Wii Sports getting HD update for Wii U

Nintendo to release bowling, tennis, baseball, boxing, and golf games on Wii U at $2 for 24-hour pass or $10 each to keep forever as part of Wii Sports Club.

2006's Wii Sports is getting a high-definition update for Wii U through the new Wii Sports Club, Nintendo announced today. Bowling, tennis, baseball, boxing, and golf will be featured as individual downloads through the Nintendo eShop beginning on November 7 with tennis and bowling.

Boxing, baseball, and golf will be released "in the months ahead."

Those who download Wii Sports Club will be given a trial pass that allows them to play any available game for a 24-hour period. After this period ends, players can either purchase a Day Pass for $2 to play all available sports for a 24-hour period, or buy permanent access to individual sports for $10 each.

The new versions of the Wii Sports' games will feature not only high-definition graphics, but also "enhanced" controls through Wii MotionPlus, as well as head-to-head online multiplayer. Players will be registered to state or regional "clubs" and can chat with one another through Miiverse during matches, Nintendo said.

Gamers can play casually against members of their own club or take on rival clubs to increase club rankings.

The original Wii Sports, which was first released as a pack-in game for the Wii, has sold 81.99 million units globally to date.

Nintendo also announced today that an update to Wii Street U (powered by Google Maps) is now available that makes use of the Wii Balance Board. Users can now virtually walk down streets by taking steps on the Balance Board. The Wii Street U app is available today as a free download through the eShop until October 31.

For goodness sakes, you better advertise this one properly Nintendo, because the rest of us are unlikely to buy this.

$10 isn't too unreasonable if you only ever played like one sport on the original. Clearly, we're not the target audience for these titles.

This is exactly what Nintendo needs to do. Games that involve the Wiimote with high def graphics will help with the casuals. They needed to do more of this. Not to mention a full media blitz that shows everyone that the Wii U isn't just a tablet addition to their Wii.

now we can pay to walk down the street on a wii fit board instead of actually going outside and walking down the street

I would only buy Golf and Boxing but even then that is pushing it.  At least they added some multiplayer to it.  We will see how far this goes.

The ping pong and sword fighting ones from Wii Sports resort are the only ones I would buy, I wonder if they will release the resort games someday... Well actually, even though I love those two, 10 dollars is a lot, I would pay 5 for each, tops.

I'm usually on board with Nintendo,  but ..... no, Nintendo no. Stupidist thing I've heard in a long time.

So I pay $10 to play a Wii game with Wii Remotes on the Wii U? Okay? Well I always enjoyed Wii Sports Golf so I may have to fork over the $10. Almost forgot I bought GTA V for the 360, never mind. Come on Nintendo, lets get those big titles out so I can dust off the Wii U.

$10 for EACH sport... umm no.

I'm rather concerned that this is a digital download only title, just how much space will it take of the already limited WiiU internal memory since this game now features HD assets?  I really don't like the system Nintendo has set up for digital downloads, for as it stands, if anything happens to the console, all digital purchases that are linked to the system will be gone as well.

Jesus they should stop it with the HD updates of old titles and focus on new IP's and better ways to make me wanna buy a U

I wonder if we'll get a full 18 holes with golf, or if it's the original nine.

I'm curious to see how much better the boxing will be with Wii Motion Plus. The original didn't have it and didn't control very good.

Now everyone's going to throw a fit because *gasp* Nintendo is still making games for people other than 15-35 males then proceed to continue to complain about no Starfox or Fzero.

has anyone seen this game? In bowling, the peoples arms/hands are just SPHERES. how will HD benefit it?

While the prospect of online play and some of the new features seems neat...$50 is a really steep price tag for something that has mostly unimportant improvements when I can get the older version for $10 or less. If it goes on sale or has a 50% off during launch window like they did with the Kirby VC games then I'll get it...otherwise I will just invite my lazy friends and family over to play the Wii Version rather than me waste my money on this. I don't understand why they are asking for so much...

Head to head online play? Oooo, I like this! Sign me up!! :D

Porting over Wii Sports is a very good idea given its high popularity.

Not that Wii Sports needed a graphics update. It would have looked the same on an N64. But the crisp visuals and lack of a blank area at the sides of the screen will take that cheap feeling away.

Dam rich keep getting richer. A physical copy of Duck Tales, and now an updated Wii Sports. I mean who wouldn't buy a Wii U now, maybe even two or three units.

