn't name it the Wee Wii.

I know it's not my business to ask and I know it's hard to be done, but lowering the price means bringing new consumers to your doorstep, people that otherwise will never buy a Wii. I'm not demanding anything and I am sure the costs of production are probably already at the peak of the price, but all those who buy a console will likely buy some games for it. At least you get customers.

I don't know what's sadder. Nintendo desperately trying to yell "WII IS DEAD!" or the fact that both DSi and DSiXL are still in production?

My all time favorite experience with the Wii was Silent Hill: Shattered Memories. it had its problems, but it made good use of all of the Wii's functionality, even the little speaker in the WiiMote. Most of the time I played my Wii, I was playing Brawl with friends. Love the other two Smash games but I only ever played like 30 minutes of Brawl.

Now my Wii is inside a box in my Garage with most of the Wii unplayed and there it shall remind.

By the way Eddie this is old news.

I want to try to get one of those Wii Minis for my collection. I'll have to try to get one from Canada or something.

Well, the Nintendo representative said "Wii imports to Europe have been discontinued" . Doesn't that already include the U.K.?

Hey GameSpot: the U.K. is part of Europe but that doesn't mean that Europe means U.K. The region affected is Europe as a whole.

Worth noting for those who don't know that the majority of Wii games can be played on the Wii U

@twisted_sith If lower definition turns you off, then you might never experience the joy of retro-gaming.

Graphic fidelity is a fad of the present. Art direction and game design traverse generations.

I played Super Metroid for the first time just a few years ago and that world immersed me in a way very few games this generation have managed to do. And it's a nearly 20 year old game!

@emptycow718 wii(2006): 100 million+ (no final count yet)

xbox 360(05/06 depending on your region): 80 million and counting

ps3(06/07 depending on your region): 80 million and counting

I say the Wii had a great run in the span of almost 7 years
360 has 3 more years, maybe longer

ps3 may be longer, who knows

@AlexFili yep this is why they can cease production quicker then maybe Sony and or MS will for 360/PS3

twisted_sith

@mibossi @twisted_sith It isn't a "fad." Graphics will continue to get better and better for all time until we can no longer decipher between what is real and not. Some people care more about graphics than others. I started gaming mid 90's with my sega genesis and gameboy pocket. I know all about retro-gaming.