As long as people keep Brown nosing Nintendo, things will never change. They need new I.p.'s . Why could'nt they just make a new Wii sports title instead of rehashing the old one. I would rather play Jenga at a party than pay 300 dollars for party games. Also this has nothing to do with Nintendo bashing or Fanboyism. I've had them all and played them all. This is reality.

bunchanumbers

Oh this is going to be awesome. I'll be able to do bowling games with my friends across the country. I'll also be able to do Golf with my cousin in the next state over. Oh this is going to be worth it.

mikeybruises

Anyone who says this is bad idea is just plain crazy or a hater.  Why shouldn't Nintendo get some more mileage out of  one of its most successful IPs.  I think the idea of playing tourneys online in tennis, golf, bowling, etc. is a fantastic idea.  "The Wii Sports Club" idea alone hints to more good things to come.

jd7904
jd7904

This is actually a neat idea. Only buy the ones you want for 10 bucks. all I want is a simple golf game with online play. This should be a lot of fun. Time to buy my mom a Wii U and we can have a bowling tournament from across town :-)

what makes Nintendo think that people who buy Wii sports are interested in Multiplayer? They are casuals

ArabrockermanX

@kaiserdisco If you lived where I lived that wouldn't sound like a bad idea... Aside from bad drivers(with and with out DL) you have the occasional shooting done by gang-banger wannabe teenagers...

@yavix Yeah, those are some pricey games, they kinda pulled the same shit with those simple miiplaza games on the 3DS.

@SciFiCat I should be tired of saying this, but here I go again: you can plug and use USB external storage devices on Wii U, meaning all the complaints about it's storage capacity are just not proportional to the problem.

USB storage is really cheap nowadays and you can just use a PC external HDD, meaning you won't need to pay for overpriced proprietary storage, unlike the Xbox 360 or the PS Vita.

Roger01
Roger01

@SciFiCatWell, the old wii sports was like, 120 megabytes... I know because I had a hard drive on my wii for backups (seriously, for backups, not for pirate games, I used to take it everywhere and it was a pain to get all the games with me so I decided to softmod it so I could always put my games on the hard drive), the new version shouldnt be that much larger because it will probably just use bigger resolutions and filters and nothing else, even if they upgrade the textures it wont be thaaat big. The 3DS eshop also have some pretty massive games and they arent really that big in space. Plus if you just want one or two games it might just be 20 megabytes.

That said, you can extend your wii u memory with external hard drives I believe, they arent that expensive nowadays and most people have spare ones with extra space, but yeah, it is unfortunate that the wii-u's memory isnt that much.

@FranciscoEterno What?Of course people want to play sports with other people.Casual or not Tennis or bowling is more fun with another player. What a dumb comment you made there.

Evenglare
Evenglare

@FranciscoEterno ...Casuals don't like multiplayer? What? Also, you do realize that it's not a binary thing right? You can like and dislike more than one thing. Not everyone in a group has to do everything that everyone else in the group does. In this case the group is "Casuals". I must come to the conclusion you are a fucking idiot. Have a GREAT DAY THOUGH !!!! :3

trdrstv

@FranciscoEterno Yes, and sometimes casuals live away from each other and still like to play games. They also support Video calls via the tablet.

Jinzo_111887
Jinzo_111887

@FranciscoEterno You don't have to be a casual gamer to enjoy it. Trust me. I enjoy it along with a number of other games like Metroid Prime Trilogy, Sonic Colors, Skyward Sword, Earthbound, etc. And those are only games on that can be played on the Wii U.

@Roger01 @yavix

Those StreetPass games are actually pretty awesome and give even more incentive to go get StreetPass hits. All of them are really fun, the Gardening one has a lot of depth with quests, building up your garden, trying to grow specific plants while the Mansion one is pretty action packed with a lot of puzzle solving elements and RPG elements. The Conqueror is probably the most shallow of the bunch but is still fun seeing your army grow along with taking over other lands, building up your own castle and taking on other people's armies. Finally the Space shooter one is easily the best in terms of the gameplay but can be completed much quicker than the others. Easily worth the $15 since it adds a LOT more to do whenever I get StreetPass hits.

mariobro9999
mariobro9999

@Ripper_TV @kiramasaki I dont know if you are being sarcastic. But if not then I would like to say that it is indeed fun and healthy. My family plays tennis and bowling on the old one and have a great time.

@trdrstv My aunt and uncle bought a Wii U, and now I talk to them more than I ever have since they live 500 miles away.
